The WEA opposite the Christchurch Art Gallery on Gloucester St, has been offering affordable adult education for over 100 years. A recent survey of participants and tutors shows that it is about more than just the courses it runs. Kazuko who teaches Japanese arts and culture says “It’s my home away from home, a home of learning”. The homely feel and warm welcome you get on stepping through the door indicate an inclusive, caring culture - values which have long been held high at the WEA. With discussion clubs like “The Thinkers Group”, courses on Women’s Suffrage and Armchair travel as well as regular speaker slots called “The Social Issues Soap Box”, a community of learners are being encouraged to explore, analyze and expand their horizons. As our emerging city seeks to position itself as progressive and forward thinking it is clear that this centrally located education hub has a key role to play: it gives us space to reflect on, learn about and challenge the world we see around us - whilst nurturing community both in and outside the classroom.
