WELCOME...
Village Voice...
Welcome to the late summer edition of VV, and
what a summer it has been so far! Blistering
heat has meant that our usual lush green
landscape is scorched, and even those who
rejoice in the heat are looking for some respite
and rain!
In this issue of VV we report on the
successful events of the summer so far, these
include the Penn 7 & Super Fun Run, the Beer
Festival, and the TGMS 50th Anniversary
celebrations. The sports clubs have enjoyed the
favourable weather conditions, and have sent
pictures to show how much fun they have
enjoyed over the summer so far.
We have updates for you on the Gomm
Valley Development plans, which can also be
found on the P&TGRS website with
illustrations.
AROUND
THE VILLAGES
Penn Patient Participation Group
The PPG AGM took
place at Penn Surgery
on 23rd July. It was an
opportunity to thank
Gill Markham, who
stood down from the
PPG Executive
Committee, for her
tireless commitment to
the PPG, initially as Secretary and then as Chair
for the past three years. Gill’s communication
skills and warm personality have been highly
valued by her PPG and Practice colleagues.
From 1st August Buckinghamshire CCG are
asking patients to order repeat medications and
equipment (e.g. catheter and stoma bags and
accessories) from your GP practice directly,
rather than from your pharmacy or medical
equipment supplier. Patients can order repeat
medication online through Patient Access or by
taking the completed repeat prescription request
slip to the surgery. Please note: there are
exceptions to the change, for those patients who
need pharmacy support. More information is
available on the surgery website and at
Reception.
The dates of the flu clinics will be posted on
the surgery website by September.
The Sports & Social Club
Important news: The social club has a new
website www.pennandtylersgreensportsand
socialclub.co.uk. which will provide regular
updates on activities, availability to hire rooms
and any special events.
Date for your Diary: Fireworks - the firework
display will be held at the Sports & Social Club
on the 10th November, details will be published
locally.
Village Voice August/September 2018
Although we will have only just recovered
from the World Cup, the premier league and
championship will kick off again in August.
Once again, Penn will be showing all Friday,
Saturday and Sunday games in HD quality.
Come and join us and save the satellite fees, you
will be most welcome. Dave Taylor
P&TG Beer Festival
The 8th P&TG Annual Beer Festival proved to
be another great day out for the village.
Anton Setchell and his team put together
another fantastic range of music, for all tastes,
including a 24 piece choir, a first for the beer
Festival! 28 varieties of beer and cider were
available, along with the new 'food village',
THE PENN 7
& SUPER FUN RUN
Following another year of preparations,
when sometimes with all the bureaucracy
we now have to jump through, it seemed
as if it might not happen - with the
magnificent support from an army of
volunteers, the 2018 Super Fun Run and
Penn 7 came to fruition...
The races attracted yet more large fields, 301
runners for the Penn 7, 459 for the Fun Run and
69 for the Mini Marathons, great numbers and
great support for the 35th running (sic) of this
fantastic village event. You, the villagers came
out in droves during the day, though it might
have been a tad warmer, but thanks to you all
for giving your support to the event.
I would like to start off, on behalf of the
organising committee, by saying a VERY
VERY BIG THANK YOU to the wonderful
volunteers who performed the most important
role of the weekend, marshalling the junctions
and points on the route of both courses. Without
your efforts, the races would not have been able
to take place, but you provided a secure and safe
environment for all the
runners, and there were no
reported incidents, so you
all did a brilliant job!
This year we were
raising monies for Sparkles
and Charlies Footsteps, so
to Jo and Tim Oliver, (and
Charlie) thanks for
organising your group to man the inflatables on
the day, also to Steve and his bar staff, and John
and Debbie and their BBQ team. The music
during the afternoon provided great talent and
entertainment, so thanks to all the performers.
Having moved to chip timing for the Penn7,
which is usually expected these days for the
organised road races, we also moved into new
technology using card readers to take payments,
which is something we are looking to expand
next year!
The Fun Run, still being
recorded manually, relys
on the finishing team,
thanks to those who stood
in to issue numbers, record
placings and deliver
medals, we are human, and
sometimes things get
missed, but we think at the
end of the day, everyone
got a finishing position!!
We may consider chip
timing for the Fun Run in
the future, but that will
incur slight price increases.
Brian Bennett Retires
Brian Bennett, who
for the last 15 years,
has been the
P&TGRS Company
Secretary, recently,
and reluctantly
concluded that the
time had come to
pass the reins of
office to a new
incumbent, and so
announced his
retirement.
Brian drew up the structure and procedures of
the new Residents Society when the P&TG
Residents Association was combined with the
P&TG Society in 2003, and thereafter his long
experience as a senior civil servant was
employed in running the new Society like a
well-oiled machine for the considerable benefit
of our community. He has ensured that the
Society has maintained close contacts with local
government and MPs and enjoy their attention
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice August/September 2018
and respect. His wisdom and support of
colleagues across the range of the Society’s
activities will be sorely missed.
Brian was concerned that his going should
not throw the Society’s work into disarray and
was pleased that Ian Petrie volunteered to take
his place. Ian has considerable administrative
and management experience in the business
world as well as managing a large medical
practice and chairing a school PTA. Ron
Saunders, who a few years ago took over
Brian's task of recording our meetings, has
handed over this role to Madalyn Roker, who
will be working closely with Ian Petrie.
