En gripande resa i tid och rum om den franska koloniseringens
arv i Vietnam. / A moving journey in time and space about the
legacy of the French colonisation of Vietnam.
Avstånd föder lögner, oavsett om det
är historiskt eller geografiskt. Saigon är
namnet på en vietnamesisk restaurang
i Paris trettonde arrondissement. Det är
också det före detta namnet på staden
Hô Chi Minh City, även om alla fortfarande
insisterar på att kalla staden just Saigon.
När man hör namnet Saigon är det lätt att
man föreställer sig tropiska krigsbilder.
Vietnamkriget har skildrats omfattande i
populärkulturen, vilket dolt det kollektiva
minnet av kolonialismen och det franska
misslyckandet 1956. Det är just denna
förträngda period och dess våldsamma
konsekvenser som SAIGON utforskar.
Caroline Guiela Nguyen, dotter till en
vietnamesisk immigrant, utgår i sitt arbete
från andra generationens funderingar.
Pjäsen är inte en direkt anklagelse mot
kolonialismens brott utan snarare en
undersökning av allt som lämnats osagt,
och mytbildningen som skapats
i efterhand.
Distance, whether it be historical or
geographical, is a breeding ground of lies.
Saigon is the name of a Vietnamese
restaurant in the 13th district of Paris, as
well as the former name of Hô Chi Minh
City, which everyone still insists on calling
Saigon. Imagining Saigon one might think
of tropical images of war. The Vietnam War
has been extensively portrayed by pop
culture which has concealed the collective
memory of colonialism and the French
debacle. It is this repressed episode and
its consequences that explored in SAIGON.
As the daughter of a Vietnamese immigrant,
Caroline Guiela Nguyen examines
the reflections of the second generation.
Rather than an indictment of colonisation,
the play is an examination of things
left unsaid.
