Summer inspiration on the menu
It’S hard to believe this is our summer issue after what seemed like the longest, rainiest spring in years.
But yes, summer is finally on its way.
there is often much inspiration in ordinary people’s lives that we often miss. Our cover story features one
of our very own, Juno award winning singer from woodbridge Dominic mancuso. his music is special and
is sure to strike an emotional cord.
In our Community section, we feature andrew mizzoni who survived a rare type of eye cancer as a child,
yet has bounced back and is a source of inspiration with his battle to make a difference in children’s lives.
So many couples are divorcing these days, but one aspect that is often ignored is children who find it hard
to cope. Dr. Kim arbus offers some suggestions in her article “Caught in the middle”.
meanwhile, if you are going to be a bride this summer, do have a look at mary Orlando’s tips for perfect
hair and makeup.
On a personal note, I’m especially looking forward to the summer. I am thrilled to announce my marriage to
nadia molisani in august. I look forward to a bright future with her. She has become my true partner in life.
enjoy the summer everyone, I know I will.
the Juno winner’s
YOU can call him the grand Innovator.
Or the Supreme Storyteller.
Certainly Dominic Mancuso, who did Vaughan proud with his Juno Award
success last year, is far more than a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist
and producer.
Mancuso, who won the 2010 Juno for World Music Album of the Year
and followed it up shortly after with the Canadian Folk Music Award for
World Solo Artist of the Year, is a multi-talented artist who continues
existed.
that one of his most popular innovations,
mancuso2 , may in time morph into an even
more unique upgrade.
mancuso2 (pronounced mancuso Squared) is a
stage performance that features himself and his
brother Vince, a talented artist, in a multimedia
duet of a novel kind. as Dominic’s distinctive
voice – described by critics as “impassioned”
and “energetic” – rings out with folkloric songs,
Vince’s digital brush paints furiously in sync on a
computer tablet, capturing the spirit of the song
through art that is projected on a huge screen to
an enraptured audience.
It is a sight-and-sound show quite unlike anything
else, something that has to be experienced to truly
grasp the energy generated by the performance. It
can be so intense that often the audience will quite
literally be on the edge of their seats as the “duet”
heads for a crescendo.
there is a possibility that in a year or two
’’
mancuso
2 may evolve into mancuso3 , with
actor/orator nick mancuso (no relation) joining
the show. “three different art forms, three
different individuals… it could be incredible.”
given how much Dominic mancuso has achieved
as a musician, it is astonishing that his career
came about by complete accident. Quite literally,
in fact. growing up, he was a self-confessed jock,
more interested in sports, until one day, life threw
him a curveball. he was riding his motorcycle
when a car ran through a stop sign and into him,
fracturing his vertebra and ending his teenage
dreams of a career in hockey.
the accident rendered him immobile and he had
to undergo rehabilitation for a whole year.
photo: venus.
“I was going crazy,” recalls mancuso, now 42.
“to keep my mind active, I thought I could learn
to play an instrument.”
his brother Vince, six years his senior, stepped
in to help, buying him a bass guitar off one of his
musician friends. It turned out that Dominic had a
natural gift for music that he wasn’t even aware
of. he was so good that after finishing grade
13, he began playing in rock bands, doing so for
several years.
his musical awakening took another direction in
1990 when his brother was getting married. Vince
asked Dominic if he would play a particular piece of
Sicilian folk music at his wedding, and of course he
cover story
agreed. the song Vince asked
for was Mi Vuotu, a traditional
Sicilian folk song originally
recorded by rosa Balistreri.
“that tapped into a side of me
that I didn’t know existed,”
says Dominic. “when I sang
it at the wedding, I said to
myself: ‘what a sound!’ In fact,
everyone was blown away.”
after that he was hooked, and
began building on a new, more
folksy repertoire, one that
would culminate in fame and
awards many years later.
In 1994, he enrolled in York
University’s music program
and switched to acoustic
guitar. while in his final year
of university, he met and fell
in love with fellow-student
(now his wife) tania Cologna,
who was a gifted musician
herself. ten months into their
relationship, tania won a bursary to study piano
in northern Italy. Dominic decided to join her
there, and spent several months touring the
area, packing his guitar and going to the local
piazza while she studied, “busking just for the
pleasure of busking”, as he puts it.
“I started to touch a chord with people. they
would invite me to perform in bars where I would
sing and play for strangers.”
the trip also wound up earning him invitations to
perform in theatre in austria as well as a show in
munich, germany.
the 10-month-long Italy trip was certainly one
that transformed him. Seeing how his music was
moving people, Dominic decided to focus on guitar
and lyrics, and being an artist true to his roots.
“my work is culturally based. It is not driven by
pop trends so it’s built for the long haul,” says
Dominic. “In the early days when artists like Joni
mitchell or Bruce Coburn were signed to record
contracts, they were five-year deals that allowed
the singers to develop. now it’s a business where
they just pump out artists.”
For Dominic’s own solo debut CD Calling Out,
released in 2000, he enlisted Vince as his
artistic director. It was while the brothers were
in the studio that the early concept of mancuso 2
was born.
“I said to Vince: ‘I want to perform with you at
concerts and I’m thinking of using an installation
dominic saw
the use of the
paintings not
just as props,
but as a way
of allowing
the audience
to connect to
where he was
coming from.
stage’,” recalls Dominic.
he saw the use of the paintings not just as props,
but as a way of allowing the audience to connect
to where he was coming from and to celebrate
the brothers’ collaboration.
From there the conversation led to them wondering
if Vince could himself be a “performer” on
stage, painting live to accompany the music. It
was a time when technology had begun to make
huge leaps forward and it was now possible to
paint digitally using a computer pen and tablet.
what if they could project this live art onto a big
screen as part of a grand musical canvas?
“If you feel confident that you can execute it, then
I feel confident I can draw in real time,” Vince
told Dominic.
they timed their first collaborative concert
for the turn of the millennium, a two-hour
performance that was held at Burton auditorium
in toronto.
“I orientated him with some of the lyrics just so
that some of the images could be a little more
powerful. at the same time we went against
the grain and did some things that were totally
unrelated, but it worked on a primal level. having
him attack the canvas with a 20-foot stroke that
is 3 feet wide creates an energy within itself,”
said Dominic.
his musical journey meanwhile continued and

in 2004, he composed and did the music
direction for the theatrical production Ciao
Baby. the same year, he produced and
played on the CD The Songwriters Series –
Volume 1.
Over the next few years, his body of work
started to fill out. among the most notable
were several concerts across Italy, scoring
the music for the television shows That’s
documentary DVD Canada’s Rugged Coastal
Line. there were also requests to score for
theatrical productions.
however, it was his next album that would
thrust him firmly in the national spotlight.
he teamed up with some of Canada’s
most dynamic jazz musicians, led by the
renowned michael Occhipinti, to form the
Sicilian Jazz Project. the group, hailed as
“a masterpiece of cultural fusion”, thrilled
critics and fans alike with their intriguing
mix of Sicilian folk source material
and the best elements of modern jazz,
world music, funk and blues. the group
embarked on a hugely successful tour of
major jazz festivals not just in Canada, but
in the US, mexico and Italy as well.
In 2009, the Sicilian Jazz Project CD –
which was part instrumental, part vocal –
earned a Juno nomination, “an historical
achievement for our Italian Canadian
people”, as mancuso put it.
many years had passed since his first
(and only) solo CD, and it took a sudden
realization for mancuso to speed up
work on his second, a collection of
traditional Italian folk songs he titled
Comfortably Mine.
