LIS Einschulung 2012
Dear Parents and Students
As we begin the 2012-2013 school year, I
extend a warm welcome to you and your
families. I also hope you had time to relax and
time to enjoy your summer vacation. Hopefully,
your child is excited about coming to school.
We sincerely believe that parents should be
active participants in their child’s school
programme, so we invite you to get involved in
school and classroom activities, and the many
exciting LIS events and projects that take place
throughout the school year.
Our goal at LIS is to provide each student with
learning experiences that will develop
academic, social, physical and emotional
success. We believe that each child is an
individual with excellent potential to grow in all
areas. It is important that the students know
that they are valued and respected in this
educational journey.
Friends and family were invited to attend ”Einschulung“ Day
Traditionally, the Einschulung is held on campus
the day before the first day of school. This year
it was a great way to meet new people.
Everyone gathered in the gym. With parents,
grandparents and friends present, our First
Graders heard stories about learning about
yourself. Our Headmaster, Roel Scheepens gave
a little welcome; the new
Primary Principal
Mrs Sarah Brannon
did as well.
Establishing a relationship with parents is of
particular importance. This togetherness, or
home school partnership, is a natural occurrence.
In its simplest form it reveals that we need each
other as we share the role of shaping the future.
Together, we are stronger than we could ever be
on our own. It is this partnership that every child
deserves and craves. We have the greatest
responsibility of all; caring for children. We are
proud to be in this partnership with you and we
invite you to be a fully-fledged member of the
LIS Community. We invite you to be a major
contributor in what promises to be a special
year for your sons and daughters. So welcome
to the 2012-2013 school year and welcome to
LIS!
From the Headmaster
On Monday 20 August it seemed, for a moment,
that the excessive temperatures of August 2011
would be repeated. We had 36 degrees in some
of the classrooms where teachers were
preparing for their first lessons. Fortunately for
all, by the time the students arrived on
Wednesday the temperatures had started to
come down and we have had very few problems
with the temperature since.
LIS has had a good start to 2012-13! On the
first day of school there were some problems
with a few class lists, which naturally lead to
some confusion.
The new Modern Languages Building, with 5
new interactive whiteboards, has been
integrated into the campus and is providing
much appreciated additional room for staff and
students.
By covering the ceiling with acoustic absorbers
this summer the noise levels in the cafeteria
have been reduced spectacularly. Where
students used to have to bend over the table to
even be able to understand what their
classmates were saying, they can now have a
relaxed conversation. This is going to make a
huge contribution to the general feeling of
well-being in there, for students as well as for
the supervising staff.
Student Support Services has seen some minor
but welcome improvements such as the addition
of a new office for the Primary / Early
Childhood counsellor and the creation of a new
testing space.
The Secondary Computer lab received an
overhaul and was fitted with a whole new set of
computers and there are now extra sets of
netbooks for classroom use, as well.
As of today, 4 September, students have signed
up for after school activities and these are just
in their start-up week. ESL lessons in Primary
Mr Scheepens, had a very special message of
encouragement for the children through the story
“The Little Engine That Could”. Like the little train
engine, children were reminded, not only of the
“climb” each one will need to make in facing the
challenges that lie ahead, but also of the
potential each one has in achieving their goals.
With the words, “I think I can, I think I can, I think
I can!” everything is possible in Grade One!
The ceremony was highlighted by an official
welcome into Grade One as each child’s name
was individually called. With the traditional
“Zuckertüte” in hand, each student successfully
have started, after an initial intense period of
testing. Secondary students are handing in
their first homework assignments. In other
words, we have lift-off for 2012-13!
A few late arrivals have joined us and we are
now at 750 students, 136 of whom are new to
the school. Some statistics:
• 54 % of all students are German, 46 %
either has mixed nationality or some other
nationality
• Most frequent other nationalities are USA,
UK, Russia, India, Vietnam, Netherlands,
France and Japan.
We are working hard to develop our online
systems to keep up with the growth of the
school. The application process has been
transferred from paper to online and now we
are making you, the parents, responsible for
editing your own contact details online.
