THE WHARF RAT RALLY MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
Welcome to the 14th Annual Wharf Rat Rally, the annual Atlantic Canadian
rally to end every summer!
From Share the Wind tours to closing fireworks, be sure to enjoy the contests,
stunt shows, vendors, and music offered every day.
Our custom builders are a crowd favourite and this year we welcome Jesy
Renaud and Classic Steel from Chateauguay, Quebec. Joining him will be two
other new builders, Hard Way Cycles and Chop It Cycles. Catch an ice cream
sandwich and be sure to cast your ballot for your favourite custom motorcycle
on Saturday afternoon.
Enjoy our great roads whether joining one of our guided tours to Bear River
and Annapolis Royal, Belliveau Cove, Brier Island or the new Maudie Tour.
Bean’re’s tours have an added element on Monday, from Windsor through
Wilmot to Middleton. Head out with the 2nd CAVs to the Afghanistan Memorial
in Hebron, or out on your own for the Clare Poker Run.
Please remember to thank a volunteer. Without their help with Rat Rods, the
biker games and obstacle course, the contests, registration and retail areas,
the Wharf Rat Rally would not have continued to grow on the vision of its
founders, Peter Robertson and Alex Joannides.
The Wharf Rat Rally recognizes the support of the Province of Nova Scotia.
We are pleased to work in partnership with the Department of Communities,
Culture and Heritage to develop and promote our cultural resources for all
Nova Scotians. It is the help of the Province, the Municipalities of Digby, Clare,

FRIENDLY REMINDER
A friendly reminder that this is a family event and we
are asking for your cooperation in ensuring that all
visitors and citizens enjoy it to the fullest.
Below are some Nova Scotia and Town of Digby laws that apply to motorcyclists.
This is not a complete list, but it is a reminder of some of the issues we ask your
assistance with.
While Nova Scotia and the Town of Digby have not yet begun a significant crack
down on loud pipes, we do have Excessive Noise Laws and Bylaws.
Burnouts or wheel stands are not allowed on any public roads. Police will also
intervene if your driving interferes with public safety anywhere.
Montague Row, Water Street and Birch Street are one-way northbound 24 hours
a day from Friday, August 31st at 8 am until Monday, September 3rd at 8 am. If
barricades are in place, those streets are open to motorcycle traffic only.
Nova Scotia's open liquor container law is vigorously enforced during the bike
rally. Unless you want to be fined $435.00 keep it unopened if riding, and stay on
private property once it's opened. Downtown streets are public property; open
liquor is not allowed.
This is a family event, public intoxication and disorderly conduct will not be
tolerated by the police.
Motorcycles must not be driven more than two abreast in a single lane. Do not
pass a car in the same lane.
Nova Scotia laws state that approved helmets are required for all riders.

Rally taking place in beautiful Digby. As one
of the premier events in Southwest Nova
Scotia, this family-friendly motorcycle rally has
been a long-time attraction for motorcyclists
and non-motorcyclists alike, from near and
afar.
The Government of Nova Scotia recognizes the value of events such as this
one. Events showcase our province’s heritage, culture, scenic beauty and
competitive advantages to national and international audiences, while
growing capacity, attracting new visitors and generating new and significant
economic growth.
Over the next few days, you will see why events, such as the Wharf Rat Rally,
are succeeding in Nova Scotia. Going above and beyond is what our people
do best and we know the people of Digby will once again deliver an

Canada’s largest family orientated multi-day motorcycle rally.