“this was a homage to family, influenced
by my mother’s grave illness, and I didn’t
know how long we were going to have
her,” says mancuso, softly.
“I wanted to realize this body of work as
quickly as possible because I wanted her
to experience it, and…” his voice chokes
up before he finishes with a whisper, “she
was blown away.”
his mother was not the only one. So were
the critics as well as a legion of fans. So too,
were the Juno panel, who awarded him the
2010 prize in the world music category, the
first Italian language CD to have ever won a
Juno award. he also won the Canadian Folk
Vince, “he became his own man. ”
Comfortably Mine showcases
a global sound and Dominic’s
immense talent. the album
is evident of his ancestry; he
reinvents classic Italian songs
like Caruna and O Sole Mio by
breathing new life into them. he
is able to take a southern Italian
repertoire and infuse it with his
north american sensibility and
successfully merges old world
with new.
asked how he would describe his
own style, mancuso admits it is not something
that can be pigeon-holed into an established
genre of music.
“maybe something like Peter gabriel meets Sting
with a mediterranean sensibility, with a more
global fusion of culture,” he laughs.
mancuso says what he is trying to do is transcend
genres and borders, then underlines it at the
interview by singing a song called Salvatore which
begins with a hip hop groove, then combines
languages, before moving into the blues and even
a samba instrumental! Best of all, it works!
he describes himself as a sound painter,
someone who doesn’t limit his palette to just
three colours when he can access every colour
available. he draws upon everything that he feels
comfortable with to communicate through his
music, because “I love all kinds of music, I’m able
to draw upon all the genres.”
mancuso believes the timing of his Juno victory
was perfect for Canada to embrace ‘otherness’
(referring to multiculturalism), to step outside
of the traditional way of doing things and to
embrace a multicultural dynamic, an international
dynamic.
his Juno has made mancuso very much a man in
demand, with invitations raining down from every
part of the country. he does however have a very
special dream.
“my dream is to tour Sicily next year and bring
mancuso2 to the piazza in Delia, our little home
town where my parents were born. I made
Comfortably Mine for my parents, and this will help
bring things full circle.” W
Young Andrew heads out for the first dinner-dance after his family launched the Andrew Mizzoni
anDrew John mizzoni can recall the day like it
was yesterday.
he was just like any other nine-year-old boy,
enjoying school, happy to be with his family and
friends, playing lots of sports. Until one day, his
life changed forever.
“I still remember walking downstairs, and as I
walked into the kitchen where my parents were
having their breakfast, they suddenly said:
‘andrew, wait!’”
there was a bulge under his left eye which they
had never seen before.
“my mother began to feel under my eye and
noticed a definite difference between the two
eyes,” says mizzoni.
It was troubling enough that they decided to
seek medical assistance. they first visited a
local physician, but received no accurate diagnosis.
then, after several specialist appointments,
a receptionist at one doctor’s office
suggested that they take the boy to SickKids.
the parents wisely took her advice, and young
andrew was taken to the hospital for Sick
Children where he underwent a designated Ct
scan as well as various blood work.
“my parents and I then sat patiently in the 8th
floor waiting room pending the results. as time
stretched on, the waiting room cleared and my
parents and I were the only ones left there. I
played a game of cards with my father to pass
the time.”
Until finally, the doctor approached the doorway
with a grim look on his face. he sat down
and gave them the news: “andrew has cancer.”
his parents were heartbroken. their young son
was diagnosed with a very rare form of childhood
orbital cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma.
“the good thing about being diagnosed with
cancer as a child is that you don’t think anything
of it,” says mizzoni. “to quote Lance
in the community
armstrong, children have a higher cure
capacity as they ignore odds and percentages.
that is how I felt; I simply wanted to
get back to doing what I was doing prior to
my diagnosis.”
his oncologist, Dr. David malkin, wasted no
time. he was admitted that same night to
begin treatment. the initial protocol consisted
of nine months of chemotherapy and
five weeks of radiation.
“each chemotherapy session – conducted
over a three-night stay as an inpatient –
was very gruesome for me, but I never
complained,” recalls mizzoni.
“after my first chemotherapy session
my hair began to fall out rapidly. I even
remember displaying a trick on my friends
as I pulled a chunk of my hair out and it lay
in the palm of my hand. But that was no
problem for me as one of my idols at the
time was shaven-headed toronto raptors
superstar Vince Carter.”
after returning home from each session,
he would experience severe nausea on a
daily basis. In times of complete solitude,
he would ask “why me?”, feeling like he
was alone in his battle. he began to actually
feel more at home at SickKids, where
he was among many young children undergoing
the same treatments.
“For several years of my life SickKids
became my second home, and to this day I
feel the same way,” says mizzoni.
Finally, after an excruciating nine months
of chemotherapy followed by five weeks of
radiation at Princess margaret hospital, he
and his family received their most joyous
news yet: andrew was cancer free and in
26 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
remission. he looked forward to having
his hair grow back and getting to be an
average kid again.
But unfortunately this state of bliss
didn’t last long, as the cancer returned
once again, this time even more aggressive.
andrew was in a fight for his life as
he underwent a more extreme dosage
of chemotherapy. he underwent four
months of daily chemo, followed by an
additional four months of treatment and
several biopsies.
Finally, his medical staff was faced with
their toughest decision yet. they decided
to perform a radical surgical procedure to
remove the tumour along with his left eye.
‘‘ for several
years of my life,
SickKids hospital
became my
second home, and
to this day, i feel
the same way.
most people would have reacted to this
’’
with horror, but not mizzoni. “this was
great news for me as it meant the end
of a long battle,” he recalls.
this type of surgery had been conducted
only once in the history of SickKids
hospital, whose roots date back to 1875.
mizzoni’s surgery, conducted by world
renowned Dr. Jeffrey J. hurwitz, was a
success. two days later, he walked out
of hospital, hoping never to return.
mizzoni’s recovery was fuelled by his
passion for sports, and he was soon
playing basketball and competitive hockey.
But he now had a new focus in life
and that was to give back to the hospital
that saved his life.
that was how he and his family
launched the andrew mizzoni Cancer
research Fund in 2001, with their first
charity event, a dinner dance, held on
October 12 that year.
“we received such great support from our
community that we decided to carry on
the tradition. through the years we have
organized dinner dance galas and charity
golf classics, all with the focus of giving
back in mind,” says mizzoni.
his efforts have earned widespread recognition
and he has received countless
awards for his philanthropy.
“the have a heart for SickKids radiothon
featured my story on three of
toronto's top radio stations and set a
north american record for funds raised,”
recalls mizzoni.
he was also named Ontario Junior Citizen
of the Year in 2005 and was recognized
by Today's Parent magazine as one of the
top five individuals in the country who are
making a difference in the lives
of Canadian children.
to date, the andrew mizzoni
Cancer research Fund has
raised over $400,000 for pediatric
cancer research at SickKids
hospital. this year marks the
10th anniversary of the family’s
fundraising efforts, with
the andrew mizzoni Charity golf
Classic to be held on June 21 at
Cardinal golf Club.
Last summer, mizzoni added
another prestigious accomplishment
to his long list. at the age
of 18, he received his real estate
license, making him one of the
youngest worldwide to do so. he
is currently thriving as a sales
representative with homelife
metropark realty, and has intertwined his
real estate career with his charity efforts
to support SickKids hospital. he dedicates
a percentage of his commissions to support
cancer research at the hospital for
Sick Children. “my motto of ‘every Deal
makes a Difference’ is one I plan to live
up to, and becoming an inspiration to the
world is a passion I have set out to fulfill,”
says mizzoni.
to date, mizzoni has been cancer free for
over eight years. “Looking back, I would
not have it any other way,” he says.
