Vowel activities
Use these activities to provide your pupils with a solid understanding of long and short vowels.
Short vowels
This activity provides practice for identifying short vowel sounds.
Materials
• small magazine pictures with different middle vowel sounds
• five small envelopes
• marker
1. Cut out an assortment of magazine pictures. It is best if the pictures represent one-syllable words.
Cut out pictures representing short a (cat, pan, cab), short e (hen, pen), short i (hill, pin), short o
(pot, stop sign) and short u (cup, rug). Laminate the pictures for durability.
2. Next, label each of the five envelopes with a different vowel (short a, short e, short i, short o, short u).
3. To play, a pupil determines the name of each picture and the short vowel sound heard. The pupil
places each picture inside the correct envelope.
Long or short?
This activity provides your pupils with practice identifying short and long vowel sounds.
Materials
• copies of pages 31–35 • crayons or markers (optional)
• scissors • manila envelope
• pencils
1. Photocopy pages 31–35 and cut the cones and ice-cream scoops apart.
2. Using a pencil, write the word long or short on the back of each scoop
for self-checking.
3. Colour and laminate the cards, if desired.
4. Place the cards in a manila envelope for storage.
5. To play, a pupil places the ‘Long vowel’ and ‘Short vowel’ cones
on their desk.
6. The pupil then reads each word on an ice-cream scoop and determines
whether the vowel sound is long or short.
7. The pupil then stacks the scoop above the correct cone.
8. The pupil checks his or her own work by looking on the backs of the ice-cream scoops.
