Foreword
My Handwriting Workbook provides teachers with a systematic approach to the
instruction and practice of handwriting. It has been written in the belief that it is
essential for all children to develop fluent, legible and attractive handwriting.
This handwriting programme develops:
• muscular coordination;
• fine motor skills;
• a writing hand preference;
• a comfortable and appropriate pencil grip;
• a comfortable and appropriate posture when writing;
• a positive attitude towards handwriting;
• an ability to complete patterns which develop the
movement and process of handwriting;
• a visual memory of letter shapes and formations;
• a fluent, legible and attractive writing style; and
• the ability to follow instructions.
Each double page develops the correct formation of the particular letter being
treated, and follows the same format, so children are able to concentrate on the
process of handwriting. The progressive development of each double page ensures
children practise:
• the correct movement associated with the letter;
• the correct technique for writing the letter;
• the correct formation of the letter; and
• flow and fluency in writing the letter.
Letters have been grouped according to the direction in which the letter is formed.
Review pages have been included at regular intervals to allow teachers to assess
each child’s handwriting.
Objectives
After completing this workbook, the child will be able
to demonstrate:
• correct posture;
• appropriate pencil grip;
• correct placement of workbook;
• the importance of maintaining pencils; i.e. length
and sharpness;
• correct formation of lower and upper case letters
and numbers;
• suitable speed and fluency;
• correct size and shape of letters;
• correct starting and exit points of letters;
• neat and legible handwriting; and
• correct use of dotted thirds.
Letters
This workbook explains letters as having a head, a
body and a tail. Some letters only have a body, some
have a head and body, some have a body and tail,
while ‘f’ has all three components.
Body letters:
Head and body letters:
Body and tail letters:
Head, body and tail letter:
The letters in this workbook have been grouped
according to the direction in which the letter is formed.
These groupings are as follows:
Anticlockwise letters:
Clockwise letters:
Downstroke letters:
Teachers Notes
Posture, Paper and Grip
It is essential that children
develop good habits to ensure
they are comfortable while
handwriting.
The correct posture is
illustrated.
The correct paper position for left and right-handers is
shown.
The correct pencil grip for left and right-handers is
known as the ‘precision grip’ and is shown below.
Left-handedness
Left-handed children not only use a different hand to
write with, they need to position their workbook
differently from other children and will need to form
some capital letters differently from right-handed
children. These capitals are shown below:
Teachers should not
attempt to change
childrens’ handedness
for handwriting.
Children are provided with the opportunity to trace
the lower and upper case letter at the correct size
on dotted thirds. Special attention should be paid
to where the letter begins on the dotted thirds line.
A sentence relating to the
artwork provides children
with an interesting fact to
copy and trace.
Children are encouraged to
revisit their work, analyse
each letter to select their best,
and to consider how they
performed on the page.
Children are required to
write on their own, using the
starting point and the
dotted thirds as a guide.
drawing in a smile, a frown or
a straight mouth.
Introduce the letter, in this
case ‘f’. Search for words
around the classroom that
begin with ‘f’ to enhance
visual recognition. Children
At the beginning of each lesson, demonstrate and discuss:
Children are required to trace
the first pattern, then to
complete the remainder
using the starting point
provided.
Children should be
encouraged to colour the
artwork to further develop
The common words the children
are asked to trace and copy begin
with the focus letter.
• left-hand page in one lesson and the right-hand page in the following lesson; or
• two pages in one lesson.
The workbook is designed to meet the requirements of individual children and the teacher.
The double page spread lends itself to a couple of possible uses. The children could complete the:
Two pages are devoted to each letter of the alphabet. This ensures that children have the opportunity to develop from the very basic skill of tracing through
to the more complex skill of writing a complete sentence.