“Cancer has bettered me as a person and
by beating cancer I now feel indestructible,
because my life’s toughest battle will
eternally be behind me. Cancer will forever
be the worst thing to happen to me,
and the best thing!” W
Selba puts
the green
into kitchen
cabinets
a VaUghan kitchen cabinet manufacturer
has set an environmental benchmark,
becoming one of the first in north
america to completely jettison oil and
solvent-based paints in its operations.
Selba Industries Inc., which has a
stated commitment to the environment,
underlined this resolve by completing
their shift to a 100% water-based
painting process.
One of the leading manufacturers of
quality cabinetry in the gta, Selba began
research and development into this green
shift as far back as 2008. the new process
has helped the company reduce their VOC
emissions (greenhouse gases) by almost
99% in their staining operations alone,
and it no longer uses any formaldehydes
in any finishes or the finishing process.
Overall, Selba’s entire painting operations
have experienced a 50-fold reduction
of VOCs, while the manufacturing
process in general has become far more
environmentally sustainable.
“not only do changes like these help
positively impact the environment outside,
but they make a home’s living environment
safer too,” said a Selba spokesman.
“By removing dangerous elements like
toluene, benzene and xylene from our
products, we have eliminated the threeto
six-month ‘curing’ period that was
required for oil-based paints.”
the company says the new process also
means safer and quicker installations for
customers, and a safer work environment
for their employees, who no longer
require masks in the workplace.
“Our commitment to the environment
is not just to differentiate us from our
competitors. It’s also meant to be a
challenge for other companies to take
similar steps to ensure a cleaner and
safer future for many generations to
come,” the company said in a statement.
Home & Garden
Better
Finding it hard to organize
your garden? Designer
Glen Peloso provides
his simple
Backyard
rules for a…
the sun is finally shining
on a regular basis and we
couldn’t be happier. as
happens every year at this
time, people rush from the
indoors (where we feel like we have been
forever!) to the glory of the outdoors and
the warm weather.
the fantastic thing is that the outdoor
works as an extension of the indoors and
while we sometimes find it difficult to get
the outdoors set up, the very same rules
for organizing your space apply outdoors
as they do indoors, simply because they
are based on human dimensions.
You are going to want to divide the
outdoor space that you have into areas
that make sense for the size you are
dealing with. I always think it is best
to have the dining space closest to the
house. Further back, you can place the
living area or lounge area; with the den or
reading area for one or two people placed
farthest back into the garden.
the next effort becomes determining
what size of furniture to buy so that it is
appropriate to the yard or deck. On the
deck, if it is raised from the yard you have
Furniture..www.lowes.ca
home & garden
to assume that it is also a passage from the house
to the yard. You want to have a minimum of 30” to
36” of walking space to allow you easy access to the
yard. that space can be on either side of the table
and chairs. the remaining space can be used for the
outdoor dining room.
You may want to have a table for eight people;
however if you don’t have the space it is going to be
more of a problem than an asset. the space required
for each person is 24” side by side and you need to
have about 20” inches from the table for the chairs.
Based on the space you have you can determine the
size of table that will fit in your space.
there are also lots of carpets that are suitable for
the outdoors available at various big box stores and
specialty stores. You want to have a carpet that is
24” larger than the table to make sure that people
sitting at the table are still on the carpet when they
are sitting at the table. these dimensions are based
on the average size of a human body: the average
length of legs from the knee to the hip bone in this
application.
In the lounge part of the yard, determine how
much furniture and how much space you want to
consume. You can do that just by using some string
to make a square or rectangle on the lawn. You
want to select a sofa that is two-thirds the size of
the longest (implied) wall, based on the length of the
string you are using. You can determine chairs or
love seats that are appropriate to the sofa size. the
farthest you want to have a seat away from another
seat is eight feet. that is the approximate distance
that the human voice will carry comfortably without
having to be raised. this of course is true for most
people… though coming from an Italian background,
40 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
Planning
outdoor
spaces
means
following
the same
rules as
for indoors.
I think I would be more comfortable with ten feet
based on how loud some of my group can be!
generally speaking though, eight feet is the right
distance. It is also a reasonable distance for people
to be able to clearly see the faces of those they are
conversing with.
You will want to have a coffee table or something
for people to be able to place drinks on. You need
to determine the size of the coffee table based
on distance it will be from the seating. that table
should be 18” to 20” from the front of the sofa or
love seat. this distance allows
people to walk forward along the
sofa or love seat without hitting
either the table or the sofa. If it gets
much farther away than that, it will
be uncomfortable for the people
sitting on the furniture to reach the
table to place drinks or to be able
to enjoy the nibbles that you have
placed out for them.
this dimension is based on the
average width of a person’s legs
and the average length of a human
arm reaching forward. Of course
when it comes to me, I will reach
very far if the table happens to be
holding a good glass of wine. heck
– I’ll even stand up to get to that,
but that is not appropriate for most
people, particularly if they are a little
older and you want them to have a
comfortable evening at your home.
with the occasional chairs, you may
want to have a small table between them so that
those people have easy access to a table and you
don’t need to have an exceptionally large coffee table.
If you happen to have fencing around the yard and
you would like to have some “art” or sculptures
hanging on the fencing, you want to make sure
that they hang in relation to the items under them.
the general rule of thumb is that the centre of the
image should be 60” from the ground. the same
rules apply in the house.
there are obviously many rules and also some
exceptions. In the house I always think it is best to
hire a design company. Certainly for our studio we
have become very clear that if people think it is
expensive to hire a professional, they learn that it
costs much more in the long run to hire an amateur.
If you need some help, don’t hesitate to call and we
will be happy to help you out and make it follow all
the rules! enjoy the sun! W
the perfect
people
tended to
plant only
annuals
into their
containers,
but today,
anything
goes.
by Karl Kohnen
YOU never get a second chance to make a first impression.
an old cliché, yes, but one that can be applied to many
things, including that wonderful planter you may have at
the front of your home that welcomes your friends and
guests inside.
there are four important factors that go into creating
the perfect planter: the
container itself, the type of
soil that is used, the plants
and decorative accessories,
and the after-care.
One of the most difficult
things to choose is actually
the container itself. It
should accentuate and
reflect the style of your
home, and perhaps even
a bit of your personality. a
simple black urn tends to
say “safe”, “conservative”,
and sometimes even
“unimaginative”. In the
right setting, it could also
say “classic”, “elegant”, and
“regal”. the old-fashioned
half-barrel planter, on the
other hand, says “rural”,
“cottage” and in some
cases “shabby-chic“.
the materials from which
the containers are made
all have their advantages
and disadvantages. Cast
iron will last for years, but
can be extremely heavy
to move, and will need
repainting once it begins
to rust. If it is a black urn that does not hold a lot of soil, it
could also heat up quickly in the full sun and dry out faster
and stress out the plants. One advantage though, is that
you can change the colour should you get bored with black.
Concrete planters, like cast iron, are heavy, strong and
will last for many years, but can sometimes crack if they
are not properly sealed with a protective coating on the
inside. (any moisture in the concrete will expand with
freezing and cause cracking).