So, the world keeps turning and the P&TGRS
will continue to do its best for the good of our
community. Thank you Brian for the essential
part you have played in keeping us going over
so many years. Miles Green P&TGRS Chair
Local History Group
The history of Penn & Tylers Green and its
surrounding areas is astonishingly varied and
interesting and I would like to set up a local
history group which would bring together
those already actively involved and
encourage others to participate in many
different ways - by researching their own
subject or collaborating with someone else,
publishing the outcomes, creating a really
helpful and accessible archive of local
sources and photographs, giving
presentations and talks, and so on.
In the past, the now defunct P&TG
Society staged several memorable evenings
acting out dramatic episodes with period
music and I would also like to see this
capacity renewed. So there will be roles for
all kinds of skills and interests, not just
researchers.
If you are interested, please do get in touch
with me (815589) or Ron Saunders (816237)
to let us know what ideas you may have and
how you would like to be involved.
Suggestions are welcome and in due
course a meeting will be called. Miles Green
CHURCH NEWS
Holy Trinity & St Margaret's
As VV lands on your doormats, many readers
will have children at the Lighthouse Christian
Holiday week either at William Ramsey School
in Hazlemere or Beaconsfield High School. I
am delighted to report that the success of these
holiday clubs (we have to turn children away
every year) has resulted in Lighthouse holiday
clubs in Great Missenden, Hazlemere, Marlow,
Village Voice August/September 2018
Burnham, High Wycombe, Cressex and
Beaconsfield. This summer, over 6,000 children
will attend a ‘Lighthouse’ in our area. The
theme for the week is an interpretation of Bear
Grylls’ ‘The Island’. Being Lighthouse, the
development of this theme will be very
inventive and hands-on. Behind the arts, crafts,
drama, worship and fun is the thought that, even
though Bear Grylls is a committed Christian,
Jesus Christ is the only one who can really help
us survive on this island called earth.
Every September some 40,000 volunteers
across England organise 5,000 events to
celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It's
Lastly, you are invited to join us for our annual
the Harvest. We enjoy a slap-up meal and
terrific entertainment. It is free but because the
you book your place with Gail in the Parish
Penn Free Methodist Church
Do visit our special designated website for
recorded sermons: www.soundcloud.com/
penn-free-methodists. Recent uploads include an
address based on 2 Samuel 22:1-7 and is
entitled, IN MY DISTRESS I CALLED UPON
THE LORD. Both before and after becoming
king, David had to deal with many enemies.
Whilst Saul was still on the throne, David had to
flee for his life, and hide in caves in the
wilderness. Through all these dangers the Lord
protected him, as he earnestly prayed. So David
testifies in this passage to receiving God’s help
in the midst of great distress. This is also the
confidence of the believer in Christ today, who
likewise experiences the unique protecting
power of God, as he faces much opposition
around him to Biblical truth.
A further uploaded sermon is an exposition of
Habakkuk 3:5-9, and is entitled THE REALITY
OF GOD’S NATURE AS JUDGE. In a time of
much false teaching and seeking after popularity
within churches, many people have been
deceived into thinking that the Lord Jesus never
judges people and that God’s love is
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice August/September 2018
unconditional for all. Such error is is not what
the Bible teaches, but is used a pretext for
condoning practices which God’s word clearly
condemns. In this passage in Habakkuk we are
told of God that “burning coals went forth at His
feet”, referring to His anger upon those who
persistently defy Him. Yes, He is also full of
mercy, but He comes as a severe Judge against
those who refuse to repent of their sin.
Our Sunday services are at 11am and 6.30pm
and our midweek Bible Study and prayer
meeting is at 8pm on Wednesdays. All are most
welcome. Pastor Peter Simpson, www.realchristianity.
Tylers Green Methodist Church
Our minister, Rev John Richey has now ‘sat
down’ (the Methodist term for retirement) and
he and his wife Deacon Ruth Richey have
moved to London where Ruth has been
appointed Deputy Warden of the Methodist
Diaconate Order. They will both be missed not
only at Tylers Green but in the whole of the
High Wycombe Methodist Circuit. During
August, if you have need of a minister, contact
me in the first instance on 815256.
Our new minister, Rev. Vida Foday, takes up
her appointment on 1st September and will have
pastoral charge of the churches at Tylers Green
Holmer Green, Cryers Hill and Downley. Vida
tells me that getting to know her new
congregations and their needs will be top of her
agenda. She says that as Christians we are all
called to be ambassadors for Christ and she has
shared her hopes that together we can become
good ambassadors for the Lord. The first
opportunity to hear Vida preach at Tylers Green
will be at our harvest thanksgiving on 30th
September when our harvest gifts will be
donated to the Whitechapel Mission in London.
During August we have an open coffee
morning on Saturday 11th. If you would like to
come along we open at 10.00am and it would
we good if you can bring some holiday
memories with you (not compulsory!) Peter
Village Care ran a highly successful Open
Gardens. On a hot sunny Summer afternoon, on
the first day of July, a record number (328) of
people turned out to view the 10 Open Gardens
that were on display around the centre of our
quintessential English village.
Of added interest this year, was the significant
number of folk from outside Penn & Tylers
Green...testament perhaps to the wider publicity
employed on a couple of gardening websites in
addition to our local Village Voice and the smart
boards around the village from Savills.
The fine weather also encouraged folk to
consume more tea and cake both at ‘the
Sanctuary’ (St Margaret’s Church Hall) and
especially at Mary Coker’s very hospitable
garden ‘pit stop’...to the extent that another
record was set in takings here. Special thanks
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
go to to Mary and her family for this wonderful
service, and to our local sponsor, ‘fm’, who also
supplied an added nice touch within their swish
wallet containing the garden map route and pen:
a Honey Bee flower mix of seeds!
