YOUR HACKS
IN THE
NICK OF TIME
Keep calm and put these savvy dos and don’ts to
good use when making last-minute travel plans
WORDS
AKANKSHA NAIR
S
erial procrastinator, busy bee or incredibly spontaneous – whatever the
reason, at some point we’ve all been required to make hasty travel plans.
When done right, these impromptu vacations often make for great stories
full of memorable anecdotes. Even if you have just days (or even hours) to prepare
for your trip, you can still have a well-executed plan in place. We’re enabling the
procrastinator in you this month by listing down tips and tricks for arrangements
made at the eleventh hour.
BE SELECTIVE WITH MOBILE APPS
With millions of apps available for
usage, knowing which one to use and
how to use them can help you save
both time and money on your vacation.
Mobile applications such as Booking.
com offer a collection of great lastminute
deals on hotels for your
destination. On your handphone, just key
in your name, phone number, and email
address, as well as a few details about
travel preferences, including price range,
and preferred amenities. The app
generates a map of nearby hotels
wherein each hotel is ranked based on
how well it fits your preferences, and
comes complete with the application’s
library of reviews. It’s also easier if you
pre-load your credit card information, so
you can book a room with a single click.
KEEP TABS ON OFF-PEAK TRAVEL
PERIODS
A commonly used hack for budget
travel, this one also applies to
impromptu jaunts. Specific days and
times in a week can be unusually
packed and costly. Most office-goers
and business travellers will choose to fly
out on a Friday evening, making it a
particular peak period. Relegate your
last-minute bookings to off-peak times
to get the best deals on accommodation.
The same can be applied to tour
reservations if you choose a time that is
not as in demand.
CONSIDER HOTEL-HOPPING
For heavily booked out destinations,
consider hopping from hotel to hotel to
make the most of the available rooms.
This simple trick can also help you save
on the astronomical costs that come with
high demand. Instead of just hopping
from one hotel to another, you can also
alternate between bed and breakfast
hosts or quirky hostels. Solo travellers, in
particular, can make use of this option to
be more social through their journey. It
can also help you discover different
neighbourhoods within a destination. Use
comparison sites such as booking.com
for accommodation and viator.com for
tours and experiences to get the best
deals on the dates you need.
Tips.
FLY OFF TO THE
UNKNOWN
Searching for a quick
escape but don’t know
what kind of vacation
you want at the moment?
Try Anywhr, a website
which plans out an
entire vacation for you
based on your budget
and expectations. Based
on your needs, the
expert team behind
Anywhr will map out a
safe holiday that is
tailor-made to your
requirements. The best
part is, your destination
will be a surprise!
anywhr.co
IGNORE PROMOTIONAL
EMAILS COMPLETELY
You receive newsletters from
your favourite booking sites for a
good reason: they alert you first with
limited-time offerings before they blast it out
on their social media platforms. Seasonal deals and
promotional offers can also offer substantial
discounts on your last-minute journeys. Staying on
top of those emails can even open you up to offers in
destinations you wouldn’t otherwise think to visit.
But if you’ve already decided on where you want to
go, you can choose to subscribe to local companies
to get the lowdown on the best deals directly from
the source. Occasionally, contacting local companies
(hotels or tours) directly can help you score a slot,
especially if there have been cancellations.
FORGET TO SEEK LOCAL INSIGHT
Seeking out your local contacts in a
destination can help you track trends
you can’t trace online. They can
also help guide you through
your visit, making it easier to
skip on booking tours that
often get fully booked.
Liaising with residents
also enables you to be
a part of unexpected
events and visit
lesser-known
locations at a
destination, giving
your vacation a unique
touch.
DISREGARD LOYALTY
REWARDS
If you label yourself a frequent
traveller and an even more
spontaneous planner, consider becoming
a member of your favourite travel
websites. As a member of their loyalty
programmes, you can get extra discounts
on last-minute trips or even all-inclusive
packages and vouchers. Online travel
companies are known to provide
exclusive discounts to members on
unplanned trips – a reliable way to ensure
that you consistently get the maximum
value from your spur-of-the-moment
bookings.
TALES FROM TWO CITIES
LUCKNOW
HONG KONG
In Scoot’s “Tales from Two Cities”, we ask two writers from
different cities to craft out a travel itinerary for each other,
based on their insights as natives. This month, writers from
Lucknow and Hong Kong switch itineraries for a local
experience like no other
THE GOAL
To immerse in the true Lucknow
experience by bravely walking
around the city’s buzzing
thoroughfares, tasting street
delicacies and mingling with the
locals along the way.
THE ITINERARY
Day 1
• Grab lunch and get your local
retail fix at Aminabad.
• Sample the renowned Tunday
Kebabi, as well as a sweet
dessert from Prakash Kulfi.
• Hop on an open-air rickshaw
ride along Marine Drive before
sunset.
Day 2
• Head to the Bara Imambara
and Chota Imambara and hire a
local guide to show you through
the labyrinthine maze at the
bhool bhulaiya (highest point of
the shrine).
• Try the signature chaat and
biryani while having lunch at
Royal Café.
• Indulge in a ganj (shopping)
session at Hazratganj Market.
Day 3
• Roam around Ambedkar
Memorial Park in Gomti Nagar.
• Check out the local fragrance
store, Sugandh Vyapar, to buy
homegrown perfumes and
incense sticks.
• Have supper and a drink or two
at Sky Bar, Renaissance Lucknow
Hotel’s rooftop bar.