Fibreglass, and the newer Fibrestone planters have an
advantage over both cast iron and concrete. they are
durable, come in all shapes and sizes, and above all are
fairly lightweight and easier to move.
the foundation of container success is both drainage and
water retention. Drainage can be as easy as making sure
that the container has a few holes in the bottom and a
layer of pebbles or broken clay shards.
Soil straight from the garden is not the wisest choice for
home & garden
a container, as it is often too dense,
lacks natural porosity and can easily
get waterlogged. also, avoid really
inexpensive bagged soils. an excellent
quality potting soil will contain a perfect
mix of peat moss (for water absorption),
compost (for moisture retention and
root health), perlite and/ or vermiculite
for added drainage and porosity, and a
bit of fertilizer to help the plants get off
to a good start.
Plants should be selected according
to light, water and exposure
requirements. It is difficult to arrange
high water needs plants with drought
needy plants in the same container,
as one will be either too wet or too
dry, and failure is only a matter of
time. Light levels are divided into
three categories; full sun, part sun
and shade. Full sun generally means
at least six hours of strong day sun,
i.e. from 10 am to 4 pm. Shade plants
are those that are out of the direct sun
from about 9 am to 5 pm. Part sun
simply means some sun and some
shade throughout the day.
only annuals into their containers, but
today, anything goes. Often you will see
bold perennials mixed together with
annuals to give an interesting texture
and colour effect. Perennials are often
added to give texture (remember that
most perennials will only flower for
a short time) and interest, whereas
annuals provide most of the colour
throughout the summer season.
grasses, interesting branches,
flowering annual vines supported on
obelisks add an incredible element
of height to a container, whereas ivy,
trailing alyssum, bacopa, verbena, and
sweet potato vines give an excellent
element of downward flow. taller
containers tend to look great with a few
tendrils flowing over the sides, while
shorter pots and planters look better
with plant combinations that are more
upright than flowing.
when choosing your plants, remember
that bright colours such as reds,
yellows, blues and purples show up
best in the sun, and the whites, pinks
and lighter colours tend to look better
in the shade… especially at night when
the moon is shining. Solid colours
can look especially bold and classic,
whereas multicoloured arrangements
are more fun and casual.
there are four elements to caring for
your planter: watering, fertilizing, dead
heading, and pruning.
Fertilizing can be done in two ways
– either incorporating slow release
fertilizers mixed into the soil for a
slow all season feed, or by using a
water-soluble fertilizer. the biggest
advantage of the latter is that the plant
is getting food at the same time that
it is being watered. You should never
fertilize a completely dried out planter,
as the roots could burn. Fertilizing
should be started as you see new
growth appear. as the plant grows, it
needs more food. If the plants begin to
look a little yellowish closest to the soil,
it is a sure indication that the plant needs
more food. this is often seen with heavy
feeders such as petunias and geraniums.
a well-balanced fertilizer such as a
10-10-10, or 20-20-20 at a minimum of
once a week is a good choice.
watering is sometimes a trick in
itself. too much and the roots rot;
not enough and the plants wither. You
really have to observe your container
to see when it needs it. If the leaves
lose their ‘sheen” or plumpness, it
is time to water. In cold weather,
leaves sometimes show these signs,
so check the soil first and see if it is
still moist. watering should be done in
the mornings so that the plants have
a chance to perk up and face the day.
evenings are not always the best, as
wet leaves overnight can invite fungal
infection and cause rot to begin.
as the container grows, and you feel
that some plants are getting too big or
straggly, you can prune them back to
get them back in shape. Spent flowers
should be removed to prevent seed
formation, which takes away future
flowering vigour.
with a little bit of work, and tender,
loving care, your container will reward
you with an abundance of colour,
texture and beauty all season long. W
this summer, get adventurous with your garden! herbs are not only easy
to grow and enhance visual appeal, they bring a special flavour to life.
by Lynda Taneda
there is nothing more rewarding,
after a harsh Canadian winter, than to
get on our hands and knees, and get
downright dirty in our backyard; all for
the sake of gardening of course!
But this summer, instead of planting
the routine batch of crops, spice up
your garden with an array of herbs!
herbs don’t need much space; they
get by with little care, and flourish just
about anywhere.
herbs are essentially plants of the wild.
they grow in any soil condition, and
most thrive in full sun.
If space is an issue, keep in mind that
savoury herbs such as dill, marjoram,
basil, parsley, sage and oregano can be
grown successfully in pots, windowsill
boxes, and even indoors.
from the Ground Up. Plants
that have creeping root systems, such
as bergamot and mint, are easy to
propagate. Simply cut a section of
the root and replant it. But be careful
with herbs such as horseradish
and ginger as they have fleshy roots.
these plants need to be uprooted, the
roots need to be separated
with a sharp knife, then
Lavender, lemon
verbena, thyme,
sage, French
tarragon and
rosemary, to
name a few,
can easily be
grown by cutting
a small
branch below
the node – where
the leaf joins the
stem. Lower leaves
need to be removed, and
the cutting planted in a pot with moist
potting compost. the cutting should be
add some
spice
to your outdoors
upturned glass jar,
and kept out of direct
sunlight until it begins
to grow.
the simplest way to grow herbs that
do not have spreading roots, such as
winter savoury and hyssop, is to simply
snip off a branch from the main plant
and peg it firmly in damp soil.
limitless choices. Okay… so
you now have an array of fresh herbs.
Simply snip off the heads from marigolds
(calendula) and toss the petals in
a salad. not only will they enhance the
home & garden
visual appeal, they will add an unusual
sweetish taste that will please most
palates.
If marigolds are not your cup of tea
(and yes, you can make a cleansing
tea from dried marigolds – simply add
1 tbsp. dried flowers to 2 cups boiling
water, steep for 10 minutes and drink
warm), try adding chive or borage flowers,
bergamot or mint leaves instead.
But choose a light dressing so as not to
overpower the herb’s delicate flavour.
and why not add fresh sliced ginger
root in stir-fries and curry dishes, or
fresh fennel leaves to poultry or fish,
or alongside fresh cheese to enhance
its flavour? next time you make a beef
stew, simply drop in four of five fresh
thyme leaves, and ¼ cup chopped basil
to enhance flavour.
to flavour your favourite oil, add
sprigs of chosen herbs such as rosemary,
cinnamon or peppermint. Seal
the bottle and let stand for at least 24
hours so that the oils of the herbs are
PAIN
STOPS
thoroughly released.
If you want to wow your hostess next
time you are invited for a summer barbecue,
simply add bruised rose petals,
a sprig or two of thyme, and a couple of
sage leaves to a jar of warmed honey.
not only will the honey develop a
unique flavourful taste, but this simple
gift will become the talk of the table,
especially if you tie a colourful ribbon
around the lid.
But herbs are not only restricted for
use in the kitchen. after a stressful day,
nothing rejuvenates the spirit and the
body like a warm bath. add a handful of
chamomile blossoms, jasmine and lime
flowers tied in a nylon anklet to prevent
the leaves from escaping, and drop it in
the bathwater. relax for 20 minutes.
If you suffer from insomnia or nervous
tension, steep 2 oz of balm leaves in 1
qt boiling water for 20 minutes. add to
bathwater and soak for half hour.
For an extra boost of stamina, add
rosemary, basil, peppermint and lemon
2. eliminate the
expired. gather all your
medication, vitamins and
over-the counter drugs in a
bin. while listening to music
or relaxing in front of the tV,
begin looking at each item’s
expiry date. toss the outdated
items into a bag and take
them to the drug store for
safe disposal. Store current
medications in a cool, dark
place out of children’s reach.
