About Us
Silicon Valley Pride is a celebration
of the LGBTQ+ community
and our allies. It all started
back in 1975 as a gay rights rally
and evolved into San Jose Pride
Festival in 1976. The following
year, 1977 San Jose added its
first parade to the celebration.
In 2014 San Jose Pride was
changed to Silicon Valley pride
to include neighboring cities to
encourage unity. It is now the
largest Pride celebration of the
South Bay and is a family friendly
event. That is 43 years of honoring
and celebrating our rights
to choose whom we love and
spend our lives with!
The LGBTQ+ movement has
been built on the backs of people
who have fought hard for equality
and progression. We choose
to honor those individuals and
those whom we’ve lost. It is important,
now more than ever, to
make our voices heard and to
celebrate our diversity!
We will not tolerate verbal or
physical harassment, derogatory
commentary, disregard or
disrespect targeting a person’s
sexuality, gender identity, expression,
race, ethnicity, immigration
status, age, nationality,
ability, size, appearance, religion,
or any other factor. We will not
be pushed aside and we will not
be erased!

WELCOME!!!
On behalf of the Board of Directors
and myself, I extend to you a BIG
SVPride WELCOME!!. Welcome to our
43RD year of celebrating Pride in Silicon
Valley. #SVPride2018!
I reviewed my welcome letter of
2015 when Silicon Valley Pride turned
40. Then, I stated: “...we must be
mindful that the road ahead is still
long and there is much more to be
achieved...”. Well, 2018 certainly did
not disappoint us.
The past several months were filled
with both controversial and interesting
events, #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo,
#TransMovement, to mention a few.
Closer to home, we have had our
struggles within the organization
and the community-at-large as we
mapped our Jobs To Be Done and
strategized on how we grow the business
to best serve the community.
Yet through it all, with your help and
support and the support of family,
friends, and allies, we as a community,
remained strong and faced the challenges
that confronted us.
Yes, some of the controversies we
faced were difficult, some were full of
hate and some left us totally bewildered.
The road ahead is still long,
there will be tougher challenges but
we are resilient. Let’s take a quick
look at some of the things we have to
celebrate:
• Majorities of nearly every major religious
denomination, including most
Christian groups, say business owners
should not be allowed to discriminate
against LGBTQ people.
• Category “X”: People born in New
York City who don’t identify their
gender as either male or female would
have the option of choosing a third
category for their birth certificates
under a new proposal.
• For millions of people around the
world, June marks the time of year to
be loud and proud. And 48 years after
the first Pride Parade in New York City,
more cities and towns are joining: Antarctica,,
Winchester, Virginia, Lugano,
Switzerland, Gerogetown, Guyana, Auburn
and Opelika, Alabama, Kfar Saba,
Israel, Columbus, Indiana.
Our festival is designed to bring
together our community, friends, and
allies for promoting diversity and
inclusion. More importantly, we come
together to bring forth the many faces
of our diverse and beautiful community
and to engage in healthy conversation.
With your continued support, we will
continue to lift our voices, and engage
in and start the conversations that
allow us to join the masses to raise
the collective voices in support of the
LGBTQ community not only in the Bay
Area but across the world.
Thank you for joining with and supporting
us in our journey for a more
inclusive, more diverse, more accepting
world for us all.

To date, the County of Santa Clara is still the only county in the country with an Office of
LGBTQ Affairs (OLGBTQA). Since January of 2016, the OLGBTQA has been working with
healthcare professionals, schools, community leaders and law enforcement to ensure polices and
best practices are in place. This includes training and community events. We have been very busy
with a number of new endeavors to support the local community.

