MORE THAN NECESSARY?
Whether used to treat high cholesterol, chronic pain, hypertension,
mental health issues, or other conditions, seniors can be prescribed
several medications simultaneously to manage ongoing health issues.
The term used to describe the simultaneous use of multiple medications
to treat one or more conditions is “polypharmacy,” which can often result
in negative outcomes. The fact is that more than one-third of seniors over
the age of 75 are taking at least five prescription medications per day, and
more is not necessarily better. An older patient can be on one medication
to treat a condition and also be on another medication to treat a side
effect of the first medication without knowing it. A medication review can
halt this problem.
Drug interactions can occur if no single healthcare provider knows the
patient’s complete medication picture. The drug categories most
commonly involved in adverse reactions include cardiovascular agents,
antibiotics, diuretics, anticoagulants, steroids, opioids, and nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs or NSDs. For more information, please call
VILLAGE PHARMACY at 781-334-3133. We are located in the Colonial
Shopping Center and open Mon.-Fri., 9-8; Sat. 9-5; and Sun. and
holidays, 9-1:30.
HINT: Due to the fractured way in which our healthcare system
operates, a patient’s treatment and medication histories aren’t usually
summarized in one cohesive medical record unless the patient uses a
single pharmacy for all his or her medical need