3. toss the toiletries.
Just before brushing your
teeth every night or jumping
in the shower in the morning,
spend just five minutes
getting rid of bath, skin
and hair products that
didn’t live up to their promises.
By the end of the week,
you’ll have more storage
space in your bathroom and
easier access to the items
you use regularly.
4. eliminate Under-
Used Utensils. while
waiting for water to boil
or the oven to preheat, go
through your utensil drawer
and eliminate items you
don’t use. go through your
kitchen ‘junk drawer’ and
see what treasures you’ve
forgotten about and what
trash you can remove.
home & garden
5. clear the counters. remove anything
you don’t use daily from your kitchen
counters. Put out an attractive bowl or
basket as a catch-all for items that usually
end up cluttering the counters. when the
container is full, spend a few minutes going
through it and either purge items or place
them where they belong.
6. Move it elsewhere. each time you
leave a room, get into the habit of scanning
it to see which items don’t belong in
the space. If any of those items go in the
room you are heading towards, take them
with you. If something belongs upstairs,
place it in a wicker basket you can keep at
the bottom of the stairs and take it to the
proper room next time you go up.
7. Get the family in Gear. make
a game out of de-cluttering by getting the
whole family involved. give everyone a box,
put on some upbeat music, set a timer and
see who can discard the most items from
their room. take the donations to charity
and then choose a token prize for the winner
and a reward for the entire family.
Organizing doesn’t have to be an all-ornothing
event. taking small steps consistently
will keep clutter under control. W
54 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
the day 12-year-old Joanie learned that her
parents were going to be getting a divorce, she
became overwhelmed with sadness. She went
to school and cried all day. She came home
that night and locked herself in her room, listening to
her music and refusing to talk to anyone.
when six-year-old Jonathan’s parents told him
they were separating, he seemed to have very little
reaction and his parents thought he was fine. a few
weeks later they began receiving calls from the
school saying he was acting out and had
hit a few children in the playground.
michael, 16, learned of his
parents’ divorce by accident
when he happened to overhear
a conversation they were
having on the phone. he did
not tell his parents he had
heard them and went to stay
at his friends for the night.
when he returned home,
his parents could tell he
had been drinking, but he
wouldn’t talk to them.
It was a very different
reaction for Jennifer, 14. when
she and her 16-year-old sister
heard their parents were divorcing,
their first emotion was utter relief.
their parents’ fighting had become
so bad that the girls would hide in
terror in their rooms, sometimes
for hours at a time, until it
stopped.
the middle
how their children will cope. dr Kim arbus offers tips.
a StranGe new world. with approximately 40% of marriages in
Canada ending in divorce, parents need to be armed with information to help not
just themselves but also their children navigate their new situation.
Parents may (or may not) be surprised to hear that the first two years following
a divorce are reportedly the most difficult for children. easing the burden on
kids starts with being aware and mindful of the child’s developmental stage
of maturity, gender differences, personality, emotional functioning and selfconfidence,
in addition to a host of other individual factors.
most importantly, the way in which parents handle their family situation
leading up to and during the process of the divorce will ultimately have
the most impact on their children. Jennifer and marie’s parents battled
with each other until the day their Dad left the family home. after he
moved out, the parents seemed to be able to talk more and fight less
when they met, especially around the girls. this helped them feel calm
and safe and feel they were going to be okay in the long run. She knew
that even though her parents would normally fight about everything,
they were actively working on getting along better.
most parents are aware that there is some impact on their children
when they separate or divorce. however many of them may not realize
the true nature of the difficulties that can arise for their kids. Children,
like adults, experience a range of emotions. these emotions can become
unmanageable when life as they have known it is about to change.
theSe changes can shake the foundation of safety and security that
children may have previously felt. Kids can be at increased risk for
a variety of mental health concerns and may not adequately know
how to cope with their new life situation. ensuring that children
are offered help is vital to their emotional survival. allowing
children permission to talk when they need to is important for
their recovery from their parents’ separation or divorce. Providing
a safe and trusting environment where they can disclose difficult
feelings about both parents and the challenges they are facing as a
result of their new life situation is important. this can be done within
the family, with a good friend or with a professional.
michael began using alcohol to help him cope with his parents’
divorce. he did not have any friends in a situation similar to his, and
had very few people he felt he could talk to. his parents presumed that
because he was 16, he would be able to handle their separation better
and that he did not require any help. michael’s alcohol use began to
worsen as, unfortunately, he did not have the outlet he required to help
him get through this very difficult time in his life. It was only much later,
whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011 55

when michael finally began therapy, that he started opening
up about his parents’ divorce and recognized that he was
using alcohol to escape from his worries.
there is a great deal of information available on the web
and in books that divorcing parents can access for their
children to help them cope. Books written for kids can be
found at the local library or online through magination press
(see http://tinyurl.com/6gggmdy for a selection). Information
for families can be found online through the american
Psychological association (www.apa.org) and the Canadian
mental health association website (www.ontario.cmha.ca),
in addition to many other websites and books. the difficulty
is that many parents don’t have the time to search online
or read through books, as they likely feel overwhelmed
themselves.
as a quick and helpful guide, I have compiled
a few tips for families coping with a typical
separation or divorce situation. In extreme
cases, including abusive and other high conflict
divorces you will need to seek more specific
assistance.
1.don’t fight in front of the kids.
we are all aware that fighting in front of
the children is not a good idea. Incredibly,
despite knowing this, parents consistently do
serious battle in front of the kids. this can be
incredibly scary and at times damaging for
children to bear witness to. the bottom line is
that when parents don’t know how to manage
their anger, children suffer emotionally.
Jonathan, for example, was six years old when
his parents decided to divorce and he seemed
to be fine at first. however, when he started
becoming more physically aggressive with
his peers at school, his parents knew that
something was bothering him. Jonathan’s
parents would often scream, swear and
slam doors in front of him. Unfortunately, he
learned from his role models that acting out anger
was how to cope with difficult feelings.
2. don’t discuss the divorce with kids
around. It is important that all parental conflict and
discussions about legal matters in the divorce be kept
completely away from the children. Parents need to find
support outside of the home and talk with friends or family
in a location where their children cannot hear details of
what is going on in the marital relationship.
It is only human for children to be curious about what is
happening with their parents. Children can and will go to
great lengths to find out information about their parents as
they may believe it is vital information for their adjustment,
safety and security. Parents must try their best to talk in
discreet locations and the less talk in the home the better.
3. don’t criticize the other parent when
talking to children. It is important that parents don’t
talk to children about the other parent in a negative way. It’s
56 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
children should
be encouraged
to share their
thoughts and
fears about their
parents’ divorce.
What they really
want to know is
that their parents
still love them.
not just that kids don’t want to hear it, they literally can’t
process it. Children need both parents, they need to know
their parents are mostly good but most of all, that their
parents love them despite how they feel about each other.
If parents can figure out how to talk openly and calmly with
each other, children will benefit. Often, children only see
parents angry and yelling at each other. when children are
shown how to discuss their problems, even when problems
don’t always come with easy solutions, they benefit in
unimaginable ways. hearing parents demonstrate good
communication teaches children problem-solving skills and
provides a model for them on how to use words – rather
than anger or aggression – to solve complex issues.
4. Minimize disruptions to a child’s daily
routine. maintaining the existing routine
helps children feel a little more secure.
although sometimes challenging, it is
important that children’s lives be disrupted as
minimally as possible. Keeping kids near their
social supports, friends, family, and in the
same school and programs would be ideal.
