WHAT CHARACTERISES INTERNORM WINDOWS

Internorm studio windows made of timber/aluminium; uPVC/aluminium and uPVC combine modern flush

design with innovative technologies.

Excellent thermal insulation and optimum energy efficiency

All Internorm windows are best suited for low energy and passive houses and are partly available as passive

house certified components (according to Passivhausinstitut Dr. Feist/Darmstadt).

Internorm’s standard triple insulating glazing SOLAR+ offers the highest degree of thermal insulation and

energy efficiency. The overall energy transmission value (g value) is 20 % higher than with standard triple glazing.

Thus the solar energy gain also increases by 20 % – free of charge additional heating and a contribution

to climate protection.

Composite windows with quadruple protection

A special composite construction offers perfect quadruple protection: increased thermal and sound protection

as well as integrated sun and privacy protection which lie between the panes – a choice of blinds, Venetian

blinds or Duette ® . No structural provisions or additional fittings are necessary.

Best security

Internorm windows with fully concealed locking parts are fitted on both bottom corners with security locking

(standard security). For further security there are two additional versions in Wk1 and Wk2 (or Resistant Class

RC1 and RC2).

WHAT CHARACTERISES INTERNORM WINDOWS

Internorm home soft windows made of timber/aluminium, uPVC/aluminium and uPVC combines rounded

soft-line design with innovative technologies.

Excellent thermal insulation and optimum energy effi ciency

All Internorm windows are best suited for low energy and passive houses and are partly available as passive

house certifi ed components (according to Passivhausinstitut Dr. Feist/Darmstadt).

Internorm’s standard triple insulating glazing SOLAR+ offers the highest degree of thermal insulation and

energy effi ciency.

No structural provisions or additional fi ttings are necessary.

Best security

Internorm windows with fully concealed locking parts are fi tted on both bottom corners with security locking

(standard security). For further security there are two additional versions in Wk1 and Wk2 (or Resistant Class

RC1 and RC2).

Perfect combination

home soft windows can be combined using different materials – timber/aluminium with uPVC/aluminium.

Therefore, each room can be provided with the ideal window solution and the right materials.

TRENDSETTING SOLuTIONS FOR WINDOWS AND DOORS

Internorm is Europe’s largest window brand with over 19.3 million window units produced. Internorm is not

just the market leader, but the knowledge leader – due to its extensive experience since 1931.

As a pioneer in the fi eld, Internorm was the fi rst licensee to manufacture uPVC windows in Austria. The

foresight of the company, technological know-how and an excellent feel for design lead to continuous peak

performances.

As the only window brand in Europe with nine passive house certifi cates, Internorm represents the leading

expertise in energy effi cient windows and doors, and is the market leader in Europe for highly thermally insulating

window systems.

You can rely on our market leading product quality and specialist dealers of high competency, right from the

initial consultation, though to installation, and up to after sales service. With Internorm you acquire the highest

security, increase the quality of life and the value of your home.

Photovoltaic Blinds:

All Internorm composite window systems can be

fitted with a motor driven blind without an external

power source. The energy is gained directly at the

window via a photovoltaic module which is integrated

into the blind cover and therefore, provides

self-sufficient power for the electric motor. It is saved

in a battery and is available when required. Permanent

charging of the battery takes place already with

diffuse day light.

Advantages: No energy costs accrue, no extra

fitting and no chiselling work is necessary as no

electric cables are needed. Consequently, this sun

protection is ideal in refurbishments as there is often

no power supply available. The blind is ready to use

straight after the window has been installed and

can be retro-fitted to almost any Internorm composite

window. The control occurs via wireless – more

blinds can be controlled in combination.

Technology

Many window panes are only connected to the frame in very few

positions. Internorm uses FIX-O-ROuND technology as standard

for a continuous all round fixing.

The advantage of this technology lies in the continuous

connection of the window frame with the glass pane. This

improves stability, thermal insulation and soundproofing,

burglary protection and functioning of the window for its entire

lifespan. FIX-O-ROuND technology

REMODELLING

Swap windows to save energy sustainably

High energy prices, climate protection and the

introduction of energy performance certificates all

lead to the fact that an investment in sustainable

remodelling of your house will pay off quickly. Old

“energy dumps” can be easily replaced with modern,

highly thermally insulated Internorm window

systems, which will save heating costs.

Lower energy consumption from the start

As has been demonstrated in various studies, a

temperature rise of two degrees centigrade can be

accommodated without any major economic impact,

anything above that is critical. The situation is

serious, but not hopeless. Everyone agrees that the

major contributor for climate change is the worldwide

emission of CO 2 .

