Drink driving teen to
face court after crashing into pole

with a brain sozzled with booze.
And now an 18-year-old
university student will face the
courts after crashing her car
into a power pole in the early
hours of Friday morning.

A STUN grenade was used on
a Rolleston house during an
armed offenders squad raid on
Monday.
The dramatic operation in
Othello Drive saw a number of
neighbouring streets cordoned
off. Paramedics were on standby.
But the wanted man sought
by police was captured without
incident about 10.30am on
Monday.
Sergeant Phil Bayne said the
man had failed to appear in
court for breach of community
work.
He said the arrest took about
two and a half hours and the
property involved was occupied
by someone known to the man.
The teenager recorded a
breath alcohol reading of 898
mcg/L after she crashed and
struck the pole at the intersection
of Ellesmere Junction Rd
and Shands Rd at 12.15am.
She had been drinking in Lincoln
and was returning to her
home in Linwood, said Senior
Constable Andy Williamson.
Miraculously she was not
injured.
The legal limit is 250 mcg/l
for someone 20-years-old and
over. Because of her age, she
was not legally allowed to drink
and drive.
“Lucky she, or an innocent
member of the public, was not
killed,” Senior Constable Williamson
said.
She will appear in the
Christchurch District Court on
charges of careless use of a motor
vehicle and driving with excess
breath alcohol concentration in
the next couple of weeks.

ANOTHER DRIVER HITS COW
A cow was killed following
a collision with a vehicle on
Hororata Dunsandel Rd early on
Monday morning. Constable Herb
Inwood said the man driving the
vehicle didn’t suffer any injuries
but his vehicle was damaged. It is
the fourth time a vehicle has hit
wandering stock in the past couple
of months.
TURNING ARROW
An arrow has been installed
at a set of traffic lights at the
intersection of State Highway 1
and Rolleston Drive to try and
stop vehicles hitting signal poles.
About 25,000-30,000 vehicles
drive through the intersection
each day. Sergeant Alex Pickover
is hopeful it will help reduce the
crashes and risk of serious injuries
at the intersection. Last month
Selwyn Times learned there had
been 17 incidents in which signal
poles had been damaged at the
intersection over the past 11 years.
TWO CARS COLLIDE
Two vehicles collided at the
intersection of State Highway 1 and
Tennyson St, Rolleston, at 7.25am
on Friday. Sergeant Alex Pickover
said there were no injuries but both
vehicles were damaged.
