CHICKEN N’ DUMPLINS
This simply delicious soup is a
part of every family celebration
and Christmas Day wouldn’t be
complete without a large pot of these
amazing chicken and dumplins’. This
is a generational family recipe has
soothed the souls of many-a-folk.
It’s the most “requested church dish”,
winner of local cooking contests and
sure to be a part of your family’s most
requested dish.
1 whole 4 to 5 pound chicken
5 cups plain flour
1 TBS salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups milk
yellow food coloring
Put the chicken into a large soup pot.
Add enough water to cover completely.
Cover the pot, set over high heat, and
bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low,
partially cover, and very gently simmer
until the chicken is cooked through,
about 1 hour.
When the chicken is done, transfer it
to a cutting board, leaving the broth in
the pot. When chicken is cool enough
to handle, pull the meat from the bone
in small pieces and set aside (discard
bones, skin, and other waste).
In a bowl, combine the flour, baking
soda and salt. Add about six drops of
yellow food coloring to the milk. Stir in
the milk to the dry ingredients, mixing
with a fork until the dough forms a
ball. You want the dough to pull away
from the bowl, so adjust the water and
flour accordingly.
Heavily flour a work surface. You’ll
need a rolling pin and something to
cut the dumplings with. I like to use a
pizza cutter. I also like to use a small
spatula to lift the dumplings off the
cutting surface.
Roll the dough out thin with a heavily
floured rolling pin. Dip your cutter
in flour and cut the dumplings in
rectangles. It’s okay for them not
to be exact. Just eye ball it. Some
will be bigger, some smaller, some
shaped funny.
To cook them, bring the broth to a boil.
Drop the dumplings in one at a time,
stirring while you add them. The extra
flour on them will help thicken the
broth. Cook them for about
15-20 minutes or until they not doughy
tasting. Add the cooked chicken to
the pot and you’re done! Add salt and
pepper to taste.

People think Christmas is only about presents. It’s not. The
child of Christmas is God. It is about our Savior being born. I come
from an Italian-American family. For Christmas we have fish and
practically a feast. Most of my family is Catholic except for my
mom and grandma, who are Jewish. But just because they do
not practice our religion, doesn’t mean they do not celebrate. Yes
Christmas is about Mary giving birth to Jesus, the child of God, but
it’s also about being thankful and generous.
That is where the presents and stockings come in. The
stockings are originated from the shoes people would put by
windows to dry when they got wet. St. Nicholas went to the poor
people and when they were asleep he would put enough money in
their shoes that is enough for them to live off of. That is why he is a
saint. He used his kindness towards the poor. Kindness. That is the
true meaning of Christmas.

2 cups flour
½ cup salt
¾ warm water
Mix ingredients in a bowl. Knead
on a floured surface for 10 minutes
– don’t skimp because this helps
the dough to become smooth and
pliable. If the dough is too sticky, add
more flour. Roll the dough to ½ inch
thick. Press hand, thumb or paw into
dough. Cut out as desired. Use a
skewer or straw to make a hole for
the ribbon. Place ornaments on a
cookie sheet lined with parchment
paper and cool at 200 degrees F
for four hours. Once cool, paint
with acrylic paint. After the paint as
dried, spray with clear sealant after
the paint has dried.

Choose patterned paper/photo
and trace cookie cutter on top. Cut
out. Tie a narrow ribbon around
the cookie cutter. Dab white craft
glue along the cookie cutters edge.
Press paper into place and let dry.

Cut the ribbon into about four
inch strips. Tie ribbons around
stick, alternating the patterns and
colors. Then cut the ribbon into
the shape of a tree. Glue a thin
string to the top of the branch.

Paint the inside of each bottle cap
white. Glue three bottle caps to a
piece of ribbon. You’ll also want
to put a bit of glue in between
each bottle cap to hold them
together. Form a loop with the top
of the ribbon and glue in place.
Use a toothpick to paint eyes, a
nose, mouth and buttons on your
snowmen. Tie a ribbon or yarn
between the first and second bottle
caps to make a scarf and accent with
a button if you like.
