22 x August 2 — 15, 2018 x The 38th National Veterans Wheelchair Games began July 29 and continue through Aug. 4. The event is the world’s largest annual wheelchair sports program, empowering veterans with spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, amputations and other neurological injuries to live more active and healthy lives through wheelchair sports and recreation. Together with Veterans Affairs, Paralyzed Veterans of America is copresenting the games in the hopes to help paralyzed veterans find independence and a new-found quality of life. PVA programs, including Give (Goods Inspiring Veterans Everywhere) and Wheels Helping Warriors, help fund PVA initiatives such as adaptive sports programs that help paralyzed veterans exercise their competitive spirit. These programs also help to ensure paralyzed veterans and their families get the benefits they have earned through service, spinal cord injury and disease research, and more. Storm Select 14-U qualified nationally by competing and winning a number of tournaments this summer that are considered “qualifiers.” Teams must then be invited to participate in the event. Only 16 teams qualified nationally and were invited to participate from across the nation. The young women who have worked so hard this year are representing themselves, their team, Storm Select and Florida in Delaware from Aug. 2 through Aug. 5 in the U.S. Lacrosse Nationals. Storm Select Lacrosse is a nationally recognized girls lacrosse club based in Orlando/ Windermere. The XL National Soccer Team holds the San Marino Cup, where 2,500 players gather for an international soccer tournament. Southwest residents Chayce Destouche, John Paul Dishinger and Ethan Wilson competed in the San Marino Cup, an international soccer tournament for the XL National Soccer Team. The San Marino Cup hosts 2,500 participants from 100 countries and all five continents. San Marino is an independent republic located in northeast Italy. Teams competed on 13 fields in and around San Marino.
