Fridays in the Park with Abe features special guests
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
The legacy of Abraham Lincoln
is always an aspect of Gallery
Seven’s Fridays in the Park
with Abe free concert series as it
takes place on Lockport’s scenic
Lincoln Landing, just north of the
Illinois State Museum Lockport
Gallery.
On the evening of Friday, July
6, the 16th President of the United
States truly became the star of the
show by making a special appearance
with his wife, Mary Todd.
Wheaton residents Max and
Donna Daniels — the pair behind
the portrayals of Abraham and
Mary Todd Lincoln — appreciated
the opportunity to interact with
concert-goers in a casual setting.
“What we enjoy about portraying
the Lincolns is being able to
bring these iconic historical figures
to life and show that they
were human beings,” Donna Daniels
said.
Max Daniels said Lincoln is
remembered as a great American
President because he was an exemplary
example of a statesman.
“Lincoln was a man who persevered,”
he said. “He did not let
the pettiness of political parties
get to him. Along with the founding
fathers, he was a person who
was in the right place at the right
time.
“America had a great gift
for finding people with differing
opinions. Jefferson, Adams,
Washington and Franklin all had
different political points of view,
but they were willing to move
forward for the common good...
Some 87 years later, Lincoln was
tasked with the same thing. Now
hold this experiment together and
move it forward.”
Attendees had the opportunity
to build on the patriotic sentiments
of the recent Independence
Day holiday at the event by posing
for photos with the Lincolns,
asking them questions about their
era and waving American flags
that the couple passed out. Along
with visits from the two talented
impersonators, attendees were
encouraged to dress like Abe or
Mary Todd for a special costume
contest.
Music was provided by local
rock band Fake I.D. — who
played a variety of hits including
“Jenny (867-5309),” “Honky
Tonk Woman” and “Two Tickets
to Paradise” — and Smokin’ Z
BBQ food truck and Public Landing
outdoor bar offered food and
drinks.
Public Landing manager, Anita
Donnelly, explained that one
drink in particular appeared to be
a favorite with the crowd.
“We have a refreshing, delicious
raspberry vodka punch,”
she said. “Everyone seems to love
it. We sold out last time we were
here.”
The members of Gallery Seven,
located in the Gaylord Building at
200 W. 8th St. Ste 200, have enjoyed
seeing the event grow with
each monthly installment.
“We were very encouraged by
the crowd we had last month,” explained
Jay Anderson from inside
the gallery, which is open during
Fridays in the Park with Abe.
“Everyone said they had a great
time and it looks like we’re going
to have an even bigger turnout tonight.”
Currently, Gallery Seven is
hosting its Members Exhibit
through Aug. 1, and the works of
Margie Glass and Sherri Denault
are to be featured from Aug. 3-31.
Gallery Seven is also making a
call for artists of all mediums to
apply to participate in its upcoming
Art of Illinois: A Bicentennial
Celebration juried show, which
is to run in October. Submissions
are to be accepted through Aug.
15. More information is available
online at galleryseven.net.
Fridays in the Park with Abe
takes place at Lincoln Landing
on the first Friday of each month,
and the series runs through Oct.
5. Jackie Baker, Chris Ausec and
Joann Pribish attended the July
6 edition after learning about it
at the last Cruisin’ Into Lockport
Bryan Falat (front) takes a photo of his son, Brandon Falat, with Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by Max Daniels)
Friday, July 6, during the Fridays in the Park with Abe event. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
Gallery Seven member Donna Nevels raises her hand as the band thanks her for her work in putting together
the event.
concert, and they are already singing
the praises of the program.
“I think a lot of people forget
how historic this area is — even
I do and I’ve lived here for a lot
of years — and it’s beautiful,”
Baker said. “How do you get a
better evening than this with great
people and music? And it’s free.”

Phase 2 of storm
drain improvements
set to begin
Submitted by Will County
The second phase of storm
drain construction in the
Fairmont neighborhood in
Lockport Township was announced
Friday, July 6, by
the Will County Board.
Continued construction of
the new storm water management
system is to bring
additional relief to residents.
Fairmont has long been
plagued by flooding issues
and phase one of construction
was recently completed.
“The relief that the new
storm water system will bring
to the residents in Fairmont
is immense,” said Lauren
Staley-Ferry, County Board
Member and Minority Whip
(D-Joliet) who also represents
the Fairmont neighborhood
in District 9. “This project
will dramatically improve
people’s lives.”
The Will County Board approved
a $169,491 contract
with Austin Tyler Construction
at its June board meeting.
Of the seven companies
that submitted bids, Martam
was the lowest. Like phase
one of the drainage project,
phase two is being paid for
with a grant from the U.S.
Department of Housing and
Urban Development.
“I’m extremely happy that
the board continues to address
the flooding problems
in the Fairmont neighborhood,”
said Annette Parker, a
Will County Board Member
(R-Crest Hill) who represents
District 9. “Phase one
went well, and we’re happy
to keep working through the
community with these upgrades.”
The Will County Board
has been working to ease
flooding issues in Fairmont
for years. This second contract
is to build on the existing
system that was recently
completed after the County
Board approved the phase
one contract in September of
2017.
Construction is expected
to continue northward
through the neighborhood as
it is completed.
Lockport Scout spruces up
library for Eagle project
Staff Report
The exterior of the White Oak Library
Lockport Branch Library received a landscaping
makeover June 23 thanks to 16-yearold
Josh Amann.
Amann, a Life Scout with Troop 50 in
Lockport, landscaped the back of the library
for his Eagle project. That included planting
various shrubs, grasses and flowers,
according to Amann. With the help of his
fellow Scouts, their parents, his family and
friends, Amann planted more than 90 plants,
he said. But before they could plant anything
new, the team had to remove the old sod and
mulch, put down landscape fabric and put
down mulch.
Amann received donations for the project
from Cedar Path Nursery, Aspin Valley
Landscaping Supplies, Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 5788, Homer Tree Services, Jimmy
Johns of Lockport, as well as his friends
and family.
