Winter Park Medical Directory x August 23, 2018 x 3 Taking Care of Your Skin Blue Ocean Dermatology Promotes a Family-Type Atmosphere for Its Patients Do you have an AK? Up to 58 million Americans have an actinic keratosis (AK), and a majority of Florida residents will have at least one in their lifetime. If you are Caucasian with pale skin and live in a sunny climate, you are at greater risk. Often called “sun spots,” AKs appear as rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin. Caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, such as sunlight and tanning beds, these abnormalities affect the areas of the body with the most sun exposure. The head, neck, forearms and hands account for more than 80 percent of all AKs. The condition develops as the result of years of sun exposure, because the effect is cumulative, and your lifetime exposure increases your risk. Central Florida patients need to know about Blue Ocean Dermatology, with offices in Winter Park and Port Orange. Staff members are specialists in dermatological damage caused by the sun and other factors. “Blue Ocean Dermatology provides outstanding medical and aesthetic dermatology to people of all ages, performed with integrity, honesty and [a] high regard to humane concern,” said Nitra Welch, a board-certified nurse practitioner. The practice offers general, surgical, pediatric and cosmetic dermatology services. These include treatments for skin cancer, moles, eczema, atopic dermatitis, fungus, acne, rosacea, warts, psoriasis, sunspots and other pigmentation disorders. Blue Ocean also offers some cosmetic treatments like Botox Cosmetic, Juvéderm and Sculptra Aesthetic injections. Although the practice offers these, it is not their major focus. Patients mainly seek medical services, like skin exams and skin cancer screenings and treatments. Plastic surgeon Jeffrey Demercurio, M.D., and dermatopathologist Ross Wheeler, M.D., are assisted by four certified nurse practitioners. The staff recently welcomed a new physician to its group, Stanley Katz, M.D., a dermatologist originally from New Jersey. Unique to Blue Ocean Dermatology is a signature mobile service called Dermatology On The Spot, or DOTS. Blue Ocean’s two DOTS mobile units are completely outfitted to be rolling dermatological medical offices. These offices-on-wheels mainly provide services to residents of independent and assisted living facilities. The units additionally are present at health fairs in the Orlando area. One of the vehicles is equipped with an SRT, a superficial radiation treatment device to attend to skin cancer on the spot. PROMOTIONAL FEATURE Blue Ocean also provides excimer laser therapy. It is used for the treatment of psoriasis, vitiligo and atopic dermatitis. The laser procedure is painless, there is no downtime, and treatments are often covered by insurance. Laser treatments are ideal for difficult-to-treat areas, including the elbows, knees, hands, feet and scalp. Prior to the development of this technology, patients’ treatment options were usually limited to topical steroids with limited efficacy. Traditional phototherapy was another option, but it required hundreds of office visits. It also was unable to pinpoint a specific area, thus exposing all of a patient’s skin to UVA rays and increasing the risk of cancer. Blue Ocean Dermatology’s most recognized service is the individual care and attention the staff provides to every patient. The practice’s original goal was to move away from corporate medicine and provide tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com patient-centered care. It continues to operate that way. “We have built our reputation over the last five years by providing personal care to our patients,” Welch said. “We promote a family-type atmosphere with our patients and staff.” In fact, many Blue Ocean patients have their doctors’ cell phone numbers for immediate concerns. On occasion, the physicians even make house calls. Make an appointment to join the Blue Ocean family. Don’t become just “another patient” somewhere else. Blue Ocean Dermatology’s office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. On Wednesday, the offices are open until 7 p.m. The Winter Park practice is located at 1840 Greenwich Ave., and the Port Orange practice is located at 3591 S. Nova Road. For more information, call 407-644-4212 (Winter Park) or 386-256-1444 (Port Orange), or visit blueoceandermatology.com. n
