what you did. You went to
sock hops on Friday night.”
Along with dinner from
Orland Chateau and entertainment
by the band Sundance
— who played a variety
of hits including “Can’t
Help Falling in Love,” “This
Magic Moment” and “Tequila”
— the event also featured
door prizes, a raffle,
a costume contest and, of
course, a whole lot of dancing.
Shortly after dinner,
attendees lined up in two
groups to participate in the
casual saunter that is The
Stroll.
Tinley Park resident Lorrie
Corgan explained that
she loves all of the songs
from the ’50s and she has a
few favorite dances, too.
“The Jitterbug, naturally,”
she said. “The Stroll, and
we used to do the cha-cha a
lot. It makes you feel young
again to hear all the songs
from the ’50s.”
For many, the company of
the 225 people in attendance
was the true highlight of the
Sock Hop.
“It’s great to see people
getting together. Everyone’s
having a ball, and that’s what
it’s all about,” said Tinley
Park resident Tom Lyons.
The Toccis also counted
the collective camaraderie of
Sock Hop attendees as one
of the best elements of the
event.
“We love the Sock Hop,”
Holly said. “The music, the
camaraderie, the ambience
of it. It’s just wonderful. The
Orland Chateau is a beautiful
place, and Marie and the Orland
Township do a wonderful
job with all the dances.”
Orland Township has a
lot more fun in store with
its upcoming senior services
events, including a Roaring
’20s Dinner Dance on Sept.
27 and Dancing with the Senior
Stars on Nov. 13. The
Senior Dating Game also is
returning, with a casting call
to take place Aug. 14 before
the live show on Oct. 4 at
Orland Chateau.
They say if you love your
job, then you never work a
day in your life. Perhaps
that’s Orland Township’s secret
to always hosting events
that are welcoming, warm
and a whole lot of fun.
“I love the seniors,” Ryan
said. “They are great people,
and they make me happy. I
love my job, so I’m happy to
be here and be here with all
of them.”