BEYOND TYPICAL ASSUMPTIONS
From what I heard, some of the factors that make Lucknow stand out
from other more prominent cities in India are its retention of
old-fashioned charm and thriving diverse culture. I realised that my
hunches about this northern town were correct and that this trip
surpassed my expectations. Thanks to a well-curated itinerary, I got
to wander off the city’s grid and discover the subtle cultural fabrics
that make up Lucknow.
FOOD TRIP
Food was the first order of
business, so I stopped by this
well-known traditional
restaurant called Tunday
Kababi. I was served their
signature Galawati Kabab,
and was particularly
impressed by the fact that
this dish follows a secret
family recipe which
reportedly involves grilling
and mixing 15 Indian spices.
After lunch, I headed to
Prakash Kulfi for a kulfi, a
creamy and sugary cake with
faluda (jelly). I then capped off
my first night in Lucknow by
riding an open-air rickshaw,
which was the best way to
experience the exciting
dynamics of the city streets.
IN WITH THE NEW AND OLD
Being ruled by Muslims,
Christians and various local
empires throughout history, the
diversity of the city is clearly
evident.
The itinerary suggested that
I troop to the shrines of Bara
Imambara and Chota Imambara
TOP:
Colonial Buildings
in Hazratganj
SCOOT 14 APRIL 2018

FEATURE STORY
on my second day. For only INR100
extra, the licensed tour guide I hired
efficiently showed me around the
buildings’ Persian and Mughal
architecture. Another thing I like about
the tour guides is that they always wait
by the entrance, ready to share tips
and guidelines as you explore the
labyrinthine maze of the buildings.
After visiting the iconic shrines, we
drove towards another favourite local
spot – the Hazratganj Market. The
area boasted stunning British colonial
buildings, a charmingly old post office
and Christian churches. It was
intriguing to witness that most of
these heritage sites are lined with
retail boutiques and stalls that sell a
wide range of products including
local snacks, jewellery, and clothing. I
was also recommended to pop by
Sugandh Vyapar, a family-run store that
sells Indian perfumes and incenses.
It’s the perfect place to get an
ideal souvenir to bring home.
NO GOODBYES
While I loved traipsing
around the busy
streets, interacting
with locals has got to
be my favourite part
of the trip.I would
often ask them, “How
would you
differentiate Lucknow
from other Indian
cities?” Most of them
answered, “Aadaab”, which
directly translates to ‘respect
and politeness’. True enough, this
heartwarming culture is evident
everywhere – a stellar example not just
for the rest of the country, but also for
the rest of the world.
SAY OLA!
Because trains in Lucknow are still under
construction and most cab drivers don’t speak
English, it’s advisable to use the ride-sharing
mobile application Ola to go from one place to
another safely. This homegrown transportation
service is similar to its more famous counterpart,
Uber, but with a local touch.
THE GOAL
To traverse the city’s neighbourhood
spots that are usually not found in
guidebooks, as well as those that
highlight Hong Kong’s history.
THE ITINERARY
Day 1
• Explore Central, an old yet
frenetic business and retail centre.
• Visit PMQ, a recently opened cultural
and creative hub.
• Have dinner at tai pai dong (open-air
eatery) in Stanley Street, Central.
Day 2
• Go on a walking tour by Walk in Hong
Kong, the leading walking tour agent in
the country.
• Head to Hong Kong Park and Flagstaff
House Museum of Tea Ware.
• Visit Wontonmeen, a stylish hostel
which is also a heritage revitalisation
project.
• Explore Yau Ma Tei’s rough
neighbourhood, followed by a hearty
dinner at Temple Street Market.
Day 3
• Go for a morning hike at Dragon Back.
• Try out local snacks in Shau Kei Wan.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Without an itinerary to prompt me, I would never have dared to journey
through a destination as vast as Hong Kong on foot. I had been here once,
and my previous visit was all but a blur of skyscrapers and dim sum as I
whizzed from one tourist spot to another. While that was a remarkable
experience, I haven’t tried or thought about going for guided walks in
Hong Kong – until now.
ART-VENTURE AT CENTRAL
My first day in Hong Kong led
me to walk along the hugely
popular Central area. The graffiti
on the walls of Hollywood Road
was visually arresting, but I was
asked to draw my attention to
the lesser-known indoor stores
exhibiting contemporary
artwork by talented locals. I then
trudged up the steep pathways
of Hollywood Road and headed
to PMQ – a former police
dormitory now turned hipster
artist central. After soaking in my
share of inspiration, I walked
into Meow Café, a cat-themed
cafe-slash-bookstore that serves
Taiwanese sausage burgers.
After 24 hours of idle
wandering, my second day in
Hong Kong consisted of two
packed guided tours – a ghost and
myth tour through Wan Chai in the
morning, and an evening tour
through Kowloon. From the first
tour, I learned about the eerie
ghost stories that hid the secret
rooms of Wan Chai’s reclaimed
historic buildings, and of the
influence of feng shui on local
construction practices. The
evening tour took me through the
dusty lanes of Kowloon onward to
Temple Street. My tour guide even
pointed out the striking yet salient
features of the streets that I
claimed to have seen before.
From banyan trees growing from
the top of old shophouses to a
Cantonese opera theatre, the
stories of Hong Kong’s
tremendous history peeled its
layers before me. We even found
parlour, where the owner crooned a
heartfelt Hey Jude on my request.
The tour concluded atop a parking
lot, where captivating aerial views
of the lower side of Temple Street
can be seen.
DRAGON’S GOT BACK
After strutting around Hong Kong
for two days straight, I have to
admit that a four- to five-hour long
hike (tagged ‘difficult’ on the
tourism board’s website) might not
be the best idea during that time.
