BY IAN-MICHAEL BERGERON
@ianmichaelinwonderland
I was finishing up work on
Friday when I got a text from
one of my good friends, GF:
“Want to go to a birthday
party for my friend B
tonight?”
I’d never met B, but I love an
impromptu party. I responded
to my last email, shut my
laptop and made my way to
Brooklyn.
B, an aspiring artist, lived in
a two-story brownstone that
he’d completely redone:
The walls were vibrant with
fresh, dark paint, the molding
contrasting
in white, the
hardwood
floors
polished.
I went
upstairs—
when was the last time I’d
gone upstairs in someone’s
home? I wondered.
The bedroom had amazing
sunlight, perfectly lighting
a collection of paintings
selling for $200 to $500, a sea
of abstract blues sweeping
across plain canvases. “I just
can’t stand my 9-5 anymore,”
B said, shaking his head.
“This is what I want to be
doing with my life.”
Downstairs, I made friends
with the only straight boy
at the party, an aspiring
illustrator. We gathered in the
kitchen (why is it that the party
always ends up gathering
in the kitchen?) and talked
about illustration and
of publishing. We’d
both moved to New
York years ago to
pursue our art, and
now, a little jaded but
still fighting, we clung
to any work we could
get.
A Little Party
Never Killed Nobody
I wandered outside
(two stories AND
a backyard!) and
found a small group
smoking a joint.
Without a word, they
held it out to me.
Fifteen minutes later, I
speculated on fucking
an ice cream cake:
“If you fucked an ice
cream cake, would
you rather it be the
cake on the inside, or
the ice cream?”
Nobody asked why
I was fucking an ice
cream cake, but
someone said, “The cake
should be on the inside, so
the tip of your penis isn’t in
the cold ice cream.” Genius.
A few drinks later, I wandered
back into the gallery, mostly
to make sure my bag was still
intact. It was, so I sat next to
a tall, blond boy, hair just as
fake as mine, and listened
to his conversation with an
energetic brunette in a little
black dress.
“Tomorrow will be the first
time I’ve hosted a brunch,” he
continued as I sat down.
“Is it for 8 or 10?” She asked.
“That’s really important; you
need to make sure you have
enough sets of silverware.
Number one thing people
forget about when hosting
brunch.” Floating in my own
world, I listened to them talk
about cutlery, not interjecting
a word but occasionally
nodding for support—and
taking hits of the joint they
passed around.
I thought of everyone there,
full of aspiring, creative
20-somethings. Would any of
us make it? Were we chasing
empty dreams? Did he have
enough silverware for his
brunch?
I hope we make it. Sometimes
it’s the hope that gets us
there.
Realizing I should go home
and write something, I picked
up my backpack, waved a few
goodbyes and wandered into
the hot, sticky night, already
dreaming of paintings and
illustrations and cutlery.

Porsche
in Cherry Grove
LIVE REVIEW: ICE PALACE,
CHERRY GROVE, JULY 14, 2018
Somewhere nestled on a barrier
island, in between insanity and
paradise in the microcosm of eternal
sunsets, a voice of many flavors and
colors rang out, and the Ice Palace
suddenly came alive with one of the
most vibrant, talented, creative and
original divas ever to walk the planet:
Porsche.
Porsche, aka Brant Kaiwi, is
celebrating her 13th season at the
world-famous Ice Palace in Cherry
Grove, whose stage has been visited
by Liza Minnelli, Carol Channing, Alan
Cumming and many others. Porsche
is known globally for her flawless
impersonations of everyone from Janis
Joplin to Cher to Billie Holiday, and
everyone in between. She has costarred
on the “Wanda Sykes Show”
as the first drag queen ever to be a
comical sidekick. Known as the Queen
of Key West and often welcomed
internationally, she performs every
song under the sun in her own voice,
accompanied by trusted and magical
DJ Chuck McTague.
Applauding her opening number were
audience celebrities Logan Hardcore
and Brenda Dharling, Ice Palace and
New York City drag royalty, who do
the pool party every Saturday at 3
p.m. Also spotted in the crowd were
celebrity photographer Billy Hess;
renowned hair and makeup designer
Mark De Alwis; Texas queen Ruby
Dickulous; Fire Island icons Viva
Sexx and Nikki Starr; U.K. recording
artist and James Bond of the music
world, Sam Stevens; and Mike Todd,
publisher of Get Out! magazine.
We all watched in awe as Porsche
did a number from the Broadway
hit Chicago as Cher, Judy Garland,
Eartha Kitt, Janis Joplin and Whitney
Houston. That was followed by
appearances from Billie Holiday and
a host of others whom the sold-out,
packed crowd randomly called forth.