Information about this has been sent out. You
made the “climb up the hill” and was warmly
received by their new classroom teacher and into
Grade One.
Ms Jozeka Panepinto (Class 1JP), Ms Bryony
Galligan (Class 1BG) and Ms Deborah Fischer
(Class 1DF) are all happy teachers of our Grade
One students this year. Each class then spent
time with their new teacher in their beautifully
decorated classroom where they learned about
the adventures that are in store for them this
year. Parents were treated to refreshments and, to
finalize the day, everyone gathered for the
traditional balloon release. LIS would like to
wholeheartedly thank Ms Annie Hedenig for the
enrolment
still say no to individual trips and you’ll still
have to give separate permission for anything
involving an extra cost.
In a follow-up to last February’s lock down
event, LIS received a letter on 23 August 2012
to say that the investigation has now been
officially closed, without ever having found out
who or what set off the alarm. During
September and October we will be carrying out
a number of Fire Drills and Lock Down Drills,
some at 15:00 in the afternoon when parents
are in the building – this creates more
difficulties and that is precisely why we need to
practice at those times, as well. Thank you in
advance for your understanding!
Miss Schilling and her students for the beautiful
music that accompanied the ceremony. We also
thank Ms Caroline Kircher and Ms Asnath
Letter from the Board
Welcome back to the new school year.
Once again, we have grown in numbers,
both of students and of faculty members.
And that in spite of having to turn away
nearly 70 applicants because in many
grades the school is now more than the
full. On the one hand, this is a nice
problem to have, but on the other hand it
is disappointing that we are not able to
offer a quality education to every child
whose parents would value it.
Allow us at the beginning of the school year, when
we are welcoming a large number of new teachers,
students and parents, to introduce ourselves. At the
recent annual general meeting, the members reelected
the four members of the Board for a further
three year term. We are: Dr Skadi Beblo, a
paediatrician working at the university hospital who
has children at the school and has previously been a
parent representative; Jana Näther, an employee of
the Handelshochschule who specializes in
management education and has been a member of
the board since 2008; Dr Nikolaus Petersen, a
lawyer who has been a member of the Board since
2001 and in the meantime has a child at the
school; and Christopher Smith, who has been a
member of the Board for 18 years and has three
children at the school. We work as a close-knit team
and have regular weekly contact with the
headmaster and the commercial director. We do
not interfere with the educational management of
Welcome to a new school year at LIS
We, the elected parents’ representatives, are the
parents’ voice during meetings with the school
administration and the school board of governors.
As such it is essential that we know your concerns,
questions, ideas and feedback when we meet, in
order to better represent the whole LIS parents
community. To reach us you can either use the
following email address
or relay your request
via one of the section
parent representatives
with whom we meet on
a regular basis.
We also support the
idea that LIS is a
welcoming community
grounded in the core
Alya Pender
the school, because we are not the experts, but we
do serve as a sounding board for school leadership.
Our principal tasks are to ensure that progress is
being made towards achieving the agreed upon
strategic goals, and to provide the legal and
financial framework necessary to facilitate the
development of a strong and stable institution. In
addition, we bring a management expertise to the
table which we hope is particularly valuable in the
areas of personnel and risk management.
We make considerable efforts to communicate to
parents and staff what the Board is doing from time
to time. We hold open forum meetings both with
parents and with staff during the year, giving
anybody who is interested the opportunity to ask
questions and get answers. We invite the parent
representatives and the staff representatives to
attend the beginning of each Board meeting in
order to report on any particular issues which they
would like to bring to our attention and to request
belief that a child's development benefits
immensely from parents and school working
together. There will be some opportunities during
the school year to attend social and charity
events, and numerous other activities with the
classes or at school, and we hope you will see
them as a great way to befriend other parents,
share ideas, experiences, information and
information. In addition to this formal
communication channel, the Board is of course
accessible and approachable at any time, but only
in respect of issues which concern it and which
cannot be dealt with at a more routine level. The
school is run by the headmaster. The board is
responsible for running the association which is
responsible for running the school. A fine dividing
line, but a very important one.
