MetroWest resident Victoria Mei returned to London’s West End this summer to take part in West End Stage, the United Kingdom’s premier theater summer school for young, aspiring thespians ages 8-21. The 11-year-old once again performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the heart of the West End, home to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. During the 2017-18 school year, Victoria was cast as Mary Poppins in Winter Garden’s Acting Up Theatre Academy’s Mary Poppins Jr. It was her first starring role. She has attended West End Stage for the past two years and was joined this year by her friends, Emma Lawrence, Anne Marie and Kiley Lynch, and Anastasia and Parker Sims. The girls were put through their paces in singing, dancing and drama, as well as received specific industry-based workshops led by West End stars. Students also viewed the hit West End musical School of Rock and afterward had the opportunity to question the cast during a private question-and-answer session. Some of the cast members also led a master class. n Ocoee IN YOURNEIGHBORHOOD After an intensive one-week “summer camp” at the Electronics Arts Tiburon studio, 10 female coders from local high schools graduated from EA’s new Get in the Game educational program designed compiled by Lauren Salinero to showcase the applications of STEAM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math — in video game development. Among the 10 girls was Ocoee resident Bryanna Pajotte, who attends Edgewater High School. Bryanna and the other participants worked alongside creators of EA Sports Madden NFL and NBA Live and were given a view into what goes into making leading video games today. They were granted exclusive access to EA’s proprietary technology and tools, operated professional 3-D animation software, visited a recording studio, participated in a playtesting session, and more. opportunities at EA. Contingent on high school graduation and completion of relevant college courses, each of the girls was guaranteed an internship interview in hopes she might someday pursue career opportunities with EA. n Phillips Landing Phillips Landing resident Ryan Houston earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 84. Ryan’s Eagle project was building picnic tables for Palm Lake Elementary School. He celebrated his achievement with fellow Eagle Scouts at his Eagle Court of Honor. The award is given to the student who has shown outstanding achievement in the behind-the-scenes work that is integral to any theater production. Katia exemplifies hard work and dedication to the craft of technical theater. The honor was presented to her at an end-ofthe-year awards ceremony.