But after three strong coffees and
pleasantly sunny weather, the day
propelled me towards undertaking
the Dragon’s Back hike listed on my
itinerary. Every time I thought to
pause along the steep climb or
head back, spectacular views of
the island urged me to carry on. I
began my ascent from the To Tei
Wan bus stop and ended it all the
way to the other side at Shek O
Beach. Before I knew it, I had
completed an 8.5-kilometre hike
along the Dragon’s Back trail all
by myself.
FOND FAREWELL
As I flew out of Hong Kong, I felt a
strange bond connecting me to it,
thanks to an insider who helped me
rediscover the city’s oftenoverlooked
gems. It was like
making a new friend, drawing out
her secrets and understanding how
she came to be the way that she is.
WALK IT OUT
Hailing from diverse professional backgrounds,
all tour guides from Walk in Hong Kong have a
wealth of personal stories to share about the city.
Expect lots of laughs and surprises, as well as
doses of genuinely interesting and relevant pieces
of history to be learned. For solo travellers, in
particular, this is a great way to familiarise
yourself with Hong Kong and befriend fellow
visitors.
PENANG, MALAYSIA
A confluence of eastern and western
influences can be found on the island
of Penang, a product of a mixed
heritage provided by the Chinesemajority
population and its British
colonial past. All this is well-conserved
in the heritage capital of George Town,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When the city was under
development by the British, a grid
as was the custom in British colonies of
As much as the Little Red Dot paints
country’s colourful heritage all around.
Heritage buildings here and there still
Singapore’s pockets of history alive.
One of the first historical places to
stop by is the Peranakan shophouses.
Featuring shophouses painted in
striking pastel hues, these preserved
buildings that still bear original
embellishments and motifs were
popular with Chinese merchants in the
early 1900s. Another iconic spot is the
Dragon Playground in Toa Payoh. The
mosaic-tiled dragon’s head in bright
orange is one of a handful of
playground designs by the Housing
and Development Board that were
popular in the 1980s and 1990s.
If you want to see a retro-style
Singapore town, climb up to the
stunning view of the mustard-coloured
Brutalist-style resident block. The raw
A quick train ride from Osaka will bring
travellers to Japan’s first permanent capital,
Nara. Established in 710 AD as Heijo, the city
was particularly influenced by the strong
Buddhist community then, which saw the
construction of famous temples like Todaiji
Temple and Wakakusa Yamayaki that have
stood the test of time.
Go back a couple of centuries by dropping
by Naramachi, the former merchant district of
Nara. The preserved neighbourhood is a
beautiful snapshot of Japan’s
classical era. Apart from
electrical wires and new
has pretty much stayed
the same since the
Edo Period. Stroll
ATHENS, GREECE
It doesn’t get much older than Athens. As one of the
first cities in the world, this ethereal town in Greece
has continuously been inhabited for more than 3,000
years and has served as the beginning foundations
of western civilisation in 5th century BC.
It only makes sense, then, to begin the journey
back in time at Acropolis of Athens, an ancient
citadel containing buildings of great historical
significance, like the Parthenon, Erechtheum, and
the Propylaea. The journey continues to Anafiotika,
an island beneath the Acropolis.
This charming island is a reflection of Athens from
just a couple of centuries ago when carpenters and
masons from the Cyclades took over the island while
working on turning Athens into a modern metropolis
in the 1840s.
Finally, make a stop at Plaka to experience ‘Old
Athens’. The end of the 19th century has come to a
standstill in this idyllic town filled with neoclassical
architecture. Walk off the beaten track and turn into
quiet alleyways to find a trove of locally-run cafes,
restaurants and more.
DIGGING UP
THE PAST
Spanning from the dawn of man
to British colonial times, the
forgotten history of Perak can be
found in the overlooked regions
around Ipoh
WORDS MARCO FERRARESE
You have probably heard it before: Ipoh’s food
is undeniably phenomenal. However, there is
more to this beguiling town than tummystuffing
material. Once a booming tin mining
settlement at the centre of a lush ravine, Ipoh is a
by-product of the essential histories that
intersected in the Kinta River Valley and its charming
surroundings. Curious? From Ipoh city, ride the bus,
rent a car or hire a cab, and visit these six places to
discover some of Perak’s hidden ghosts.

HAN CHIN PET SOO
Established by the late tycoon Towkay Leong Fee
in 1983, the Han Chin Pet Soo club sits prettily on
the upper end of Jalan Bijeh Timah in Ipoh’s Old
Town. Locals could attest that this former Hakka
Tin Miners Club is a good starting point for those
who wish to dive into this alluring city’s history.
Dubbed as Malaysia’s first Hakka tin mining
museum, Han Chin Pet Soo houses a dedicated
gallery which showcases the lives of the 19th
century immigrant Hakka Chinese tin miners.
Guided tours start on the ground floor where one
can see life-sized figures of the miners at work,
with boards explaining their early history and the
tin extraction process. Upstairs, there is a quirky
reproduction of a way-back-when gambling den,
Heritage site, earning its inscription only after
the unearthing of The Perak Man in 2012, an
11,000-year-old human skeleton found inside the
Gunung Runtuh cave. Scientists believe that The
Perak Man, which was laying in a fetal position
and was surrounded by shells and artefacts, was
revered as a shaman. Besides the burial ritual, his
bones showed a congenital deformity that may
have potentially elevated the Perak Man as a
highly respected member of his tribe.
mining resourcefulness. Like floating factories,
tin dredges sit next to water sources; they
which then passes through an oscillating drum
and a system of screens for extraction. Tanjung
PARKS AND
HAIKOU
RECREATION
Haikou City’s selection of verdant and sprawling
spaces is more than just a walk in the park
WORDS
CHARLES YOUNG
PHOTO PIXABAY.COM
What are some of the things that
first come to mind when you think
of China’s greatest attractions?