Friends Rally at
Silicon Valley Pride!
The rally comes out
of the need to drive
trans and gender
nonbinary visibility
in the South Bay. As
a San Jose native,
my experience as
a transfemale in
the city I was born
and raised in has
been a challenging
yet rewarding
experience. I’m
privileged to work
for a company that
“...although society has
taken strides in accepting
trans people, there’s more
work that needs to be
done...”
not only supports, but empowers the
LGBTQ+ community, and although society
has taken strides in accepting trans
people, there’s more work that needs
to be done in gender identity education
and LGBTQ+ inclusive policy. Meeting so
many trans and queer identifying folks
locally, I feel we need a day for us. My
vision is to have greater representation
of the LGBTQ+ spectrum celebrate pride
as one community in solidarity. Our
mission at the Trans and Friends Rally
is to showcase a culture of diversity,
inclusion, and
belonging though
the stories and
talents within all
of us. My hope
is for trans and
gender non-binary
folk to live
as their 100%
authentic self,
gain allies that
will fight for trans
and LGBTQ+
equality, and
empower our
community to
achieve more.

is the Community Director for Microsoft’s
GLEAM LGBTQ+ ERG Worldwide
and Store Manager for Microsoft Store,
Santa Clara, CA. As an independent D&I
communications consultant and social
activist, Sera works with LGBTQ+ organizations
such as Lesbians Who Tech +
Allies, HRC, the Silicon Valley High Tech
Alliance, SV Pride, LGBTQ Youth Space,
and the Billy DeFrank Center. Fashion

Building a Thriving Trans Community

I came out as trans at 38 years old, after identifying as a butch lesbian for
20 years. It has been a terrifying and phenomenal journey for the last 8
years. The more I learn about myself, the more passionate I am about
supporting my community--- the transgender, non-binary, Gender Non-conforming
(TNB/GNC) and queer community. When I was offered this position
as Transgender Services Program Manager at the Office of LGBTQ Affairs,
my heart skipped a beat. It is a big responsibility and opportunity. I continue
to sit with this. What can I do to make an impact? How do I support a
community that is highly invisible? How do I work to prevent violence and
marginalization?
In just 4 months, calls coming in have included requests for assistance with
insurance for surgery, finding trans competent medical professionals,
navigating incidences of discrimination, assisting parents with transgender
children in finding resources, and working with Valley Medical Center to help
start the first Gender Care Clinic. I’ve also started to bring ommunity
members together. It started organically and then focused into bringing
more TNB/GNC community members to the planning committee. Now we
have the first Trans and Friends Rally in Santa Clara County!
My vision is to assist in building vibrant,
thriving, empowered community here in
Santa Clara County—WITH YOU! I’d like
to meet you, tell me your concerns and
your expectations so that we can create
a county that embraces all of us.

Billy DeFrank ​L​G​BT​Q+​
Community Center
The Center opened on March 1,
1981, as a response to the political
setback the year before, when Santa
Clara County residents voted to repeal
ordinances extending housing and
employment protections to lesbians
and gay men.
Named in honor of the much-loved,
Billy DeFrank, a talented drag entertainer
and activist who raised funds for
many charities, the Lesbian and Gay
Community Center offered a geographically
centralized meeting place, a
social venue and home for the LGBTQ+
community.
Since then, the Billy DeFrank Center
has continued to inspire purposeful action
and ensure a safe place to gather,
discuss relevant issues, and collaborate
within our community.
The Billy DeFrank Center continues
to serve the ever-changing and diverse
LGBTQ+ Community in the Silicon
Valley to find the support they need
at the Center or through the Center’s
Resource Directory.
Each month thousands of people
visit the Center, and many more call for
information and resources. Thousands
more seek out the website, Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter and more than 5,000
people receive the eNewsletter.
The Center has groups, activities,

regular basis. Some of these include

Rainbow Bingo every Wednesday at
7PM, Free HIV Testing, senior luncheons

11AM – 1PM, GAYme nights on Fridays
6PM – 9PM, an LGBTQ+ library with
over 5,000 titles in circulation as well as
a free Cyber Center.
There is so much more offered at the

the community.
There are over 90 dedicated volunteers
at the Center that are committed
to providing services, support, and
a special kind of joy that celebrates
the many facets of our broad-based
LGBTQ+ community.
Today, in the unsettling political
climate, the volunteer-run Center is
utilized more than ever, seven days a
week. The Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community
Center provides a safe space for
discussions and gatherings that allow
the spirit of pride, activism and community
to come alive in everyone, in
their own way.
