The activities below correspond to copymasters on pages 27–29.<br />
Hard and soft ‘c’ and ‘g’<br />
Materials<br />
• copies of pages 27–28<br />
• scissors<br />
1. Begin by focusing on the letter c.<br />
2. Ask the pupils to tell the sounds c can make.<br />
3. Review the concept of hard ‘c’ and soft ‘c’.<br />
4. Repeat with the letter g.<br />
5. Explain that there are a few simple rules that can help with identifying which sound the letters make.<br />
When g is followed by a, i, o or u, it usually makes the hard sound.<br />
When g is followed by e or y, it usually makes the soft sound.<br />
When c is followed by a, o or u, it usually makes the hard sound.<br />
When c is followed by e, i or y, it usually makes the soft sound.<br />
6. Instruct the pupils to keep these rules in mind as they complete the activity on page 27.<br />
7. To assemble the game, photocopy the pages. Cut up the word cards. Cut slits on the dotted lines on<br />
page 27.<br />
8. To play, a pupil places the word cards in the slits below the corresponding headings.<br />

Viewing sample<br />
1. Review syllables with the pupils by having them identify the number of parts or beats in a word.<br />
2. Explain that they can clap or tap the number of beats to determine the number of syllables.<br />
3. Have the pupils continue syllable practice by completing page 29.<br />