Most people would say bamboo forests,
bustling metropolises, and sweeping
mountain ranges. Walking or nature
parks, not so much. Which is why many
will be surprised to know that Haikou
City’s parks are one of its biggest
attractions, backed by its strong laid-back
culture and natural beauty. This green city
has streets lined with a large number of
parks as well as palm trees, golf courses
and even a six-kilometre stretch of
golden sand — all of which have helped
give residents clean air all year round. In
this feature, we zero in on Haikou’s
popular nature and walking spots, and
reveal which is the best one for every
park-goer’s preference.

MEETING LOCALS
An excellent place to start your
Haikou exploration is at People’s
Park. Located right in the centre of the
downtown area, residents go here to relax
and exercise in the early mornings and
evenings. Some groups do tai chi and
other martial art practices, while others
perform classical dance and music. More
commonly these days, you’ll see
youngsters engaging in light aerobic
exercise to modern beats. You can also
take in a circuit of the two pretty lakes just
to the north, where on weekends there’s a
line of stalls next to West Lake that sells
traditional ornate wood carvings.
BASKING IN FLORA AND FAUNA (Left)
For a park that will show you the full range of Hainan’s
plants, head to Golden Bull Park. Located a few
kilometres away from Haixiu Middle Road, this public park
allows you to wander down the winding path of abundant
and varied tropical vegetation. And with over a thousand species of local
plants to look at, you can see dozens of different forest types including a
massive bamboo plantation. Golden Bull Park also features a butterfly
garden, a pigeon enclosure (where you can feed the birds) and a small zoo
on the hill to keep kids amused. For days when it’s scorching hot, don’t
fret; the vast majority of the park has covered walkways and many seats
scattered around the area for you to rest when needed.
Tips.
HAIKOU
NIGHTTIME HISTORIC STROLLS
Although Haikou has seen a lot of modern development in the
last few years, at its heart is Chengdu – a historic area where
age-old architecture, streets and narrow alleys abound. Each
intricately archaic facade was built by former overseas Chinese
merchants who fused Chinese-European elements with Indian and Arabian
touches. Here, you’ll also find Renmin Park and its artistic landscape which
consists of a bonsai garden, two tea houses, a section that feaures kiddie
amusement rides and a Koi pond. While high-end restaurants and gift shops
are within the locale, this spot remains as an avenue for neighbourhood shops
and markets (such as the Dongmen Pedestrian Street) that peddles local food
and handicrafts.
FROLICKING AT THE
BEACH (Below)
The next facet of Haikou to
enjoy is the ocean, and the city bears
not only breathtaking sea views but
also a couple of stretches of golden
sand heading west. Xixi Beach and
Holiday Beach are closest to the
centre and are well-known windsurfing
spots. The latter is the most popular
beach in the city and possesses a slew
of restaurants, as well as barbeque and
drinks stalls. Both beaches are kept
pretty clean, though the proximity of
the port means the water can be a bit
on the murky side. Given the usual heat
of the day, it is recommended to visit
during the afternoon.
STROLLING SAFETY
One thing to watch out for
in Haikou is the motorists’
driving behaviour. While
locals tend to drive
considerably slowly, they
also have a relaxed attitude
to the rules of the road.
either a mini-bus or passenger tricycle,
this nature reserve’s green tropical
the city. There are also several
boardwalks for those who prefer to
explore on foot, and with over 159
species of birds seen frequenting the
DRAMATIC NATURAL LANDSCAPES
Approximately two hours away from the city is Haikou
Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark in Hainan Island.
Encompassing spectacular craters, visitors could hike up
198 meters from the densely forested slope to the viewing
deck located at the highest point of the park. There’s also a large cave
right inside the crater where you can climb down and cool off after a stiff
climb. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, take a stroll around Shishan’s
charming villages such as Rongtang Village (elderly residents can
accompany you for a small fee). The 800-year-old Rufu Stone Pagoda can
also be seen not far from Haikou, with its distinctive tiered tower made
from volcanic rocks. This stone pagoda eventually succumbed to disrepair
over the centuries, but it still makes for a visually-arresting sight.
CLIMATE CHECK
Temperatures in subtropical
Haikou rarely get below 20
degrees even in winter, but the
rainy season (June to October)
can be too humid for liking. For
January and February, thick fog
envelopes the city, so don’t forget
to keep a face mask in handy.
KALIBO
Amid the sound of crashing waves, upbeat music and happy
chatter, the constant creak of a working two-treadle loom can be
heard somewhere in a Kalibo village as a native fabric weaver
produces a piece of piña cloth in quiet diligence. Piña – a Spanish
translation of the pineapple fruit – is the main component of a delicate
handwoven fabric extracted from the fibres of the plant’s leaves. Bold
and elegant, piña-made clothes were traditionally a sign of affluence
during pre-Hispanic times, and were reserved for the Filipino elite. The
use of this pineapple silk has broadened over time, and more recently,
not only Filipinos are donning it.
their wedding
Piña-weaving is recognised as an
ancient practice which originated
from the capital province of Aklan.
The municipality of Kalibo has
since become the primary and
oldest manufacturer, weaver and
exporter of piña cloth to several
parts of the world including North
America and Europe. Its history
also traces back to the 1500s, when
aristocrats in the Philippines
started dressing in it. Thus, it was
dubbed as Queen of Philippine
Fabrics due to it being the
wealthy’s choice of textile.
When the Spaniards first stepped
foot in the country’s soil, they were
instantly smitten with the oriental
intricacy of this homegrown textile.
