an underdog cat in a gladiatorial world
Age 6-10
TV Series
Comedy-adventure

The Concept
Ancient Rome ruled by cats!
Spartapuss is a comedy adventure animation set 2000 years ago in a
parallel world where cats rule ancient Rome.
Spartapuss himself is mild-mannered dreamer, happily working in a spa.
But he offends the spoilt young Caligula and is thrown into gladiator school.
Non-violent Spartapuss is befriended by spear specialist Gatitta from
Hisspania and Cloccus - an over-confident but big hearted boxer from
Maul. Luckily, Spartapuss discovers a magic coin made by the mysterious
Mewids. When he learns to control the coin, the three friends escape from
the gladiator school. On a quest to return to Spartapuss’s home in the land
of the Kitons (Wales), the three must evade the traps of the deliciously evil
Catligula. Can Spartapuss win his freedom and get safely home?
“Fighting battles with a trident is quite
hard when you’re non-violent!”
Characters
Spartapuss
‘Don’t call me Spartan! They named
me Spartapuss because I’m a cat
who works in a spa!”
Spartapuss was happy working in
the spa but it all went wrong when
he offended the evil Catligula and
got sent to gladiator school.
Spartapuss is peaceful by
nature, and he believes that
disagreements should be solved
by talking things through. At
gladiator school, he naively tries
to make the arena a safer place
for everyone.
Spartapuss: “Careful Gatitta -
that stick looks sharp.’
Gattita: “It’s a spear - it’s
supposed to be sharp!”
Non-violent Spartapuss must
use his wits to survive as learns
that Fortune favours the brave -
not the risk averse!
Spartapuss
VOICE: Spartapuss starts off calm but
escalates through various stages of
panic. We chose a youthful Welsh voice
for Spartapuss - because he comes from
The Land of the Kitons. He was brought
to Rome when he was young and he has
always wanted to return to his homeland.
This ‘returning home’ idea gets explored
as the series develops.
Spartapuss has an uncanny habit
of saying EXACTLY the wrong
thing, to the wrong character, at
the wrong time. As he puts it:
“If the words the hang around
your brain for too long, they
come out all rotten.’

Gattita
It would be impossible for Spartapuss to survive the perils of the arena without
the two friends he makes in the gladiator school.
Gattita fights with a
spear like the heroes
of old. She takes no
nonsense from
Spartapuss and her
lightning reflexes and
courage often saves
the trio of friends from
disaster.
Girls (and boys) will root for this
feisty female from the mountains
of Hisspania (Spain). Go Gatitta!
If the otherwise admirable
Gatitta has a fault it is her quick
temper. She tends to make
hasty decisions and be a bit
judgemental.
Cloccus
Gattita: “Don’t eat that
Spartapuss. It’s rubbish!’
Cloccus:
“Where he comes from,
ALL the food is rubbish!”
Gattita: “In my land we
take up the spear when
we are one year old!’
Spartapuss:
“Haven’t you heard of
balls of string?”
Cloccus is a boxer from Maul (France) with
a big heart and a great line in dry wit.
Cloccus is fighting a losing battle to keep
Spartapuss out of danger. Unlike the
no nonsense Gattita, Cloccus is easily led
and often gets drawn into Spartapuss’s
flights of fancy.

Catligula
Co-staring alongside Spartapuss is the
spoilt young Imperial cat - Catligula.
Catligula always needs to be the centre
of attention. Spoilt from his kitten hood,
this power crazed cat is mad, bad and
dangerous to stroke!
He starts Series 1 as the Emperor’s
favourite and the heir to the cushioned
throne. In episode 12 he becomes the
Emperor and the madness esculates
as he makes his pet rat a senator,
declares war on the sea etc.
Catligula has a passion for the
spectacular: games, theatre, fashion,
chariot racing, wild beast hunting, a
musical about himself (Hail Me!)
Each of his schemes is created to
as place him as the sole center of
attention.
Catligula: “Good luck my
brave cats! Fight well in
the uniforms that I, your
soon-to be Caesar have
designed. If Fortune
smiles on you, Rome will
remember this day for a
long time.’
Catligula’s plots are inadvertently
disrupted by Spartapuss, or they go
wrong due to over-elaboration - in a
classic cartoon way.
But beware! Catligula’s mood can
turn in an instant. This makes him a
extremely watchable villain.
Warrior:
“Rome won’t forget these
shorts in a hurry.”

The Darnarian
In episode 1, Catligula tosses a coin to decide Spartapuss’s fate
and it accidently drops it into the arena. The coin is the legendary
Darnarian - a magic coin with the power to change fortune.
Spartapuss later discovers that the coin was made by the mysterious
Mewids back in his homeland - the Land of the Kitons. Words spoken
in Welsh will unlock the coin’s magic and get Spartapuss out of
trouble - if only he can remember where he put it!
Eventually Gatitta gets sick of Spartapuss losing the Darnarian and
mounts the coin in the hilt of his trident.