All in all, a lovely warm atmosphere...
physically and emotionally...over our Village
that Sunday afternoon which resulted in just
over £2000 being raised for our Village Care
charity to donate, in the coming year, to local
worthy causes, such as the defibrillator now
positioned outside the Middle School for the
benefit of the whole community.
We are hugely grateful to the local folk who
so generously open their lovely gardens each
year as well as those who view them and
contribute so much to the ability of Village Care
to meaningfully give back to this lovely
community of which we are all so privileged to
be a part of.
We would like to give you advance
warning that we will hold our AGM on
Friday 12th October in St. Margaret's
Church Sanctuary, at 7.30 for 8 pm. It
is usually a short meeting with lots of
wine and nibbles (before, during and
after).
Please come and meet your fellow
volunteers, and bring anyone you can
think of who might join our ranks; we
always need new telephonists and
drivers. We are still looking for a new
Treasurer. If anyone wishes to drive, run
the telephone, or be our Treasurer,
please ring me Peter Sachs 257823
SCHOOLS
NEWS ROUND UP
Tylers Green Middle School
The Summer Term at TGMS has been a really
exciting and successful end to the academic
year. I am enormously proud of what we have
achieved and in particular offer my
congratulations to the Year 6 pupils for the
tremendous end of Key Stage 2 SATS results. In
comparison to the national picture, yet again the
staff at Tylers Green Middle School have
continued to support our pupils to achieve
significantly above other schools across the
country.
2018 has been an amazing and memorable
year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. There
has been an overwhelming response to the
fundraising events such the Golden Anniversary
Ball and the Music Concert that took place in
July. Whilst the total amount raised has not been
finalised, we expect it to be in the region of
£20,000. This is a staggering amount and thanks
go to all of the members of the Golden
Committee for their hard work, led by the
enthusiastic and energetic Marianne Whitlock.
The actual 50th anniversary is 5th September
2018; which happens to be a County INSET
Day and the beginning of the 2018-19 academic
year. TGMS staff and governors will celebrate
with the children on the first day of term, 6th
September. We plan to have a special
anniversary assembly and birthday cake for all!
On Friday 21st September, there will be an
A Golden Week of Celebrations for Tylers
Green Middle School...
The beginning of July brought sunshine and
celebration to TGMS as children, staff, parents
and the local community came together to raise
a glass to 50 years of our wonderful school!
Over 300 guests filled the beautiful marquee on
an unforgettable summer’s evening to listen to a
series of songs from the last five decades.
Guests were entertained by the school choir and
the Local Vocals and were treated to a one-off
performance by the, quite brilliant, staff choir
who had formed only weeks before especially
for the occasion! The marquee was filled with
the sounds of a school and village community
coming together to create a wonderful evening
of very special memories.
The marquee was utilised to the full over the
next couple of days as the children enjoyed their
end of year discos on the specially created
dance floor, complete with an enormous
glitter-ball! By Saturday evening, the space had
been transformed into a sophisticated venue
ready to receive more than 320 guests who
arrived for the Golden Ball on possibly one of
the most glorious days of the year! England had
secured their place in the semi-finals of the
World Cup and the atmosphere couldn’t have
been happier. Guests were treated to an evening
of wonderful food and were served at the bar by
a number of TGMS staff who had offered their
support to ensure the evening ran swimmingly!
The wonderful Black Sheep entertained
everyone with the most fabulous evening of live
music and managed to get every single guest up
on the dance floor for the whole evening. If
people had ever questioned the sense of
community in our village they needed to have
looked no further than inside TGMS’ marquee
- a truly memorable evening that people will be
talking about for many years to come!
Most importantly, the events thus far have
raised in excess of £20K (monies are still being
counted) towards the creation of the proposed
outdoor learning area which will be a lasting
legacy for our children for many years to come.
The generosity of our sponsors and guests on
the night has been overwhelming and TGMS is
truly grateful for everyone’s support.
And the celebrations are ongoing - on 21st
September TGMS will open its doors from
1.30pm-2.45pm to welcome our elderly
community to come along for a cup of tea and a
slice of a very special 50th cake. This is strictly
a ticket-only event and tickets may be obtained
from the TGMS office. From 5pm-9pm at our
the school’s history, view some memorabilia
and enjoy a tour hosted by members of the
Since the last edition of VV, we have had a
great deal going on in school. We were visited
by a travelling theatre company who performed
the Little Princess and then ran some workshops
for Year 2. We had our sports morning on the
Common. There was a great atmosphere and
sportsmanship amongst all the children. We
started earlier to miss the full sun and cloud
cover kept us cool– the perfect weather
conditions! The children had been practising
and the determined looks on some of their faces
was incredible. Our youngest children
competed very well, win or lose, the children all
enjoyed taking part. Parents enjoyed
encouraging the children and helped
support the winners to their podium. I
would like to thank the Parish Council for
allowing us to hold our events on the
Common. It is a lovely space for us to
access and puts us into the heart of the
community. “Hartbeeps” kindly
sponsored Ice pops for the children after
the Sports activities.
We had other exciting trips including;
• Whipsnade Zoo- when
we were very lucky with the
weather and the children
really loved the opportunity
to see the animals and came
back with lots to tell us
about their adventure;
• The Chiltern Open Air
Museum which was
thoroughly enjoyed by our
youngest children;
• RAF Hendon;
• A visit from the owner
of an owl sanctuary so we
were able to see the owls up
close in the classrooms for Year 2.
Both Year 2 classes visited Holy Trinity
Church where they learned some of the history
of the church and had the chance to ring a
church bell and look at and play the organ and
learn about the vestments worn by the Vicar.
Thanks to Mike Bisset and his team from the
church for giving our children such a wonderful
morning in this beautiful church.