By the 19th century, piña cloth
became one of the most sought-
after fabric all over the world.
The primitive tradition of
piña-weaving experienced a
dwindle in market sales during the
mid-1980s, eventually ceasing
production because cotton – a
cheaper fabric option – was
introduced and became a strong
competitor in the industry.
Thankfully, local and international
fashion designers are now
continuously reviving the
traditional practice via
incorporating piña silk into their
clothing lines for the past two
decades. Moreover, piña fabric is
no longer exclusively distributed
to high-end boutiques; local
department stores nationwide are
now showcasing piña-made
clothing at reasonable prices.
“Making this
Making this indigenous fabric from scratch
is a laboriously complex five-step process
– one that would require attention to
detail and patience for it to be correctly
executed. The first step is pagkigue,
where mature pineapple leaves are
stripped of their outer coating by scraping
them with a broken piece of china. Two
types of fibre are extracted: bastos (strong
and coarse) and liniwan (fine).
With opaque white threads produced
after the initial step, the next two stages
include the pagpisi and pagpanug ot,
which involve knotting and trimming
individual fibres by hand to create a long,
untangled thread. With the seamless
filament on hand, the yarn is spun onto a
spool during the pagtalinuas stage. The
final step of piña-weaving, known as
paghaboe, consists of entwining the cloth
into an upright loom, ready to be hemmed
and hawed as the maker pleases.
Finished piña threads are often fused
with either polyester or silk and
fashioned into stylish scarves or
garments, such as the beloved Barong
embroidered piña shirt for men is lightweight
and worn untucked, generally over a plain
for the piña-made
Organza barong, a
out of all other barong materials and
has a shiny appearance – perfect for
those who want to stand out from the
crowd. For those who want to save
money but still want a refined and
ideal. This type of barong is softer to
touch and more
opaque than the
Organza, and can
be bought in many
colours and styles.
Keen on getting
something classic? The Piña
Barong is your best bet if you want
to wear something standardly
grand. Meticulously made using
time-honoured Filipino weaving
is worth the investment for anyone
You can’t visit any part of Australia without sinking
uncover where to find noteworthy and unique
versions of this seafood favourite.
WORDS
BRYAN YEONG
Sure, the British might
firmly declare that the
classic fish and chips
dish originates from their home
ground. And while the
combination’s history and
origin cannot be contested,
you also have to admit that
Australia is widely known for
serving up a mean platter of
deep-fried battered fish and
piping hot potato fries. For a
dish that is as rich in history as it
is in flavour, it may be hard for
your taste buds to distinguish
between good, better, and
There’s nothing quite like the good
room for dining within the café
boxes of fish and chips they serve
besides, Manly Beach within
walking distance would make a
more appropriate setting to dig in
anyway. Take your pick between
tempura-battered or grilled hoki,
DON’T GET FLAK FOR EATING FAKE FLAKE
Do yourself and the endangered species of marine life a favour by ensuring that you are only consuming MSC
(Marine Stewardship Council)-approved meat. Some shops might incorrectly generalise their fish as flake, but
Australia has since asserted that ‘flake’ can only be applied to gummy shark or rig, two commonly used types of meat
for fish and chips in Australia. Lend support for sustainable fishing by knowing what goes into your food – ask
questions before ordering to help shape an informed decision, look out for the MSC logo at store outlets, or just opt
for alternative fish options that don’t leverage on endangered species, such as Bream or King George Whiting.
Five elements to guide you through
SCOOT 51 APRIL 2018

Touted as a tropical utopia by most beach-loving holidaymakers, it can be quite
challenging to wrap one’s head around the dizzying wealth of experiences that
Honolulu has to offer. One could even go as far as to say that every element in nature
comes together to make the destination the ultimate escape for travellers. On your next
visit to this sultry destination, try following each of the five elements to discover new facets
of the island. Whether you believe in this theory or not, this trail can be a quirky way to
acquaint yourself with the island’s many fascinating features.
Wood
ELEMENT #1: WOOD
HEAD TO: UNDER THE KOA TREE
Proof that Hawai’i is original in more ways
than one: the island is the only place in
the world where the Koa tree grows. Rare
and indigenous, wood is highly valued
and was once a commodity used only by
the elite in Hawai’i. Today, Koa wood is
used for a wide variety of furniture and
home accessories. Bring home some
beautifully handcrafted products from
Under the Koa Tree, a gallery and gift
shop that specialises in Koa wood
products. These products possess the
uplifting spirit of aloha – an element that
prevails across the Hawaiian Islands.
koatree.com
ELEMENT #2: FIRE
HEAD TO: DIAMOND HEAD
CRATER
This fiery element may be a bit tricky to
incorporate yet somehow Hawai’i
succeeds in more ways than one. This
tropical state is home to both active and
dormant volcanoes – while the former is a
bit risky to visit, the latter makes for quite
the wonder to behold. Take a guided hike
along the cratered surface of Honolulu’s
famous Diamond Head Crater for
breathtaking views spanning Waikiki
Beach and stretching all the way to
Oahu’s south shore.
If you’re not one for adrenalinestoked
thrills, another way to let in this
element's light is to witness the
peaceful Memorial Day lantern-floating
spectacle. Memorial Day is a federal
holiday in the States wherein people
remember those who died while
serving the country’s armed forces.
Head to the Ala Moana beach on 28
May this year to watch this spectacular
event unfold.
