That’s exactly what Malibu resident Rachel DeAngelis did when she was crowned Miss Junior Teen United States on July 7 in Orlando. DeAngelis, 15, was up against 49 other girls for the national title in her category. “I started crying and thanking God,” DeAngelis said. “I’ve been working at it so hard for the past three years and this title means so much to me.” DeAngelis participated in oneon-one round robin interviews with judges and costume, swimwear and evening gown competitions earlier in the week. To represent California, she chose to wear an eagle costume designed by Giselle Boone and won based on a judged point system. “The California Bald Eagle was chosen as a symbol for this great nation because of its physical power and magnificent looks,” DeAngelis wrote on her Instagram page. “This fierce beauty symbolizes the strength and freedom to the U.S. I was proud to wear this costume.” DeAngelis also won best in evening gown. The category is scored based on how graceful the contestant is on a stage, presentation and how confident the contestant is in a designer gown. She modeled a turquoise gown designed by DeAngelis herself and made by Kenneth Barlis, whom she will also be walking for in the fall during New York Fashion Week. During the finals, DeAngelis was placed in the Top 16, then the Top 10, Top 5 and the Top 2. It was down to her and Miss Junior Teen North Carolina. “My emotions were all over the place and I was beyond floored [when crowned],” DeAngelis said. “It was a wonderful experience and my first time being in Florida.” After DeAngelis was crowned Miss Junior Teen California United States in March, she told Surfside News that her ultimate pageant goal was to win a national title. She can now proudly say that she has. “I’m a goal setter and love to accomplish as much as I possibly can,” DeAngelis said. “I want to win as many different titles in the different age groups. Right now, I am enjoying and making the most of it.” DeAngelis also made close friends with the other contestants. She said they joked lovingly, along with pageant staff, by calling her “California Barbie” because of DeAngelis’ love of the color pink. The contestants also invited her to come to their states for charity events. “Almost every day I dressed in pink because it looks good on blonde,” DeAngelis said. “I also had black and pink luggage. “The contestants were kind enough to invite me to different community service events where they live. I’m so glad I made friends with them.” As a national title holder, DeAngelis is currently trying to secure a spot in the upcoming Disney parade and other parades across the nation. She also is passionate about promoting her personal platform: Healthy Heart, Healthy Life, through the American Heart Association. “The United States is the No. 1 country for obesity and I would love to solve this issue,” DeAngelis said. “The importance of being a title holder is how we can help serve our country and be role models. I’m really excited to take on this next year.” Malibu resident Rachel DeAngelis wears her latest sash and crown with pride after being crowned July 7 in Orlando.