For his Eagle project, Josh Amann landscaped the back exterior of the White Oak Library
Former St. Dennis student gives back to school
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Assistant Editor
Earning an Eagle badge
doesn’t just represent all the
hours that went it to receiving
it, or the work done to
help the community, it also
represents the leadership
potential the recipient has.
Chris Perez, an incoming
senior at Lockport
Township High School
and Scout member of Boys
Scout Troop 50 in Lockport,
learned a lot about himself
through his service project
that will soon give him his
Eagle badge.
“[Working toward an
Eagle badge] gives you an
opportunity, not only to help
out and give back to your
community, but it also helps
you kind of prepare for life,
kind of gets you ready for
the real world — the job
world,” Perez said. “For me,
it helps me become a better
leader, the whole Boy Scouts
program helps you become a
better leader and better person
in general, and looking
at an Eagle [badge] basically
challenges you to see how
much you’ve learned and put
it all together.”
On June 11, 13 and 20,
Perez did some landscaping
around the flagpole in
front of St. Dennis School in
Lockport, as well as around
the school’s sign. A fellow
Scout in his troop was to
take on the flagpole landscaping
for his own Eagle
badge project, but ran out
of time and material to complete
it, so Perez decided to
take on the task himself.
“I ended up taking that
part of the project, the flagpole
and the sign because I
went to St. Dennis when I
was younger,” Perez said. “I
was there from preschool all
the way to eighth grade, so
that school is like a home to
me, so I wanted to do something
for them.”
Throughout the three days,
a total of 80 hours were put
into the project. There were
17 people who helped Perez,
including troop members
and their parents. The flagpole
now has a sturdy base
made of bricks, that was previously
getting worn. The
group also planted flowers
around the school’s sign and
created a border around it of
bricks to make it stand out.
“Basically, the project
was to pretty up the sign and
make the flagpole safer for
kids to stand up on and raise
the flag and lower it, because
originally the base for it was
really bad and it was broken
down and it was wasn’t really
safe for kids to stand up
on,” Perez said.
Over the course of a month,
Perez raised $1,025 through a
GoFundMe page he created
to help pay for the materials
he needed. He ended up donating
$173.64 from that total
to St. Dennis because he
raised more money than he
needed for the project.
“For me, most people for
Eagle badge they try and do
something for their community
and school and all that,
for me it’s the same way,”
Perez said. “I said before, St.
Dennis was a second home
to me, the school and people
there helped me to be the
Boy Scout and the person I
am today. It was kind of a
way to give back and it made
me feel like I was thanking
them for everything they’ve
done for me so it was kind
of way to say thank you to
them.”
His favorite part of the
project was seeing Principal
Lisa Smith’s reaction a week
after it was all done.
“She was very happy, and
I feel like she was just in awe
of what we had done there
for the school, so she was
pretty happy and excited I
feel,” he said.
Giving back to a place that
meant so much to Perez was
worth every hour it took to
plan the project and execute
it. There were minor bumps
in the road, such as the rainy
weather that resulted in the
project being postponed, and
modifying the plan to fix the
flagpole base. Regardless
of it all, earning his Eagle
badge is just an added bonus
to helping a school he calls
his second home.
“I feel it’s a pretty big deal
and it’s something that I can
tell the younger Scouts within
my troop to try to work for
it because it really pays off
in the long run,” Perez said.
“It’s a chance for you to see
how good of a leader you
can be.”

Village Commons to kick off
Triple Play
The lawn of Village
Commons was filled with
sunglasses and smiles the
evening of June 30, as area
residents anxiously waited
for headliner Melissa Etheridge
to hit the stage. While
the summer heat and humidity
were in full effect, that
could not stop attendees
from rocking out during the
first concert of the 2018 Triple
Play series.
The Village’s first concert
of the season featured local
Chicago favorite Empty
guest Dennis Quaid and the
Sharks. But the highlight
of the night came with the
headliner: Melissa Etheridge.
The Triple Play concert
series is a unique experience
offered to New Lenox residents,
where for just $20 per
concert, attendees can enjoy
award-winning musicians
in the comfort of their own
community.
New Lenox Mayor Tim
not have been happier with
the turnout of the first concert
of the series, despite the
heat.
“The weather is absurdly
hot, but everyone here is in
a great mood,” Baldermann
said. “So, we’re excited to
have them here [tonight].
It’s going to be a really good
night for everybody. We’ve
been very fortunate that
we’ve had a lot of great acts
here, and [Etheridge] certainly
is one of the best.”
The concert series is to
continue with Chris Isaak on
Aug. 11. Tickets are available
The Mokena resident
of 28 years came to Illinois
from Minnesota for a
teaching position in 1972,
and also worked at Trinity
Services before working at
the library. Baker started
out as a part-time circulation
clerk and moved her
way up to technical services
and the head of circulation
desk.
“It was a very hard decision
to decide to retire, but
I have grandchildren now,”
Baker said.
Assistant Director Luke
Surdel worked alongside
Baker every Saturday for the
10 years he has been with
the library.
“We, and the community,
are very grateful for her retiring
but still being a part of
us,” Surdel said.
Baker said she plans to
stay on with the library as a
part-time fill-in.
“I like working here,”
Baker said. “It’s a great staff
and a wonderful library. I
would be crazy not to work
here. The library is like a
family.”
FROM THE HOMER HORIZON
Homer man gets chance to
thank Life Time employees
who saved his life
It was the quick thinking
of four Life Time employees
in Orland Park that
gave Mike Sanocki a second
chance in a matter of 30 seconds.
Sanocki, 62, suffered from
cardiac arrest May 9 when
he passed out after doing his
30-minute workout on the elliptical.
Just 30 feet in front
of where trainer Jerry Jasper
was teaching a Pilates class,
the Homer Glen resident fell
to the ground, and the staff
took immediate action.
It is because of Jasper,
trainer Cooper Garland, general
manager Jason Fox and
Ricky Cruz that Sanocki is
alive today.
On June 26, the four Life
Time employees were recognized
at the Orland Fire
Protection District Board of
Trustees meeting and awarded
the Battalion Chief William
Bonnar Sr. Citizen Life
Saving Award.