ELEMENT #3: WATER
HEAD TO: ISLAND
WATERSPORTS HAWAII
Embrace the water around the island
by taking part in the water sports
available in Honolulu. From surfing and
diving to sailing on a catamaran, you
are guaranteed to have a grand time
here. For something refreshingly
unusual, head to a submarine scooter
tour. The giant helmet provided during
this water activity will help you breathe
underwater and offer a clear view to
watch the marine life. Furthermore, the
while submerged, or even for those
with minor disabilities. Brownie points:
Popularly known as one of the
best destinations to enjoy the
wonders of our planet, Hawai’i
has numerous of topographies for
you to traverse. Make sure to pack
a pair of hiking shoes for your trip
here, and choose from hikes of
varying difficulty levels to kickstart
your mornings. The sights that
await you range from the tallest of
waterfalls to panoramic views of
the island complemented by the
serene sunrise (or sunset) over the
horizon. But if you’re looking to
add a dash of thrills to your
The bird’s-eye view from a
MADE IN CHINA
It used to be a stamp of something cheaply made and massproduced
– but not anymore. We've narrowed down six of
the most notable products made in China and show you best
cities to find them
WORDS
ARA LUNA-RESTON
Six hundred sixty-three cities, approximately
1.4 billion in total population – China is
indeed a lot to take in. While one may take a
lifetime to fully explore this multifaceted country,
digesting China in small doses is enough to
convince you that this widely populous Asian
territory is nothing short of unique. For starters, the
shopping – which is arguably the most favourite
aspect when travelling here – is an experience itself.
Towering commercial shopping centres, and
outdoor night and flea markets all possess a
magnetising, irresistible appeal. Before you splurge
all your moolah on some much-needed retail
therapy, make sure to take home a piece or two of
these classic souvenirs from various towns in the
Land of Dragons and Emperors.
SHOPPING CART
There are two famous
Terracotta Army copy factories in
Xi’an: One is Xi'an Art Ceramics &
Lacquer Factory (near Xi'an Banpo
Museum), and another one is Xi'an
Da Qin Antique Imitation Factory.
While these two sources produce
quality Terracotta Army replicas, be
sure to double-check your items
before leaving the premises, as there
are few cases of dishonest
selling practices.
PHOTO FLICKR RICHARD THOMAS
TERRACOTTA WARRIOR REPLICA - XI’AN
The Terracotta Army is a fascinating clay army of over 8,000
life-size terracotta soldiers and horses, buried underground
over 2,200 years ago, and unearthed in 1974 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
Bringing back a replica of a kneeling archer or an armour-clad general
to display at your living space would be a great conversation starter for
your visitors.
Aside from the fact
that you could buy different
kinds of Chinese teas at
Meijiawu Tea Culture Village,
the picturesque tea plantation
will let you experience the
pleasure of sipping a cup of
the famous dragon well tea
and witnessing actual
tea ceremonies.
LONGJING TEA - HANGZHOU
The difference of Longjing tea (or dragon well tea) from other
green teas is the process; tea leaves are steamed before they
completely dry out in heating pans. In traditional Chinese medicine,
Longjing tea has been used as a stimulant, diuretic (to promote the
excretion of urine), astringent (to control bleeding and help heal wounds)
and to vastly improve heart health.
CHINESE HANDSCROLLS - SUZHOU
Hand-painted scrolls reflect over 3,000 years of
Chinese tradition and heritage. Hanging such
scrolls in your abode is said to bring harmony and clarity
to your surroundings, as well as remind you that
extraordinary beauty is found in the simplest of places or
things.
With over 60 stores extending from the North Palace
Gate entrance, Suzhou Market Street is where you can
find various types of handscrolls in block prints,
embroidery, applique and more. The street design of
this outdoor flea market imitates the ancient style of
shops, making it an Instagram-worthy backdrop.
WHOLESALE ITEMS - GUANGZHOU
Tourists, visitors and individuals who
love to hoard stuff can try shopping in
wholesale markets. You can also score excellent
bargains on single items or small quantities if
you get on the salespeople’s good side.
Guangzhou is a shopper’s paradise where you
can buy inexpensive electronics (Shenzhen),
clothing (Baima Market), computers (Haiyin
Square) and thousands of other products in
small to large quantities. Just don’t forget to
keep a close eye on your valuables to ensure a
fun, hassle-free shopping experience.
From clothes to
bedding sets, find all kinds
of silk fabrics and products at
Ancient Culture Street. You
can also book a tour wherein
you’ll be educated about the
history and production of this
world-renowned
textile product.
SILK - TIANJIN
Legend has it that Lady Hsi-Lin-Shih, a
concubine of the ancient Emperor
Xuanyuan, was having tea under a mulberry tree
when a cocoon fell into her cup. As she watched,
the cocoon spun a robust white thread, thus
discovering that this thread can be woven into
silk. Silk production is a lengthy process that
needs close monitoring, which was why only the
rich were able to afford silk during ancient times.
ART OF THE BARGAIN
Navigate the maze of malls
and markets like a pro with
these helpful haggling tips
Go for it. Local sellers fully
expect customers to haggle,
so don’t feel embarrassed or
guilty to drive a hard bargain.
Have a fixed maximum
price in mind. Otherwise,
you’ll get emotionally
attached and invested in the
negotiating process and may
end up regretting a purchase.
Play it cool. Most locals
may not understand
everything a non-Chinese
speaker is saying, but they’re
experts when reading
reactions. Adopt a ‘take it or
leave it’ attitude to get the
best price.
Always comparisonshop.
If you have time,
scour the area and take
mental notes to get a sense of
how much the item you want
typically costs. This will
largely help your
decision-making process.
