Discover how to “talk” to animals! Campers will be training more 

NEW behaviors with a variety of Zoo animals including goats, 

chickens and other birds. Learn about animal behavior and motivation 

while applying training techniques taught by Zoo professionals.

When it’s cold and dreary outside, kids do not always get the chance to jump and 

dance and sing! The Zoo would like to change that! In collaboration with Miss 

Amanda’s Music Garden, certified early childhood music specialist, Amanda 

O’Bannon, will teach you and your toddler how to move and sing like the plants 

and animals. Zoo educators will also be on hand to bring some special animal friends 

to visit the classroom! 

Note: Siblings not falling within the 18-36 month age range cannot be accommodated 

in this class. However, infant siblings are welcome on the dates listed as “infants 

welcome”.

BIRD TREATS 

Feeding birds in the winter can be a treat for them as well as a treat for us as we 

watch them at the feeders! Discover who some of your feathered neighbors are in 

the winter and meet a real bird up close. Then, make a special winter treat for the 

birds, using cereal and popcorn which you can take home!

discover why it’s so much fun to move in so many different ways!

ANYBODY HOME? 

Do you rest in a nest? Do you doze in a den? From the tallest tree to an underground 

burrow, animals have some very odd and interesting homes. We’ll encounter 

some animals both in the classroom and on exhibit and learn about how their 

bodies help them to live in their special homes.

CHOMPERS 

An animal’s teeth can tell us a lot about that animal! Take an up close (and safe!) 

look at some incredible teeth and find out what clues they provide us. Then, some 

special guests will be on hand to teach us more about their own teeth!

Did you know that animals can “talk”? Find out what they’re saying as we discover

ANIMAL DEFENSES 

The rattle of a snake’s tail, the camouflage of a praying mantis, and even the spray 

of a skunk are just a few of the wild ways that animals defend themselves. We’ll 

go on an adventure to look for animals with more wild defenses and meet a few up 

close! Who’s the king or queen of defenses? You decide!

IN DEPTH PROGRAM FOR 8-11 YEAR OLDS 

This program delves deeply into a specific animal, 

its ecology, biology and behavior and will transform 

interest into expertise! 


SNOW LEOPARDS 

Join us as we reveal the mysterious 

ghost cat also known as the snow leopard. 

The snow leopard inhabits some the 

world’s roughest environments. Living 

at altitudes as high as 18,000 feet, these 

powerful predators can leap 45 feet in 

a single bound and capture prey up to 

three times their size before disappearing 

into their Himalayan habitat!

PREDATORS OF THE SKIES 

Whether it’s a screech owl that weighs as much as a loaf of bread or a bald eagle 

that can be as heavy as a bowling ball, birds of prey are wonderfully adapted hunters. 

Come meet some of the Zoo’s own birds of prey and learn about their unique stories 

as well as how they are adapted to survive.

HIDING, HUNTING AND HANGING OUT 

Despite their fondness for meat, cats depend on plants, too! Come discover how 

a cheetah relies on savannah grasses and “play trees” in Africa and why an ocelot 

would be out of luck without the trees of a rainforest. We’ll also turn you into a 

cheetah, as we “Race Against Extinction” in this lively game.

THE SCOOP ON POOP 

Ever wonder what an elephant leaves behind or where it goes? Even if you’ve never 

entertained such thoughts, this class is guaranteed to get you excited about animal 

scat! From identification to diet, an animal’s scat can reveal a lot about an animal. 

In addition, lots of animals like to call scat “home”. Learn to identify some of our 

Zoo animals by some “unusual” means as we get up close with the scoop on poop!

LET’S PLAY! 

What’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys? Animal enrichment, of course! 

Whether it is a box sprayed with perfume or apples hidden in a pile of mulch, keeping 

the animals at the Zoo entertained can be a creative job. In this class, we’ll learn 

the purpose and process that goes into the creation of enrichment items at the Zoo. 

Then, we’ll make an enrichment treat for some special Zoo residents.

BACKSTAGE PASS JR 

Is your 12-14 year old looking for a more in-depth, once-in-a-lifetime experience 

at the Zoo? These specially designed classes allow an opportunity for an up-close 

and personal look at some of the places the Zoo animals call home, and most even 

include an encounter with Zoo animals! All participants will receive a keepsake 

backstage pass nametag on a zoo-themed lanyard as a souvenir of their adventure. 


REPTILE WRANGLERS 

Is it scaly, ectothermic, and devours mice? Then chances are these keepers 

take care of it. Come and meet a reptile keeper at the Zoo and tour the back 

holding areas of the Reptile House where you’ll learn about their job and the 

amazing animals in their care. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

THE ZOO GOURMET 

Back by popular demand! Food is a huge part of celebrating holidays. 