The most effective and also the most economical

way to reduce these emissions, is to find measures

to lower the energy consumption right from the

start. This was the verdict of a study on climate protection

carried out by the management consultancy

Mckinsey about: measures, such as applying nuclear

or wind power instead, reforestation or storage

of CO 2 , where CO 2 is reduced slowly, all generate

additional costs. Methods, however, which reduce

the initial energy consumption, such as using biofuel

or heating water with solar energy, generate profit.

For this reason, according to the Mckinsey study,

the best solution for economic climate protection

Thermal imaging provides information on thermal bridges of a house.

Image: Association of private building owners r.a. / Federal Association

of German Builders’ Merchants r.a.

Tips

clearly is: efficient thermal insulation. Every saved

tonne of CO 2 leaves a profit of approximately £ 125,–.

Saving tonnes of CO 2 is possible

This notion becomes even more interesting, if you

note where these CO 2 emissions originate from:

the well-known “sinners” industry and traffic each

account for approximately a third, but roughly 40 %

come from badly insulated buildings.

ENERGY WINDOW

Edition Window with 3LA Glazing

Report Number: Chilt/T07021-1

BFRC Certified Simulator 032, Mike Chorlton

As 25 to 30 % of the heat in a house escapes

through the windows alone; this results in an increased

need for heating and cooling. using modern

windows could already save tonnes of CO 2 every

year. If all windows in an average house with 20

windows aged 25 years would be replaced with new

passive house windows, every year almost two

tonnes of CO 2 could be saved. In case these old

windows are old single glazed windows, which are

even less insulated, the number would rise to almost

five tonnes.

Another example: if all the 60 million windows in

Austria were on passive house standard, the total

annual CO 2 output of Austria would be reduced

y over 5.7 million tonnes of CO 2 , which would be

over 6 %. To put it bluntly: if other measures, such

as improved insulation of walls and roofs, etc. were

included in the calculation, the kyoto target of

20 % CO 2 reduction could be achieved with energy

conservation on buildings alone.

This is why Internorm specifically supports passive

house windows: Internorm is the only window

manufacturer in Europe with nine passive house

certificates from the Passivhausinstitut Darmstadt,

Dr. Feist. In the market segment of highly thermally

insulating windows, Internorm clearly is the market

leader in Austria and Europe. This development also

underlines the fact that efficient thermal insulation

has as much economic potential as it has potential

in climate protection: 50 % of all Internorm windows

that are sold today, are especially suitable for low

energy and passive houses.

WIN/WIN Situaton

Well remodelled houses and passive houses unburden

the environment, energy and costs are conserved

sustainably. Sophisticated windows save a lot of

money, time and fuss – and they raise living quality

for years to come.

Apart from increased demands on thermal protection

and an impermeable building shell, not only do

thermal characteristics have to be improved, the

elementary rules of structural physics must also

be considered when fitting windows. In addition to

that, remodelling the facade will improve the energy

balance considerably.

More energy efficiency using highly thermally

insulating INTERNORM window systems

Window solutions are an investment with a lasting

value. For this reason, any quality conscious person

carrying out remodelling works should make use of

the security of a brand name. For only brand name

windows will keep their promises in the long run:

exactly fitting and individual windows and energy

conservation solutions – highly thermally insulating,

economic and environment friendly.

Passive house certified and certified Internorm

window systems with triple glazing not only considerably

reduce the annual CO 2 output, they are also

82 I 83

extremely economic. Internorm, with all of its lowest

energy and passive house window systems, is the

first place to contact, when you want to stop “heating

the outside through your windows”. Additionally,

the special triple white glass with solar coating will

provide a gain in solar energy.

Thermal remodelling – just professional

Your demand when remodelling: less heating

costs – more energy efficiency and sustainability –

simply better living quality!

Internorm will be happy to fulfil your demands and

you will save doubly: on the one side heating

costs – by improved window insulations and on the

other side due to the correct and therefore impermeable

construction connection. For only combining

the best windows with the services offered

by the highly qualified Internorm partners will provide

you with the following advantages: extremely

long lifespan, high weather resistance and reliable

functionality, long term living quality and warranties

lasting for many years.

Possible overall temperature losses in a badly insulated house

Thermal Insulation

As a building can lose approx. 25 to 30 % of its energy

through the windows, the thermal insulation of the windows

is especially important. Energy transfer through

the windows is not only heat loss – due to the transparency

of the glass, an energy gain is also achieved.

If correctly planned with well laid out window surfaces

(i.e. large window surfaces towards the south), the

energy balance of the building can be influenced considerably.

A window‘s thermal insulation depends on the frame

material, the insulating glass and the impermeability of

the window. The parameter for the insulating capability

of the window is the u value. The lower the value,

the better the thermal insulation. Additional features

like roller shutters and window shutters improve the u

value.