“I want those guys to get
all the credit,” Sanocki said.
“I don’t want it to be a story
about me, how I survived a
cardiac arrest, because that’s
not a story; the story is that
these guys saved my life,
and I wanted them to get the
attention that they deserve,
and the paramedics.”
When Sanocki passed out,
Garland immediately got
on the walkie-talkie system
and asked the front desk to
call 911. Afterward, Cruz
grabbed an automated external
defibrillator and gave
it to Jasper. Using the AED,
he applied electric shock to
Sanocki’s chest.
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Eight months after heart
attack, Tinley Park runner is
back competing
Tinley Park’s Tom “Doc”
Mahoney finished 445th out
of 620 runners at the Stars
and Stripes 5K race on July 4.
He covered the McCarthy
Park course in 39 minutes
and 18.7 seconds. That was
more than 12 minutes behind
race winner Mitch Gilbert.
Mahoney’s statistics were
far from remarkable.
The fact that he finished
the race was remarkable.
Heck, the fact that he
started the race was pretty
darn noteworthy, too.
Mahoney, 68, suffered a
heart attack on Nov. 5 during
Tinley Park’s Turkey Trot.
At the time, the man — who
has a garage wall full of bibs
from previous races and had
carried the American flag
during 11 previous Stars and
Stripes event — was fighting
for his life.
He lived. And he soon got
back to running practice.
The Stars and Stripes race
was his first race back since
the Turkey Trot.
Finishing 445th on a humid,
90-plus-degree day was
a proud moment for him.
“Just finishing is an accomplishment,”
he said minutes
after the race. “Gone are
the 24-minute days. But you
hit that turn there and you
see the finish line and it was
pretty … it was emotional.”
Even though he did a trial
run two days prior, there
were some anxious moments.
“I was worried all week,
with the temperature being
90 degrees and all of that
humidity,” Mahoney said.
“But I was still determined I
was going to finish no matter
what.”
FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Orland Park man among
hundreds charged in
national health care fraud
investigation
An Orland Park doctor is
facing federal charges after
he was among more than
600 individuals reportedly
caught in a recent national
health care fraud enforcement
action.
Several Chicago-area
medical professionals, including
four physicians, are
facing charges as part of the
health care fraud enforcement
action, which is being
called the largest in Department
of Justice history, according
to a press release issued
June 28 by the United
States Attorney’s Office for
the Northern District of Illinois.
Dr. Florentino Leong, 78,
of Orland Park, was charged
with health care fraud and
making false statements in a
health care matter. He in one
of two Illinois cases involving
licensed physicians who
falsely certified patients for
home-health services reimbursed
by Medicare, according
to the release.
The doctors allegedly authorized
in-home services,
despite knowing patients
were not confined to the
homes and did not require
the services.
Leong was to be arraigned
June 28 before U.S. District
Judge Manish S. Shah.
The national action reportedly
was taken by Medicare
Fraud Strike Force.
Charges were filed against
more than 150 physicians,
as well as nurses and other
licensed medical professionals,
who allegedly participated
in fraud schemes
involving approximately $2
billion in false billings.
Several doctors additionally
were charged in relation
to prescribing and distributing
opioids and other
narcotics, according to the
release. The Department of
Health and Human Services
reportedly has initiated suspension
actions against numerous
providers, including
doctors, nurses and pharmacists.
Frankfort lacrosse player
named to Under Armour
Midwest team
This past season, the Illinois
High School Association
recognized lacrosse as
an official sport.
And next spring, the combined
Lincoln-Way co-op
team will have an outstanding
player enter its lacrosse
program.
That is Erika Ho, who already
has attained national
recognition in the sport.
The Frankfort resident
competed in the annual Under
Armour All-America
Lacrosse games. The event
was held between June 28
and July 1 at Johns Hopkins
University and Towson
University in Baltimore,
Maryland.
Ho, who plays midfield
and takes the draw, was on
the Midwest Girls Command
team, which features
incoming high school freshman
and sophomores from
eight Midwestern states.
She was selected for the
team after nearly 70 people
tried out June 13 at Olentangy
Liberty High School
in Powell, Ohio.
“It was a different experience
competing with both
[Command] classes, including
the upperclassmen
[Highlight Division — for
junior and senior] classes,”
she said. “It is something I
will cherish.”
Being involved in the
game of lacrosse is something
that Ho has cherished
for many years of her young
life. Her father, David, grew
up around the game.
“I grew up in Philadelphia
and played in high school
there,” David Ho said of his
lacrosse roots. “I coached
lacrosse from 2004-2016,
and had Erika play a little
coed early on. I coached
boys lacrosse, which is
much more physical. So, I
taught her that way.”
max@lockportlegend.com
For me, it was a wallscraping
home run
during a summer
league baseball game in
Bolingbrook.
All things considered,
that was my greatest athletic
accomplishment. It wasn’t
my most impressive, or
most important, but when
push comes to shove, it was
my shining moment. It came
between my freshman and
sophomore years of high
school, and although I was
always an above-average
baseball player, my small
stature and slight build
prevented me from hitting
for much power before that
moment.
During my prepubescent
power outage, I never
once hit a home run over
the fence. I hit a few little
league home runs where
the fielders booted the ball
all over the place, but I had
never seen one fly over the
fence until that gusty afternoon
at Bolingbrook High
School when I connected
with a belt-high fastball and
saw it clear the left-centerfield
wall.
I wasn’t alone as a nonpower
hitter on my team,
so parking one over the
fence was a big deal. Even
though it was just a summer
league game, that home run
Moment of glory
was the talk of the team for
a few weeks and made me
feel like a real ball player.
I was by no means a
superstar athlete like many
of the Porters we feature
weekly in The Legend, but
as I mentioned before, I had
more impressive athletic
feats than my Bolingbrook
home run, such as running
three miles in 18 minutes
during my brief cross
country career. And I also
had some more exhilarating
moments during my senior
baseball season at Tinley
Park High School during
which I smacked a walk-off
single and scored the winning
run from first base on
a game-ending double on
different occasions.
