MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE
Shock, disbelief, sorrow...these are only some of the emotions I experienced
when I heard the news of Ms Veronica Riggs’ passing on Thursday morning.
I would like to express our sincere condolences to Veronica’s family. She will
always have a special place in our hearts. I will always cherish the kind-hearted,
soft-spoken Veronica that had the well-being of every little one at our Castle at
heart. May her soul rest in peace.
Over the past few weeks we had so many highlights in all areas of our school life:
outstanding soccer results, two high school rugby teams winning their provincial
leagues and playing in the play-offs, our primary school tennis teams performing
very well and beating top primary schools in our area for the first time, our u.16
hockey girls playing in the Noordvaal final (another first), a teacher (Mr Glen Attwell)
received provincial colours in cross country, our junior and senior cricket teams
starting their season with a bang... all of this bears testimony to the hard work of
our learners and teachers. Thank you to you all. We are looking forward to our
junior choir, high school drama group and high school choir performing in the State
Theatre in the coming week during the Tshwane Youth Arts Festival. I wish them all
of the best! This is a wonderful opportunity – CARPE DIEM!
Thank you to every family for your support of our soap box day and the
accompanying fundraising. We do appreciate every effort in raising funds for our
school. The high school pantomime is in its final stages of preparation and we are
all looking forward to the performance by our talented high school learners early in
September.
September is our “anti-bullying” campaign month. We will put all our efforts
into driving this campaign in our schools during September. We will launch this
campaign at the end of August with posters and awareness in our schools.
In due course, we will send out letters and notifications regarding important
meetings I would like to schedule on key matters. Please attend these meetings
and take part in the conversation about our school and our future.
Kind regards
Ferdi Niemand
HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
With term 3 well on its way, we
are working hard towards
our targets. You may ask,
‘How did we get to those targets?”
On the first day of school we as a staff,
sat down per grade and reviewed the
marks of the whole school, per subject,
until 21:00. We looked at learners who
struggled with one or two subjects and
their parents were formally invited to
Parents’ Evening. The learners who
struggled with more subjects were
invited to a panel discussion with their
parents during the following few weeks.
The meetings were attended by all
staff as far as possible, barring sports
fixtures. These panel discussions were
in no way an inquisition to find culprits
or to point fingers, but rather aimed at
finding solutions and setting targets. All
the information gathered from Parents’
Evening and the panel discussions
was used to devise a subject specific
intervention plan by every teacher - to
be implemented immediately.
Our core business is still academics.
Please help and support us in pushing
the limit. It is of grave concern to me
how many learners are signed out early
during the school day. Be mindful that
any learner signed out before 09:00
in the morning is deemed absent.
Intentions are great but attending one
and a half lessons does not constitute
being present at school. The world out
there is just not that forgiving. Although
the term 3 marks will consist of tests and
assignments, it is a term where marks are
easier to come by. We find that learners
paint themselves into a corner due to a
lack of planning and use the excuse that
two assignments must be submitted in
the same week. Exactly for that purpose,
assessment planners are handed out a
term in advance. Assignments which
take longer to complete were handed out
at the beginning of the term and shorter
assignments are handed out a week
before the due date. Not to generalize,
but our learners think that being absent
on the same day as the due date is a
solution to the problem. A 10% deduction
for submitting an assessment each day
later than the due date is such a wasted
opportunity.
We were blessed by the performances
of our On the Tip of your Tongue and
Oppitongaf orators and I can see the
positive influence of these public speaking
competitions, along with the ATKV and
Toastmasters, in the way that our future
prefects had to sell themselves on stage
during our last assembly. The gift of
the gab is still the key to success. It is
with great anticipation that we await the
opening of the pantomime (the posters
are up!) along with the choir and Breyten
& Blake performance at the Tshwane
Youth Arts Festival. We also ran a
successful week of Drug awareness with
a number of guest speakers informing
our learners on all the dangers.
well. Cross-country, cricket, golf and
soccer are now the current flavours and
after a great soccer camp, we expect
great things from the boys.
We wish all our Grade 12 learners
and parents just the best towards the
preparation and writing of the preliminary
exams. May God bless every one of our
family.
Last Saturday, our u/16 hockey girls
made Curro Roodeplaat history by being
our first sports side playing in the final of
the Noord Vaal competition. Even though
Curro won the trophy, unfortunately, we
were the runners up. Our hockey girls
lost 0 - 1 to Curro Heuwelkruin. By the
way, they beat us 9 - 0 last year. YOU
GO GIRLS. Both our u/15 and u/17 rugby
boys lost in the round of sixteen. Marcelle
GIRLS HOCKEY
Our hockey season for the girls officially ended after our u/16 girls were involved in
the Noordvaal play-offs. We can say with pride that our girls had a historic year in
2018.