Winterly thermal protection

The aim is to reduce the energy loss through the transparent

building components – windows and facades

– during the heating period to an economically feasible

amount and in due course to reduce emission of CO 2

through heating.

The parameter of the heat transmission coefficient

UW is stated in W/m 2 K (Watt per square metre kelvin),

which is either mathematically calculated according to

EN ISO 10077 or metrologically established according

to EN ISO 12567. The following factors influence the

heat transmission coefficient uW:

Heat transmission through the glazing ug

Heat transmission through the frame uf

Linear heat loss coefficient of composite glass

edge y

Summerly heat protection

This mainly serves to ensure the thermal comfort in a

room during the warm season. Overheating due to solar

irradiation through the windows into a room should

be preferably avoided using constructive measures.

Guidelines concerning upper limits in temperatures are

stated in national standards (e.g. ÖNORM B 8110/3):

upper limits in temperature t*, day time ≤ + 27°C

upper limits in temperature t*, night time ≤ + 25°C

Sound insulation

Interference of noise is unpleasant and can – given

the right intensity and duration – affect the human

body negatively. Noise is perceived through changes

of air pressure, which are received through the hu-

Tips

man ear and passed on to the brain. Sound insulation

(soundproofing) of a window is measured in decibel.

The higher the value, the better the sound insulation.

Sound insulation states how much sound energy from

the original sound energy is allowed to pass through.

At an insulation of 10 dB 1/10 of the original sound energy

passes through, at 20 dB 1/100, at 30 dB 1/1000

etc. Humans perceive a reduction of 10 dB as halving

the noise. Soundproofing of a window is dependent on

frame material, insulating glass, impermeability of the

window and the construction connection.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

SAVING

The house or flat is considered a human‘s third skin.

We spend over 90 % of our lives in closed rooms. A

healthy living climate and thermal comfort are important

for us to feel good.

Windows are an important “feel good factor”, they

influence the living climate and energy balance considerably.

Ideal thermal protection and perfect living

climate through triple glazing

Warm surfaces are pleasant and cosy. This is where

the positive effect of triple glazed Internorm window

systems is applied: The surface temperature of the

frame and the glass pane is closer to the inside air

temperature due to the good thermal insulation. Thus

cold and draughts are avoided and a nice and warm

cosy spot is created even near the window.

Energy conservation – also with large scale

window solutions

No need to do without generous window constructions.

The highly thermally insulating properties of triple

glazed Internorm window systems allow you to use

40 % larger glass surfaces in comparison with double

glazing at the same heating costs.

Solar energy gain

The new energy efficient standard glass SOLAR+ not

only achieves extremely high thermal insulation, it also

gains more solar energy. Especially in the cold season

the high overall energy transmission factor uses low

solar radiation to its optimum and keeps the gained

heat in the building.

PASSIVE HOuSE WINDOWS

The window in a passive house plays a prominent role

in two ways – firstly, the heat loss despite large glass

surfaces can be reduced and secondly, windows

increase the possibilities for heat gain through solar

irradiation.

Internorm‘s highly thermally insulating energy saving

windows fulfil this seemingly contradictory dual capacity

exemplary: Triple heat protection glazing achieves

U g values of up to 0.5 W/m 2 K and g values (overall

energy transmission factors) of up to 62 % – depending

on coating and gas fillings.

In comparison u g values of conventional windows often

lie at around 1.4 W/m 2 k. using these window systems

in the uk in south-facing houses with little shade the

heat gain even between December and February is

greater than the heat loss.

Besides the glazing however you have to consider

the insulation of the window frame as well as thermal

bridges at the glass edge and in the connecting area

window to wall. Otherwise any positive heat gain would

be cancelled out immediately.

Spacers form thermal bridges, they are usually made

of aluminium. Especially for use in passive houses particularly

well thermally insulating window frames were

developed, which also reduce the glass edge losses

through deeper offsets into the frame.

INTERNORM EXPERT ADVICE

Passive House

Stainless steel spacers further reduce losses at the

glass edge. For passive house certified components

thermally optimised systems – like the Internorm ISO

spacers – are used. Following the automobile industry

all glass panes are glued to improve structural stability.

Essential Principles For Construction Of

Passive House Windows:

Thermally optimised composite edge

Expert installation, thermally optimised

Internorm‘s multi-patented system technology has achieved to transfer the heat composite system of

structural components/insulation/optical weather-resistant outer design, which has proven successful for

decades, to windows. The unique advantages of thermal foam and aluminium can be used at their best:

FkW-free thermal foam for highly thermally environment-friendly insulation and aluminium for unlimited,

weather-resistant designer possibilities.

