Editor's message

Dear Neighbours,

In the weeks following the magazine’s

distribution each month, I am always very

happy when I hear the sound of the daily post

arriving and I see the many entries to the various

reader competitions. Alongside those, in the last

two months it was a lovely surprise to receive

handwritten cards & letters from happy readers

of The Didcot Directory. Even more of you have

emailed useful feedback and words of

encouragement about the magazine when

entering the ‘Where’s Jenny?’ competition.

-Muddy Mayhem is on again this year. There are

still several weeks to prepare: it will happen on

7th October. It’s a Family Charity Obstacle Fun

Run, so you can choose to walk, run, spectate or

sponsor, and in the process help local charities.

-The Reading Dragonboat Festival this year will

be on Sunday 19th August. Whether you want to

enter a team or simply spectate, it promises to

be great fun again. Visit

Resident experts Shaw Gibbs continue the series

The Green Gathering 2018

2nd - 5th August

ith more and more of us trying to do our

best to be green and not harmful to the

environment, The Green Gathering hopes

to put us in touch with our eco-friendly side.

Despite unhelpful and worrying recent policy

announcements coming from the new US

Administration in the White House, almost

everyone is aware of how human actions affect

the planet and lots of us are doing at least a

little to help preserve it.

The Green Gathering began in a small way in

1994. It has grown into one of the foremost

celebrations of greener lifestyles with music,

healing and information about the state of our

Earth. In November 2017, the Gathering was

awarded the prize for “The Greener Festival” in

recognition of its outstanding commitment to

reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

It is now a four day camping event - four days

of low impact living in an area of outstanding

natural beauty - the countryside near Chepstow,

the historic Welsh border town just 18 miles

from Bristol and about 125 miles from London.

Attracting 20,000 people at its peak, the

festival is for people who care about health,

the environment, sustainability, the future of

our children and life in general.

Described as ‘a festival beyond hedonism’ The

Green Gathering aims to educate as it

entertains. The first festival to recognise glitter

as microplastic pollution, the organisers insist

glitter, if used, is 100% biodegradable and safe

for wildlife and marine life. All food on sale is

vegetarian. In 2017 a third of the foodstalls were

vegan, all cups and glasses were compostable or

reuseable and 73% of the festival’s waste was

recycled. The Green Gathering was also the first

UK event to sign up to Take A Stand, a new

European movement promoting social cohesion,

community participation, peaceful dialogue,

humanism and tolerance.

Every day news reports bring tales of

environmental disaster; polluted air, melting ice

caps, another species driven to the point of

extinction. We feel helpless in the face of

Governments who promise much, yet do

little. The Green Gathering is a festival with a

message and a mission. They aim to prove that

we can do something, however small to benefit

our planet.

They stage demonstrations and talks, providing

practical information as well as laying on music

and fun.

The message is clear: if we all do a little, it adds

up to a lot. Together we can save our planet.