But there was something
different about that home
run that makes it stick out
in my mind and brings a
smile to my face every time
I think about it. It took me
a few minutes to pinpoint
exactly what was my
greatest athletic achievement,
but after considering
everything on the not-aslong-as-I-would-like
list
of my athletic conquests,
the choice was clear. Now,
the same could be said of
Lockport wrestler Matt
Ramos.
Ramos recently took
home a gold medal while
representing the United
States in the Cadet World
Championships in Croatia,
and we have all the details
on Page 38 in this week’s
issue.
Merely qualifying for an
international tournament
where he would represent
the USA is impressive
enough, but to fly to Croatia
and win the whole dang
thing? That might be better
than my summer league
home run. All kidding
aside, it is an incredible
achievement for Ramos,
who was also a member
of the Porters’ undefeated
2016-2017 state championship
team.
For my ego’s sake, I
wouldn’t want to compare
trophy cases with Ramos,
but being able to include his
story of triumph in the paper
did afford me an excuse to
revel in my own moments
of (relative) athletic glory.
I expect Ramos and all the
other athletes in Lockport
to continue giving me those
opportunities, and I look
forward to covering it all
inside these pages.
Summer art contest asks for input from residents
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Assistant Editor
With summertime in full swing,
there are countless activities to do
both indoors and outdoors to soak
up the season.
This year, a new activity for all
ages called the Local Artist Choice
Awards will bring people right to
the heart of downtown Lockport.
The City of Lockport’s Summer
Art Series Committee selected 18
art pieces that are on display at
various businesses downtown to
attract more foot traffic during this
summer’s State Street construction.
People are encouraged to visit
the businesses and vote for their
favorite pieces of art through July
23. The Top 3 pieces are to be announced
July 26 at The Roxy Theater.
“First of all, we would like to
increase foot traffic into our downtown
businesses, especially during
the construction season, because
the construction is an obstacle, so
we don’t want it to be,” said Jodi
Herman, an administrative assistant
with the City and member of
the Summer Art Series Committee.
“And we want people to see what
these businesses have to offer. So,
it’s nice to get people to come into
a business they may not have visited
ever before.”
With everything Lockport has
to offer, from restaurants to museums,
Herman said guests and community
members are sure to enjoy
the experience.
“We’re doing a lot of things [to]
just encourage people to come and
see what we have in our downtown
area,” Herman said. “Although all
of Lockport is nice to see, we do
have a lot of hidden gems in the
downtown area.”
The current art pieces on display
are from Lockport residents and
people from surrounding towns
ages 18 and older. Each of the 18
art pieces follow the theme “merging
art and industry,” which reflects
on the historical buildings in Lockport
and the industrial aspects of
the town, such as the I&M Canal.
“[I like] that it’s about our town,
and it’s about loving Lockport,
loving our businesses and appreciating
our local Lockport people,”
said Wendy Streit, who is the chairperson
of the Summer Art Series
Committee.
The 18 host businesses have a
poster in their front window to let
people know they have an art piece
inside. The artwork varies from
paintings to 3-D designs.
“From the feedback I’m getting
from a few of the hosting businesses,
they told me that people
are loving it,” Herman said.
“They’ve had quite a bit of
traffic already, and one business
is saying they had two
women coming like from,
I want to say Arlington
Heights, where they made a
destination day out of it because
of the contest.”
According to Herman,
the art submissions were
not guaranteed acceptance
because there were more
pieces than there were host
businesses. The artists were
chosen at the committee’s
June 5 meeting, and the art
was due by June 18.
“This was definitely a
committee effort,” Streit
said. “All of us brainstormed
and worked together to come
up with something that we
could offer to the community.
I also would say that
we were very inspired by the
award from the National Endowment
of the Arts for the
unLOCK art.”
The Gaylord Building has
led the program, unLOCK:
Merging Art and Industry
in downtown Lockport,
which will bring 10 artists
throughout the summer
to work with the community
to create art unique to
the city.
The first place winner
in the 18 and up category
of the Local Artist Choice
Awards will win $2,500.
Second place will win
$1,000 and third place will
win $500. The age 17 and
under category pieces will
be displayed starting July 31
and ending Aug. 20. Those
winners will be recognized
Aug. 23 at The Roxy Theater.
People will be able
to vote on eight pieces
of art.
“I thought it was an honorable
turnout, and we had
quite a few wonderful options
to choose from,” Streit
said. “We would have liked
to have seen more come
from the children’s level of
art, but you know, it’s the
first time we’ve ever done
it and maybe people will be
inspired more in the future.
But we were really pleased
in general with what people
brought in for us.”
Each person is allowed
to vote once a day for their
favorite piece of art. For
Weathering the Storm
Wet month ends with heat, humidity
June weather in
review
Mark T. Carroll
Contributing Columnist
Above-normal temperatures
in June
included a hot weekend
in the middle of the
month and a hot and very
humid weekend to conclude
the month.
For the month, we had
five days with the high
temperature above 90
degrees. Normally there
are three days during the
month of June with the
temperature reaching 90
for June at Chicago
O’Hare International
Airport was 2.6 degrees
above normal.
On June 16, the high temperature
in Joliet reached 93
degrees at the airport. Joliet
Chicago Midway International
Airport reached
95 degrees on June 17 and
Father’s Day since 1995.
The heat returned to
conclude the month. Joliet’s
airport had a high temperature
of 93 degrees on June
29 and 30, with the heat
index reaching 114 degrees
June 29 and 111 degrees
June 30.
Midewin National
Tallgrass Prairie in Elwood
also reached 93 degrees on
June 29, with the heat index
reaching 116 degrees.
Precipitation also was
above normal for the month
of June. The normal precipitation
total is near 3.5 inches
for June. Flooding occurred
in the far northwest suburbs.
Manhattan tornado
At 6:54 p.m. June 26, an
EF1 tornado touched down
in Manhattan. The tornado
was on the ground for 5
minutes, with an estimated
peak wind of 95 mph. The
tornado traveled 1.13 miles
with a maximum width of
100 yards. No injuries were
reported.