The Board thanks the members of the association,
which include the four elected parent
representatives, for the trust which has been placed
in them. We will continue to make best efforts to
continuously improve the quality of your school at
the same time as ensuring that it remains on a firm
and stable footing.
Enjoy the year.
concerns. With as little as a couple of hours per
year, participating in some activities and events
does not necessarily require much of your time, it
is a nice way to support the whole community and
make your children feel important, sending the
message that you value the school.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
First Impressions
The start of the academic year is
always an exciting time for the
members of the Primary School
and this year was no exception.
As 56 new students and 8 new
staff members joined the
returning teacher, a new
school nurse and myself, the
new Primary Principal, there
were a number of new faces
that everybody should be happy at the same
this event, nonetheless.
Saturday, 16 June 2012 started early for the many
chance to make a first impression.” A first impression
is what your instinct tells you about a person or place.
My first impression of LIS has been that it is such a
welcoming and friendly place. I have seen students
keen to greet and help their peers, I have seen staff
members willing to work alongside colleagues to
share good practice. I have seen parents taking time
to support others and helping them to find their way
around.
I have also found LIS a happy place to be. It is lovely
to see our international mix of students smiling and
laughing with one another, enjoying each other’s
company. One of the school core objectives states
that “We help our students to be happy, wellbalanced,
ethical individuals who work effectively and
the games also won a medal to keep. Kids explored
another highlight too – the Olympic Eye, a lifting
ramp where up to 3 children could get in and
enjoy a view in 10 m high from a bird´s eye view.
On the culinary side we all enjoyed homemade
cakes and pastries, fantastic food at the
international food court which were prepared by
many of our LIS parents as well as tasty poultry
sausages on a BBQ grill sponsored by Gutfried and
Getränkevertrieb Noack.
And let’s not forget all the other activities that
were well appreciated by everyone around: the
many games, the Chinese arts & crafts area, the
roots and shoots club, the stage show with
fantastic musical performances, dances and
taekwondo demonstrations by our students.
The second hand book sale organised by gr. 12
student Franz Pappelbaum and his brother
Ludwig was also quite successfull. All proceeds (a
total of 73,50 Euro) were donated to the Red
Cross (DRK).
Our appreciation goes to all our sponsors,
parents, volunteers and supporters. Let´s not
forget the students of grade 11 – this Summer
Fair wouldn´t be possible without their support.
Special thanks to the food and games committee
members, our janitors Peter and Sven, as well as
the business office ladies, Rita and Stephanie,
willingly with others.” It is good to see that this is
actually happening in practise.
Clearly a school’s focus needs to be on learning and
over the course of the year there will be developments
in the curriculum as the staff focus on improving the
quality of the learning offered to the students. I am
confident that LIS provides a good environment for
learning because it has created a safe and enjoyable
place to be so that the developments which will be
agreed will be easy enough to implement.
I shall look forward to getting know better all the
people who have made my first impressions so
positive.
Student Support Services
Student Support Services is a department of the school, which offers support to students in Early
Childhood, Primary and Secondary, and works closely with parents and staff.
We understand that children and young people
are individuals, with different strengths and
needs. Consequently, we develop and
implement systems, whose aim is to ensure that
all students receive the care they need and fulfil
their potential.
The services we offer are: counselling support;
learning support; medical support and child
welfare/protection.
Counselling Support
School counselling provides short-term
services aimed at maximising the education
and socialisation of each child within the
school community. Services utilise a
comprehensive developmental guidance and
counselling programme. Included are
classroom guidance lessons, small group
counselling, individual counselling, individual
student planning, and consultation with
classroom teachers. Contact:
New Playground Buddies
The LIS Playground Buddies were so amazing
and successful last school year that it is
essential to continue this Primary programme:
The “Buddies” supported their peers and
younger children on the Early Childhood and
Primary School playground, together with the
Playground Buddy Coordinator, during recess
by teaching and sharing with them games,
organizing teams, playing with children who
are lonely, and helping new students to settle
in. Starting at the end of September, some 4th
and 5th Grade students will become new
Playground Buddies of the school year
2012/2013. The children who applied for a
job as Playground Buddy, were nominated by
their fellow students and interviewed by staff.