On behalf of Council and the residents of the Town, welcome
to the Wharf Rat Rally. From its humble beginnings of a
few hundred bikes to one of the largest outdoor events in
the Province of Nova Scotia in a matter of few years, Digby
continues to graciously open its doors to you.
Enjoy your time here, take in the events, enjoy the rides,
and do not forget to take in some of the finest seafood prepared at our local
restaurants, caught fresh within eyesight of the town. Walk the coastline, maybe
see a whale or two, and witness a Bay of Fundy Sunset at Point Prim Lighthouse.
Do not forget to thank the hundreds of volunteers who
help make this rally a success. Many are not bikers,
but they put hours of their time in to make this event
successful for you.
When you leave let us know what we can do to make this
even more successful and tell all your friends and family
about Digby. We will welcome them any time of the year
and I am sure they will love scallops, lobster or fish fresh

UNDER THE WAVES AT POINT PRIM
Under the Waves at Point Prim
Overlooking the Bay of Fundy, Point
Prim protects marine travellers from
the rocks surrounding her shores. The
lighthouse faces north and overlooks
the entrance to the Digby Gut. Take a
short ride out Lighthouse Road all the
way to the end and there it sits, the 4th
lighthouse built in this location dating
back to 1804.
History will tell you that the first Point Prim lighthouse burned to the ground in
1808. Its replacement was built in 1817 but it looked quite different from the
lighthouse you see today. Today’s lighthouse has a square tower rising from a
one-story flat-roofed building with its bright red stripes.
Why go to Point Prim you might ask?
Some residents might tell you to go to see
the whales. In the fall of 2016, Point Prim
witnessed a plethora of humpback whale
visitors.
Other visitors might tell you to go to Point
Prim for the amazing sunsets that paint
the sky with fireball reds and oranges.

for the Plankton, Periwinkles and
Predators Adventure Tour he gives.
Did you know that you can find 4
different types of edible seaweed
at the Point or that the barnacles
you see on whales, boats and rocks
started off as free-swimming larvae?

But we think you should go because of the shipwrecks. Pretty much any marine
coastline will have a story or two about the shipwrecks in its waters. But not all
shipwrecks have the type of happy ending that Point Prim’s have.
Here’s the story about the
Princess Louise, a steamship that
was lost off the coast of Digby
near Point Prim.
UNDER THE WAVES AT POINT PRIM
The Day was December 3, 1883 and the Princess was being towed to Scotland to
be outfitted for her engines.
During a gale, the towline between the Princess Louise
and the tow ship Newfield snapped, and the Princess
Louise was overwhelmed by the waves.
Of the eight crewmen on board, only two survived
while the other six were lost to the sea. The two
survivors escaped to the shore near Point Prim and
were rescued from the waves that were smashing with
deathly force against the rocks by the Point Prim
Lighthouse keeper, Captain William E. Ellis. One of the
survivors was Richard Soy.
Today, Rebecca Denton, great, great, great
granddaughter of Captain William E. Ellis and Nick
Bell, great, great, great grandson of Richard Soy are
engaged to be married in September. What would
the chances be that two young people with that
kind of unknown historical connection meet and
fall in love? The circle of life you might think, or the
serendipity of fate?

Share The Wind
A tradition was started in 2011 by an unidentified group of
motorcyclists who circled the Heart of the Valley Long-Term
Care property in Middleton, honking their horns and waving
to the residents.
When that didn’t happen again in 2012, the facility phoned
to voice the disappointment of the residents. So the Wharf
Rat Rally planned a return visit to Middleton for 2013.
And from there it grew.

he arrived with a
motorcycle sidecar.
Now residents could
have the feeling of wind on their faces in a very safe and comfortable environment.
These visits now reach from Windsor to Yarmouth and have stretched the Rally’s

Known as CRASHTINA, this year’s stunt rider travels
from Jacksonville, North Carolina to put on an
incredible show!
Christina and her crew will
be bringing two Kawasaki
Ninjas and two Harley-
Davidson Sportsters - that’s
four bikes in total. While
the Ninja’s and Harley’s are two totally different bikes
somehow she has mastered them both!
Christina has been stunting for six years, starting with a little Honda CBR 50 and
moving up to these bigger bikes.
She is best known for her colorful burnouts and her crazy wheelies. She now has
65k followers on Instagram and 82k likes on her Facebook page!

