Phonemic awareness
Phoneme segmentation activities – 1
Phoneme segmentation is the ability to break words into their separate phonemes.
Syllable clapping
1. For this activity, ask the pupils to listen to the segments or syllables of sounds they hear
in words.
2. Say a word and have the pupils clap the syllables. For example, kite has one clap (or syllable) and
hospital has three.
3. To make the activity more challenging, have the pupils listen to a word, think about the number of
syllables and then clap the syllables to check their answers.
Tracking sounds
Using this activity will help pupils identify the number of sounds in a word.
Materials
• copy of page 18 (laminated) for each pupil
• wipe-off markers
1. Prepare the activity by photocopying and laminating the chart on page 18 for each pupil. Provide
each pupil with a wipe-off marker.
2. To play, the teacher says a word and has each pupil think of the number of individual sounds he or
she can hear in the word.
3. The pupil makes an X for each sound heard. For example, the pupil would mark XXXX for the word
glass (/g/ /l/ /a/ /s/).
4. After completing this for each word, show the pupils the actual spelling of the word and discuss the
fact that not all letters in a word are represented by separate sounds.
5. To use this as a learning centre activity, make a recording of your voice slowly pronouncing a series
of words.
6. Pupils listen to the words on the recording and mark on the chart the number of sounds they hear.