We held our Summer Fair and leavers’ camp
over the last weekend. We had beautiful weather
for the Summer Fair but the campers did get
rained on heavily for about half an hour!! We
attended leavers’ assemblies and leavers’
concerts with a little sadness that our wonderful
pupils will be moving on to their new schools.
The children all received a small gift as they
leave the school to remind them of their time at
Tylers Green First School. This links to our very
special teddy in our bell tower who watches
over the school at all times! I hope that the
children’s memories of TGFSwill remain with
them as they start on the next stage of their
learning journey. We also sid goodbye to staff
leavers and wish them happiness in the future.
Our pupils have become the confident,
independent young people with a thirst for
learning and a positive, motivated and
resilient attitude just as I knew they would
three years ago when they began their
school journey with us. It has been a real
pleasure to be part of their learning and life
journey. Mrs J Dieppe, Headteacher,
subsidise an end of term trip to Bekonscot
for all of our children.
We are currently setting up a sensory
children can access but it will particularly
benefit those children with sensory
so proud of each and every one of these
amazing children as they move on to the next
SPORTS
NEWS ROUND UP
P&TG Lawn Tennis Club
Summer tennis season is now in full swing at
the club and it’s been really fabulous to see so
many people of all ages making the most of the
amazing sunshine we’ve enjoyed so far… Can
it last?!!
We have enjoyed several busy socials at the
club recently with the Ladies’ Wagstaff Cup,
won by Jacqui Simpson and Emma Attock. The
Mixed Handicap Competition enjoyed a great
turnout - winners Amy Finnemore-Gibbs &
Mandy Cobbing – the evening was finished in
style with delicious Pimms and Paella provided
by Caroline Oakley and Club Chairman Nigel
Godwin.
The Parent & Child tournament weekend was
a lot of fun and so great to see the juniors out
NEW TIGER TURF COURTS
enjoying a bit of friendly competition. It was a
busy weekend for Alan Connor who managed
the double with Oliver in U10s, and Daniel in
U12s, with Kevin and Joshua Pryce winning the
U18s. Well done to everyone!
Lastly our annual Chairman’s Golf evening
took place on the Wycombe Heights par 3
course. Maria Bailey was top lady golfer on the
night and Andrew Barr overall winner. Trophies
were handed out during a well earned drink at
the Red Lion afterwards.
The club junior section also deserves
particular note with the U8s taking part in their
first tournament. Two of our juniors in particular
have been enjoying real success recently;
Robyn Went and Oliver Connor who are both in
Year 5 have in the last 4 weeks represented
Buckinghamshire as the Number 1 Girl and
Boy in the Lionel Cox and the County Cup U10
Teams. The County Cup includes 40 counties
and each are placed in a box of 5 Teams, with
only the Top team getting through to the Finals.
The Bucks Boys had to play Hertfordshire,
Surrey, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. Oliver
secured Singles Wins against the Top Player for
We’ve also been continuing to improve the
club’s facilities with generous sponsorship of
three new courtside benches. There has been no
better time to come and try out the fantastic
Amersham Town with a new management team
heralding a new era.
After seven seasons managing the first team
Giovanni Sepede has stepped down as manager,
alongside James Pritchard, Co-manager for the
last three seasons, the pair won back to back
Hellenic Division One East titles. Together they
have overseen the most successful period for the
club, and we are so grateful for all they have
given us. We now have to move on to a new era
and are therefore delighted to have secured the
services of a former Penn player and Chalfont
Wasps manager, Gareth Williams. He will be
supported by Neil Cannings who moves from
reserve team manager to assistant first team
manager. With the promotion of Neil Cannings
to the First Eleven management team we are
delighted to announce that Nigel Miller, the
former first team Goalkeeping Coach will
manage the team for the 2018/19 season.
Former first team Captain and team Penn &
Tylers Green FC legend Jack Harding will be
Player/Assistant Manager. Nigel has been
working towards his UEFA coaching licences
over the last year and this is a great opportunity
for his first steps into senior club management.
Having Jack along side him is a very positive
move and one we are delighted with.
Another resignation also came, sadly, from
our legendary Physio, dressing room motivator
and another member of the successful team,
namely our Physio, John “Grimmo” Grimsdell.
His upbeat nature and subtle wit have calmed
many a nervous dressing room over his many
years of service and he will step down as soon
as a suitable successor has been installed. We
will all miss him.
As our female section continues to grow and
flourish, we are adding a new section to our club
this season, our first ever Ladies team, who will
be managed by Damian Atkins and will be
playing in the Thames Valley Womens league
Division 2. Please get in touch if you want to
be involved!
As the new season approaches for the junior
and girls section we are on the look out for
Sponsored by Argent Wealth Management
At the time of writing, we are in the middle of
this country’s longest heatwave since 1976 and
this has delivered some beautiful afternoons and
evenings in which to play cricket. No mid-week
evenings fretting over weekend weatherforecast,
no rushing onto the field with the
covers, no rain breaks or abandoned matches -
just hour on hour of glorious sunshine.
On the playing front, the two Senior XIs have
played a total of 21 matches to date and with
more wins than defeats, both sides are enjoying
successful seasons. On their day, and when
player-availability is good, our 1st XI is as good
as any in the League and a title-challenge is
hopefully not beyond them this year.
Player availability remains a challenge for all
Clubs in this day and age, particularly in a
summer with weekend TV fixtures for the
football World Cup. However we at P&TGCC
have been working hard with our Junior section
over the past 10 years and we are now wellserved
by a good number of Junior players (and
Dads!) who have stepped up to make both XIs
more competitive this year.