FELINIUS
The owner of the gladiator school is notoriously
careful with his money. He’s famous for his
‘short paws and long pockets’. In fact there’s
practically nothing he won’t do to turn a profit.
When he finds out about Spartapuss’s magic
coin, he can’t wait to get his paws on it.
VOICE: think Oliver Reed.
Felinius
MEWLIA
The Emperor’s scheming grandmother is known for
her jewelled collars and her acid tongue. Mewlia is
cutting and funny. She always puts Catligula in his
place.
VOICE: noble and lady-like: think Dame Maggie Smith.
Mewlia

CHARACTERS
DOGRUN
A beast of a cat from the forests of Purrmania
(Germany). Dogren is the head instructor at
the gladiator school. Despite his intimidating
physical presence he has a amusing
personality and a way of winding up his boss
Felinius.
VOICE: this gentle giant has a voice a
like German comedian Henning Wehn.
Dogrun
TABWEN
Tabwen is Spartapuss’s mother. She does
practically everything a good mother shouldn’t do.
She lost the family cooking pot in a game of dice. She
cut up her son’s ball of string to sell at the summer
fayre. Worst of all, she abandoned Spartapuss
down a well when she was on the run from Roman
justice! In series two, Spartapuss finds out that the
only present she ever gave him - the Darnarian
coin - was in fact stolen from the Mewids.
Spartapuss finds a scroll with a list of what he thinks
are his mother’s favourite sayings. They turn out
to be magic words in the Mewid language (Welsh)
that control the Darnarian.

QUEEN BOUDICAT
In Land of the Kitons (Britain) Spartapuss
meets Queen Boudicat - the warrior queen
of the Micini tribe. She wants Spartapuss
to join her rebellion against Rome.
THE MEWIDS
The Mewids are the mysterious druid cats.
Their magic words (spoken in Welsh) unlock
the coin of Fortune. The arch Mewid think
that Spartapuss stole the darnarian coin. He
wants revenge. planned unless he can prove
his innocence.
The Arch Mewid (druid cat).
VOICE: think Ellis James.

Baddies
Can Spartapuss survive?
Spartapuss must get past a number of fearsome opponents on his quest...
The Spartoi - monsters spawned
from dragon’s teeth.
The Cyclaw - a giant who fights
using ESP.
Rory the tiger - watch Spartapuss
come face to face with Rory in the
clip at www.spartapusstv.co.uk
The Minopaw - a stone statue that
comes to life.

Spartapuss is a comedy adventure set in a world ruled by cats. Our unlikely ginger hero
must dodge danger after danger. Can he escape the cunning plots of the evil Catligula
and win his freedom?
• Spartapuss author Robin Price has re imagined his books for an international
TV audience of 6-10’s.
• Spartapuss is for the same audience that love Dragons: Race to the Edge or Kung Fu
Panda - but it has a European setting.
• Comedy will suddenly change into threat as our ginger hero faces the ludicrous plots
and whims of the deliciously evil Catligula.
• We’re going for the ‘propulsive serialization’ approach where a backstory line develops
every 3 or 4 episodes. Each episode resolves so you can still watch them in any order
- but if you watch them sequentially them you’ll feel a progression.
• With 9 Spartapuss books and a whole Feline Empire to draw upon, we can offer either
26 x 11 or 52 x 11 mins.
• High parental approval means great co-viewability.
• Scripts are available on request.
In each episode, Catligula comes up with a new plot, invention
or spectacular event that puts Spartapuss in peril. Only his
friends (and the magic coin) can save him.

the Darnarian - a magic coin made by the mysterious Mewids which has the power
to change fate. Dogren has sorted out his equiptment and soon the tiger is released
again. But when Spartapuss reads the inscription on the coin, the tiger magically
shrinks in size. Catligula blames Felinius for trying to cheat him out of a show.
Spartapuss has survived his first test in the arena.
Spartapuss: “What’s your name?’
Tiger: “Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaooor!”
Spartapuss: “Rory - is it? A word
of advice on your first day Rory.
Never EAT the tools of your trade.’
Gatitta:“Spartapuss!!! It’s a
tiger!”
cleaner.’