According to the National
Weather Service summary
of the tornado, “Damage
was first observed at a farm
along Bruns Road. Two
large trees lost limbs or
portions of their trunk, and
numerous smaller branches
were broken. The resident
reported seeing a mass of
wind and clouds upstream
from this location but not a
funnel. There was no damage
observed in the crops
upstream from this location,
at least what could be seen
from the ground. There was
debris in the field north
of the farm, but no other
damage was visible until the
tornado entered Manhattan
near the park. Damage in
Manhattan consisted of numerous
snapped branches of
various size and at least two
large (greater than 1 foot
diameter) trunks snapped.
Damage in the park was
about 100 yards wide.
Several buildings in town
received just minor damage,
but the post office lost a
portion of its roof covering,
and a building next door had
broken windows, as well as
shingle and roof damage.
The tornado dissipated near
Prairie Street as it exited
downtown. No damage was
seen in the tree line north of
Prairie Street.”
Lightning safety tips
Do not get caught outside.
No place outside is safe
when a thunderstorm is in
the area. Get inside as soon
as you hear thunder. Run
to a substantial building or
hard-topped metal vehicle
as fast as you can.
If you cannot get to a safe
building or vehicle, do the
following.
• Avoid open areas. Do
not be the tallest object in
the area.
• Stay away from isolated
tall trees, towers or utility
poles. Lightning tends to
strike the taller objects in
an area.
• Stay away from metal
conductors, such as wires or
fences. Metal does not attract
lightning, but lightning
can travel long distances
through it.
• If you are with a group
of people, spread out. While
this actually increases
the chance that someone
might get struck, it tends to
Regulars at Tribes — be it
the Mokena Beer Company
or the Tinley Park Alehouse
— know that the menu is always
subject to change.
The beer, in particular, is
an ever-rotating combination
of Tribes’ own brews and
some of the best from around
the country. It changes so frequently
the restaurants do not
bother printing beer menus
but handle the offerings digitally,
through large-screen
televisions and a website.
But the food choices,
while printed, also see frequent
changes at the behest
of Chef Mitch Garcia, who
has been with the company
for the past three years. In
that short time, his major
menu shake-ups, which
come up to three times a
year, have included everything
from Cuban fare to
South American to Asian,
as well as regional offerings
from the United States such
as Southern or Cajun cuisine.
“We try to keep the diversity
there,” Garcia said.
Right now, the Mains portion
of the menu is highlighting
the Cast Iron Hot Brown
($16), which features roasted
turkey breast, peppered
bacon, Parmigiano-Reggiano,
heirloom tomatoes and a
Mornay sauce.
The dish traces its lineage
back to The Brown Hotel in
Louisville, Kentucky. And
Garcia said he discovered it
through research but “we put
our own twist on it,” with
the addition of heirloom tomatoes.
The skillet also gave Garcia
a chance to show off his
talent for crafting tasty sauces,
which he honed while
working for brands like
Rosebud, The Cheesecake
Factory and Toby Keith’s I
Love This Bar & Grill. He
also spent time cooking in
Miami and Louisiana before
taking the job at Tribes.
“I was looking for a gig,
something in the gastropub
genre,” he said. “I love the
creativity from start to finish
in developing a menu.”
Garcia said he found a
good connection in owner
Niall Freyne at Tribes and
has not regretted his decision
to join the team. The new
role has given him a challenge
he approaches with a
“combined thought process”
of what might match the
beers, what works well for
the stations in the kitchen
and, most importantly, what
the customers enjoy.
Garcia admitted since
joining Tribes he made one
notable gaffe with the last
one on that list, regarding
the customer-favorite Maine
lobster roll ($23), served
The Cast Iron Hot Brown ($16) at Tribes Alehouse in Tinley Park features roasted turkey breast, peppered bacon, Parmigiano-Reggiano,
heirloom tomatoes and a Mornay sauce. Photos by Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
The Maine lobster roll ($23) — with Old Bay and drawn butter,
served warm — remains a favorite among customers.
simply — warm, with Old
Bay and drawn butter.
“It’s a very popular dish
from that Eastern seaboard,”
Garcia said. “It’s a hearty
sandwich, and we don’t
skimp on weight.
“We took it off [the menu]
one cycle, and people were
The Burger of the Day ($13) at Tribes may include creations
like this Angus beef burger on an Asiago roll with a melted
cheese curd patty, barbecue brisket and onion strings.
on our heads. We won’t
make that mistake again.”
And while the grilled
burgers have been a mainstay
at Tribes for years, Garcia
gets to have some fun
with the Burger of the Day
($13) creations, such as a recent
option that featured Angus
beef on an Asiago roll,
with a melted patty of cheese
curds, barbecue brisket and
onion strings.
It all adds up to a good time
for Garcia, who noted what
he has done with the menu is
only possible because of the
people around him.
“I’ve got a solid team back
there,” he said of the kitchen.
“And I can’t say enough
about Niall.
“It’s probably the happiest
I’ve ever been. And proud,
too.”

No Money Down at Westgate Manor in Peotone
New Construction Homes from $239,900
Thinking hard about renting
instead of owning? Think again,
say the experts—who recommend
crunching the numbers carefully
to see which side of the fence the
grass is greener on. More often
than not, the greener side—as in
grass and money—is the one you
end up owning.
While it’s true that home
mortgage interest rates are slowly
on the rise, the same can be said
of monthly rents for residential
units, especially considering that
the greater Chicagoland rental
market has become more active
in recent months.
“Shoppers who don’t have
much of a down payment saved
up or who are worried about
qualifying for a loan due to a
moderate income can still share
in the great American dream of
homeownership,” said Bryan
Nooner, President of Distinctive
Home Builders. “Through our
preferred lender a new home can
be had with no money down so
they don’t have to worry about
raising money for closing costs
or a down payment. While some
conditions apply, for first-time
buyers and shoppers on a tight
budget, it’s the perfect scenario.”