Tom Demery, Connor Haumann, Jake Wilson
and Kenzie Christopherson (all U15-U18) have
played regularly for the 1st XI this year whilst
Lochie Christopherson, Danny Mussell, Henry
Barber, Alex Woolley, LJ Ekendhal, James
Woodhead and Amy Woodhead (all U12-U15)
have debuted for the Senior 2nd XI this
summer, with Henry (U14) recording his first 50
in a victory v Emmbrook & Beardwood in early
June. It has been wonderful to see them
representing the Club with such distinction,
adding lots of agility to our fielding displays as
well as scoring valuable runs and taking
important wickets.
We have also seen significant contributions
from ‘occasional’ players who, perhaps
encouraged onto the field by the beautiful
weather, have added some experience and
helped our younger players. This has all created
a feel-good story at the Club this year and it’s
satisfying to hear tales of the fun being had
making their way to parties and barbeques
around the village all summer. If that persuades
more people to think about dusting off their kit
and having a go again in the future, that would
be just fine.
There is plenty of good news from the Colts’
side of the Club. Sunday morning coaching
sessions have been thoroughly enjoyable this
year, thanks again to the unbroken sunshine, and
have been well-attended by the youngest players
(U7-U9). On the competitive-playing side, we
have played 30 matches across 4 age-groups
with our U12 and U14 sides pushing hard at the
top of their League Tables. The standout
individual performance of the Colts season
came from Joshua Morris who took a hat-trick
in an U12 match at Chenies & Latimer. All
clean-bowled…not bad at all, especially
considering that Joshua himself is only 9 years
old and was playing 3 age-groups up! We think
Joshua might be playing senior cricket
alongside his grandfather Terry Bentley pretty
soon now.
One further thing of note this year has been
the number of volunteers who have worked
tirelessly to ensure that the Cricket Ground is in
the best shape it has been in for years. In
particular, our Committee would like to extend
its gratitude to Terry Bentley for preparing the
wickets, and to Craig Morris and Nick Parry for
all their digging, strimming, clearing, carrying,
mowing and tidying-up of the areas around the
ground. It looks wonderful and we simply could
not manage without their efforts.
The senior League-season continues each
Saturday into early September and the Bank
Holiday weekend in August will play host to
our annual Six-a-side tournament. This is
always a fun event with lots of light-hearted and
entertaining cricket on show. Please join us
Since our last update the Waders played at 2
excellent golf courses selected by our 2018
captain, Peter Credland. In late May we visited
the wonderful Calcot Park GC in Berkshire.
Playing off a handicap of 9, the day was won by
Paul Weekly scoring a magnificent 42 points.
He’s beginning to play like his distant relative;
the USA PGA Professional Boo Weekly. No
mercy has been shown by our handicap
secretary who has applied his usual savage cut
to Paul’s handicap, living up to his nickname of
Nasty Nods.
In late June we played at the Shires GC near
Barnet for the very first time. Congratulations to
Vince Michael who came out on top winning on
countback from Adam Holbrook, both scoring
31 points. Much lower scoring was the order of
the day with the water hazards at the course
claiming a good number of golf balls.
On Friday 17th August we will return to
another of our favourite courses at Sonning Golf
Club. On Wednesday 26th September we will
be playing at the magnificent North Hants Golf
Club where Justin Rose honed his golfing skills.
If you are interested in joining our friendly
Society or to come along as a guest at either of
the upcoming events, contact our Secretary Bob
Teuton on 07973 137446. This Summer has
been great so far, so why not have a bit of fun
and play some golf with us Waders? John Horton
THE 2018
VILLAGE SHOW
Saturday 15th September. Save the date
for the 49th P&TG Village Show!
The Penn & Tylers Green Village Show has
been staged for more than 40 years. General
classes are open to everyone. In addition there
are classes for under 14’s and “men only”
cookery. There are trophies for a “young cook”,
“young designer” and “young photographer”
under the age of 18. With so many classes there
will be something to take your fancy. Please do
have a go and enter something! Here are some
of the highlights of this year’s schedule...
Flowers, fruit and vegetables: With the sun
coming out over the Bank Holiday weekend, did
you sowing your marrow and runner bean
seeds for children’s classes? As well tend to
your existing plants that will provide that flower
for the Show? We know there are a few of you
out there that nurture your roses, dahlias and
chrysanthemums I am sure they are getting
plenty of attention too. We are looking forward
to a few more novices entering this year.
Miscellaneous: Since we mentioned in the last
VV about branching out we have had a few
people intrigued at the chance to see eggs
displayed from their hens on the day and more
fun is to see what happy pets (caged) will be
entered too.
Domestic: We are sure people have been
inspecting their jars of jam and marmalade to
see which to save and enter to the Village Show
and avoid it being eaten between now and
then. Baking bread rolls is one of the entries
which provides you all with the chance to
experiment with different flours as well as
working out the technique to ensure they all
come out a uniform size and shape, happy
baking to all of you. We wonder how many
lemon meringue pies will be made and tasted
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice August/September 2018
over the next months, let us know how many
you have made when you bring your entry in
on the day.
Craft: Over the years, we have always had one
entry to be made from different materials, such
as wood, ceramic, metal or other items, why not
use recycled materials and show what can be
done with everyday items we discard in our
waste daily. Embroidery and needlework has
proved popular to a number of people in the
area and we look forward to their designs and
entries at the Village Show. We feel there are
lots of ideas out there to get you started and
can’t wait to see the results. You still have time
to start designing and creating and its open for
all from youngsters and grown-ups alike.