Of course, this is not always possible and
parents sometime have to be creative in
keeping children on a routine. even if it is
impossible to keep external factors the same,
it is helpful when parents can agree that home
routines should stay as stable as possible. this
includes parents agreeing to similar morning
schedules for wake-up times, dressing and
bathing, breakfast, and maintaining consistency
with after-school and bedtime routines.
Sometimes parents feel guilty and may allow
children to stay up later than usual or watch
movies they might not normally be allowed
to see. although this seems like a good idea
at the time, it only serves to undermine kids’
sense of stability. remember, children require
limits to feel safe, adjusting limitations due to
your own guilty feelings can negatively affect your child.
5. Be honest with your kids. Children may have
a lot of questions for their parents about what is happening
to their family. Parents should try to be as honest as
possible, keeping in mind their child’s developmental stage
and age. Children should be encouraged to share their
thoughts, feelings and worries about their parents’ divorce.
what kids really want to know is that both of their parents
still love them and that this will never change.
when Joanie’s parents sat down with her to explain why
they were separating, they were very tight-lipped. this
unfortunately caused fears in Joanie’s mind that she was
somehow responsible. She concluded that all of their
fighting had been about her so she must be the reason for
their divorce. after some time in therapy, Joanie was able to
discuss her fears and feelings about being a ‘bad’ daughter.
after meeting with her parents and discussing Joanie’s fears,
they were better able to reassure her that their divorce was
no fault of hers. talking in as honest a way as possible with
family matters
children helps dispel fears that they may
have had a role in their parents’ divorce.
6. Get professional help if
needed. If you suspect that your child
is not coping well with a separation
or divorce, it is important that you get
help immediately. Children can very
quickly experience adjustment problems
as a result of all of the changes they
go through following a divorce. a new
home, new neighbours, less time with
both parents, changes in lifestyle,
finances, school, in addition to a host of
other changes can cause children great
emotional distress.
If parents notice a difference in a child’s
behaviour – such as crying more often,
more angry than usual, more explosive
than normal, or even more withdrawn
or quiet than usual, it is important to
seek help. Other signs to look for include
children spending more time in their
room, excessive time on the phone or
internet, staying away from their homes
or avoiding family or friends. any changes
to sleeping or eating patterns are quite
58 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
significant and should be examined by a
healthcare practitioner.
Children need help from their parents to
support them when they inevitably face
the sadness, hurt, anxiety and anger that
will most likely develop as a result of this
significant change in their life. If managed
adequately, they can learn to cope with
these feelings and go on to lead very
successful lives. If they are not provided
with the proper supports, children can
feel very alone and many suffer in silence.
alternatively, some children can become
more explosive and angry and they might
suddenly find themselves in trouble
that they may never have previously
experienced.
If parents notice any of these symptoms
or have any concerns about their child’s
emotional or behavioural functioning, they
can start by talking to their family doctor.
although the names have been changed
for confidentiality purposes, all four of
the children mentioned in this article
came to see a clinical psychologist for
help in dealing with their parents’ divorce.
Psychologists are trained specifically
to help with emotional and behavioural
difficulties. they may see children alone,
or the whole family together to provide
the best help for the child. Psychologists
can provide an environment where a child
can express any emotion or thought they
are having without fear of offending a
parent, feeling guilty, or getting in trouble.
working together with families, a
psychologist’s role is to assist a child in
processing what is happening for them,
coping with all that they are feeling, and
ensuring that they are able to move
forward in a healthy manner where they
can go on to experience a successful life.
It is important to note that children, like
adults can experience clinical levels of
depression, anxiety as well as other
psychological disorders. If you suspect
your child may be experiencing any
symptoms of concern, talk to your doctor
or call a psychologist. You can find one
through the College of Psychologists of
Ontario (www.cpo.on.ca). W
eVen if you have perfect skin and never wear any
makeup, your wedding day is the one time you simply
must break that rule. Your skin should look as perfect
as possible. For most of us, that means wearing more
makeup than usual. here are five variables that will
influence/affect the amount of makeup you wear:
1. the condition of your skin. Clear, healthy
skin not only requires less makeup but also holds the
makeup longer. Your skin changes according to the
weather, environment, diet, stress, age and hormones.
here are some good skin care habits to maintain:
A classic updo is paired with
classic makeup to coordinate
with the traditional gown.
Neutral makeup colours
were used to create this
timeless look.
Never go to bed with makeup on. It can clog your
pores and slow down your skin’s natural regeneration
process.
Choose mild cleansers. You don’t have to strip
away every bit of oil to be clean. Scouring yourself
causes irritation and slickness. when you strip your
natural oils, your skin produces extra to compensate...
it’s a vicious cycle.
Maintain a hands-off policy. You may be anxiously
touching your face, which could make breakouts
worse. any picking can lead to scarring. If you
experience a severe blemish just before your big
day, call your dermatologist for a quick-fix
remedy like a cortisone shot.
Stay loyal to your skin care products.
Changing brands constantly is taxing on skin.
Products are designed to work together and
have cumulative benefits. Since your skin
changes over time, you should slowly introduce
products to meet your skin’s evolving needs.
the best products in the world will do nothing
for you if they are not appropriate for your
skin. If you’ve been using the same day/night
cream for over two years, it’s time to consider
a professional skin consultation/analysis. most
spas offer a complimentary skin analysis using
a skin scanner machine. a skin scan provides
an in-depth analysis which reveals what’s
going on underneath your skin. You can actu-
ally see areas of dehydration, sun damage,
future breakouts etc. If, for example, your scan
reveals white areas on the sides of your mouth,
it could indicate dehydration. make sure you
don’t forget those areas when moisturizing.
Exercise. working out will increase circulation
and help shake off stressful energy.
get a good night’s sleep. Your skin is busy
repairing and rebuilding itself while you sleep.
all that work consumes 40% of your skin’s
moisture, making night cream an absolute
necessity. If your body is sleep deprived, it produces
more stress hormones that damage skin
and speed up the aging process.
Use a gentle approach. the single most important
beauty ritual besides rest is the facial. go
easy on aggressive chemical facial peels – they
can cause inflammation. Peels, or damagereverser
type facials should be performed
months prior to your wedding. Instead, try
facials like the latest 24K gold Facial or the
Put on a happy Face. a positive attitude is important
for general health, including your skin.
2. Your desired look. Soft and natural or
strong and dramatic? Your makeup should coordinate
with your gown, hairstyle and overall
wedding theme. a soft-flowing chiffon gown
requires soft-flowing hair and blended, more
natural-looking makeup. a more structured
couture gown needs some makeup and hair
drama. It’s all about balance. If you pair an
au naturel makeup/hair look with a dramatic
gown, the gown will overpower you!
3. the time of your wedding. Choose your
makeup depending on the time of the wedding
because different light sources (daylight or
artificial lighting) emit different coloured rays.
Keep daytime makeup softer and more blended.
Brighter, whiter, natural daylight is less forgiving.
Incandescent lighting or candlelight for
evening weddings requires a more defined and
dramatic makeup. Use bolder colours and add
some shimmer dust for interest.
4. the weather. It can be difficult to predict
what the weather will be like from the start of
the event to the end, so be prepared – carry
some translucent powder, lipstick and blush
for touch-ups. wearing today’s new high-tech
mineral foundations on your wedding day will
ensure your makeup stays put no matter what
the weather. they are clinically engineered
to multi-task as a foundation and sunscreen.
micronized minerals act as a chemical-free sunblock,
naturally shielding skin against UV light.
