Ohio Offers Tax Free Weekend Families won't pay sales tax on certain supplies during the first weekend in <strong>August</strong> after Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed a permanent sales tax holiday into law last spring. This year, the tax-free weekend will be Aug. 3 through Aug. 5. Items that qualify for the tax break include clothing up to $75 each and school supplies up to $20 each purchased in Ohio or online. Ohio has offered tax-free weekends in <strong>August</strong> since 2015, but lawmakers recently made the tax break permanent. In the first year, Ohioans saved about $3.3 million in taxes on purchases totaling nearly $47 million, according to University of Cincinnati's Economics Center. A family purchasing $500 in supplies could save about $35 in Hamilton County, which has a sales tax rate of 7 percent. Ohio lost out on that money but collected an additional $4.7 million on items that people purchased above and beyond what was tax-free, UC's analysis found. Counties such as Hamilton that border other states saw a bigger bump in taxes collected that weekend, too. "It’s been very, very popular,” said Rep. A Decade in the Making Congratulations to Matt Brown who recently celebrated 10 years of employment with Walmart. Matt holds a position in guest services at the Lancaster, Ohio store and said he likes the people he works with, as well as his job. He also is very proud of his new employee badge which communicates his decade of service to every customer.