Our girls played their hearts out during the season and became the first team in
our history to reach the final of the Noordvaal competition. On our way to the final
we achieved a 4 – 1 victory in the quarter-finals as well as a 8 – 0 victory in the
semi-finals. We came up against Curro Heuwelkruin in the final at Vanderbijl Park.
Unfortunately, we lost the match 1 – 0, but our girls played with determination during
the entire match.
We are extremely proud of every single girl as well as the coaches who made 2018
a rememberable year.
SOCCER
Soccer also kicked off at full pace at the high school with our first match of the term
against Crawford College. Our u/15 team played to a 0 – 0 draw and our first team
lost 3 – 1.
The u/15 and 1st team rectified matters in their next match against Curro Academy
Pretoria which took place at Curro Roodeplaat. Our u/15 team played to a 1-1 draw
and the 1st the first team won comfortably 3 – 1.
GOLF
We played our first league match for the year against Die Wilgers with our first
team and we could not have asked for a better start. At the end we comfortably won
against Die Wilgers.
Our next fixture was against Pretoria Boys High at Waterkloof golf course. We
narrowly missed out on another victory, but at the end of the day Pretoria Boys High
ended up as the winners of this match.
THE PRIMARY SCENE
It is almost end of August – unbelievable how fast time went by! As a school we
have accomplished many highlights the past month…
We are proud of our learners who have excelled on cultural and sporting levels.
This includes cross country, tennis, hockey and mini-hockey, cricket, equestrian,
eisteddfods and the upcoming Tshwane Youth Arts Festival. Read more about these
achievements in the different articles.
On the academic side we are full steam at work with class projects and some term
tests have already been written. Please take note that grade R to grade 7 learners
must attend all classes till the end of their respective school day. We kindly request
that doctors’ appointments been scheduled during the afternoons.
Just a reminder that the “drop-off zone” only makes provision for vehicles to stop,
drop the learners and immediately drive off again. No parking is allowed. Please
keep this rule in mind to make the traffic flow easier for all.
Sponsor forms for our yearly soapbox have already been handed out to you child.
Thank you for the funds that have already been paid in. The competition between
the classes run high and learners are looking forward to the weekly announcement
PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORT
CRICKET
Our league started early in the season with matches against Eduplex.
For our second match we played agains Southdowns College with our three teams,
namely the u.9, u.11 and u.13 team. Unfortunately, we lost these games.
In our next match we played against Curro Thatchfield. The u.13 team delivered an
excellent performance with a victory of 157 runs.
We are very excited to see how our boys will be performing for the rest of the season
and we wish them the best of luck.
HOCKEY
The hockey season finally kicked off and the learners are going full steam ahead.
Matches in 2018 moved to the schools fields which brings forth the opportunity for our
learners to play on our ASTRO court at the high school.
Our first match took place against Riveria primary school where our u.11 and u.13
girls played.
The boys first match took place on the ASTRO against Christian Brothers’ School.
Unfortunately, we lost both these matches.
SOCCER
Soccer also started at the primary school with our first match for the u.11 and u.13
teams playing at Deutsche Schule Pretoria. Our u.11 team unfortunately lost 2 – 0 and
the u.13 team lost 2 – 1.
The u.13 team rectified the previous loss when playing against Max Stibbe at Curro
Roodeplaat. Our boys comfortably won the match 11 – 0.
TENNIS
Our tennis league kicked off on a high note. The under 13 boys played their first
match against Laerskool Stephanus Roos and won 29-26. A first for Roodeplaat.
They played very well against Totiusdal as well and won 39-17. Well done boys! We
are extremely proud of you. Keep up the hard work.
EQUESTRIAN
Congratulations to Haylee Duarte and Kingsdale for participating in the Gauteng finals.
She received a third, fifth, twelfth and two thirteenth places. She receives Gauteng
DIRK VAN DER WESTHUIZEN VISITS
CURRO ROODEPLAAT
Dirk van der Westhuizen, a popular
singer, surprised one of our classes
with a quick visit after he heard that
they are some of his biggest fans. He
brought a CD for each and they, in
return showed him that they know every
dance move from his latest hit “Die
tennis tune”. This was without a doubt a
day they will always remember!
THEY SURE CAN DANCE
Larissa Botha and Mieke Greyling were
chosen to dance with Arno Jordaan on
Saturday, 28 July at “Afrikaans gaan
klein”. This show was held at Weiveld
in Pretoria. Both girls have been dancing
for 6 years and were very privileged
to be chosen for this occasion. Two
shows were held, and both were sold
out- meaning that over 2000 people
attended.
There were only 5 dancers chosen to
perform for this occasion.
Arno Jordaan was the host and the
opening act. Only 5 dancers were chosen
to dance in the opening act with
him – definitely a mammoth moment for
our very own Larissa and Mieke!
