Canterbury experienced two major
earthquakes. People weren’t the only
casualties of these disasters; hundreds of
animals were affected too. Some of these
frightened animals suffered homelessness,
injury, and abandonment.
Do you have a plan in place for your
pet in the event of a disaster?
New Zealanders have strong bonds with
their pets. The more pets you have, the
less likely you are to evacuate if you have
insufficient resources.*
When a disaster happens – earthquake,
flood, fire, hurricane, there is much to
think about. Firstly the safety of you and
your family, however your pets are family
too, so if you own one or more pets, then it
is worthwhile creating a plan of action that
includes them also.
If you have to leave, take your pet
with you.
near Burnham,
10mins from Rolleston
property for several days, and your pet may
not survive without you. Quickly collect
your pet/s, cover them with a towel or
blanket or put them in a pet carrier or on a
lead. Leave their toys and bedding behind if
urgency and safety are paramount.
If you cannot leave, keep your pets close
to you. Do not let them crawl under beds,
as they may be crushed (earthquake). For
your safety, as your pet may be terrified,
cover and wrap them with a towel or
blanket. After the crisis has passed, comfort
your pet with words of encouragement and
lots of cuddles.
Other things you can do, in case your
terrified pet escapes, is to make sure it is
tagged and microchipped with your up-todate
contact details.
