Autumn Programme 2018
1
Where learning and practice meet.
Autumn 2018
We begin this season on a note of
sadness. In May, Bath Artists’ Studios
longest serving member Edward
Lewis passed away. Edward was the
first artist to move in to the studios
after its foundation by David Cobley.
A passionate artist often working in
his studio late into the night, his life
and work were celebrated by friends
and colleagues with a retrospective
exhibition in the Roper Gallery in July.
Autumn 2018 brings us a great deal
to look forward to. The season
really gets into the swing of things
with our annual Open Studios (28-
30 September), this includes our
fundraising Silent Auction in partnership
with Art At The Heart of the RUH. We
are also introducing new new classes
held both at BAS and with our partners
at Town Hall Arts in Trowbridge.
From October onwards the Roper
Gallery changes from its previous role
as a hireable exhibition space to a
curated gallery, this season we will be
welcoming exhibitions including ‘She
Did That: Celebrating Female Artists
Working in the Music Industry, Bath
Spa University Students and a oneperson
exhibition by Manchester based
painter Peter Seal in conjunction with
Anthony Hepworth Fine Art
Dealers.
EDWARD LEWIS 1936-2018
As you would expect from a prolific artist who practised for over fifty years, Ed
Lewis created a vast body of work. From paintings and drawings to collages that
burst out of their rectangular origins, no style or discipline could contain the immense
energy and passion he had for art. It’s impossible to separate his character from his
work. He was an engaging and amusing raconteur, irreverent and eccentric. Thus
a short walk became a journey, a map became an atlas, each new work a station
on the way. There was no destination just a continuum so skilfully improvised. His
work was like a sentence that would unfurl itself into a memoir. No surface or object
was left untouched and although he was a technically excellent artist the orthodox
couldn’t contain his energy and ideas. From the first line, mark or gesture he was
off transforming the prosaic into a rich and inspired tapestry of unbridled creativity.
Envelopes, boxes, newspaper, toilet rolls were employed when an idea or impulse
came to him, he just reached out for nearest object and went to work. I once saw him
take off his pullover and cut it into shapes just because he couldn’t find the shade and
body of the burgundy he needed, from a tube. He carried on working in his vest.
Ed always seemed that he was at odds with the rectangle, disliked framing his work,
and would only do so for the sake of galleries and exhibitions that demanded it.
Although he wanted to be successful and recognised, it would have to be on his own
terms. He found the rules oppressive and unnecessary. They certainly didn’t apply to
him and in the end it cost him the recognition he so richly deserved. Although he was
a modest unassuming man, as an artist he was fiercely courageous in his approach
and in the defence of his ideas and passions. I had the pleasure and privilege of
sharing the same studios as Ed for 18 years and I always valued his feedback,
it was honest (to the
point where it could hurt)
and so well informed and
erudite. The pleasure
was in that wry smile,
the glint in his eye and
the stories that so often
exposed the stupidities
of the universe. We both
shared a love of poetry,
it seems appropriate,
in respect of Ed, that I
quote the American poet
Robert Lowell:
“My eye can see what
my hand has done”
NEW WEBSITE FOR BAS
We are delighted to announce that our new website at
www.bathartistsstudios.co.uk is now live. Built by Bath based web
developer Blispa the new site includes more informative and ‘user friendly’
features such as an interactive calendar. The site will be your one stop shop
for all classes, exhibitions, news, events and projects organised by BAS and
its community.
SUMMER RESIDENCY EXCHANGE
Building on the success of last year, Bath Artists’ Studios and Town Hall
Arts, Trowbridge have teamed up again to host artists from each other’s
communities. Our aim is to foster dialogue and communication between
creative artists within our area.
This year Bath Artists’ Studios welcomes Marianne Micoud Flewitt, an artist
exploring colour theory through abstraction. Marianne will be exhibiting her
work in the Roper Gallery from Monday 3rd to Thursday 16th of September.
Meanwhile, BAS artist Angel Greenham has been working in the historic cells
at Trowbridge Town Hall. Angel is a multi-disciplinary artist exploring the
vacuum created by technological advance as a space for expressing notions
of escapism and the uncanny.
Open Studios 2018
28 – 30 September
Opening party: Friday 28 September 6.30-9.30pm
Studios Open 29-30 September 11.00am – 5.00pm
Live music, exhibitions, bars, café, workshops and of course a chance to
meet our artists, Autumn 2018 comes in with a bang at Bath Artists’ Studios
in this popular annual fixture of our calendar.
The weekend gets going with a launch party on Friday (6.30-9.30pm)
including Latin and Gypsy Jazz from Manos Puestas, catering by The Pizza
Bike, licensed bars and the opening of our entire building including studios,
and the gallery where we’ll be showing works by local and studio based
artists in our Silent Auction (see details below). The weekend continues on
Saturday and Sunday with a chance to view studios, exhibitions, take part in
workshops and (of course) sample the delicious food and drink at our popup
café.