In order to set up this support, it is necessary
that the “Buddies” are provided with trainings
so that they develop the needed knowledge,
skills and confidence in order to carry out
their job well. At the beginning of September,
21 “Buddies” will spent a whole weekend at
Gut Wehlitz in Schkeuditz to get trained by
KrisTina Stellmach, Romy Döring (both
Student Support Services), Sandra Markow and
Davide Sozzi (all Hort staff). Part of the training
will be learning to read the emotions of others,
how to be a good listener and how to approach
students who are sad or bored. They will also
learn many new and exciting playground
games. Through their invaluable support, the
“Buddies” will encourage children to play safely
Working closely with families is not only crucial for
the effective support of our students: It is also a
fundamental principle of Student Support Services.
We, therefore, wish to express our heartfelt thanks to
you, the LIS parents, for your invaluable support and
encourage you to contact us, should you have any
questions or concerns. We would also like to take this
opportunity to wish all LIS families and staff a
healthy, happy and successful school year.
Fiona Eels,
SSS Coordinator, on behalf of Student Support Services
together which in itself will help reduce the
number of accidents on the playground and
thereby create happier playtimes.
We are all very excited and can’t wait to see
children playing with the new Playground Buddies.
LIS OBSERVER LIS OBSERVER
The Supporters Association of LIS
The Förderverein für die Leipzig International
School – The Supporters Association of LIS – is
a charitable, non-profit organization founded in
1994. There are 4 members of the honorary
board: Birgit Thal-hammer, Nicola Rossius, Udo
Rummelt, and Heinrich Röhrs.
When the Förderverein was founded, LIS had
existed for two years only, had 22 students,
hardly any money and was one of the best kept
secrets in Leipzig. So the Förderverein initiated
the LIS fundraising dinners - which was killing
two birds with one stone. This event made many
people aware of LIS and at that time it
raised money for the school.
The Förderverein was also creative in many
other ways: in order to raise money for the
renovation of our school building the “New
Building fund” was set up. The Förderverein
had the idea that the ceramic tiles which
cover the multipurpose-hall could be sold
and engraved with the name of the donor.
Many Parents and other supporters
contributed to the “New Building fund” in
this way. These tiles – by the way - are still on
sale. Also we happen to have left some of the
historical lamps from this school building
(before the renovation) which can still be
bought.
The Geckos with new chefs
10 LIS OBSERVER www .intschool-leipzig.com
With your generous help and
the help of other friends and
supporters – The Förderverein
has managed to achieve wonderful facilities
and projects: such as the beautiful new
schoolyard, the library and the brand new
outdoor classroom.
Other recent projects are: the “school trip
fund” of 15.000 Euro per year, which
enables all our students to take part in
school trips, new uniforms for our school
sports teams, indoor equipment for
preschool.
If you have been to the cafeteria recently you
might have noticed that it was quite silent in
there, that is due to the new noise protection.
At the moment we are trying to to support the
music department by getting is a new piano for
A joint committee of parents and LIS-employees made the
decision to change our caterer for the 2012 – 2013 school year.
Meal service will be provided by the HW Dienstleistungsgruppe,
a company which has previously provided LIS school lunches.
If you would like to have the possibility of eating school lunch,
you will need to fill out the contract to be downloaded from the
Mother Tongue Corner in
the LIS Observer
As you may recall, for the past few months
we have been talking about looking for ways
to offer our students the opportunity to use
their mother tongue at school. A good way
to achieve this is by publishing at least one
article in a mother tongue – so we are in the
process of creating a mother tongue corner
in the LIS Observer.
In order to do this, we would like to ask the
parents to help us by submitting articles in
your native tongue (other than English). We
aim for one article each issue and thank you
in advance for your support.
Welcome to Hort
We are very pleased to welcome all of you who will
attend Hort in school year 2012/2013. We are
looking forward to seeing you on the playground
and in two additional rooms on the ground floor of
the Hort building: The 5th graders have the
opportunity to chill out in the 5th Grade Lounge
and students, who would like to spend their
afternoon in quiet atmosphere, are invited to play
chess or read a book in the Quiet Room on the
ground floor.