PHOTOS FLICKR - INES MASKELL; FLICKR FDECOMITE
CLOISONNÉ - NANJING
A staple in most
Chinese homes,
cloisonné is a product of an
ancient technique for
decorating metalwork objects
with vitreous enamel and inlays
of cut gemstones. Royal families
initially used these carefully
crafted decorative pieces as a
symbol of authority and status,
as well as storage for precious
jewellery and small fittings for
clothes and weapons. Creating
cloisonné ware requires superb
skill and precise artistry, making
it an exciting piece of souvenir
to bring home.
Don’t take it personally.
Some sellers will make a
big show about pretending
to be insulted when you
don’t buy from them —
don’t feel bad, it’s all part of
the game. Just walk away
when you think an item isn’t
worth the money.
Be spoilt for choice
at Hunan Lu. Located
right inside the Xuanwu
Gate, this massive
market is one of the best
places to buy these
colourful ornaments.
BALI
FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE
TRAVEL JOURNAL
Understanding why Bali earned its moniker
Island of the Gods is easy. Aside from its
well-loved beaches, the island’s
breathtaking volcanoes and hillside temples add
to Bali’s ethereal magnetism. Everything you see
on the island possesses a spiritual meaning. While
Kuta pleases those who seek a concentration of
bustling commercial hubs, others pursue the
mountain life, look for divine intervention, and
pray for inner peace. For me, I come here to surf.
Heading north from the busier hubs of Kuta,
Legian and Seminyak, the seaside villages that
make up the area of Canggu are no longer a
hidden secret. Exuding its famed laid-back surfing
culture, the string of black-sand beaches covering
Berawa, Batu Bolong, Batu Mejan (nicknamed
Echo Beach), Old Mans and Pererenan all draw
keen attention from those in pursuit of an endless
summer. Canggu has become a favourite haunt
amongst both international and local crowds
because there is a beach or reef break for every
type of surfer. For those who just like to watch, the
combination of exciting surf spots and
neighbouring rice paddies make for a chill
village-place to hang.
With cranking waves on offer at Echo Beach,
there is no shortage of surf schools that promise
to help conquer your first wave. Beach
photographers also stand by to catch some
action, while drones fly high to capture you in a
different light.
TRAVEL JOURNAL
Onshore, golden sunsets and local ambience drench the
sweeping seascapes of chic bars and clubs. ‘Live’ music drifts
out over the many dining choices, ranging from local warungs
(small family-owned store) to more stylish options such as
Finns Beach Club in Berawa Beach. Sun-kissed bodies sprawl
out on the sand in bean bags, lie on grass-fronted areas, and
bob up and down in rooftop pools that appear to fuse
together with the seafoam.
Spending a considerable amount of time in Canggu will
make you understand how it is more of a state of mind than a
place. Here, life is all about the ocean. It is also about good
food when you emerge from a surfing session, a relaxing
massage to soothe sore muscles, a touch of yoga to find your
balance, and cool cocktails sipped watching the sunset.
Moreover, it is where your mind slows, and your skin tone
darkens, as well as where days can quickly wash into weeks or
even months.
While there are no real shopping centres here, there is a
good selection of surf stores, board shops, and trendy
fashion boutiques that allow you to whittle away hours as
you please. So if you have bypassed Bali in the past,
perhaps all it takes is looking at it from a different angle.
TWO NEW CITIES
ON THE RADAR
Scoot gives you more reasons to
fly by adding in Nanchang and
Pekanbaru to our ever-growing
network of destinations.
A major railway hub connecting
eastern and southern China, Nanchang
will be our 20th destination in Greater
China, which accounts for over 110 of
our weekly services and covers almost
a third of our global network.
Additionally, Pekanbaru will join Bali
(Denpasar), Jakarta, Palembang and
Surabaya as part of our Indonesia
network, which accounts for over 50
services per week.
Even as Scoot grows its long-haul
network with Athens and Honolulu
having been launched in the past nine
months, the airline will continue to
strengthen its regional network to serve
more guests across Asia.
With these two new additions, our
network will now span 66 destinations
across 18 countries and territories, serviced
by a fleet of 16 Boeing 787 Dreamliners
and 24 Airbus A320 family aircraft, with four
more Boeing 787 Dreamliners and
39 Airbus A320neo aircraft on order.
Ticket sales to Nanchang are now
available for booking. Flying thrice
weekly, Singapore-Nanchang flights are
scheduled to commence on 2 July 2018
and will be operated with Scoot’s A320
aircraft. Sale of our Pekanbaru service will
commence in the second quarter of 2018.
RUNWAY REPORT
FUN FACT
I love bubble tea, and I
always opt for the highest
sugar level. Why live life at
20%, when it could be a
hundred?
TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO IN SCOOT.
My mission is to show everyone how culturally sexy India is!
WHAT DID YOU DO AS AN AMBASSADOR IN BANGALORE?
While we were on-ground promoting our Scoot Brand in India, we
introduced our products, as well as our destinations beyond Singapore.
Also, we brought over a virtual reality (VR) experience for guests to try the
Scoot Dreamliner Experience.
WERE THERE ANY EXCITING HAPPENINGS AT THE EVENT?
A lot! Our event space got hijacked by a group of dancers, and I got
pranked by a group of guys. They seemed so interested in knowing more
about Scoot; little did I know, they were secretly filming me. One even did a
somersault backwards and wagged a finger at me and said, ‘You’re on
camera!’ There’s never a dull moment in India, indeed.
Goh Calyn
FUN FACT
I love Korean cuisine and
even attended Korean classes.
However, I have never
watched a single episode of a
Korean drama yet in spite
having visited
the country a few times.
TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO IN SCOOT.