SILENT AUCTION 2018
Featuring some of Bath’s most prominent artists, our ‘Silent Auction 2018’
fundraiser once again sees Bath Artists’ Studios collaborating with the Royal
United Hospital’s Art At The Heart arts and wellbeing team. This year we
have introduced some significant changes. Whilst the visual arts is one of
the most poorly paid sectors in the economy, artists are frequently called
upon to donat their time and work free of charge to support good causes.
Recognising this, we have decided to split proceeds equally between the
artists and ourselves as beneficiaries of the auction. For the buyer, this
means that their purchase will support an artist as well as the work of the
studios and our colleagues at the Royal United Hospital. With reserve prices
from under £100 this year’s works range of size and medium, for the first
time introducing three dimensional sculpture and design.
Works will be exhibited in the South Corridor at the Royal United Hospital
from 10th August until 24th September transferring to The Roper Gallery for
our Open Studios Weekend (28th-30th September).
Marianne Micoud Flewitt
Town Hall Arts and Bath Artists’ Studios Residency Exchange
Monday 3 – Sunday 16 September, 12-5pm
Reception, Thursday 6 September 6-8pm
Over the last two years, artists from the communities of practice focussed
on Town Hall Arts in Trowbridge and Bath Artists’ Studios have exchanged
residencies over the Summer. This year at BAS we welcome painter
Marianne Micoud Flewitt.
EXHIBITIONS
‘I am a visual artist exploring abstraction through colour theory. My artwork
so far carries a theme of evoking personal reflection. I choose to create
this response through colour and surface. As the result of my process, I
achieve different interpretations of my paintings making them subjective and
unique to every individual. My work develops through the artists’ and the art
observers’ response to my work. Therefore, it is imperative to have an active
and ongoing interaction with my audience and fellow artists.’
Suze Adams and Linda Ashe
Wednesday 19 – Saturday 22 September
10am – 3.30pm weekdays, 10am – 4.00pm Saturday
Suze Adams and Linda
Ashe share conceptual
concerns yet express
their ideas in radically
different and distinct
ways - this work-inprogress
installation
including photography,
film, sound and
sculpture. The show
reveals new works from
both artists on themes
of: loss and memory
(feelings of presence
in absence); embodied
experience (physical and
psychological expression); the fluid nature of time and the concrete actuality of
mortality.
We hope the show will provoke discussion around these themes so do come
and view these intriguing artworks. Suze and Linda will be working in the gallery
throughout so please
feel free to share your
thoughts about the
various pieces with the
artists and learn more
about the thinking
behind the making.
Peter Seal: Paintings and Collages
Thursday 22 November - Thursday 11 December, 12-5pm
Opening Night, Thursday November 22, 6-8pm
Peter Seal’s abstract paintings and collages invite meditative engagement,
evoking a range of moods through his handling of colour and form.
The exhibition includes examples of early work in which colour relationships
are explored through minimal geometric forms. These paintings are the
product of sustained contemplation and typically convey a sense of deep
time.
In recent years, Peter has begun to work on small monochrome collages
as a focussed way of exploring composition. This has led on to a
series of larger black and white compositions on canvas which have an
immediate dramatic quality, as well as structural developments in his
colour compositions. Peter has been based in Manchester for over three
decades, having trained at Manchester Polytechnic in the 1980s following a
BA in Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee.
“His work has substance and integrity; its quality is indisputable.’
Dr Ian Massey 2014
This exhibition is organised in conjunction with Peter Seal’s representative,
Anthony Hepworth Fine Art Dealers.
About Angela Street And Playwriting Salisbury
‘I run Playwriting Salisbury+ and work as a freelance Writer, Mentor, Tutor, Script
Reader, Dramaturg. I was recently awarded The Writers’ Guild Olwen Wymark
Theatre Award for my work with new writing, especially working with women. I’m
an accredited Writing Coach (Arvon, NAWE, RD1st), hold an MA in Scriptwriting
with distinction, and have been a dedicated supporter of new writers for 25 years.
I encourage playfulness and risk-taking in the use of language, form and content.
I’ve worked with a number of artists including Charlotte Moreton, ceramicist Mirka
Golden-Hahn, and Gini at Salisbury Arts Centre, and I’ve run art/writing projects
with Salisbury Fringe where I ran workshops and produced a series of short plays
based on the paintings of Frida Kahlo and another on William Blake. Some of my
poetry has been incorporated into art exhibitions. I’m interested in how writing can
be exhibited to a wider public. A former Scriptwriting Tutor with the Open
University, I now run scriptwriting courses in Salisbury and throughout the
South West.’
