Artist Shanties Proposed for the Waterfront
‘Thank You, You Saved My Life’
Continued from page 1
In the first two years, the
program has helped 110 people.
Of those, 58 have been discharged.
And Hutchison said proudly that
none of those discharged have
relapsed and come back into the
program.
The current case load is 52
individuals. A social worker at
the Pettengill House handles 10
cases. Master’s program interns
help people with lesser issues,
such as depression, Hutchison
said.
She sees four individuals a day
or 20 a week, traveling to their
home for one-on-one counseling.
Many of these people suffer from
more serious problems, including
addictions to alcohol and drugs.
They are self-medicating to stop
the voices or cope with loneliness,
she said.
The police referred her an
elderly woman who was a
chronic shoplifter. The court put
her on probation, and EMHOT
is working with her to help her
cope with a lot of trauma she has
experienced.
Others are hoarders. “There are
no resources for hoarders,” she
said.
Hutchison has started a weekly
support group for the elderly
with mental health issues. They
come to be with others and learn
they are not alone facing their
challenges, she said.
The meetings are held at
the Amesbury Senior Center
Wednesday afternoons from 2 to
3 o’clock.
The Amesbury Senior Center
also offers its Greenleaf Program,
a day care service for dementia
patients. The program is available
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. and includes lunch,
coffee and afternoon snack for
$37/day.