5. the type of photography. not all makeup
looks great across colour, black & white and
sepia photographs. Speak to a professional
makeup artist about the type of photography you
will be having so they can work accordingly.
eatIng sugary snacks makes kids hyper. Starve a fever and
But are they based on scientific evidence or are they just old
In his new book 25 Ways To Cure The Hiccups: Uncovering The
Truth Behind 101 Common Myths And Misconceptions, wisconsin
professor Brian Udermann does a marvellous job of putting
commonly held beliefs under the scanner to examine if they do
indeed stand up to deeper scrutiny.
Udermann, who has an undergraduate degree in sports medicine and a masters and PhD
in exercise Physiology, combines personal anecdotes with published research on each
topic to deliver a thoroughly enjoyable – and educational – read. each subject is presented
in bite-sized pieces that make it easy to open the book at pretty much any page and get
1. reading in low light damages vision. It simply
isn’t true. It also isn’t true that sitting too close to the tV will
damage your vision. reading in low light or sitting too close
to the tV can cause eyestrain, which may lead to your eyes
becoming red and irritated, but these activities will not damage
vision, and the eyestrain will usually correct itself in 20 to 30
minutes if you stop reading or watching tV.
Verdict: MYth
2. Spicy foods cause heartburn. It is commonly
believed that eating spicy foods like jalapenos and chili peppers
causes heartburn, not necessarily true. Smoking, alcohol, eating
beyond the point of being full, certain medications, and sleeping
in certain positions are much more likely to cause heartburn.
Verdict: MYth
3. frozen fruit and veggies are often as
nutritious as fresh ones. many people have the
misconception that frozen fruits and veggies are not as nutritious
as fresh. not true. what many people consider to be “fresh”
produce has actually travelled hundreds or even thousands
of miles to get to their grocery store and has likely sat in
storerooms and on grocery store shelves for a number of days
or weeks. Frozen fruits and veggies are often frozen soon after
being harvested, thus locking in most of the produce’s nutrients.
Verdict: fact
4. individuals who multitask are more
productive. research might tell us otherwise. turns out
that when we try to do two things at once (e.g. reading your
physics textbook and updating your Facebook profile) we are less
productive than if we would do each task individually.
Verdict: MYth
5. chocolate is good for you. are you a chocolate
lover? Do you sometimes feel guilty after indulging yourself?
well, researchers are now telling us that chocolate has many
66 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
positive health benefits. Some of those benefits include
reducing our risk for heart attacks, strokes, and even cancer.
Cocoa and chocolate contain compounds called flavonoids,
which have strong antioxidant properties and help improve
health. Chocolate does contain a fair number of calories, so
eat it in moderation, just one to two ounces a day should do.
Verdict: fact
6. when you stop exercising muscle often
turns to fat. the truth is that fat and muscle are two
separate tissues and one never turns into the other.
Verdict: MYth
7. a cut will heal faster if you uncover it at
night. we have all had our share of scrapes over the years
and most of us have been told by our parents to take a bandage
off our wounds when we go to bed to let them “air out” or
“breathe”. turns out that keeping your cuts and scrapes
covered will actually increase healing rates, usually two to
four days faster! wounds that go uncovered and dry out tend
to form hard scabs, which will slow healing. Keeping a wound
covered and moist will promote new cell growth and healing.
Verdict: MYth
8. Morning workouts elevate your metabolism
more than evening workouts. If you set your alarm
clock for 5:00 a.m. to get your daily workout in thinking it will
result in you burning more calories throughout the day, feel free
to hit the snooze button and stay in bed. Burning 500 calories
from a workout at 5:00 a.m. is exactly the same as burning
500 calories from a workout at 5:00 pm. So, if you prefer
exercising in the evening, feel free to stick with that routine!
Sleeping
on the job
can add
pep to
your day!
… and other simple tips to help avoid the mid-day slump
by Dr. Natasha Turner
haVe you ever been caught grabbing a
bit of shut-eye at your desk? what was
your excuse?
new sleep research may be your best
answer. a study from harvard University
considered worker burnout over four
days of training and the effect of napping.
as the four days of training wore on, the
workers began to experience burnout.
But here's the good news: the study found
that workers who were allowed to take a
30-minute nap on the second day of the
session experienced less decline in visual
tasks. a one-hour nap was actually found
to return performance back to normal in
the last two sessions.
that is not to say that curling up for an
hour or so at the office should be sanctioned,
but keeping it to less than 30
minutes might not be so far-fetched. It
seems that half-hour naps should not
only be recognized as acceptable by
companies, it’s actually beneficial. this
is old news to many european countries
where afternoon siestas are standard
practice and many shops close for an
hour or so each afternoon.
afternoon drowsiness is a major problem
68 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
for many corporations – it is estimated
that lost productivity costs billions. a possible
solution is to allow 20 to 30 minutes
of napping per day when it is deemed necessary,
creating a work environment that
may help to boost workplace productivity
rather than hinder it. In today’s fast-paced
society and tough economy, however,
most companies frown on napping in the
workplace rather than encourage it.
Can’t squeeze in a nap? Use these tips to
boost your energy and productivity during
the day:
1. take a good quality multivitamin at
breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. It may
help prevent your afternoon energy lull.
2. avoid eating too many carbohydrates
(such as breads or pastas) at lunch and be
sure to have some protein with your meal.
also, avoid sugary snacks – they will cause
you to crash later on. a salad with grilled
chicken or shrimp is a good lunch choice.
3. always have water at your desk.
Dehydration is a common cause of
fatigue and headaches.
4. taking a liquid vitamin B complex with
your lunch may also give you a boost. this
is a helpful supplement to keep at work.
5. go for a walk around the block to get
some fresh air. a change of scenery will
wake you up.
6. exercise, exercise, exercise! You will
not believe the increase in your energy if
you perform your workout in the morning,
though working out after work is just
as beneficial.
7. adaptogenic herbs, like rhodiola,
ginseng or licorice can increase vitality
– especially if the cause of your fatigue
is ongoing stress or overwork. these are
available at your local health food store
and are often in the section called adrenal
gland supplements. Your adrenal glands
are commonly referred to as your stress
glands because they release adrenalin
and cortisol when you are in stressful
situations. herbs to support their function
can help increase your energy reserves.
8. ensure seven-and-a-half to nine hours
of sleep every night. too little sleep is just
as harmful as too much. If you find that
you consistently need more than nine
hours of sleep every night, a trip to your
doctor’s office to evaluate causes of fatigue
may be worthwhile. ask for an assessment
of your thyroid to rule out hypothyroidism
and your iron, folic acid, vitamin B12 and
complete blood count to rule out anaemia,
both of which can cause fatigue. W
Business owner? Opening a Health Spending Account
is an excellent way to reduce your taxable income.
Make your healthcare
expenses tax-deductible
by Tina Tehranchian
wOULDn’t it be great to be able to get a
tax credit for all your medical and dental
expenses throughout the year? Currently
though you can only claim a non-refundable
federal tax credit of 15% (plus any
provincial credit) of qualifying medical
expenses over a threshold of $2,052, or
three per cent of net income if lower.
If you are an employee and are fortunate
enough to have a group benefit plan at
your place of work, you
can benefit from the tax
advantages that it offers.
the premiums that your
employer pays for your
group insurance plan are
considered an expense
and are tax deductible to
your employer but are not
considered a taxable benefit
for you. however, all
group benefit plans have
limits on how much they
will pay for prescription
drugs or dental expenses.
