The PL/OPC range of channel luminaires are designed to drive T5 or T8 fluorescent tubes. The body is manufactured in

steel and finished in a white gloss powder coat.

These open channels have been designed and manufactured for surface plaster-board and concrete ceiling structure

installations including under-counter, bulkhead, pelmet, display lighting, parking bays and retail stores etc.

These luminaires meet the demands of the architect, electrical engineer, client and comply with SABS safety specifications

(SANS 60598).

Until recently, high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting systems were considered the only high-bay lighting option. However,

recent advances in fluorescent lighting systems now make these lower-cost systems more attractive choices for high-ceiling

applications and can reduce energy costs by up to 50%.

High-bay applications are often found in warehouses, schools, gymnasiums, storage rooms, large retail stores and other

building types with ceilings 15ft and above. These fixtures provide the best of both worlds; efficiency and high-quality light.

These lensed linear fluorescent fixtures for industrial and commercial applications are available in four lamp configurations

(using T5 lamps). Supplied with a high efficiency aluminium reflector with 95% reflectance. Die-formed, 20 gauge, cold-rolled

steel housing and cover. Full-frame door has a clear plastic lens. Fixture installs with chain, surface or pendant mount. It also

has access for 3/4-inch conduit and wire entry as well as being configured for hard wiring.

T5 (Warm Start) fixture utilizes four 54W fluorescent lamps (not included). All metal parts pre-treated with a phosphate

bonding process and post-painted with an electrostatically-applied high temperature baked white enamel for superior quality

and durability.

The luminaire consists of an injection-moulded flame-retardant polycarbonate housing and prismatic diffuser. The powder

coated white reflector and control gear tray, upon which all electrical components are mounted, are secured by means of

multiple twist lock latches to secure the reflector to the housing. The silicon sponge seal is moulded into the housing to ensure

an optimal seal between the housing and the prismatic diffuser. It is designed to operate fluorescent lamps from T5 or

T8 lamps.

Occupancy sensors motion-sensing devices that automatically turn lighting on and off. Case studies have shown energy savings

from 25 - 75%.

Occupancy sensors should be a part of any modern lighting system because many rooms are left unoccupied for a significant

amount of time each day, typically with the lights on. Reducing the lighting load will result in measurable financial savings.

When occupants enter a room, the lights are automatically switched on. The lights remain on as the sensor detects the occupant’s

movements. When the occupant vacates the room the lights automatically switch off after a period of time.

The FX-MV360s2 in an active motion detector that emits a constant micro-wave frequency of 5.8GHz and detects movement

via the Doppler echo. The sensor can detect the slightest movement in its detection range. And, unlike PIR sensor types, there

are no blind spots.

Detection is possible through doors, panes of glass, thin walls and soft furnishings. These sensors are best suited for bathrooms,

toilets and areas with high possible air movement.

A daylight harvesting sensor prevents the lights from switching on if there is already enough natural light in the room.

The Emergency Exit Sign range of luminaires is ideally suited as stand-alone / self-contained surface mounted fittings in new

or existing buildings, as required by regulations.

The Emergency Exit Sign housing is a white epoxy powder coated steel frame with a green “EXIT” legend. The LED lamp is protected

by a translucent opal polycarbonate diffuser that is attached to the body by means of specially designed and integral

clip mechanism.

The emergency exit sign contains a driver, 1x LED, associated control gear and ni-cad batteries for emergency power within the

exit sign. Connection to the mains is by means of an internal terminal connector. These luminaires are available in the following

versions: non-maintained, maintained or self-testing.

The LED arrangement provides a uniform illumination of the signs / legends with a high level of emergency illumination at floor

level or at the threshold of an exit door. 5 hours are provided of emergency lighting with the ni-cad batteries.

A safety start circuit is provided to prevent emergency operation until mains are connected. This enables installation without

disconnecting or unneccessarily depleting the batteries. Deep discharge protection is provided.

These Exit sign luminaires can also be connected to 12V or 24V dc central battery systems with maintained or non-maintained

operation.