Art and photography: The digitally enhanced
photographs have always drawn comments
from the judges, entrants as well as the visitors
on the day, ranging from shock at how a photo
can be distorted so much to wonder at how a
photo can be adapted and changed to become
a work or art in its own right. This year we have
tried to give much greater opportunities for
entrants making the subjects much broader
and naturally, looking forward to see what
arrives on the day. Junior photographers can
have a go at “all creatures great and small” and
“the sky’s the limit”.
Junior: There are a whole host of junior classes.
Don’t forget - if you really can’t think of what to
do in your own age group, enter an older age
group or the open classes which are open to
everyone. How are your sunflowers growing or
are you just about to sow the seeds? What with
the news about a new caterpillar that has
arrived in the UK, it opens up more ideas for the
under 3’s, 5’s and 7’s to be more creative with
their entries. Our blind judge always loves
attending the Show and spends time
experiencing most of the entries and is looking
forward to tasting the junior’s popcorn
experiments along with mugs of fragrant herbs.
Go to: www.pennandtylergreen.org.uk for a
full list of classes / entry form. See you there,
with your entries, there’s a class for everyone.
WOODLAND
& GREEN SPACES
Village Voice August/September 2018
During the summer months activity in the world
is very quiet, however more people have taken
to walking in the woods during recent hot
weather where it remained relatively cool under
the trees. It certainly is busier in the early
morning and late evening.
The number of trees drop branches during
this hot weather and generally on the side routes
we will allow the path to move around the
obstruction. Spare a thought for the animals as
most of the ponds have now dried out. Myself
and a number of neighbours have put water out
on the edge of the wood for the wildlife. You
can certainly help the bird population by
ensuring water is available in your gardens.
A number of dog walkers seem to struggle
with the concept of taking poo bags home when
they are filled or clearing poo off paths. "Stick
and flick" is a simple effective . I'm grateful for
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
a small number of users of the wood for their
efforts in clearing litter as they walk.
No Work parties are held during the breeding
season however we may need to call on
volunteers to help with a fallen branch or cut
back wayward growth. If you would be willing
to give a couple of hours to help with light
maintenance in the wood please send us your
details. We will be starting some clearing of
path side ways in September. Help is
appreciated.
Enjoy the wood and maybe sit awhile quietly
and de-stress from the daily grind. Mike Morley
Guides, Brownies & Rainbows
Tylers Green has a substantial waiting list for
girls to join the different sections of Girl
Guiding. Lesley, our District administrator,
contacts parents when a space in a Unit
becomes available. Sadly, recently, the response
to her emails have been very slow or not at all,
meaning filling the Units is taking much longer
than is necessary. If your email address has
changed since registering your daughter please
update the Girl Guiding website. If you no
longer wish to accept a place please let Lesley
know. No response will mean your daughter’s
name will be removed from the waiting list
completely.
Guides and Brownies have been out and
about taking advantage of the lovely weather.
The Guides, a thriving group of 24 Guides,
did a Penny Hike and ended up walking 3 miles
around Tylers Green and will be having a picnic
on The Common at the end of term.
5th Brownies visited Mop End, part of the
Field Studies Council, where Brownies had
problem solving and activities to complete.
This included bug hunting, a forest challenge
and creating an artist’s palette using nature. 1st
Brownies are making a visit to the fire station.
Rainbows are going to Wagamamas, a Japanese
restaurant in High Wycombe.
Kingswood Trefoil, Adult Guiding, will also
be enjoying the outdoors when they attend their
Summer Gathering in Princes Risborough along
with all the other Guilds in Buckinghamshire
and their annual camp, jointly with High
Wycombe Trefoil, at Ellesborough Guide
centre. Sue Stephens
The Penn Seven & Fun Run went
well again, we helped keep the Penn
Seven runners cool with plenty of
water by manning the station at the
Crown. Thanks go to all our helpers.
This long hot summer has started
early. There is still some camping
ahead then we have our summer
break. Don't forget our Autumn
Jumble Sale. We look forward to
seeing you all on October 6th at the
Village Hall. As usual we will be
Evening WI
Visitors and members were greeted with a glass
of prosecco or fruit punch at our recent Birthday
Meeting. We then listened to a very interesting
and informative talk about Bucks Spies and
Subversives given by Denise Beddows. We
particularly liked the the tale about the traitor,
Donald Maclean, whose ashes were scattered in
Penn churchyard and were afterwards
deliberately swept into the gutter. The talk was
followed by a splendid array of finger food
provided by the members and a lovely social
occasion to enjoy each other's company.
In July we had a demonstration of stained
glass. Anna Conti described her career and
explained that she does not “do” churches but
rather she does houses and gardens. The panels
that she brought with her were truly beautiful
and we hope to organise a workshop in the
coming months.
We took part in Songs of Praise on The
Common, along with the Morning WI. The
Morning WI decided that they were bright
although not necessarily beautiful(!) and the
Evening WI decided that they would like to be
good neighbours. Both WIs emphasised their
campaigning role with the campaign against
loneliness being high on the current agenda as
well as that against plastic microfibres which are
shed at the rate 70,000 per machine wash! (We
are non-religious despite having Jerusalem as
our anthem – a legacy from the 1940s. So, if
you wish us to partake in a Mosque praise or
Humanist “Service” please do feel free to ask.)
There is no formal meeting in August.
September brings a talk about the Time Team at
Chenies Manor, which I am sure will be of great
interest to many. Also in September a coach
will take many of us to a tour of Hidden
London, part of which will be on the Regents
Canal. Some of us did this tour some years ago
in torrential rain. Although we enjoyed it we are
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice August/September 2018
hoping for some sunshine this time round.