If you happen to have
teenagers and had to pay for their braces
lately you would agree that the most generous
dental plans fail to pay a fraction of
the costs involved.
the good news is that if you are selfemployed
or if you own a business you
can go one step further and establish a
health Spending account to be able to
pay for a much wider range of medical
and dental expenses on a tax deductible
basis. You can also extend this benefit to
your employees.
a health Spending account (hSa) is a
uniquely designed bank account, set up
exclusively for the purposes of healthcare
spending. established in compliance with
all contributions
are recognized
as a business
deduction for the
year in which they
were contributed,
even if the
money is not
spent that year.
70 whateVer magazIne | SUmmer 2011
the Income tax act, all contributions are
recognized as a business deduction for
the year in which they were contributed,
even if the money is not spent that year. If
you are an incorporated business, unspent
contributions are not lost at year-end and
you can carry those contributions forward
and spend them for healthcare expenses
in future years.
while all traditional healthcare costs,
like dental, prescription drugs and vision
care are eligible medical expenses under
the terms of the hSa, the list of eligible
medical expenses extends to cover other
costs such as: family
orthodontic, restorative
dental, laser eye surgery,
massage therapy,
prescribed vitamins and
supplements and even
long term care costs for
elderly dependants.
Before the 2010 Budget,
even Botox injections,
liposuction, teeth whitening,
cosmetic surgery
and hair replacement
procedures were considered
eligible expenses
for the hSas. however,
the Department of Finance introduced
an amendment to the medical expense
tax Credit provisions in march 2010 that
restricted the availability of this tax credit
for cosmetic procedures only to those
procedures that are necessary for medical
or reconstructive purposes.
Once your employer deposits funds into a
health Spending account for you, they are
there for your benefit or for your eligible
dependents and cannot revert back to
the employer. as an employee, your hSa
remains in your control even after you
leave your employer.
From a tax perspective, deposits to a
health Spending account for an employee
are an extension of employee compensation
plan and are therefore tax free to the
employee. For incorporated businesses,
there are no annual maximums; however,
deposited funds may be spent on legitimate
medical expenses only. Unspent
funds from one year can be carried forward
indefinitely for future spending.
If you are self-employed, have no employees
and do not have an incorporated
business, there are annual maximums
imposed on the annual contributions you
can make, which is determined by the
size of your family, or the number of your
dependents. If you do not use your contributions
in the year of contribution they
can be carried forward for a maximum of
two years.
In this scenario, you can contribute a
maximum of $1,500 for yourself and the
same amount for your spouse and each
of your eligible dependents over the age
of 18. For each eligible dependent under
18, only $7,500 can be contributed to
the plan.
all contributions are recognized by Cra
as legitimate business deductions and,
consequently, lower your taxable income.
If left unspent, after 24 months you will
forfeit the money. In reality, the chances
of losing your contributions to the plan
are slim as usually the plan administrator
will use a ‘first in – first out’ accounting
method to reduce the chances of forfeiture.
In addition, you will receive quarterly
statements to remind you of your balance.
health Spending accounts are excellent
tax saving tools but they are complex and
you should talk to a qualified financial
planner who understands the nuances of
these plans to ensure that they are suitable
for you. W
rather than take the kitchen route, his
expertise was behind the scenes, helping
with the business side of things.
however, the early success of the restaurant
really traces its roots to his mother
rosa, who not only had a passion for
cooking delicious food, but also taking
a delight in sharing her creations with
others. She opened her first restaurant
in 1964 at Dundas and grace in toronto.
although a small and unpretentious
place, the food was so appetizing that
those who tried it once came back again
and again, while spreading the word to
others as well.
robert turkiewicz recalls that diners
absolutely loved the fresh authentic
Calabrese food prepared by his mother.
“She cooked in a similar loving way as
she did for her own family,” he said.
rosa herself believed that the best form
of advertising was word of mouth. the
food was good, the service was friendly
and she worked hard. Before they knew
it, they had to expand three times over
until finally they outgrew the place and
moved a little further north.
In 1971, they moved to Jane and
Shoreham, where they enjoyed continued
success for nine years before moving
once again, this time to Finch avenue
west – which remained their location
until they decided it was time to bring the
restaurant to woodbridge.
right from its early days, rosa’s Place
has attracted lovers of authentic, traditional
Italian cuisine – among them celebrities
like singers andrea Bocelli, toto
turkiewicz has teamed up with his wife
marcella, originally from montalcilo,
Italy, and also brought on board a specialty
chef to bring new menu ideas to
the table.
“we are here to embrace families, business
Last Word
A Father’s Day Promise
One of the lingering memories of my childhood
is how my father would come into my room every
morning and kiss me on the forehead before he
left for work. In many ways, I think that is always
how I will remember my father.
as I got older, my relationship with my father was
reduced to messages from my mother. I could
tell it was hard for him to see me grow into a
young lady. although we really had minimal contact,
there was still a closeness that is difficult
to translate into words. his inability to verbalize
his affection however was a product of his background,
of what our culture taught him (or rather
didn’t teach him).
I think back to his life and wonder what effect did
it have on him to lose his mother at the tender
age of eight. how did he cope with his mother
dying during the Second world war? he recalls
crawling with her in the trenches to avoid bombings.
the way he told it, a bomb once landed
really close to her and she went into shock, never
came out of it and died three days later.
In many ways I now understand his parenting
from fear. I understand his wanting to be so protective.
I understand it now. I can’t imagine living
through a war today, let alone losing a parent
during such a tough time when poverty, fear and
famine were rampant.
I wonder how else the war contributed to the man
he is today. I feel immense compassion for how he
probably had to just move on and survive and how
he wasn’t afforded the luxury of time to understand
it and analyze it like we do today. he had to
simply get on with life.
today, as a senior of 76 years of age, my father is a
changed person from the man he was while I was
growing up. he still greets everyone with a smile
on his face, but the signs of aging are evident in
his face and in the way he moves. he is still dedicated
to the daily walks he has been taking since
his triple bypass surgery in 2003, yet the bounce in
his step has long since gone. It’s the most activity
I see my father talking part in. he has lost some
zest for life, he has been burdened with family disappointments
and suffered the loss of siblings.
every disappointment and hurt seemed to take
years off his life. he is a simple and caring man,
never asking for much other than to have his
family close by. there is a profound sadness in
seeing this aging process, the light slowly dimming
in his eyes.
as a daughter, there is a sense of sadness I
how I can assist him in these later years. Perhaps
we share a sense of longing over how our family
I’m not sure how to approach this stage of his
we do have, to see a man who worked so hard to
Celebrating my father cannot be just about one
Father’s Day, that’s just a hallmark holiday; loving
my dad has to be an everyday event. I think to
myself how many times do I get so busy with life
as I can, but living in another part of the country
sometimes keeps him out of sight and out of
mind. as he enters a very challenging time in his
life, I too must change and adapt to be able to
provide all he needs from me.
my promise this Father’s Day is to be an active
participant in my dad’s life, not just an observer.
I don’t know what the future holds for him, but
what I do know is that I want him to remember
me for as long as he is able. when and if that
day comes when he does not, I will love him still
as the father who would kiss me goodbye before
leaving for work every morning. It’s one thing
to love someone from a distance and another to
put those words into action. I hope we can come
together as a family and give my father many