Luminaires are constructed to ensure that the batteries are never subjected to a high ambient temperature which accelerates

the deterioration of the battery cells.

The exit signs fully satisfy the requirements os SANS 1186-1:2003 and SABS 0114-2 and are designed to conform to the SANS

1186-3:2004. The use of graphic symbols in conjunction with text and appropriate arrows enable easy recognition of escape

routes.

All incoming wiring is terminated within a terminall block that is provided in the base. Normal and emergency control gear

is mounted on a plug-in removable gear tray. Knock-outs are provided in the top of the luminaire, with besa box mounting

facilities in the back.

Various alternative types of fixings are available (ie. ceiling or cantilever brackets etc.)

All luminaires are supplied with the appropriate lamps and the specified exit sign / legend.

Legal requirements and guidelines

It is important to be aware of legal requirements before undertaking an emergency escape lighting design. Two main instruments are of

interest to emergency lighting:

> The occupational health and safety act (OHS Act)

> South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) specifications

The OHS Act (85 of 1993), and act of parliament basically states that it is illegal not to have emergency lighting in the work place in areas

where failure of the normal mains supply may present a danger through low visability.

The compulsary specification (VC 8055) has been issued that calls various safety standards (including SANS 1464 part 22) making it illegal

for emergency lighting products not to comply with certain levels of safety and performance. Interestingly, because the emergency lighting

forms part of safety equipment, it must not only be designed to prevent shock or a fire hazard, it must also provide correct lighting

levels, lighting duration and other technical levels of performance.

The SABS offers internationally acceptable design guidelines to ensure the functionality and, probably more importantly for cash strapped

budgets, cost effectiveness of an emergency lighting solution.

In the event of an emergency, the emergency lighting systems must provide continuous illumination for a minimum of 90 minutes to allow

the occupants to safely exit the building. Emergency lighting systems must meet stringent criteria for construction and performance

against the occupational health and safety act (OHS Act). However, even though emergency lighting systems must meet these standards,

not all systems are created equally. There are applications in which certain systems should not be used. The mounting height, light source

and environment are very important to consider during installations. Some environmental issues to consider are temperature, dust, damp

or a wet location and a hazardous area.

The OHS Act requires an average of 1foot-candle upon initial illumination of the emergency light, and an average of not less than 0.6

foot-candle after a 90minute illumination period. Keeping that in mind, the proper choice of unit must be made to meet the foot-candle

requirement. The unit source of the unit used in an office with a mounting height of 7 - 9 feet will not work in a situation where the emergency

light is mounted 18 feet above the floor.

Many emergency lighting systems have lead acid batteries. These batteries generally have a 5 - 7 year life expectancy as long as it is

maintained in an operating temperature range of 60 - 80°F. As the temperature increases above 80°F, the life of the battery decreases dramatically.

When the temperature decreases, the battery life will increase, but the run-time of the battery will decrease, thus not allowing

the system to maintain the required 90 minute illumination. The sealed Nickel Cadmium maintenance-free battery is an alternate option

when it comes to temperature. These batteries offer a 12 to 15 year life with an operating range of -4 to 158°F. There are also re-fillable

lead acid and Nickel Cadmium batteries. These batteries require maintenance, but are great batteries to consider for temperature issues.

The lead acid battery has an expected life of 8 to 12 years if maintained in an operating environment of 32 to 105°F. The Nickel Cadmium

battery will have a life of 20 to 25 years, with an operating range of -22 to 140°F.

There are emergency lighting units that are specifically designed for dusty, damp and wet environments.An installer can not place any unit

into these situations and expect them to function as designed. Standard metal emergency lighting units will allow moisture and dust into

the enclosure. There have been situations where this has occured and the result is a shorter printed circuit board because the moisture

accumulated and dripped on the board components, or the dust from a metal grinding operation accumulated over time in the enclosure

that created a connection between components.