Spartapuss: “Nice sand castle?’
Cloccus:
“Sand castle?!! What sand castle?!
That’s a highly accurate scale model.
A masterpiece mon ami.”
Episode in depth
Episode 2: Respect the sausage
Safety conscious Spartapuss has been busy raking the sand on the arena floor to
make it completely flat. Misunderstanding Spartapuss’s safety mission but wanting
to join in, Cloccus has been creating a scale model of the arena made of sand.
Gattita thinks the pair of them are mad and continues to practice her spear skills.
A team of Purrmanian battle cats arrives for the games, led by the fearsome Klawdia.
She and the team trample on Spartapuss’s ‘flat sand sector’. When Spartapuss
protests, she smashes a massive hole in the floor, wrecking his lovely flat sand.
Klawdia is about to flatten Spartapuss too, but Gatitta leaps to his rescue.
Meanwhile, fashion-conscious Catligula unveils the special uniforms he has
personally designed for the visiting team. In keeping with the Purrmanian theme,
he has replaced their swords with Purrmanian sausages! Catligula insists that they
must honour him by raising their swords in a synchronised salute. When the match
stars, Spartapuss is under pressure but the salute causes chaos. Clocuss’s sand
castle survives. Spartapuss eats the enemies’ sausages. His words of warning
come back to haunt Klawdia when the Purrmanians fall into the hole they created.
When the bell rings to announce that the match is over, Spartapuss thinks that
dinner is served but accidently smashes’ Cloccus’s sand castle masterpiece.
Catligula: “What is
Purrmania famous for?”
Purrmanian:
“Our catchy folk music?”
Klawdia:
“Our surprisingly dry
sense of humour?”
Catligula:
“Wrong! Guess again.”
Purrmanian 1”
“Er... we have a thirtymetre
high wooden pillar in
the Neuterberger forest.”
Catligula:
“No! No! No! I’m talking
about your sausages.’

Episode 17: Shark Anthony
Setting: The ocean
Spartapuss and friends are on the run from gladiator school trying to get back to
the land of the Kitons. The friends stow away on a ship. They wake up to find that
a shark-powered galley is chasing them. It belongs to Catligula, who built it as a
birthday present for his grandmother Mewlia. She is also aboard along with Felinius
(who wants to recapture Spartapuss and friends).
Felinius admires the ship’s special features: killer shark boost, octopuss drag net
etc. Next to the wheel is a VIP seat with a lever. When Felenious asks what it is for,
Catligula insists that nobody is allowed to pull the lever except for him!
Spartapuss decides that to save his friends, he must meet Felinius and explain why
they left the school. Using the coin to ward off the shark, he jumps overboard to
swim over to Catligula’s ship to give himself up. Cloccus and Gatitta try to rescue
him but Gattitta is too proud to admit that she can’t swim. Cloccus ends up rescuing
Gattitta. Spartapuss loses control of the coin, the shark chases him and he only
just makes it to the Imperial galley. Catligula’s galley sinks when Spartapuss pulls
a lever that makes it collapsible. (A feature that Catligula insisted on installing to
get rid of unwanted guests). Spartapuss escapes back to his own ship. Catligula
is about to get eaten by his pet shark - Shark Anthony - until Mewlia steps in and
gives the shark a lesson in manners.
Mewlia (watching Spartapuss being chased by a shark):
“What IS that ridiculous Kiton doing?”
Caligula:
“About 5 stokes per minute. But I’m improving his
time.”
Mewlia:
“Catligula!!! Where will this end?”
Episode in depth
Catligula:
“At The Olympuss Games
I hope. He can swim faster.
The only limit is the size of
the shark.’

Episode 16: Runaway ratus
Setting: The Palace
Spartapuss notices a rat stuck in a pipe. He frees the unfortunate creature,
only to find out that it is Ratus Ratus - Catligula’s favourite pet! Catligula
believes that Ratus has been stolen by rebels and sends his legions out
to look for it. He offers a life’s supply of cream to anyone who can find the
runaway rat.
Felinius is determined to catch Ratus and collect the reward and he sets the
city on fire in order to flush the rats out of their nests.
Ratus reveals his true identity. He admits that he has run away from the
Imperial Palace because he misses his home. This makes Spartapuss think
about his own home in the land of the Kitons. Spartapuss and friends decide
to sneak Ratus out in disguise.
Spartapuss: “Come out of that pipe.”
Ratus: “I’m stuck! (echo) I’m stuck... I’m stuck...!”
Spartapuss: “All THREE of you?”
Ratus: “It’s just me. That was an echo...
echo.... echo...”
Spartapuss: “Well tell Echo to stop messing
around. And get out of that hole! The
streets are on fire.”
Education
Spartapuss is a great way of getting children interested in history. It gives children
gripping stories and memorable characters that they can relate to.
Here’s what some teachers and educational publications have to say:
‘A great way to interest children in history.’
http://www.parentsintouch.co.uk/
‘We have been using Spartapuss and Boudicat as the basis for our crosscurricluar
teaching, reading the books in literacy and creating writing tasks
to run alongside. The children have greatly enjoyed listening to the books
and the tasks that have accompanied them. ’
– Paul Nolan (Deputy Head, Stoke Park Junior School)
‘(Cleocatra’s Kushion) is silly enough that it doesn’t feel like a history
lesson at all. Fun for kids and adults with an interest in ancient history too.
4 stars out of 5’ - www.thebookbag.co.uk
“An exciting series … three really good books... thrillers that you can’t
put down ’til you’ve read the whole thing!’
– Flora Murray, The Journal of Classics Teaching