The Homework Club will take place four times a
week in the same room. The former Quiet Room on
the second floor is going to be used as Hort
Activity Room: Here you can participate in Mr
Primary Summer Holiday Hort 2012
What is green, water-rich, smells like an animal, dressed up as a princess and tastes like chocolate?
This year’s Primary Summer
Holiday Hort was dedicated to
five great subjects: Each week
had its own name and was
packed with topic related
activities and fieldtrips.
In the first week, called Animal Week, we went
to to the Wildpark and came really close to to deer
and racoons. A pottery pottery and needle felting
workshop in the Hort kitchen gave us the
opportunity to get familiar with different kinds
of materials such as clay or sheep wool to create
beautiful and unique animals. If you would like
to know what kind of animals you could print
with hands and feet, please feel free to take a
look at the artworks on the second floor of the
Hort building. In the Water Week we explored
the Lake Cospuden by boat and then a trip to
the Stadtgarten Connewitz made us realize the
importance of water for humans and nature.
That’s why we didn’t get upset about water from
above because Leipzig also offers stunning
indoor swimming pools, for example the
Grünauer Welle which we visited twice during
the summer due to rainy or cold weather. The
Green Week brought us to the Zaubergarten
where we made our own herbarium (plant
press), which preserves the form and colour of
collected plants by drying and pressing them
between two wooden disks. We also wanted to
feel the spirit of the Olympic Games that’s why
we went to the Clara Zetkin Park to enjoy
different relay games such as an egg race race,
sack race or tug-of-war. Our great performance
of “The Sleeping Beauty” was the highlight
Chris’ Legends Club or Ms Kiki’s Puzzle Club.
Furthermore, diverse workshops such as Needle
Felting and Detective Stories are going to be
offered throughout the year in the new Activity
Room. Our multifunctional activity space, called
Hort kitchen, will be used for Arts and Crafts with
Ms Sandra, Ms KrisTina and Ms Kiki as well as for
the Cooking Club with Ms Romy for signed up
If you would like to learn how to juggle, please feel
free to get in touch with Mr Davide and join his
Clowning Club. For students, who are garden and
nature lovers, LIS Hort provides two great outside
activities: Mr Goodwin’s Explorers Club for 1st and
of the Theatre Week.
We not only invited
Reception and Pre-
School children, also
many parents came to
the auditorium to see
us on stage after practicing 4 days at a time.
The last week was very delicious and sweet: The
Halloren chocolate factory is the oldest
producing chocolate factory in Germany and we
had to confess that we all would like to work
there because of the daily “quality controls”. The
next day we finally had the chance to make our
2nd graders and the School Garden as a
collaboration between Ms KrisTina (Hort), Frau
Werndl and Frau Thörmer (both Primary). In addition,
sporty children can play Football in the Gym with Mr
Alen. More activities offered by Hort staff are going
to be announced soon. Enjoy your time in Hort!
Garage. The crowning finish of the Gourmet
Week and our summer holiday time was a big
party for all Holiday children with different play
areas on the playground, such as water guns,
face painting and sweets memory. No matter
what the weather was like,
we all enjoyed our animal,
green, water-rich, fairy talelike
and tasty Summer
Counsellor Corner
The School Counselling department has two new
members this year! Susanne van Wersch, coming
from the Early Childhood programme, will be the
school counsellor for Early Childhood through
Grade 2. Craig Goodwin, who completed his
practicum with LIS last year, is in his full
internship with the programme this year. He is
in the final year of his master’s degree and is
working in the capacity of a full time school
counsellor under the supervision of Susan
McCullough. Craig is focusing on Grades 3-5 and
11-12. Susan is teaching PSHE to Grades 6 & 7
as well as providing counselling services to
Grades 6-10.
School counsellors work to ensure the academic
and social success of all students by working with
teachers, administrators and, of course, directly
with students. We are continuing to build our
program and will be networking with counsellors
from other international schools across Germany.
