NEWSLETTER 07/18

Welcome back to all our learners and 

staff after a well-deserved holiday. 

Several of our learners represented 

our school either overseas or at home 

in a number of activities. I extend a 

word of thanks to all the learners and 

staff who represented our school in 

an exemplary manner and proved to 

be true ambassadors of our school 

and community. We are at the 

beginning of yet another jam-packed 

term filled with lots of activities and 

opportunities to excel and perform. I 

would again like to encourage all our 

learners to take part in our school

activities and help us 

fulfil our dream of being a 

school of excellence. 

Discipline and a neat 

appearance are the 

cornerstones of our 

school. I urge you to 

make sure that your 

child wears the correct 

school uniform and that 

the uniform is neat and 

tidy. Sport attire may not 

be mixed with the school 

uniform. Discipline starts 

as soon as your child 

arrives at school, and 

as such I am concerned 

about the number of 

learners still arriving late 

at school. School starts 

promptly at 07:45 in the 

morning and I expect 

of all learners to be at 

school before then. In the 

future, we will be taking 

strong action against latecomers 

at school. 

During the upcoming 

weeks we will engage 

with you as parents 

through a number of 

very important meetings 

regarding matters of 

mutual concern. I call on 

you as parents to please 

attend these meetings 

and to share your 

thoughts and ideas with 

us. As stakeholders of 

our school I perceive your 

input as paramount in the 

success of our school in 

years to come. Invitations 

and letters regarding 

these meetings will be 

sent out in due course. 

During the past week 

we celebrated the 

centenary birthday of 

Madiba. As a school, 

we would also like 

to add our voice to 

those of the millions 

of South Africans who 

are constructively and 

positively building the 

South Africa Madiba 

dreamt of. Let us work 

and build together.

learners and parents all

HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS 

After the 

successful 

completion of 

the exams and a 3 week 

long holiday, I trust that 

you are all well-rested 

and ready for term 3. 

It is a misconception to 

presume that one term is 

less busy than another. 

Every term has its own 

unique challenges and 

term 3 is no exception. 

Reports going out, 

Parents’ evening, Grade 

9 subject choices, rugby 

play-offs, soccer, cricket, 

the pantomime, prefect 

elections, matric farewell 

and the preliminary 

examinations are only 

a few highlights which 

from part of our school’s 

heartbeat. 

This term is crucially 

important for our 

matriculants as 

they are finalising 

their portfolios 

and silabusses. 

A warm word of 

thanks to our staff 

and learners at 

the completion of 

the winter school. 

“If you work hard 

during winter, the 

harvest will be 

great in summer”. 

The rest of the 

school can now 

fix the mistakes 

they made in 

previous terms. 

Curro has informed us 

that there will be no 

common papers in the 

third term. In reaction to 

this message, we have 

adapted our assessment 

programmes. A 

letter explaining the 

particulars, as well as 

a new assessment 

programme, was sent 

out at the end of term 2. 

All necessary changes 

were carefully made 

in the learners’ school 

diaries during the first 

register period of the 

new term. The new 

arrangements were also 

broadly discussed during 

school assembly. 

Although we have 

already congratulated 

these learners on 

their outstanding 

achievements, 

we would like to 

compliment the following 

learners who held our 

school’s name high 

as Curro Roodeplaat 

amabassadors during 

their recently completed 

tours:

THE PRIMARY SCENE 

Welcome back to 

all our parents 

and learners! I 

trust that you and your 

family rested well and are 

ready for the activities and 

challenges of term 3! 

who attended the parent’s 

consultation evening on 

Thursday, 19 July. It is 

important to make use of 

this opportunity to discuss 

your child’s progress with 

the respective teachers. 

Our u.11 and u.13 cricket 

teams went to Camp 

Discovery during the first 

week of the holiday to 

sharpen and practise their 

skills in preparation for the 

coming cricket league. 

We are extremely proud 

of Jacques Mouton 

who played Pinocchio 

at the Irene Children’s 

Theatre during the past 

holiday. Congratulations 

to Haylee Duarte who 

has qualified for the 

Gauteng North Equestrian 

A team. Proudly Curro 

Roodeplaat. 

The short, but busy term 

starts in full swing. Our 

cross country, hockey, 

cricket, soccer and tennis 

will start with matches in 

due time. Find the match 

dates under “Important 

dates” elsewhere in the 

newsletter.

attend the meeting, you 

are still welcome to make 

an appointment with the 

subject teachers. 

Sponsor forms for our 

yearly soapbox have 

already been handed out 

to you child. Thank you 

in advance for the funds 

that will be raised during 

this term. The competition 

between the classes 

run high every year and 

learners are looking 

forward to the weekly 

announcement of the 

frontrunners! The soapbox 

funds are used towards 

the improvement of our 

premises. 

We will be hosting the 

quarterly full day educator 

training on Saturday, 4 

August. Approximately 

180 Curro educators in 

our region will attend this 

training.

Rashelle Duarte, Shakeira Lee Davey en 

Sulize Hillocks participated on level 0 and 

qualify for the Newcomers Challenge that 

will be held with the Nationals in October. 

Cricket tour 

Curro STEAM(D) expo 

On Wednesday, 20 June our 

Roodie learners took part in the 

Curro STEAM(D) day, which 

took place at Woodhill College. 

Our learners performed 

extremely well and we are 

particularly proud of the 

following results: 

1. Haylee Duarte achieved 

first place for her Natural 

Science PBL and came sixth 

in the Robotics competition. 

2. Anton Stefan Biehler 

achieved first place for his 

Geography PBL. 

3. Neo Roberston achieved 

second place for his 

Geography PBL. 

4. Jacques Mouton won the 

Rubik’s Cube challenge in a 

time of 52 seconds. 

5. Jason Houy achieved 

third place in the Robotics 

competition. 

Learners also entered 

artworks for the I Love Maps 

international competition. 

These artworks have been sent 

to Cape Town to be displayed, 

along with the entries from 

other Curro schools, in the 

Cape Town city hall. The 

following outstanding results 

were achieved: 

1. Nea Höll: Gold 

2. Riani Pretorious: Gold 

3. Rashelle Duarte: Bronze 

4. Chanté Herion: Gold and 

winner in Grade 3 

5. Enya Pretorius: Silver 

On 22 June the u.11 and u.13 cricket teams went to Camp Discovery to work on 

their cricket skills and play pre-season matches. 

On arrival the boys were taken on a game drive which they have enjoyed 

tremendously. During the course of the four days they played matches daily and had 

training sessions in the cricket nets.

Curro Castle 

What an amazing holiday! It is, however, so much fun to have all our little 

ones back at school. They have all grown bigger. Mommy looks very 

happy that school has re-started. Welcome to all of you! 

We have planned activities worth looking forward to. Our exciting athletics meeting 

on Friday 7 September can already be diarised. As in the past we are certain that 

records will be broken! We know how long in advance a visit from grandpa and 

granny is normally planned and we would like to urge you to diarise Grandpa and 

grandma day on Friday, 26 October (fourth term). The police is coming to visit us, we 

have a puppet show and an educational show where we will be taught more about the 

exit out of Egypt. Definitely something to look forward to! 

A special word of welcome to teacher Lorraine Moya. She was the successful 

candidate for the Group 5 English (Lion class) position. We are very happy to have 

her as part of our Castle family and are looking forward to a wonderful road lying 

ahead with her on board. 

Please remember to send us any old high heel shoes, ties, handbags, princess 

dresses or books. 

Our toddlers can play for hours pretending they are mommy or daddy. 

Enjoy the term with us.