“Over the long term, however,
the advantages of purchasing
and owning your own residence
significantly outnumber the
plusses of renting,” added
Nooner. “The most important
distinction between renting and
owning is the ability to build
equity in your property, which is
only possible with the latter. When
you purchase a home and pay a
monthly mortgage, the portion
applied toward principal every
month is your money coming
back to you—a reflection of the
value of your equity. One of the
other major boons to buying
a home is the ability to deduct
(within certain limits), your
property taxes and mortgage loan
interest on your yearly federal and
state income tax returns.”
The financing offer applies to
Westgate Manor buyers who opt
for a home mortgage loan through
Distinctive Home Builders’
preferred lender, who is available
to meet with home shoppers on
the weekends or by appointment
at Distinctive Home Builders
Single Family Home Center in
Manhattan at 24458 S. Rt. 52,
Manhattan, IL. 60422. Some
conditions apply, see a Distinctive
Home Builders representative for
complete details.
Peotone is a family-friendly
village and is one of the best kept
secrets among new home seekers,
according to Nooner. Several
factors attracted Distinctive
Home Builders to build 38 homes
at Westgate Manor, not the least
of which was its convenient
location between Interstate 57
and Illinois Route 50 and easy
access to I-80. Commuters enjoy
several nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
Distinctive offers a wide variety
of home styles and selections
— buyers can choose among 12
different brick and frame construction
designs, each available in
three to eight different elevations.
Square footages span 1,600 to
2,500 for ranches and 1,800 to
3,000 for two-story homes. Prices
start at $239,900.
Westgate Manor offers three
to four bedrooms, two to threeand-a-half
baths, full basement,
formal dining room, vaulted, tray
or nine-foot first-floor ceilings, a
large kitchen with custom maple
cabinets, family room or great
room, and concrete driveways.
Depending on the home selected,
other standard amenities can
include a living room, den,
dinette, a tray or vaulted ceiling
in the master bedroom, as well
as dual-zoned heating and air
conditioning.
Premium standard features
included at Westgate Manor are
brick front exteriors on the first
floor, free basements in most
models, ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the
kitchen, baths
and foyer; and
custom maple
cabinets. Kitchen
cabinets feature
solid wood
construction (no
particle board),
have solid wood
drawers with dove tail joints,
which is rare in the marketplace.
“When you build a new home
with Distinctive, you are receiving
a hand-crafted home with
custom made cabinets,” noted
Nooner. This year, Distinctive is
celebrating 32 years of building
thousands of homes throughout
the Will and south Cook County
areas.
Distinctive Home Builders, an
industry leading innovator, offers
the fastest build times (90 working
days) with a “Zero Punch List”
closing policy. Prior to closing,
each home undergoes a 100-point
checklist to insure the home
measures up to our high quality
standards.
Customers stay connected to the
progress of their home from start
to finish through Distinctive’s
unique construction portal.
Customers download the app to
stay in touch with their new home
24/7 from anywhere in the world.
The app allows customers to see
the progress of their home, access
their documents and easily share
photos and updates with family
and friends on social media.
As a semi-custom builder,
Distinctive Home Builders
can modify any of its standard
designs to cater to a customer’s
tastes, which means that moving
walls, adding extra windows or
even extending the garage are all
possible.
All homes are highly energy
efficient and are built to National
Energy Code guidelines. Every
home built has upgraded wall
and ceiling insulation values with
energy efficient windows and
high efficiency furnaces. Before
homeowners take possession of
their new home, a blower door test
is performed to verify that each
home passes a set of stringent
guidelines to insure homes are
tight and energy efficient.
“Ultimately, when you add up
all the pros of purchasing, most
owners inevitably gain more
tangible and intangible benefits
your own.”
than renters do,”
Nooner. said. “It
simply makes better
financial sense to
build equity, reduce
your taxes, and
make your money
grow
through
appreciation — all
while living in a
22ND CENTURY MEDIA is looking
10 Questions
with Blake Sartin
Interested individuals should send
an email with a resume and any clips to
CHICAGO SOUTHWEST
CHICAGO NORTHSHORE
MALIBU
Blake Sartin will be a senior
at Lockport Township this
fall. He is a forward on the
basketball team and recently
helped the Porters to their
best summer showing in
more than a decade.
The basketball team
reached the quarterfinals
at the Morris
Shootout for the first
time since 2006. What
was the key to the
team’s summer success?
I feel like our competitiveness
and cohesiveness
played a role. Our willingness
to pass the ball and trust
each other. Everyone on the
team has worked on their
game, and that helped, also.
How long have you
been playing basketball?
I started playing when I
was 8. I first played at the
Lockport [Township] Park
District, and then went to
AAU ball. My parents, Anthony
and Yolanda, got me
into it.
Do you play any other
sports?
I did track and field my
freshman year and most of
my sophomore year, but it
conflicted with AAU basketball,
so I gave it up. I play
AAU for Next Generation,
out of Aurora.
What is it about the
game of basketball that
makes it the sport for
you?
It’s fast, it’s exciting and
something is always happening.
Since I was a kid,
I’ve loved watching the
NBA and the [Chicago]
Bulls. I love the competitiveness
and the camaraderie
of the game.
Who is your favorite
NBA player?
Growing up, it was Derrick
Rose. I watched him in
high school at Simeon. But
ever since 2010, it’s been
Paul George. My dad is
from Indianapolis, and Paul
George played there [from
2010-2017].
This past regular season
was a disappointment
for the Porters basketball
team. What factors
are going to change that
this November?
Our cohesiveness will be
a factor. We all enjoy being
around each other, and
that makes us play hard.
We hold each other accountable,
and then when
it comes to crunch time, we
have enough trust in each
other to make plays.
Do you have any pregame
superstitions?
I have a whole playlist of
songs, but I listen to only the
first five on it. Also, when I
put my left sock on, I pull it
all the way up and then flip
it over [from the top]. I also
pray for 30 seconds or so,
and I’m good to go.
Photo submitted
What have you learned
from Lockport coach
Brett Hespell?