At the Zoo, our animals feast year-round on carefully planned 

diets. Join us for a holiday food frenzy and learn how we feed 

thousands of animals every day. Through a game, close encounters, 

and a behind the scenes tour of the Zoo’s commissary, find out 

why different animals eat different foods and how the Zoo manages its menus and 

get some fresh ideas about staying healthy yourself!

SEASON’S GREENINGS

SCOUT PROGRAMS 

These fun, interactive, 2.5 hour scout programs help your troop or den complete 

all requirements necessary to earn a scouting badge or achievement. 

Each program includes an animal demonstration, Zoo hike, and 

other activities such as a game or craft. 

Programs are offered every Saturday at either 9:30 am-noon or 1-3:30 pm, and 

every Sunday (March–May and September–mid-November) from 1-3:30 pm.

NOCTURNAL ADVENTURES 

FAMILY SLEEP WITH THE MANATEES 

Adults and children 5 years old and up are invited to spend the night with our 

resident Florida manatees- Wooten, and 2400-pound Betsy. During this over 

night you will enjoy two sneak peaks behind the scenes, play games, and fall 

asleep with manatees swimming at your feet.

WILD WINTER NIGHTS 

Adults and children 5 years old and up are invited to have a wild time during 

these long winter nights and sleep over at the Zoo! Have you ever wondered 

where animals spend the winter months? Or where animals get their food 

when the ground is covered with snow? Your family will explore the physical 

and behavioral characteristics of winter animals as you discover the meaning of 

adaptation. Play games, tour buildings, meets some of our animal ambassadors, 

and even go behind the scenes. We hope you’ll den up at the Zoo for Wild 

Winter Nights! 

Dates: January 26 or February 23: 6 pm-9 am

Adults and 4-10 year olds are invited to join us to foster fitness, family and fun 

with wildlife at the Zoo. Adults and children must purchase separate tickets. 

Roar like a tiger. Fly like a bird. Move as slowly as a sloth. Explore the 

world of animals and plants in a fun new way – through yoga! You and 

your child will discover more about animals and plants through the 

practice of yoga. This fun and active program is a beginner/mid-level 

level class for adults and children and can serve as a great foundation 

for developing an interest in wildlife and fitness that can last a 

lifetime. Yoga mats are provided. Please bring a bottle of water and 

wear comfortable clothing.

GARDEN PROGRAMS 

LANDSCAPING FOR THE HOMEOWNER SERIES 

Join us for one of the most informative and complete landscape series for homeowners in the area. If you are planning on garden renovation or a new 

installation in your landscape, these classes provide great insight on design, preparation and plant selection with emphasis on plants that do best in the 

Tri-state area. Classes are offered separately but also build upon one another. Take time now to gain the knowledge of soil preparation, maintenance and 

plant selection and you’ll be ready to hit the ground in spring creating a thriving & beautiful garden. 

All classes meet on Wednesdays from 7-9 pm starting January 16

January 16 – Design your own landscape – Part 1 

The focus of this class is the simple steps that every designer takes 

when evaluating a new landscape or renovating an existing landscape. 

Basic design principles will be discussed. 

January 23 – Design Your Own Landscape – Part 2 

This is a more in-depth look at where plants go and why they go there. 

We will discuss the size and scale of the landscape, as well as proper 

bed preparation. 

January 30 – Trees in the Landscape 

Choosing the right tree for your landscape can be a costly decision. A 

slide presentation will illustrate the various types of trees that you can 

use. Shade trees, flowering trees, patio trees and evergreen trees will be 

presented. 

February 6 - Shrubs in the Landscape 

View a slide presentation on the best shrubs for Cincinnati area 

landscapes. Whether you have sun or shade, wet soils or dry, this class 

will present the possibilities of shrubs for the home landscape. Special 

emphasis will be on the newest and hardiest varieties for this area. 

February 13 - Annuals: Color in the Landscape 

Have you ever wondered what the secrets are to having lots of color 

in your landscape? Find out what the newest and best annuals are that 

tolerate Cincinnati summers. Container gardening with annuals will also 

be covered. 

February 20 – Landscape Maintenance and Lawn Care 

This class will cover proper landscape maintenance techniques from 

spring to fall-what to do and when to do it. Learn about the tools 

that make the job easier. In addition, learn the basics to a green lawn. 

Pruning, weed control, fertilization, insect and disease control for the 

complete landscape will all be covered. 

February 27 – Perennial Design 

This class presents basic design concepts for perennial gardens, including 

butterfly gardens, shade gardens, water gardens and more. A slide 

show will help paint a picture after discussing the concepts. 

