SPROCKETS: Packing a 911 for the Porsche Parade
By David Robertson, Region President
If you haven’t been lucky enough to attend a Porsche
Parade, just imagine around 900 Porsches from every
conceivable model line and vintage, comprised of
over 1500 PCA members and families, along with an
entourage of PCNA and Porsche AG executives and
associated vendors all in one spot for a week. That is
the scene at Porsche Parade, and it is spectacular! For
those of you that are unfamiliar, Parade is an annual
gathering of the PCA for a week of events that include
both casual and competitive driving and concours,
tours, banquets, lots of events for children, and even a
PCA member art show and golf tournament!
As I previously mentioned, last year in Spokane,
Tracy and I flew up and rented a car. Although we
ended up with a Mustang convertible due to a rental
counter glitch that worked in my favor for the first time
ever, there is still something just not quite right when
you don’t have a Porsche at a major PCA event.
This year, with a comparatively short eight-hour
drive to Lake of the Ozarks, and over 60 Maverick
Region members registered, it was a no-brainer to pack
up the 911 and hit the road. Packing a 911 for a weeklong
active trip sounds daunting at first, but as the
process started moving along and items were fitted in to
every nook and cranny of the car, I was very impressed
with the amount of “stuff” we were able to fit.
Two suitcases, two backpacks, two full sets of golf
clubs, and a couple of bags full of various “why not, we
are not flying” type items. The moment of truth came
when we went to pack the 911 back up for the trip
home. Laid out in the hotel room were not only all the
items listed above but all of the great items that you get
when you are at Parade, including lots of cool stuff from
Porsche and other vendors, giveaways during the events,
and items purchased from the Parade Store. There
were also really cool -- but really bulky and fragile --
trophies that we were very fortunate to receive this year.
As I surveyed these items that seemed to
be stacked up in the hotel room as if in an
overstocked warehouse club, my first thought
was that there is absolutely no way all this
stuff is getting home with us in that car.
Well to my surprise, after some trial and error and
discovery of little spaces good for stuffing one shoe or
a couple of T-shirts here and there, everything fit and it
was a comfortable ride.
With the conversations I had during Parade week
with people on the National Executive Committee and
other region members, I can tell you that the Maverick
Region is getting a lot of attention for the great things
2 August
our event volunteers are doing. As name after name was
called for either a national award or an event win or
place I couldn’t help but feel what an honor it is to be
the President of the Maverick Region PCA!
MAV OF THE MONTH: John Sandusky
John Sandusky is a
quiet behind-the-scenes
contributor to our Maverick
Region. He has led the
instructors at our Drivers’
Education for more than
a decade as our Chief
Driving Instructor. When
his boys were younger,
they were each pressed
into service as front gate
keepers at our driving
events (not a lot of fun at
6:30 am for a teenager).
Always working to
protect the safety of our drivers and coaches, he has
been open to new ideas and adjustments while ensuring
the fun and safe etiquette of our track-driving program.
Thank you, John, for everything you do for the
Maverick Region! Enjoy your $75.00 gift certificate
compliments of Autobahn Porsche.