I’ve learned that he always
expects my best, on
and off the court. He’s
brought out my leadership
skills and helps with things
that are not even basketball
related.
Do you plan to play
basketball in college?
I hope to. But it’s a matter
of getting the right offer and
being able to go to the right
place for my major, which is
communications with sports
media and business.
What is the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
I like the support from
everyone at Lockport. It’s
crazy to see all the support
Chmielewski chasing starting spot at Southern
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
Matt Chmielewski will never
forget what it was like to start his
first college football game.
A 2016 Lockport Township High
School graduate, he signed to continue
his football career at Southern
Illinois University. After redshirting
his freshman year, Chmielewski
was a starter on the offensive
line for the Salukis as they took the
field in the season opener on Sept.
9, 2017 against visiting Mississippi
Valley Sate in Carbondale.
“It was awesome,” Chmielewski
said of starting at left guard in the
Salukis 55-3 victory that day. “It
was great to be back out on the
field and out there working with
pads on. As a redshirt freshman,
time seems so long and it’s so hard
watching. You want to be out there,
on the field, contributing in a positive
manor.”
Chmielewski also started in
the second week, too. That was
Sept. 16 and was a 35-17 victory
at Southeast Missouri. He quickly
noticed one particular difference
between the high school and college
games.
“Just the game speed in general,”
Chmielewski said of the difference.
“Each level you move up
gets faster, faster, and faster. It’s
just that everybody is good and
you have to separate yourself. Plus,
there’s the mental part of the game.
Just making sure you’re in the right
spot and always knowing your responsibility.”
While Chmielewski proved
himself capable enough to earn a
starting spot, he was also in there
because of an injury to the normal
starting left guard Josh Podzielinski.
So, while Chmielewski played
in the remaining nine Salukis’
games (they went 4-7), most of
those were on special teams. He
got back in for some more offensive
line play, but mostly blocked
on field goal and extra point attempts
and was also on the kickoff
receiving team.
Chmielewski, who is listed at
Lockport Township High School graduate Matt Chmielewski, of the class of 2016, will be competing for a starting spot along the offensive line at
Southern Illinois University this fall. Photo submitted
6-foot-4 and 294 pounds, did get
an opportunity with the ball in his
hands.
“Yes, I got one at South Dakota
State,” he said of the teams 49-14
loss on Oct. 7 in Brookings, South
Dakota. “But I fair caught it. The
coaches told me to fair catch the
ball and I didn’t want to make them
mad.”
Despite having the experience
of fielding a kickoff, Chmielewski
doesn’t expect to be included in the
offensive gameplan anytime soon.
“I doubt if I would, but that
would be awesome,” Chmielewski
said of the possibility of being used
as a ball carrier near the goal line.
“That’s every lineman’s dream to
score a touchdown.”
When he was at Lockport,
Chmielewski made an impact on
the offensive line as a three-year
starter. He was named as an honorable
mention All-State selection in
his senior season of 2015 as well
as a two-time Academic All-State
selection. He was a two-time firstteam
All-Conference honoree in
the SouthWest Suburban Blue as
the Porters rushing attack gained
more than 1,000 yards in that pair
of years.
He also competed in track and
field, where he qualified for the
state meet in the shot put, and also
participated in basketball.
“He’s a great kid,” Lockport
football coach Dan Starkey said.
“He going to be right in the mix
this season at Southern, and the
thing about Matt is that he’s a good
athlete. He’s very bright and a hard
worker in the weight room and
those things do great things for you
as an offensive lineman.
“We had Matt and Quinn Polaski
[who was 6-foot-6, 305 pounds]
side-by-side and our line leaned
to the left as far as running behind
them. I think Matt is going to make
big contributions. I know the head
coach there, Nick Hill, and this is a
good time to be at Southern.”
Chmielewski has been at Southern
working out and taking classes
most of the summer. He got his
football career start later than most,
not playing until high school.
“I played a lot of sports, like
baseball and basketball, before
high school,” said Chmielewski,
who also played basketball his senior
year at Lockport and placed
11th in the shot put in the Class 3A
state finals as a senior. “I first tried
football in high school because I’m
big and it looked fun. I tried it out
and never looked back.”
Now, he hopes to once again
crack the Salukis starting lineup.
The position competition will start
next month and Chmielewski plans
to be right in the mix for that left
guard spot. But no matter what, he
knows he’s in the right place.
“I’m looking to play more, I’m
looking for a spot, but no matter
what I’m looking to play in a
lot of games,” said Chmielewski,
who is majoring in mechanical engineering.
“At Southern, it’s just
the people, the atmosphere and
the love and care everyone has for
each other.
“It’s one big happy family and I
also love that everything is set up
right there. Everything is close on
the campus and right next to each
other. I get to play and work out
with my brothers and I can’t wait
to play football again.”

Porters’ Ramos wins gold in Croatia
Soon-to-be senior only
second LTHS wrestler to
ever earn top finish on
international level
Erin Redmond
Freelance Reporter
This year, Matt Ramos gave the
United States one heck of a birthday
present: a gold medal.
The soon-to-be Lockport senior
wrestler captured the 51-kilogram
crown at the Cadet World Championships
and stood high atop the podium,
draped in the American flag,
on July 4 in Zagreb, Croatia.
Ramos bested Kota Takahashi,
of Japan, by fall at 2:40 in the finals
match.
“Once I won my [semifinal]
match, I was very happy just to
know that I solidified a medal, but
I didn’t want to settle for the silver,”
Ramos said. “I got my rest
throughout the whole day, and I
went out there with my mind set on
that gold medal. … Going into the
match, I was calm. I went out there
and had a good time and just tried
not to do anything stupid.
“I went out there and just wrestled
how I always do, didn’t change
anything and just wrestled [like]
myself and pulled out the gold
medal.”
Ramos joins Haley Augello, who
won her Cadet World Championship
in 2011, as the only Lockport
wrestlers to ever win an international
event. Augello represented
Team USA at the Olympics in 2016
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The LTHS wrestler made the trip
with coach Jameson Oster. Oster is
the first Porter to coach at the international
level and was making
the most of the experience, but also
treating it as business as usual.