Internorm is the only window manufacturer in Europe with nine passive house certified components and

also became the European market leader in the low energy and passive house segment with this highly

thermally insulating product range. When the overall concept of a passive house has been perfectly planned,

it is also possible to use highly thermally insulating, but not passive house certified components,

to build lowest energy and passive houses.

PASSIVE HOuSE

SuSTAINABLE INVESTMENT

A passive house provides consistent, comfortable

temperatures in winter, as well as in summer without

using conventional heating or air conditioning systems.

using the existing temperature provided through solar

irradiation through the windows as well as the heat

from appliances and inhabitants is sufficient, the necessary

heating energy for a passive house is only

10 % of that needed for a conventional house.

Heating Heizwärmebedarf cost demand und and CO CO2 2-Emissionen emissions per pro year Jahr

tonnes CO2 / year

old building low energy house passive house

Optimised energy demand

This results in an annual heating demand of not

more than 15 kWh/m 2 a. The overall energy demand

including warm water and household electricity for a

passive house is less than 120 kWh/m 2 a. The heating

load of a passive house is not more than 10 W/

m 2 , for a room of 30 m 2 , this results in a heating load

of approximately 300 Watts – just to illustrate: the

heating power of a tea candle is 30 Watts already. This

means that 10 tea candles are enough to heat 30

m 2 in a passive house. These extraordinary savings

are rooted in the two basic principles of minimising

thermal loss and optimising thermal gain.

INTERNORM EXPERT ADVICE

tonnes CO 2 / year

Raising comfort

Due to the powerful insulation the heat stays inside

the building, all surrounding surfaces are equally warm.

For this reason there is no radiation asymmetry (heat

radiation) originating from exterior walls in a passive

house, and also the resulting draught phenomena are

avoided. The reverse conclusion would be that heat

stays outside in the summer to avoid overheating. This

means that in a passive house a consistent living

climate is retained throughout the whole year – this

provides a high degree of comfort for the inhabitants.

Passive houses also make use of highly efficient air

conditioning systems to prevent mould growth, dust

and any resulting allergies.

Consistent pleasant

living climate

in summer and

winter.

Reducing Costs and protecting the environment

As the energy demands of a passive house are

reduced by up to 90 %, heating costs and therefore

CO 2 emissions can be reduced drastically – compared

to a conventionally constructed building, on average

4.000 kg of greenhouse relevant carbon monoxide are

avoided each year.

This would correspond to driving about 27.000 km

with a typical 6 litre car. Therefore constructing energy

efficient passive houses supports climate protection

sustainably and saves on limited resources, such as

oil or gas.

The extraordinary thermal insulation clearly is the focal point in passive house construction. The enormous

energy savings of up to 90 % not only please the inhabitants, but also represent an active and

essential contribution to climate protection, due to the reduced CO 2 emission. Nevertheless, a highly

insulating window should still be able to fulfil all the basic functions of a modern window construction: It

is important to be able to offer all window sizes and opening types, but also bespoke special constructions,

such as round or angular elements. Further functions, such as burglary protection, shading, insect

protection and visual design possibilities should not be treated as unimportant for highly thermally insulating

window systems.

86 I 87

WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR PASSIVE HOuSES

One of the major characteristics is the active utilisation of existing energy – minimising thermal losses and at the

same time optimising thermal gain, these are the basic principles. But merely combining passive house certified

components is not enough to reach a passive house construction standard: The whole thing is more than the sum

of its parts – mutual interactions between the distinct components necessitate integral planning to fulfil three

basic demands:

Heating demand < 15 kWh/(m 2 a)

Primary energy demand (heating, warm water, house appliances) < 120 kWh/(m 2 a)

Pressure difference air exchange n50 < 0.6 h -1 , i.e. at a pressure difference of 50 Pascal the air flow must be

less than 60 % the building’s volume per hour.

Passive House

The passive house needs an impermeable

outside shell and optimised

thermal insulation with integrated

ventilation in both directions:

Fresh air is sucked into the building

underground through the ventilation

pipe, pre-heated by the earth, and

led to the heat recovery system.

There the energy of the used air is

passed on to the fresh, filtered, cold

air using a heat exchanger. Here

the energy stored in used air, which

would normally be lost in traditional

airing, is utilised.

From there, air is led into the living

areas and distributed with special

nozzles in order to avoid draughts.

The air is sucked out of sanitary areas

and the kitchen, in order to avoid

the spread of unpleasant smells

throughout the house.

A human needs 15 to 20 m 3 of air per hour. In order to achieve better air quality in passive houses, in the

colder months energy consuming airing can be avoided. This is why the passive house is different from

conventional buildings.

This technology necessitates careful planning and exact construction, but it results in a higher living

standard and supports CO 2 savings considerably. For the sake of our environment, but also for the sake

of our own well-being, we should construct more and more houses in passive house technology!
