FPC Freshawards 2018
The FPC Freshawards continues to grow from strength
to strength and this year for the first time we held
the event at the spectacular Pavilion at the Tower of
London. This is the biggest event on the FPC calendar
and one we particularly look forward to, it’s a ‘coming
together’ of the industry to celebrate some of the
brightest talent and most outstanding businesses.
Each year we are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm
for this competition and the high standard of the
entries and this year has been no exception. Voting
for your favourite retailer included an industry poll
which widened the dynamic and we’ve developed the
judging process over the years, each entry is scored
independently by each judge prior to the judging
day. Our judges hale from across the sector and their
combined knowledge and experience, together with
their expertise and commitment, give the competition
the kudos it deserves.
As you leaf through these pages you will see
spectacular achievements, starting with our fantastic
Lifetime Achievement recipient Laurence Olins.
Such great achievement and passion serves as pure
inspiration for the young and aspirational.
I hope you enjoyed this year’s Freshawards and I hope
you’ll enter next year – you could be our next winner!
Winner
Laurence Olins
Laurence Olins is well known and highly
respected across the industry and he has
a long heritage in the fresh produce sector.
His great grandfather emigrated to England
in the 1880s from Kiev in the Ukraine and
started a greengrocery business at the end
of the 19th century. Laurence’s grandfather,
Louis Olins, subsequently opened his
own fruit wholesale business in 1919 at
Spitalfields Market, trading under the name
Louis Reece and the company prospered.
In 1935 Laurence’s father joined the
business which was now operating as an
importer and wholesaler in produce from
the continent and across the Empire. WWII
inhibited imports, so the business bought
fruit farms in Cambridgeshire and after
the war it grew rapidly opening wholesale
outlets in Covent Garden, Birmingham and
other UK markets whilst purchasing fruit
farms in Kent and establishing a central
packhouse and transport fleet. The focus
then moved to deep water imports, which
together with the strong UK fruit business,
produced a legacy continued to this day.
Laurence was raised in North West London
with his twin brother and two younger
brothers, and from an early age he showed
a highly competitive streak together with
noticeable leadership qualities. He excelled
at school especially in sport and captained
rugby and cricket teams.
After graduating from Leeds University
with a degree in economics, Laurence
joined the family business, Louis Reece,
and began his career in London’s iconic
wholesale markets. In September 1969 he
worked as a salesman in Spitalfields Market
transferring a year later to Covent Garden
Market, where he ran two businesses.
In 1980 Laurence was promoted within
the family business to Deputy Managing
Director and in 1985 he was involved in
the sale of Louis Reece to Glass Glover
where he became a director and left the
market to head up a direct sales and
importing operation. Two years later he
was appointed managing director of
Poupart following a buy-in by himself, his
twin brother Paul, brother Jonathan and
cousin Adam. His son Benn and nephew
Adrian later joined Poupart bringing the 5th
generation into the business.
In 1992 Laurence became Chief
Executive of Hillsdown Produce and was
subsequently part of the management
buy-out team which acquired Poupart
from Hillsdown in 1997 and he remained
Managing Director of Poupart until 2007
when he was appointed Chairman of the
Poupart Group of Companies.
He used his expertise and leadership to
benefit the wider industry and started a
parallel career as non-executive director to
produce companies including Valley Grown
Salads, G’s, Reynolds and latterly Grace
Foods.
At the peak of his career Laurence was
the Director/Chairman of a wide range of
food, distribution, marketing and farming
companies operating across the UK and
Europe as well as the USA, Caribbean and
Africa with a combined turnover in excess
of £1 billion.
With a passion for Corporate Social
Responsibility, Laurence joined the
Worshipful Company of Fruiterers
becoming Master in 2000. He initiated
the annual City Food Lecture at Guildhall,
London which he chaired for 14 years and
he was also elected Chairman of British
Summer Fruits (soft fruit crop association).
Following the UK referendum to leave
the EU, he was at the forefront of the
debate over the fresh produce industry’s
subsequent labour shortages.
In December 2017, Laurence retired as
Chairman of the Poupart Group, now
the second largest national produce
company operating out of its head office in
Hertfordshire with offices in Essex, Kent and
Surrey along with its associate companies
and branches in Holland and Spain.
During an extraordinary 50 year
career, Laurence has had a colossal
impact right across the fresh produce
industry, from berries to salads and
beyond. His legacy is inspirational
and a tremendous example to future
generations. His dedication and
commitment to the industry together
with his passion for CSR make
Laurence one of our all time greatest
Aldi
2017 was a record breaking year
for Aldi, with increased sales
and over half of UK households
now shopping with Britain’s fifth
largest supermarket.