CORKS & FORKS TOUR AND HAWG WILD
The Corks & Forks Tour to
Bear River and Hawg Wild in the Gardens
With 17-foot-high tides, a Cherry
Carnival that has been celebrated since
1894 and one of the largest remaining
chimney swift roosts in Nova Scotia, Bear
River is just one of the many interesting
locations you’ll visit on this ride.
Enjoy the sweeping curves as you follow
the tidal river from Smith’s Cove down
to Bear River. Once there, you can browse through the artisan shops and galleries
or take the short walk back through the Peace Garden to the Wastewater Treatment
Facility that functions as a 2400 sq. ft greenhouse. This solar aquatic treatment
facility was the first of its kind in the country and Bear River was awarded the
Sustainable Communities Award in 1995 for it.
Then it’s up the hill to the Casa Nova vineyard where you can learn about the cider
craft industry, sample the Wharf Rat Rally-labeled Buddy’s Cider in plastic bottles,
and make your purchases.
After the Casa Nova tour, enjoy more rolling hills and smooth roads as you head to
Annapolis Royal where you can choose your venue for lunch before reconvening for
the short ride to the Historic Gardens.
There you can participate in Hawg Wild in
the Gardens, a truly unique opportunity
to have you and your bike photographed
in this beautiful setting. The cost for the
Hawg Wild experience is $7.50.

Artisans of Bear River
ARTISANS OF BEAR RIVER
Nestled along side the Bear River you’ll find the tidal
Village of Bear River. One of its many charms is the group
of Bear River Artisans whose works can be viewed at the
Flight of Fancy Studio owned by Rob Buckland-Nicks.
Take some time to stop and wander through this magical
place where artists from across the Maritimes display
their unique works of art.
One of the highlighted artists is Flora Doehler who
now resides in Bear River. Originally from Ontario,
Flora came to Bear River in 2007 and her paintings
reflect what she sees around her. Flora uses her
love of nature in all its colours, textures and beauty.
And of course, Rob Buckland-Nicks has his work on
display for your viewing pleasure. Perhaps the whimsical
name of the studio reflects the subjects of Rob’s
creativity. He uses stone as his canvas and paints his
birds as they are passing through – like specks in time.
With a variety of styles, mediums, objects and creativity to
choose from, everyone will find something that stirs their own
Flight of Fancy at this studio. Located at 1869 Clementsvale Road
in Bear River, the Studio Hours are: May-October: Monday to
Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 11am-5pm. Drop by and let your

a bike, walking from town, off the ferry, it doesn’t matter. Drop your ballot off
at Headquarters, the registration tent across from Headquarters or at the

Hard Way Cycles
Owner Jeff Thibault and his friend Paul Dionne
have been rebuilding and customizing bikes
for almost 20 years. They called themselves
Hard Way Cycles because they did everything
the hard way; in their home garages, on
weekends and evenings and with a budget.
Every bike Jeff has built from the beginning until current has “Hard Way Cycles”
written on it somewhere.
Originally from the Weymouth area, Jeff and his wife
Shannon now reside in Fredericton and are excited to
be a featured builder at this year’s Wharf Rat Rally.

Orangepaint Factory
Orangepaint Factory is a kustom paint shop specializing
in detail airbrush and old school pinstriping. Owner
and operator Dan Daigle has a vast history working in
the custom paint and airbrush industry and has been
airbrushing and illustrating for over 25 years. He runs a
reputable and successful business and as lead artist has
been creating award winning eye candy on motorcycles
for years. Orangepaint Factory ‘s custom paint creations
include detail airbrush, graphics, murals, pinstriping,
flames, real fire, flake, and candy colours. Our focus is

