Tapestry of Voices was cofounded by Lainie Senechal, Amesbury’s Community first Poet Laureate, poet, painter Connections and environmentalist, and Harris Gardner, much-published poet and recipient of the Ibbetson Street Life Time Achievement Award in 2015. Together they have partnered with the Whittier Home to present such literary luminaries as Rhina P. Espaillat, Alfred Nicol and many others reading the poetry of Whittier as well as their own works. This year’s readings will celebrate not only the 20th anniversary of the event, but also Amesbury’s 350th Business birthday. This event is free and Spotlight open to the public with light refreshments provided after the reading. The Whittier Home and Museum is a welcoming and exciting place to visit! Sale ------------------------------------------------------------ IPSWICH - The Ipswich Public Library is pleased to announce a new service to the community with the installation of a new charging station for portable electronic devices. The station is located in the Reference Room on the first floor of the Library, Sports • and has 8 cables that Sports • are compatible with various handheld devices such as iPads, iPhones, and Android phones. The charging Sports station is free for public use whenever the Library is open. The Library’s charging station was funded with donations from Small Wonders Child Development Center, and Cuvilly Arts and Earth Center. Both organizations are located in Ipswich and the Library is grateful for their generosity. ------------------------------------------------------------ Pets, Animals, Plus MERRIMAC - On Friday, August 10th, as a part of Merrimac’s Old Home Days, the Friends of the Merrimac Public Library will present Rita Parisi of Waterfall Productions, your hostess for a “Summertime Tea” in the Library at 6:30 PM. At the turn of the century people would spend much Health & Fitness of their summers enjoying popular beachside resorts. They would stroll along the promenades, enjoy amusements such as ballroom dancing, bandstand music, circuses, and moving pictures. Rita , as the character, Mrs. Gordon, will give you a firsthand account of what it was like to spend a day at the beach in 1908. Seating is limited, please arrive early. Light refreshments will be served. ------------------------------------------------------------ NEWBURYPORT - Officials at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge have announced that a portion of the refuge beach have reopened to the public. Specifically, the portion of the beach beginning at boardwalk 6 and extending south to the boundary with Sandy Point State Reservation, will be open to public access. The portion of the refuge beach accessible via boardwalk 1 remains open, as it has been all summer. All other areas of the refuge beach will remain closed until further notice. The reopening of sections of the refuge beach also means that walk-on night fishing will once again be permitted – limited to those areas of the beach that are open to the public. The night fishing permits, which have been available since July 1st, may be obtained at either the refuge entrance station or at the headquarters during normal business hours (M-F, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). Most of the refuge beach is closed every April 1st due to the presence of breeding piping plovers, a federally protected species. Typically, in late summer, as the plover chicks fledge (or are able to fly), the beach gradually reopens. For the latest about the beach status, readers are directed to the refuge’s Facebook page. ------------------------------------------------------------ NEWBURYPORT - Theater in the Open will present its FREE outdoor theater festival at Maudslay State Park the weekend of August 18-19 putting on four full productions in two days. The Theater in the Open Festival rounds out TITO’s 39th summer season with performances of each spring and summer show produced so far this year. On Saturday, Family Hour in the Open is at 11am and A Jack and the Beanstalk Panto! is at 2pm. Sunday Much Ado About Nothing is performed at 1pm and Medea at 5pm. The productions will feature over twenty local actors, and five local directors, including Artistic Director of Theater in the Open, Edward Speck. “After last year’s success — bringing over 600 people into the Park — we couldn’t be more excited to put on the Festival again this year,” says Speck, “having so many people enjoy both our art and the beautiful state park all at once is so gratifying. But what really stood out to us last year was the range of audience interest. We had children who came out and enjoyed watching Shakespeare, or who saw Antigone for the first time, and adults who howled with laughter watching Family Hour in the Open. We also had a lot of visitors from outside of our immediate area who came to see a TITO production for the first time.” Family Hour is Theater in the Open’s monthly performance of singing, storytelling, and bubbles aimed at children and families. Put on by TITO’s Company, Family Hour is a perfect introduction to Theater in the Open for young audiences. A Jack and the Beanstalk Panto! builds on the themes and storyline from the popular folk tale, Jack and the Beanstalk. Directors Edward Speck and Josh Shack have created a comedic adventure for Jack and Jill that will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. William Shakespeare’s classic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing is a remount of TITO’s 1997 version, also directed by Bonniejean Wilbur. Much Ado is the story of love, mistaken identity, and family honor. Much Ado About Nothing is appropriate for audiences of all ages. Finally, Euripides’ tragedy Medea is a chilling account of a mother pushed beyond the limit of suffering, exacting revenge in the only way she can. Medea is directed by Stephen Haley, and features Newburyport actors Sierra Gitlin and Edward Speck as Medea and Jason. Medea may not be appropriate for young audiences, for more information call Theater in the Open’s office at 978-465-2572. The Theater in the Open Festival is free and open to the public. Theater in the Open is supported by generous grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and from local cultural councils. Parking is at the Maudslay State Park lot (DCR parking rates are $5 for MA plates, and $10 for out of state). Allow for a brief walk to the performance sites. The Merrimack Valley Skating Club will hold classes on Sunday from 4-4:50pm and Thursday from 6-6:50pm. Classes begin the week of September 9th. Specialized and fun Learn to Skate USA classes focus on the basic fundamentals that are important for shaping both hockey and figure skating skill development. Learn to Skate USA is endorsed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US Speed Skating. Skaters have the chance to earn skill-badges throughout the series. Student to coach ratio is kept low and classes are available for skaters age 3 through adult. Classes run as 7-week sessions continuously throughout the year. The Merrimack Valley Skating Club is a non-profit organization that was established in 2005.