If you wish to contact us, please feel free to email
us or phone here at school. Susanne’s extension is
Trip to Bautzen
On Friday 22 June, last year's Grade 11 IB
History (higher level) students travelled to
former Stasi prison, known as Bautzen II, as a
part of their IB History topic “The Maintenance
of Power in Single Party States”. They were
shown around the prison in
tour through the cells of
former inmates such as
Harmut Richter.
“Although from the
outside Bautzen gave the
impression of an early century
townhouse, the inside
maintained the stereotypical
dreary appearance of a Stasi
prison.”
Back-to-School Tips: Connecting with Your Child’s
School Counselor for a Successful School Year
Understand the expertise and responsibilities of
your child’s school counselor. School counselors
make a measurable impact in every student’s life,
assisting with academic, career and personal/
social development. Professional school
counselors are trained in both educating and
counseling, allowing them to function as a
facilitator between parents, teachers and the
student in matters concerning the student’s goals,
abilities and any areas needing improvement.
School counselors provide services not only to
students in need, but to all students.
Meet or contact your child’s school counselor at
least three times per school year. The beginning
of a school year is an excellent opportunity to
initiate contact with your child’s school
counselor and doing so can ensure your child’s
positive school experience. Find out who the
counselor is and what his or her experience and
background are. By communicating with one
another at the beginning, middle, and end of
the school year, parents and counselors can
have a definite impact on a child’s success.
Discuss your child’s challenges and concerns with
the school counselor. As a parent, you know your
“The Story of
Hartmurt Richter
who escaped the SED
prison was very
impressive”
Moritz Stepp
“It is shocking
that such a horrible
place existed right in
front of the people's
doorsteps”
“The trip to
Bautzen was an
enjoyable trip for a History
Higher level student as it showed
me some historical signifi cance of
what is now known as Germanys
most famous prison during the
time of the DDR”
Vinh Nguyen
“Bautzen as a
town was and
continues to be greatly
infl uenced by the former
Stasi Prison located in the
center of the town”
Georg Schuecking
child best. However, the school counselor can help
you better understand your child as a student. It’s
important to encourage your child’s expression of
needs, hopes and frustrations. School counselors
are trained to help your children.
Learn about your child’s school and social
connections from the school counselor. When you
need information or assistance, your child’s school
counselor can help you get in touch with the
appropriate school officials; learn about school
policies on behavior, attendance, and dress; know
the school calendar of important dates and stay
connected with the school in many other ways.
The school counselor can also help you locate
resources in the community when you need them.
Work with the school counselor to identify
resources and find solutions to problems. If your
child is having a problem at school, it is important
to work with your child’s school counselor to find
solutions. Discuss resources available within and
outside of the school, and get information on how
such programs can benefit your child. Your school
counselor can be a valuable partner in your child’s
education and preparation for life beyond school.
Making Change Possible
This is an organisation that we met at the
Association of German International Schools
(AGIS) conference in February. It is led by a team
from the International School of Heidelberg who
organise CAS fairs at schools in Germany and
overseas trips for students, teachers and parents
to Namibia to promote working together. We will
be hosting a Make Change Possible Fair on Sept
28th for our G6-8 students as well as a CAS
Modern Language Centre opens with 5 additional teaching spaces
for the Secondary School
Over three days in the summer holiday the
Modern Languages Centre was built in the corner
of the playground closest to the main school
building. As building projects go it was fast, the
building is made of prefabricated
containers that were delivered and
pieced together to
create a wonderful
illusion on the
inside of a regular
session for our G11 IB classes.
The MCP Fair will be preceded by some
awareness raising and fund raising for the
organization; students will be asked for a
contribution in return for participating in the
activities on offer during the fair. The activities
will be led by our G11 students in partnership
with students from Heidelberg. They will consist
of games and challenges based on the lives and
building. The classrooms are big enough for the
teaching that happens inside and they are fitted
with interactive whiteboards and everything that
you would find in our other classrooms
except for the sink.
Danielle Lebel and
the Modern
Languages team
moved into
their new
Friday 31 August saw what has to be called 'the
educational trip of the year' to the
once-every-five-year dOCUMENTA(13) exhibition
in Kassel.
The G12 class and the G11 Art students were
joined by their ToK and Art teachers for the visit
which allowed them to see, hear and experience
some of the work on show in Kassel for 100
days by 200 leading artists from around the
world.