Numbers are what I deal with most of the time at work. My daily tasks
include setting the ideal fares for our Scoot flights to ensure profitability
and analysing a large volume of data and figures. All the promotional
tickets come from us, so do keep your eyes peeled!
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT WHICH HAPPENED
AT SCOOT FOR YOU?
Our 50 millionth passenger event which happened in March 2017! We
were all very excited (and anxious) as we waited and attempted to spot
our 50 millionth passenger at the check-in counter. I had just joined Scoot
for a little over a week at that time, which makes it even more memorable
for me because I had the opportunity to witness that momentous event
first-hand!
WERE THERE ANY EXCITING HAPPENINGS AT THE EVENT?
Tons of people were intrigued by our virtual reality (VR) experience, and
we saw a lot of children getting very excited about it. People there were
very fun and sporty, as well!
Michelle Teo
Assistant Manager,
FUN FACT
I’ve been dancing and
performing (sometimes
teaching) Salsa for about
12 years now. Also, I
believe that unicorns and
mermaids are real.
TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO IN SCOOT.
I inspire people from all around the world to travel via Scoot through the
creation and curation of engaging content on our social media platforms.
In fact, I’ve already appeared in four Scoot videos online!
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU’RE SUITABLE TO BE AN AMBASSADOR?
I am friendly and easy to talk to! I do know quite a fair bit about our brand,
destinations and products, so I am always able to explain these details to
our guests efficiently.
WERE THERE ANY EXCITING HAPPENINGS AT THE EVENT?
We played music at the booth, while some kids decided to dance in the
space outside it. It tripled the fun factor of the event because that drew
attention to the area.
AIGNER – Luxury made in Germany
Luxury, trend and fashion zeitgeist – Since 1965, AIGNER
represents craftsmanship, the highest quality and timeless
design. AIGNER’s core competencies lie with leather bags and
accessories. Every season, the design team led by Creative
Director Christian Beck creates bags for fashion lovers. The label
also has set foot on the international fashion weeks: twice a year
to present its newest fashion and leather designs in Milan.
AIGNER’s vision is directed to the future while proudly
looking back on a rich history. Back in the 1930’s when
the Hungarian-born Etienne Aigner celebrated his first
success at the Haute Couture shows in Paris. No one
could have guessed it would be his first step towards
establishing one of the most famous lifestyle and luxury labels
of today.
What persisted throughout time is the devotion to luxury,
the love for the product itself and of course, the internationally
infamous horseshoe logo. Until today, the evolution of the
brand is marked by flexibility and steady expansion of its DNA
in combination with fashion zeitgeist. AIGNER remains faithful
to its values and principles by creating timeless products while
SCOOT 79 APRIL 2018

RUNWAY REPORT
YOUR SAFETY & COMFORT
SAFETY FIRST. NO COMPROMISE
Your safety is our number-one priority, but you have a part to play too. The
cabin crew’s safety briefing and the safety information card in your seat pocket
provide crucial details in the unlikely event of an emergency. Always pay
attention to these details on each flight you take because information can
vary, such as the location of emergency exits and equipment. If in doubt about
anything safety-related, ask. Our crew are specially trained to ensure your
safety at all times. Regardless of the situation, safety must never be
compromised, so follow the crew’s safety instructions at all times. It is an
offence to refuse to obey any lawful command of the captain or cabin crew.
KEEP
MOVING
Maintaining good
blood circulation
and muscle
relaxation goes a
long way towards
avoiding Deep Vein
Thrombosis (DVT),
a painful condition
that arises when a
clot obstructs
blood flow in a vein.
Though it’s a rare
occurrence, don’t
take any chances,
especially during
long flights. During
your flight, move
your legs and feet
for a few minutes
every hour. Stand
up and stretch your
arms and chest.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC
DEVICES
You may use your lightweight portable
electronic devices (“Flight Safe” mode
on A320 /”Transmitting” mode on B787)
unless advised by crew. Personal headphones
or earphones must be unplugged
and not in use when the aircraft is taxiing,
taking off and landing. Laptops may not be
used and must be properly stowed when
the aircraft is taking off, landing and on
the ground. If you’re boarding or disembarking
the aircraft on the tarmac, you must
switch off your devices. At any point of the
flight, the captain or cabin crew may advise
you to turn off your devices.
STAY HYDRATED
Low humidity in the cabin
can cause your body to
dehydrate. Drink lots of
non-alcoholic beverages
during your flight and apply
moisturiser liberally to
combat dryness. Consume alcohol in
moderation while on board as high altitude
intensifies its effects. The consumption of
any alcoholic beverage not purchased from
the inflight menu is not permitted.
SCOOT SECURITY POLICY
Scoot reserves the right to deny boarding to
passengers who are inappropriate on board or
on the ground with their comments or behaviour.
DON’T SMOKE
Scoot enforces a strict no-smoking policy on
all its flights, which also prohibits the use of
e-cigarettes. Please refrain from lighting up in
the lavatories, as doing so could endanger the
safety of your fellow guests or disrupt the flight.
CABIN PRESSURE
Changes in cabin pressure during
the flight may cause discomfort in
the ears. Relieve ear pain by
swallowing hard, holding your
nose and gently breathing out
with your mouth closed. If
travelling with toddlers or infants,
give them a sweet or feed them a
snack when cabin pressure rises,
particularly during take-off.
CABIN CLEANLINESS
Please do not place rubbish or other
discarded items in your seat pocket or
on the floor. Trash bins and napkins are
located in the lavatories. Unless you have
strict dietary requirements not catered for
on board our flights, please refrain from
bringing outside food and beverages into
the aircraft. We have a delicious array of
meals and snacks on offer, including
tempting vegetarian and halal options.