“The environment was obviously
different, and the way the tournament
was ran was different than
what I am used to, but other than
that, it was pretty much the same
thing” Oster said. “I was coaching
Matt against high-level competition
like I have for the past three
Lockport’s Matt Ramos beat Kota Takahashi, of Japan, by fall at 2:40 in
the finals match to claim his international crown.
[to] four years. We had our same
pre-match routine and talks, just
like we would have done at any
other tournament.”
While Ramos returned home
Thursday, July 5, he said his coach
remained in Croatia, soaking up
sunshine on the beach, which was
the icing on the cake after watching
the Porter wrestler win on the
international stage.
“Watching Matt throughout
the tournament, he stuck to what
he was good at and didn’t try to
wrestle any differently than he usually
does,” Oster said from Croatia.
“He was able to put his opponents
into positions, he was comfortable
and it all worked out.”
To prepare for the world stage,
Ramos trained at the Olympic
Training Center in Colorado
Springs, Colorado. He said wrestling
with “the best of the best”
and having to adjust to the altitude
helped get his conditioning to
where it needed to be.
But when it came time to wrestle,
Ramos said he didn’t treat this
tournament any differently than a
Matt Ramos (right) won gold at 51 kilograms and LTHS coach Jameson
Oster (left) coached him during the Cadet World Championships in
Zagreb, Croatia. Photos submitted
typical high school meet.
“They’re obviously the best in
their country, but it’s not that different
[from high school],” Ramos
said. “... I didn’t want to overthink
the tournament, because
that’s when I start to overthink my
matches, and that’s when I would
probably lose. I just went out and
wrestled like a normal tournament,
and it felt like a normal high school
tournament to me.”
Despite being a world champion,
Ramos is already back focusing
on the local level. He is now turning
his attention to prepping for
his senior season with the Porters
and scouting colleges, but doing it
all with a renewed sense of confidence.
“It gives me a lot more confidence
just knowing that I’m the
best right now in my class in the
world, knowing that I can beat anyone
right now,” he said. “That’s my
mindset now. As long as I tell myself
that, if I wrestle my best and
give it my all, I can do anything.”

The classic Pat Benatar
song “Hit me with your best
shot” came out way before
CJ Weins was born. But the
recent Lockport Township
graduate, who is going on
to play baseball at Wabash
Valley College, had his own
version of that song this past
season for the Porters.
“Hit me with your best
pitch.”
That’s because Weins was
plunked by a pitch an amazing
25 times this spring.
While the Illinois High
School Association doesn’t
list any records for batters
being hit by a pitch in a season,
it’s safe to say Weins’
total this season would be
near the top of the list.
“I already looked for it,”
Weins said of searching for
the state record for hit by
pitches.
While Weins doesn’t
know if his mark of 25 hit
by pitches is a record, he still
takes pride in it.
“I led the team in getting
hit in each of my four years
at Lockport,” said Weins,
who was on the varsity the
last two seasons. “I crowd
the plate a lot and I’m not really
scared of the baseball.”
Although there is a rule in
place that says a batter can’t
get hit by a pitch on purpose,
Weins says he’s never got
called for it this season.
“No, I didn’t get called
for it this year,” Weins said.
“I’m a left-handed batter and
my elbow sticks out. The
pitchers don’t like it, but I’m
a pitcher myself, so I know
how to get in the pitchers
head a little bit. I get hit a
lot in travel ball [for the Illinois
Crush] too. I just tend
to crowd the plate.
“Just any way that I can
contribute. There’s been a
couple of bruises, but [getting
hit] is more of a pride
thing.”
Lockport coach Andy
Satunas says Weins’ hit by
pitch total is rather high, but
getting plunked by a pitch is
something the Porters do on
a regular basis.
“I’ve never seen someone
get hit 25 times in a season,”
Satunas said. “But we set
a goal to have more hit by
pitches as a team than games
played in a season. We like
to see our guys stay strong
in the box and take it [hit by
pitch].”
While Weins bats lefthanded,
he pitches righthanded.
Arm issues limited
him to nine appearances this
season, including six starts.
In 30 innings pitched he was
2-1 with a pair of saves. He
walked only eight, while
giving up 17 hits and striking
out a team-high 41 batters.
His ERA was a sparkling
0.93.
When he wasn’t pitching,
Weins was in the field. He
played some third base, but
mostly first. He batted .371
with an on-base percentage
of .543, while slugging .518.
Recent Lockport graduate CJ Weins will be continuing his baseball career at Wabash Valley
College. Photo submitted
He added 10 doubles, a triple,
a homer, 30 runs scored
and 21 RBI.
Weins got his start in baseball
when he was 6 years old
playing youth ball at the
First Church of the Nazarene
in Lemont. That’s led him to
where he is now and also to
where he is going. That is
the aforementioned Wabash
Valley College, a two-year
community college located
in Mount Carmel, Illinois.
“I’m very excited for CJ
to attend and play at a very
high level program like
that at Wabash Valley,” Satunas
said. “The junior college
route will allow him to
get lookted at by some D1
schools or to potentially be
drafted.”
That was a big factor for
Weins.
“I looked at a lot of different
routes,” he said. “I felt
like Wabash gave me the best
route for my goal. Playing in
junior college gives you the
option of getting drafted right
out of there or just getting
your grades up and going on
to a four-year school.
“One of the reasons I went
there was to pitch. If I pitch,
I don’t think they will let me
bat. Of course I’ll miss that.”
While Weins will miss
hitting, and getting hit by a
pitch, he will also miss playing
for the Porters. This past
spring he helped the team to
a 22-15 record, a first place
finish in the WJOL/Don
Ladas Memorial Baseball
Tournament, and a berth in
the regional title game.
“The camaraderie of the
team,” Weins said of what
he would miss the most. “We
had a good knowledge and
all knew how to play baseball.
It was a lot of fun.”
LISTEN UP
“It gives me a lot more confidence just knowing
that I’m the best right now in my class in the world,
knowing that I can beat anyone right now.”
