Drivers’ Education at COTA: 2018 HPDE By By Wade Ledbetter photos by Andrew Barber As Porsche owners, PCA gives us the unique opportunity through the High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) program to take our cars out to a track and drive them how they were meant to be driven. We’re blessed with a number of great tracks within a day’s drive of the Maverick Region. Our own “home” track at MotorSport Ranch (MSR) in Cresson is an excellent place to develop and hone your skills. The crown jewel of road course tracks in the area, however, is undoubtedly Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, TX. I have driven HPDE events with PCA for a little over a year, all of them at MSR Cresson. This was my first opportunity to take my car and skills to COTA. I had heard the track was very fast. What I did not understand before driving it, was how deceivingly fast it is. With a wide path and huge run-off areas designed for Formula 1 speeds, the perception of speed is much different than what we see at all the other tracks in the area. It took a bit of adjustment to get the feel for the cornering speeds on such a different track. One of the great advantages of HPDE events, and PCA in general, is the ability to socialize with other PCA members around a common interest: the love for great cars and driving enjoyment. It’s a natural bond, regardless of background or career path. Prior to this event, I posted on our Maverick Facebook page that I was looking for someone to take my track tires down to COTA. One of our fellow members, Arthur Greenstein, was making his first trip ever to an HPDE event and offered to help me out. That led to a great opportunity to socialize and share experiences over the course of the weekend, and we’ve talked several times since. He’s now hooked on HPDE just like me! 30 August fully INSTRUCTED Porsche Club of America DRIVER EDUCATION at CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS! open to drivers Beginner through advanced AUSTINSCHNELLFEST.CLUBREGISTRATION.NET AUSTIN - 3-DAY EVENT FOR ALL RUN GROUPS - RUN GROUPS LIMITED TO 50 CARS MAX - DRIVERS LOUNGE WITH REFRESHMENTS - NEW LOWER PRICE ON GARAGES REGISTRATION OPENS JULY 20 AT NOON CLUBREGISTRATION.NET FOR SEPTEMBER 7-9 SCHNELL FEST SEPTEMBER 7-9 2018 DRIVER EDUCATION QUESTIONS?