We were led through video walks at the station,
soundscapes in the park, 50 long 3D collages
(photo) and many more challenging and
sometimes difficult art pieces. Some works
shocked us with their political consequence;
some shook our senses or deprived us of one in
order to change our experience of the moment.
The city itself was on display as the art became
embroidered into the fabric of the town and
required us to move through its streets and
hidden hallways to take part. We are we are
very grateful to Claudia Balsters for making it
happen so early in the year. If you have the
chance then go and visit; if not this year, then
2017 will be here soon enough!
2012 – A Hungry Lion
has been born
The Lion is known as one of the most fearsome creatures on this planet.
Famed for its power and strength, ‘King of Beasts’ is a worthy title.
With the lion being the symbol of the city of Leipzig, and
it also featuring on the school crest, it is only fitting that
LIS adopt it as their emblem.
So, this year the sports teams at Leipzig International School
are now to be known as the ‘LIS Lions’.
Similar to the Lions patrolling the Serengeti, the LIS Lions
are hungry. A determination to be the most powerful, the fastest, the strongest
and the most intelligent will thrust LIS sports teams to the top of the pile of
German schools competing in G.I.S.S.T tournaments. Devouring prey such as
Berlin Brandenburg International School, Dresden International School and
Hannover International Schools is just the beginning – the LIS Lions have one goal
in mind. To be the king of their particular jungle, which is this case is to compete
with the biggest schools in Europe.
Playing sports at school is without doubt one of the most essential aspects of a student’s education.
Developing social skills, being taught resilience, sportsmanship and fair play will all play a major
part in shaping a young person’s character. Enjoying a sport will also encourage lifelong
participation in exercise – a must if we are to live a long healthy life.
LIS Lions boasts a coaching staff that is second
to none. National and international coaches
train the students on a weekly basis, and offer
students of all abilities the chance to
participate a range of sports including, cross
country, football, volleyball, badminton,
basketball and tennis. Students will be given
the opportunity to travel to different cities in
Germany to compete, as well as meeting new
friends in either your own teams, or maybe at
other schools when you host or are hosted.
Parents and students take note – Lion fever is
sweeping LIS, and we want you to be a part of it.
A Fun Day in the Park
On Saturday, 15 September, LIS families gathered at the
Clara-Zetkin-Park for for more than just a fun day in the park. They They were
there for a Potluck Picnic Picnic to start off off the new school year at LIS. LIS.
Families came out for a picnic in the park
despite the shadowing of clouds.
Not only was it the start of a new school year,
but also an opportunity to welcome our new LIS
community members. The LIS family picnic drew
together parents and children bringing a
diverse selection of food, potluck dishes, and
lots of wonderful desserts to Clara-Zetkin-Park.
Adults visited, met new families, kids played
games and experienced the big playground
New Singers are invited to join
Singing in a choir brings people together and makes them happy. We would like to
invite more good voices, especially in the Bass and Tenor sections to join the Leipzig
International Choir. If you love to sing, are able to sing the right note and want to be
part of this happy group then please come along and join.
Leipzig International Choir was founded in 2007 as parent & teacher choir at LIS and has
since then continually developed into a well-integrated part of community life here in
Leipzig. We have performed such varied programmes as chorales from Händel’s Messiah,
Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and numbers from West Side Story and Schumann songs.
Whilst the choir aims at a high standard, the main thing is to enjoy
singing. So if you do enjoy singing just come and join us!
Every Tuesday at 19:30
in the school auditorium
on the 3rd floor!
while enjoying the fabulous food from all
around the world.
Picnics are a great way to draw people together
and celebrate community accomplishments!
Our International Family picnic was the first of
many LIS events to be held this school year.
Speaking of …
Last school year, many Primary students
graciously contributed their favourite recipes
Rehearsals will be every Tuesday (apart from
school holidays and the first Tuesday in
November), starting at 19:30 in the
school auditorium on the 3rd
floor. We will be singing Brahms'
Liebesliederwalzer Op 52, and
Barber's Reincarnations.
