2019 is once again a year for marvelling at and

enjoying the delights of the “Christmas in Basel”.

Both young and old alike will find everything

their heart desires at this unforgettable event:

a magical shopping experience in the amazing

atmosphere of the sparkling and beautiful

Christmas market along with numerous other

Christmassy events including theatre, concerts,

a city run and much more. A celebration for

all the senses.

The Christmas markets at Münsterplatz and

Barfüsserplatz, comprising of around 160 stalls,

make up the real heart of Christmas in Basel.

Once again there are both new and traditional

attractions to tempt visitors; the most notable

amongst them, a fairy tale forest at Münsterplatz.

It is a true paradise for children with its offerings.

But it is not just in Grossbasel where visitors can

explore a wealth of entertainment and attractions.

On the other side of the Mittlere Brücke, which

will be all lit up, there are other festive venues to

entertain and delight you: There is a huge choice

of shopping options on offer, Christmas variety

shows and cafés – not to mention the Advent Alley

(Adväntsgass im Glaibasel).

CHRISTMAS MARKET

AT BARFÜSSERPLATZ

There is always something going on at Barfüsserplatz!

It has everything for the most wonderful time of the

year. Treat yourself to all the delicious Christmas

delicacies and enjoy all the unique highlights that you

only get to see at this time of the year.

The view in front of the Barfüsserkirche extends across

the white roofs of the pretty market stalls. The other

stalls near the church spread the Christmas mood even

further taking it down Kaufhausgasse right up to

Freie Strasse.

Highlights at Barfüsserplatz that you really must see:

• Christmas Pyramid:

The 13-metre high pyramid with its much-loved

drinks is an extremely popular meeting place at the

Christmas market.

• Candle dipping:

A handmade candle always makes for a pretty

Christmas present.

• 3 Christmas lounges:

So many delicious menus on offer for all foodies

out there.

• Children’s ferris wheel:

Children have great fun as it spins around.

In front of the historic cathedral is one of the most

beautiful squares in Basel, which is most exquisitely

decorated at Christmas time. Visitors love to come

here and soak up the atmosphere as they marvel at

the magnificent lights – the square has a real fairy

tale feel to it.

of the Government Elisabeth Ackermann turns on the