Porsche then decided to call a brideto-be
and her wedding party up to
the stage for a wedding rehearsal and
reception. She had the unsuspecting
bride and party dance about the room
and then treated the groom-less bride
to her wedding preview.
The first guest was comedian queen
Ruby Dickulous, straight from Austin,
followed by superstar Sam Stevens
performing a David Bowie cover,
“Let’s Dance.” The suave English
singer, the illegitimate love child of
James Bond and David Bowie, has
been touring New York and the U.K.
and has just released his newest
single, “Tonight,” on iTunes.

The wedding
ended with a
special guest,
none other
than Cher,
with a medley
of hits
(performed
by drag
queen Nikki
Starr). By the
end of the two-hour show, which
seemed to pass in moments, the
entire audience was dancing on
stage along with Porsche. The show
closed with a number from former
Miss Fire Island Viva Sexx.
Porsche’s show was followed by
the famous Spunk Party with host
Honey Davenport. Oozing with sexy
men and dance music, this party will
be happening all season at the Ice
Palace every Saturday night through
September 2 with Daniel and Louis,
the creators.
You can see Porsche at the Ice
Palace every Sunday, Tuesday
and Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Ice
Palace. Her shows are all different,
all engaging, addicting and fun.
She’s a fiery talent, the best of
her entertainment style, and an
addicting force of nature.
Want to check out this great day of
events? Hop on the Sayville Ferry,
which departs hourly throughout the
day. Return on the 11:30 p.m. or 1
a.m. ferry back to the mainland, or
grab a room at the all-new Grove
Hotel, which is celebrating its grand
opening.
Logan Hardcore & Brenda Dharling’s
Famous Pool Show, 3 p.m.
The Porsche Show, 8 p.m.
Spunk 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
Insider tip: While you’re in the hood,
visit the famous Grove Pizza. Slices
Throuples (romantic
and sexual relationships
between three people)
are becoming more
common. I’ve never been
in one, but I can see
lots of advantages and
disadvantages. Based on
the letters you sent in, I’m
not wrong.
I was in a relationship
with my boyfriend for
two years before we
brought in a third.
We’ve all been together
now for a year. For the
last few months our
third and I have been
having sex without the
other. I think I want to
be with just him now,
and he’s thinking the
same thing. Is it wrong
for us to leave our
boyfriend? - Male, Gay,
26
The first thing you need
to do is have all three of
you sit down and discuss
what has been going
on. Part of being in any
relationship is honesty,
and that’s something that
is missing right now. In
your letter you didn’t
THOMAS
TALKS
ABOUT:
mention how you
feel about your other
boyfriend. Have you been
growing apart? Has there
been tension? I’m curious
to know if there are things
that can be adjusted to
keep everyone in the
relationship, and if they
could be, would you
both want to stay? It’s
not “wrong” to want to
end any relationship.
But it’s important to
be thoughtful and
empathetic to the other
person, especially when
they are losing two
people instead of one.
My partner and I are
thinking of bringing in a
third to our relationship.
We’ve talked about it
a little bit, and it just
seems like both of us
are bored and want
something new to spice
it up. We’d prefer for
it to be a monogamous
throuple, but we’re not
sure how to decide if
we should. Thoughts? -
Male, Gay, 33.
It doesn’t sound like
you’re looking for a third
person to be committed
to and equals with;
it sounds like you’re
bored and want to have
threesome. Adding
someone to an already
existing relationship can
be tricky. If you’re having
trouble deciding, maybe
test out the waters a little
bit and have a detailed
THROUPLE TROUBLE
conversation about
rules and what you’d be
looking for in another
boyfriend. All types of
couples have different
rules, so make sure you’re
all on the same page from
the beginning and don’t
jump into anything too
fast.
For three years I’ve
been dating the two
most wonderful men in
the world, and I want
to bring them home
with me to my family’s
lake house to meet
everyone. They know
I’m gay, and they’re
supportive, but they
don’t know I’m dating
two people. How do I
tell them? - Male, Gay,
25
It’s impossible to know
how they will respond.
You could tell them
before going that you’re
dating both people,
or just tell them you’re
bringing people with
you. Then slowly tell
your family that you’re
dating both of them
over the course of your
stay. Hopefully, after
they’ve spent some time
getting to know them,
they will see them as the
wonderful people you do.
There is nothing wrong
with being in a throuple,
but sometimes it can
take people a moment to
adjust, even when they’ve
been supportive in the
past.