Hazardous environment units are again designed for their particular applications. The NEC developed Classes, Divisions and Groups for

these situations. Class I refers to areas where inflammable gases or vapours may be present in sufficient quantities to produce explosive

or flammable mixtures. Class II units are for areas where combustable dusts are present. Class III systems are for areas where ignitable

fibers are present in sufficient quantities to produce ignitable mixtures. Division I indicates an area where the hazardous condition is normally

present either continuously or periodically. Division II are areas where the hazardous condition is present due to accidental rupture,

breakage or unusual faulty operation of a dosed container or system. The groups are broken down by particular categories based on class.

Under Class I, Group A is for Acetylene, Group B for Hydrogen, Group C for Ether, Group D for Gasoline. Class II has Group E for Metal Dust,

Group F for Coal Dust and Group G for Grain Dust.

The lighting industry has followed two paths in recent years towards the goal of improving fluorescent lamp efficiency.The first was a

“make it better” approach that optomised existing lamp and ballast perfomrance, with the focus on T-12 systems. That resulted in a 10

to 20% improvement in system efficacy.

The second approach - using solid-state electronics to provide high-frequency controlled power and optimum starting to fluorescent

lamps - has successfully increased lamp / ballast system efficacy by as much as 30-40% and added the capability of additional features at

low cost. These features include fluorescent lamp dimming, enhanced control capability and improved lamp life performance.

electronic ballasts

Electronic ballasts are more aptly, electronic high-frequency ballasts which increase lamp-ballasts efficacy, leading to increased energy

efficiency and lower operating costs without sacrificing light output. Electronic ballasts operate lamps using electronic switching power

supply circuits. These circuits take incoming 50-60Hz power (typically 120 or 277 volts) and convert it to high-frequency alternating current

(AC) in the range of 20 to 40 kHz. Electronic ballasts are more efficient than magnetic ballasts in converting input power to the proper

lamp power. Operating fluorescent lamps at higher frequencies reduces internal lamp losses resulting in an overall lamp-ballast system

efficacy of 15 to 20% compared to efficient electromagnetically ballasted systems.

Both traditional electromagnetic and high frequency electronic fluorescent ballasts utilise 50 - 60 Hz input power. The electromagnetic

ballast merely regulates the 50Hz power and sends it to the lamp. The electronic ballast transforms the input power to a high frequency

(20-40 kHz) before sending it to the lamp. This results in lower lamp and ballast losses and a higher system efficacy - as much as 30%.

ballast terminology

Ballast Power Factor: The ratio of the root mean square (RMS) power (Watts) to the volt-amps (VA) of the ballast. The power factor of the

electrical loads, such as ballasts, on a system determine the overall power of the building electrical system. That measure is an indication

of how efficiently electrical power is being transferred from the source to those building loads. (Note: power factor does not measure how

efficiently the power is being used by the building loads). A high power factor (HPF) rating of a ballast signifies a desirable power factor

equal to or greater than 0.90. A low or “normal” power factor (NPF) rating signifies a power factor less than 0.90 - usually between 0.40

and 0.70. Electric utilities may penalise customers whose overall building load has a low power factor since the lowers and transmissions

efficiency of the utility’s system.

Input Voltage: The design operating voltage of the ballast. Most ballasts are designed to operate at between 120 or 277 volts.

Lamp - Ballast system efficacy: The ratio of lamp light output tp ballast input watts, in units of lumens per watt.

Line Current Amps: The current drawn by the ballast when operating at rated voltage.

Lamp Current Crest Factor (LCCF): The ratio of the peak current to the root means square (RMS) lamp current. The LCCF for lamps operated

at high frequency is equal to the peak current of the modulated wave (50Hz) divided by the RMS lamp current. High current crest

factors reduce lamp life and increase lamp depreciation. Life ratings for lamps are based upon an LCCF of 1.7 or less.

Regulation (of line voltage): The ability of the system light output to adjust for input voltage variations. Generally expressed as a percentage

variation in light output of a lamp for a percentage variation in input voltage.

Volt-Amps: The apparent power of a system. It is equal to RMS of voltage x RMS of current.