Our knit and natter groups continue to thrive
as well as our book club and we hope to start a
chomp and chatter group in the Autumn.
As always, we are happy to welcome any
ladies who wish to join us on the second
Thursday of the month at 8pm. Pat Hedley, 812645
Morning WI
As I write this the beautiful summer weather
continues. We were lucky enough to have a
perfect day for a visit to Wren Davis and really
enjoyed their farm which was most informative.
In the picture you will see 20 members on the
trailer taking it easy while the fit six walked
round the fields to see the cows, many different
crops and into the woods with the pigs. We
finished with homemade cake and tea. We will
have another outing in September to a railway
near Henley.
Our June speaker was a BBC Gardener of the
Year winner who brought some lovely plants to
sell to encourage us in our own gardens. In
contrast in July we learnt the skills of stained
glass windows. There is no official meeting in
August, but we will have a social morning with
cake on our usual meeting day just to catch up.
Our Spetember speaker will be a lady telling
us about her experiences as a lady toastmaster.
If any of this sparks your interest and you
would like to visit us do come along to the
P&TG Sports & Social Club on the third
Wednesday of the month or call me (details
below). We look forward to seeing you. Sheila
GOMM VALLEY
DEVELOPMENT
UPDATE...
Gomm Valley - “The Greenest New Place
in England”... This is how the developers
described their aspirations for Gomm Valley at
their ‘Community Engagement and Design’
event held in the fields behind the Perigrine
Business Park over weekend of 30 June/2 July.
This comprised an exhibition to illustrate the
development objectives, together with
explanatory talks and Q&A. The developer
selected by Aviva (as landowner), is known as
‘Human + Nature’(H+N), which has assembled
a team with strong credentials in the planning
and design of sustainable communities.
Proposals are still at pre-planning stage, and the
aim was to present themes that would form the
basis for development, and share thoughts on
these with the local community, inviting
comment that could then be taken into account
as the planning and design moves forward. The
overarching themes are intended to enhance
Gomm Valley’s special characteristics, through
respect for landscape and ecology, sustainability,
and green transport, delivered through
continuing community engagement in the
design and delivery process. The plans covered
the valley area south of Ashwells (which is to be
developed by a different team), incorporating
some important deviations from WDC’s
Development Brief, particularly with regard to
the configuration of the Gomm Valley spine
road and its connection with Cock Lane.
In terms of impact on P&TG, H+N’s
preference is to leave Cock Lane as single track,
with the spine road reconfigured to join Cock
Lane much further down (opposite the
Christmas tree yard). The alignment of the
spine road would respond to the topography,
creating a slowly winding and circuitous path
through the valley. The intention is to make the
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice August/September 2018
spine road an unattractive option for drivers
looking for a rat-run down to the A40.
The contribution of GV&A to Wycombe’s
future housing needs (as defined by the new
Local Plan) is 520 new homes, of which 100 are
on the Ashwells site. This leaves 420 in Gomm
Valley. H+N propose a significant increase in
this, to a figure potentially between 700 and
1,000 units, citing the creation of best value
from the developable area and a critical mass
able to support their proposed community
facilities. They believe that this need not
necessarily occupy a much bigger footprint than
WDC’s plan,, as there will be more flats
(providing an increased number of smaller,
more affordable, homes). This increase will
place added pressure on traffic volumes. To
mitigate this, H+N hopes to reduce car
dependency by providing a small fleet of
electric buses running a service to HW station at
peak times.
The focus of the new community will be a
village square with a mix of uses, including
primary school, supported living, coffee shop,
restaurant, bakery and convenience store. They
also envisage co-working facilities such as
‘makerspaces’ and studios, car club/bike club,
and a GP practice. The square will open out to
the valley to its north where there will be
amenity grassland and play areas for children.
The immediate impression was that H+N
seems to have a very different idea of how they
want to deliver the project compared with that
of WDC, but this needs to be tested for
feasibility and deliverability. It is expected that
the Liaison Group will meet soon, for H+N to
explain how they intend to move forward and
for WDC to indicate their response. All being
well, an outline planning application could be
submitted at the end of September, with the
development taking 7-9 years to complete.
(where there is an informative video). Ken Cooke
ASHWELLS
(GOMM) VALLEY
The History of Ashwells (Gomm) Valley
(Part 8)... Captain Arthur Granville
Soames (1886-1962)
We saw that the very young and recently
married Charlesworths only lived for two years
at Ashwells. In August 1919, they sold the
house with its 58 acres, a bailiff's house,
stabling, a laundry, poultry houses, a dovecot
and several cottages, to Captain Arthur
Granville Soames of the Coldstream Guards.
He paid £14,500 for the property. Captain
Soames was the son of a wealthy brewer/artist
who, according to the Tatler, had mysteriously
disappeared in Bournemouth over the previous
Christmas, was presumed dead by the courts,
and left his only son most of an estate then
worth more than a quarter of a million. His
younger sister married Lord Baden Powell who
founded the Scouts and Guides. He was 33
when he came to Ashwells and had been a
regular soldier, commissioned into the
Coldstream Guards in 1905 and served in the
First War. He later inherited the estate of
Sheffield Park which had previously owned by
John Holroyd Baker, the 1st Earl of Sheffield
and descendant of the Baker family of Penn.
The Soames family is famous these days
because their eldest son was (Arthur)
Christopher Soames (1920-87) who married Sir
Winston Churchill's youngest daughter, Mary, in
1947 and became our Ambassador in Paris,
Common Market Commissioner in Brussels and
the last Governor of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
His eldest son, Nicholas, is still an MP. There
were still several people in the village who had
worked for the estate and remembered it well
when I started to look into its history and I was
assured that Christopher's appendix had been
taken out on the kitchen table.