Aldi’s core values of simplicity,
consistency and responsibility
are at the heart of all its
endeavours: from backing British
farmers through the National
Farmers Union’s Fruit and Veg
Pledge, supporting 400 young
Kenyan farmers to develop
foundation skills for a
sustainable business, to
educating millions of children
about the benefits of fresh
fruit and vegetables as part
of a healthy diet. It’s Get Set
to Eat Fresh programme has
set the challenging target to
improve the eating habits of
1.2 million young people by 2020.
By signing up to the Courtauld Commitment 2025 Aldi
also pledges to reduce the impact of food and drink waste,
including packaging.
Aldi has demonstrated its undertaking towards ethical and
longstanding relationships with its suppliers and growers.
It was named the most compliant retailer in the Groceries
Supply Code of Practice for the fourth year running – the
only supermarket to hold this accolade.
Judges’ comment:
We applaud Aldi for its
long-term commitment in the
George Carruthers & Sons
Carruthers overcame the immediate challenges of the
Glasgow Fruit Market fire to continue trading and, through
hard work and dedication,
harness the potential for
expansion to ensure the
longevity and profitability
of the wholesale fruit
and vegetable industry in
Glasgow.
GT Produce has demonstrated its continuing dedication
to the requirements of customers and investment in the
wholesale sector. The company identified its customers’ need
to access market information and have contact with the sales
team at different times of the day compared to a traditional
wholesale operation.
Managers, staff and customers contributed to the decisionmaking
to reorganise working practices. The company
restructured its working day, increased the size of its cold
store, and modernised its transport fleet.
As a result, GT Produce extended opening hours by 100 per
cent, increased customer contact and information, while at
the same time reducing transport costs. The introduction of
a five-day week for sales staff who previously worked six days
a week makes a real change to their lives, and hopefully will
help encourage younger recruits to the wholesale industry.
Finalist
company is set to develop and
run business. Shopping at Keelham’s becomes a journey
of discovery, with innovations like soup and veggie bags
allowing customers to buy as little as needed to cook from
scratch. The farm shop even runs a Veg Exchange Scheme
for customers to have home-grown surplus produce sold on
their behalf, in return for credit.
Keelham’s has championed the fresh produce sector,
working with the local community to support its regional
network of over 400 growers and suppliers. It’s been giving
away free fresh fruit to children for many years, part of several
initiatives to encourage healthy eating,
and reconnect the younger generation
with fruit and vegetables.
Judges’ comment:
Not just a shop,
Keelham’s is a fabulous
food and eating experience
Blue Skies
This initiative reignites
the traditional
school farm concept
to encourage young
people to consider
farming as an
attractive career option. As a result
of the competition, more students
are studying agriculture, and schools
are offering agricultural science in
response to growing demand.
Winner
G’s Fresh Mushrooms
The mushroom industry alone generates an estimated
4,300 tons of plastic each year from the retail market. There
had been little packaging innovation in the sector since the
1980s, and G’s set out to find a compostable solution with no
detrimental impact on the environment.
G’s has led the market to develop a commercially viable,
certified home compostable punnet, tested for its durability,
presentation and shelf life.
Working with its partner CKF Inc. G’s overcame a number
of challenges created by the respiration of mushrooms
which could weaken the punnets. G’s is the first business
to successfully seal top seal pulp for mushrooms and this
breakthrough opens up a significant opportunity in the future
of produce packaging.
Handling
This initiative will
set up the only
dedicated airside
perishable handling
facility at Heathrow Airport,
providing an alternative option
for agents and importers at
this key point of entry. The
facility will maintain temperature integrity, cut costs,
improve handling times, and reduce waste.
Winner
British Cherry Growers
This initiative brought together cherry growers to develop
modern grading facilities, generating sufficient volume of
product to create economies of scale. The facility is the first
of its kind in the UK and has contributed to increased sales
and customer satisfaction.
Historically British cherries have been hand graded. With
inaccurate grading, increasing problems with sourcing
labour, this sector needed a solution to meet its forecast of
significant growth in tonnage.
The creation of a new
grower group, British
Cherry Growers, and
collaboration to build
a bespoke system with
Unitec has created a
homogenous product,
produced in scale with a
high degree of efficiency
and reliability.
Judges’ comment:
This is a good message for
the industry, showing how
collaboration works
and encouraging exports of
British produce