Clare ‘Acadian Shore’ Poker Run
A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
in partnership with the Digby Wharf Rat Rally 2018
and the Municipality of Clare
Two Days, Friday and Saturday
1. From Digby, turn right at exit 28 off Hwy 101 to start. Present this Scorecard at each of the 10
checkpoints (see map of Clare on the back) anytime between 9AM and 5PM Friday, August 31 st and
Saturday September 1 st . You must visit the 10 checkpoints to be eligible for prizes.
2. NEW THIS YEAR: ALL POKER CHIPS ARE $1 ( Each bag contains 100 poker chips numbered 1 – 100 ) At
each checkpoint pay $1 and draw a poker chip from the bag. If you are not satisfied with the value of the
chip you have drawn you may return it to the bag and purchase another chip for $1. There is no limit to the
number of chips which can be purchased but each chip must be returned to the bag before purchasing
another. A volunteer will add the value of the final chip selected to your scorecard and authorize your card.
Each stop supports a different local non-profit organization and total funds raised will be divided equally
among all organizations represented.
3. Present your Scorecard to the Rendez-vous de la Baie in Church Point before 5 pm Saturday and
draw 3 free chips if you have a selfie from the Cape St. Mary’s Lighthouse Park. Also receive a Free Lapel Pin.
4. The scorecard with the highest total chip value will win a $500 prepaid VISA card. In case of a tie,

CAV RIDE TO THE AFGHANISTAN MEMORIAL
The Darren Williams Ride to the Afghanistan Memorial
On Saturday morning, join the 2nd Canadian Army Veterans
for their Darren Williams Ride to the Afghanistan Memorial
in Hebron, just outside of Yarmouth.
A group of students formed the Memorial Club and
fund-raised the money necessary to build the monument.
The names of every Canadian lost in the mission in
Afghanistan are listed.
The ride was the brainchild of 2nd CAV members and
championed by member Darren Williams. In its inaugural
year in 2013, the run was the National Ride for the CAV. Darren was a great
supporter of the Wharf Rat Rally, raising money for our annual charity and
guiding tours. In the fall of 2013, Darren was invited to become a member of the
Wharf Rat Rally Motorcycle Association’s Board of Directors, which he happily
accepted. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, he was
transferred to Ontario with his military position.
In 2015, Darren was one of the victims of a collision while
on a group ride with other CAV members, and passed
away at the scene of the accident in Ontario. That year,
the Board of Directors re-named this ride in his honour.
The ride continues to
be a favourite of both
military and civilians
alike. Respect and
thanks are given to our
fallen, and admiration
to the students who recognized the importance of their sacrifices and erected
this tribute in their honour.

NOVA SCOTIA ARM WRESTLING
Halifax hosted the very first NSAWA Provincial
Championships welcoming competitors from
outside the Province of Nova Scotia and since
then, the NSAWA has travelled the province
holding competitions from Yarmouth and
Bridgewater to Glace Bay and Amherst, and
a lot of the small towns in between.
Each year, on the Saturday of the Rally,
we are pleased to welcome the annual NSAWA
tournament to the Centre Stage here in Digby.
Did you know that the Nova Scotia Arm
Wrestling Association was formed in 1985
and in its first year of competitions held
just a couple of tournaments as it sought
to establish itself with the Nova Scotia
Liquor License Board? Over time the
sport gained its following with established
tournaments, lots of competitors and fan
attendance and appreciation.
This event allows the NSAWA to hold another
Junior tournament and gives the amateurs another chance at moving into the
Elite competition. The cost for amateurs to participate is $10.00 per class and
it’s $5.00 per class for the Juniors. At the 2017 tournament they had about 40
entries and this year they think it will be even bigger.
This year has something special - a one on one challenge. That’s right – Shawn
Deveau of Meteghan has challenged our very own Phil Carty. Be sure to be on
hand to cheer on our local champion. You’ll see them Saturday, September 1st,
on the Centre Stage. Weigh In takes place at 12:00 pm with the actual event
starting at 1:00 pm. BE THERE! to support your favourite competitor.