March 6 – Perennial Plants – Part 1 

This is the first of a two part series covering perennials plants for the 

landscape. Perennials can be used in many ways and for many purposes. 

A slide show will include the top 50 perennials for the landscape. 

March 13 - Perennial Plants – Part 2 

The second part of perennial plants will also be a slide show of perennials 

for the landscape. This group will include ornamental grasses, roses, 

vines and other great perennial plants. 

March 20 - Gardening for Wildlife 

This class will focus on creating specialized areas of the landscape for 

wildlife gardening including butterfly and bird gardens and utilizing native 

plants in the landscape. 

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 

FOR BEGINNERS 

The Zoo is a great place to learn to be a shutterbug! During this 4 part series, 

Brian Jorg, Zoo Horticulturist and professional photographer, will walk you 

through the fundamentals of SLR digital photography and how to apply this 

new knowledge to photographing wildlife and landscapes. 

All classes meet on either Tuesdays from 5-7 pm or Saturdays from 

8-10 am. Please register for either the Tuesday series or Saturday series.

Introduction to Digital Photography 

This class, geared toward beginner photographers who want to get more out 

of their camera, will cover SLR camera basics, exposure, aperture, shutter 

speed, close-up, and landscape techniques. This classroom instruction will help 

make you a better photographer; Attendees are encouraged to bring their 

cameras to class. 

Tues., Feb. 19 or Sat., Feb. 23- 

Travel and Landscape Photography 

Join us for a two hour photography class that will teach you how to get the 

most out of your travel photography. Whether you plan to go to the Great 

Smoky Mountains for a family vacation or the Masai Mara for a grand safari, 

we will show you how to capture the trip in pictures. From traveling with gear 

to how to shoot culture, wildlife and landscapes, this class is for you.

Photo Safari-Spring Blooms 

This workshop will blend technical expertise with knowledge of the Zoo’s 

overwhelming flower displays. We will ‘focus’ on landscape and macro photography 

opportunities with our botanical collection. What better place to learn 

all the tricks to take better outdoor images than a botanical garden? Attendees 

should bring their camera and tripod if they have one. 

Sat., April 13 or Tues., April 30- 

Photo Safari- Wildlife 

This workshop will blend technical expertise with knowledge of the Zoo’s 

wildlife collection. Join us as we peruse the Zoo in search of great wildlife 

shots. What better place to learn all the tricks to take better wildlife images 

than a Zoo? Attendees should bring their camera and tripod if they have one.

BACKSTAGE PASS 

Are you looking for a more intimate, once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Zoo? Look no 

further than the Backstage Pass Programs! All programs include an up-close and personal 

look at some of the places the Zoo animals call home. All participants will receive a 

keepsake backstage pass on a zoo-themed lanyard as a souvenir of your adventure. 


WHAT’S UP, DOC? 

How do you x-ray an aardvark? Who gives the Zoo babies get their first vaccines? 

Find out the answers to these questions and more when you tour the 

Zoo’s state-of-the-art vet hospital! With a behind the scenes tour, you’ll learn 

about the equipment and procedures involved in keeping the Zoo animals 

healthy. Note: Participants will not witness any veterinary procedures.

THE WILD SIDE OF LOVE 

Back by popular demand! To what extreme did you go to get your mate…or are 

you still in the process? Either way, it is nothing compared to the courtship extremes 

found in the natural world! Join us at the Zoo for a sizzling night of insight 

into the lengths to which some species go to procreate. This wild night of love will 

include champagne, chocolate and strawberries.

A Letter from Thane 

Thank you for your support of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. If you 

are reading this, you most likely have been over to the Zoo recently to see 

some of the big changes underway. The Cincinnati Zoo is a much more engaging 

place than it was years ago. Think back to your Zoo visit just five years 

ago. Think back to a time prior to our new entry and expanded parking that today makes 

your visit so much easier. Think back to your Zoo experience prior to the opening of Giraffe Ridge and 

then fast forward to the smiles and memories that giraffe feeding brings to your family on every visit. 

Since 2007 it has been our goal to “inspire every visitor with wildlife, every day”. And thanks to our 

amazing staff and volunteers we are focused on providing more up close and personal experiences with 

our animals - more shows, feedings, and keeper encounters. We are proud of the dynamic and engaging 

experiences we have created. And we are not finished yet….. 

That giant construction project in the middle of our old parking lot is our AFRICA exhibit. It is the 

biggest and most exciting exhibit in the history of the Cincinnati Zoo. With eye to eye views of lions and 

cheetahs, underwater views of hippos, it is sure to engage and inspire the next generation of Zoo guests