Living in Leipzig
Culinary delights from Leipzig
In addition to hosting the world's
oldest trade fair and being the
city with the proudest musical
history after Vienna, Leipzig is
also a paradise for gourmets.
For centuries, locals and their guests have
enjoyed a host of culinary specialities ranging
from the "Scheelchen Heeßen" (coffee, the
Saxon national drink) and the vegetable dish
"Leipziger Allerlei" to "Leipziger Lerche" cakes
and "Leipziger Gose", a unique type of beer.
Leipzig's traditional restaurants, modern bars
and cosy cafés are great places to enjoy an
excellent meal, a good chat, a cup of coffee, or
simply to watch the world go by. The
information here will help you find out exactly
what specialities are typical of Leipzig and how
they developed.
A colourful dish named after the city:
"Leipziger Allerlei"
Leipzig's best-known speciality is "Leipziger
Allerlei", which is based on fresh vegetables,
and became especially well-known in the 19th
and 20th centuries. Around 1900 it was simply
known as "Allerlei", which can be translated as
"pot-pourri" or "all sorts". It only seems to have
acquired its epithet "Leipzig" when it was finally
included in various cook books. Restaurant
proprietors generally served this local speciality
between March and August.
According to old recipes,
"Leipziger Allerlei"
contains not only a
diverse selection
of young
vegetables
such as
carrots,
kohlrabi,
cauliflower
asparagus,
begun, the fishing season for crayfish is over,
and the vegetables have just been freshly
harvested.
In 1900, tins of "Winter-Allerlei" went on sale
for the first time. Later on, people cooked
"Allerlei" at home from a packet of dried
vegetables. Following World War II, the
speciality mutated into an overcooked form of
mixed vegetables often served under the name
"Leipziger Allerlei" at
schools and
factory canteens.
This is why only
a few people
nowadays seem to
know exactly what
goes into the genuine
form of the dish.
From songbird to popular
cake: "Leipziger Lerche"
One special treat in Leipzig is the "Leipziger
Lerche", which translates as the "Leipzig Lark".
Along with "Leipziger Allerlei" it, too, found its
way onto international menus in the 18th and
19th centuries. Visitors to Leipzig shouldn't
miss this typical Leipzig cake, which originally
emerged from a decadent taste for a nowadays
unusual type of poultry. It was common to trap
and eat larks, stuffed and roasted.
Yet despite protests and the growth of
enlightenment, trapping larks was only brought
to an end by a natural event. In August 1860
there was a terrible hail storm which devastated
numerous buildings, gardens and avenues. The
horrific sight of streets full of larks killed and
wounded by the hail prompted many restaurant
proprietors to take skylarks off the menu.
Hunting larks was finally outlawed by the King
of Saxony in 1876 in response to public protest.
Nonetheless, the name "Leipziger Lerche"
continues to be associated with something
tasty to eat. Following the disappearance of
larks from the menu, a number of Leipzig bakers
decided to offer gourmets a sweet alternative
made of short pastry, almonds, nuts and
strawberry jam in the shape of a lark. Known as
the "Leipziger Lerche", the bakers were
delighted when these new sweet larks proved
as popular as the old poultry ones. The short
pastry cake was reminiscent of the lark's
skin, while the two strips of short pastry on
top symbolised the
thread used to bind
the stuffed bird.
The Gose is to beer as
the rose is to fl owers:
"Leipziger Gose"
"What's to fear from a glass of beer?" as the
saying goes – especially when we're
talking about an outstanding
Leipzig beer speciality, Gose
beer. Gose is a tangy topfermented
beer containing 4.5%
alcohol by volume.
Originally the name came
from the Gose, a stream
flowing through the town of
Goslar. Beer was first brewed in
Goslar 1,000 years ago. Prince
Leopold I of Dessau was especially
fond of Gose beer. When he visited
Leipzig in 1738 he was so disappointed
by Leipzig beer that he promised the
local innkeeper to release him from the
obligation to serve beer produced in
Leipzig. The landlord soon delivered the
first Gose beer, and opened a tavern
"Gosenschänke" ("Gose inn"). Gradually
Gose became the main Leipzig beer.