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice August/September 2018
Christopher's obituary describes his childhood
as an unhappy one, for his parents were
eventually divorced in 1934, and said that he
had developed a dislike and contempt for his
father. I wrote to him in 1985 to ask if he had
any papers or photographs of his time in
Ashwells (he would have been only seven when
they left). He replied very courteously, but
neither he nor his sister were able to help.
The photograph below was in the Times
in1987 when Christopher Soames died and
includes all the people mentioned above, but I
am not sure how Field Marshal Montgomery
fits in to this 1952 family group. My thanks to
Ron Saunders for the information and portrait
from the Tatler and to Eddie Morton for
arranging both illustrations in a more
publishable form. Miles Green
Dear VV,
I just wondered if anyone else is as fed up as I
am with all the noisy vehicles that go around the
village. The buzzy motorbikes and sport type cars
create noise pollution. With lovely warm weather
and doors and windows open and sitting in the
garden it very unpleasant. If these thoughtless
drivers like hearing their very noisy engines well I
do not.
I am also frightened about the speed that cars
drive down New Road from Cock Lane, the 30 mph
speed restrictions are ignored. I dread to think
what it will be like when the new houses are built
and there will be increased traffic flying down the
road. This is supposed to be a village not a race
track for speeding vehicles. Liz Winkless, TG resident
Dear VV,
Noticeboard
August / September 2018
This is not my usual report about this
lovely community, as I have suffered an
unpleasant experience, which started
with an unstoppable nose bleed, and
took me to hospital with a severe loss of
blood. The ambulance team and all
doctors and nurses at Wexham Park
were skilled and kind in every way, despite their
overload of work, always positive and focused.
My nose was cauterised next day, and I was duly
taken home by the Red X (recent initiative in the UK to
help the elderly and give short term resettlement care.
I had not realised how seriously I had been affected, so
when my blood pressure dropped after trying to do too
much too soon, I had to return for more tests. I was
allowed home to go into respite care in Alde House, to
be well looked after in comfort and lovely surroundings
until able to return home into daily care until stronger.
Some weeks on, I am recovering well from the
anaemia, and, taking life more gently. I am full of
gratitude for all the wonderful treatment in hospital,
and since Many many thanks to all my lovely family,
friends and neighbours.
Picking up the threads of life again, I have to say I
was sorry to miss the summer activities and events of
this lovely community. I was especially sorry to miss
the Songs of Praise in the Marquee on the Common in
July. The theme was of voluntary organisations here.
Introduced by the Revd Mike Bisset. The Village Care car
service to important appointments for those without
transport, the Tylers Green Village Hall and all its
activities, two WI Meetings one morning, and one
evening, and the Scouts. We are fortunate to benefit
from those that fit our interests.
Sadly, we have lost good friends these last few
months who have passed away. Condolences to
families and friends.
Finally, my love and thanks to all who have helped
me to get well, and to all readers of my page. P.S. If
anyone would like to know about the Red X initiative in
Bucks, please contact me. Pat Dancer
Ed's note: glad you are on the mend Pat! and from all
the readers of VV and your friends in P&TG we wish you a
speedy recovery!
Barnardo’s Support 4 Parents
Have you ever thought: 'If only I knew then what I know now'...?
Now you can help in a really practical way. We’re looking for
volunteers to work in a structured way with families in your area
who are struggling to parent children of school age. If you are
interested in working with families and have experience in
parenting or looking after children, you can make a difference. If
you can spare about 3 hours a week, we’ll train you in how to
pass on your precious skills and knowledge and we’ll support you
in doing a really worthwhile job. Want to know more? Phone
Barnardo’s Support 4 Parents for an informal chat on
The Sound of a Merlin or Two...
It might seem like the Summer of 1940 to see a couple of
Spitfires over the village but weather permitting, you
wouldn’t be imagining it. The sound of Rolls Royce Merlin
engines is quite unmistakable – more of a growl. This
August Bank Holiday, the 27th August, the RAF will send
two Spitfires from the Battle of Britain flight, to over fly
the Hazlemere Summer fete at Sir William Ramsay School.
I would like to thank readers who responded to my
appeal for volunteers because this has ensured that the
fete can go ahead this year. The scale of operations has
increased significantly, so nothing succeeds like success!
The other point is that the fete brochure is delivered to
all households that receive Village Voice but some people
were not aware of the JNP Yellow pages that contain a lot
of local contact information for all types of organisations.
If you think there is not much to do around here, this
might persuade you otherwise. Bob Digby
What is your life based on? Who gives you your moral compass? Many will
Sodales nunc suscipit sit
say, ‘Well, I love my family’. That of course is good, but so, usually, do the
Fringilla Viver aliquet
worst of men; and how many people acknowledge that their family is
integer, interdum
actually the gift of God? Very few. Many are kind to their own friends, but so
consectetuer pede.
were the unscrupulous tax-collectors in Christ’s day, and He told them that
such kindness was not sufficient to meet His requirements 123-456-7890 of holiness
(Matthew 5:46-48). Many have a confidence in their own goodness, because
they donate to charity and adhere to the politically correct attitudes which
society demands of them. However, the scribes and the Pharisees in the
New Testament also donated to charity, doing so with much public display.
They were highly thought of by those around them, and were very proud of
their own virtue; but the Lord Jesus Christ still condemned them (e.g.
Matthew 23:1-33). You see, He can only help those who humble themselves
before Him, and who acknowledge their sin. He is the Saviour of those, and
those alone, who have no confidence in their own goodness.
