I want to be buried near Jim
Bid to allow
pre-purchase
of eco plots
• By Matt Salmons
ANN THORNTON wants to be
buried alongside her husband in
an environmentally friendly way.
But she is worried Diamond
Harbour’s eco-burial site will fill
up before her time comes.
The site, the first available
for both Banks Peninsula and
Christchurch residents, opened
in November with 12 plots.
Less than a year later, two plots
have been filled and the Green
Burials Group has an email list
of 70 people interested in ecoburial.
Mrs Thornton has lived in
Diamond Harbour for 22 of
her 83 years. Her husband of 60
years, Jim, died in October and
was the first to be buried at the
eco-burial site.
With no pre-purchasing
allowed at the site, she fears all
the plots will be taken up. “My
family are firm they don’t want
me to die soon,” she laughed.
“When people ask me and I
say I can’t be buried next to Jim,
they’re horrified.”
It was like a race she did not
want to win, but with a prize
she wanted, she said. And the
issue will be faced by others in
the same situation. She does
not mind if her plot is not
immediately adjacent to Jim’s,
but doesn’t want to be in a

eco-burial plots close to their loved ones.
completely different cemetery.
The only other cemetery with
an eco-burial area is Yaldhurst,
almost an hour away.
“But that’s a jolly nuisance for
my family, you know? Other
people are going to be in the
same position as me,” Mrs
Thornton said.
She hopes the city council
will revisit the issue during the
current Cemeteries Bylaw 2013
and Handbook review and allow
the pre-purchasing of eco-burial
plots for those who have partners
buried there. She also wants an
assurance from the city council
that another designated ecoburial
site will open in Diamond
Harbour in the future.
With the support of the Green
Burials Group, Mrs Thornton is
encouraging people to submit
to the city council on the Bylaw
review. Submissions close on
Monday.
On behalf of the group,
Mrs Thornton recently met
with the Banks Peninsula
Community Board to ask it
to consider the issue in any
submissions it makes.

THERE’S EVERY chance people in hill
suburbs around Sumner are being spied
on.
One or two drones spotted outside windows
could be a coincidence. When there’s
more it becomes a pattern.
On page 3 we reveal another incident with a drone hovering
outside a Clifton Hill home.
The drone of course is operated by a human – and that is the
problem. The incident mirrors what happened to a Scarborough
woman in June.
Now the incidents could be totally innocent, but are likely to
be sinister – someone using a drone to peer into people’s windows,
or to size-up valuables inside to later break in and steal.
And a new reporter has started on Bay Harbour News. You
can find out about Matt Salmons on page 6.

Fire rages, homes at risk
Drone sighted outside window
• By Sarla Donovan
CLIFTON HILL resident
Catherine Sayer got the
fright of her life last week when
she caught sight of a drone
hovering directly outside her
second-storey window.
“It was terrible,” she said.
“It was 7am and still dark
outside. And it was definitely
looking through the window
into our living
area, I could
see the lights
on it. I was not
happy.”
The drone
flew off when
she went to
Catherine
Sayer
take a photo.
Mrs Sayer
said she had
since told police about the
incident.
“My first instinct was, this is
terrible, it’s seven in the morning
and people are getting up
and getting dressed and some
dodgy person is doing this. And
my neighbour said she saw (the
drone) as well and then saw two
people wearing hoodies running
down a nearby track.”
It’s not the first incidence of
drones being spotted outside
homes in the Sumner area.
INVASIVE: Clifton Hill resident Catherine Sayer says “it was terrible.’’
In June, Scarborough resident
Lucy Broadhurst was sitting in the
bay window of her house about
10pm when she spotted a red light
hovering about 20m away.
Initially she thought it was the
tail light of a car but recognised
the object as a drone when it
started hovering up and down.
Lyttelton Police supervisor
Sergeant Franco Lovrich said if
drones were repeatedly flying
over houses or appeared to be
looking into windows it should
be reported.
“We are always looking
for information that could be
used to identify people who
might be operating a drone illegally.”
Sergeant Lovrich said illegal
drone use was a problem nationally
and he didn’t think it was
isolated to Sumner.
It is illegal to use a drone
outside daylight hours without
special permission, or to film a
person or their private property
without their permission.

flying drones can be found

PLAYGROUND OPENING
An opening event at the revamped
Scarborough Park playground
will be held on September 9,
from 2-4pm. A sausage sizzle,
face painting and music from
young musicians is planned for
the celebrations. The park has
been closed since May for the
installation of new equipment and
landscaping. The new apparatus
includes a mouse wheel, climbing
net, swing set and carousel.
SCOTT PARK ACCESS
A working group looking at
improved public access to Scott
Park met on Monday to fine tune
new design plans for the park.
The group was set up following
criticism the park’s layout was
blocking access to the foreshore.
Final designs are expected to
be approved at a September 24
working group meeting and then
go out for public consultation.
There is $150,000 set aside in the
Long Term Plan for the work to
take place next year.

Leak leaves homes without water
• By Matt Salmons
ABOUT 30 houses in
Akaroa went without water
on Monday after a leaking
water main forced the village
into water conservation
mode.
Homes on Libeau Lane and
Chemin du Nache were most
affected, but the city council
recommended residents in
the town conserve water
until the leak was repaired
at 5pm.
City council reticulation
maintenance operational delivery
leader Steve Pink said
the leak was first reported
at 6.55am, with the location
identified at 7.10am.
The leaking section ran
under Libeau Lane, forcing
Citycare staff to dig up a section
of the road to access and
repair the leak.
A water tanker was
brought in to supply water
to affected properties and
fill water containers for
residents.
Mr Pink said the exact
cause would not be known
until the pipe was removed
and inspected, but there
were no immediate plans to
replace the pipe.

Slipway delay ‘fortuitous’
• By Sarla Donovan
THE REPLACEMENT for a
failed $16,000 experimental
slipway in Moncks Bay has been
delayed – due to the extensive
“curing time” required.
A new slipway is needed
because one made of fibreglass
panels installed by the city
council last December – intended
to save money – turned
out to be too short, creating
an awkward
lip where the
panels were
connected to
the concrete.

concrete.
Now the
opening of the
sailing season is approaching in
late September, the Christchurch
Yacht Club is hoping the new
slipway will be in place ready for
their opening day.
It was originally planned
for the slipway to be installed
in June, but had taken longer
for the concrete to “cure” than
anticipated, Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
member Darrell Latham said.
Current planning is for the
large pre-cast concrete panels to
be lifted into place on September
11/12.
Dr Latham said the delay

respects because the project
planners had used the time to

slightly.
The new slipway will be 8m
wide and 4.7m long and installed
so that there is no sudden
steepness or drop off.

Pipeline repair
work begins
WORK TO replace a defective
section of flood-reducing pipeline
in the Heathcote Valley began on
Monday.
The stormwater pipeline was
completed in February last year
as part of the three-stage Matuku
Waterway diversion project and
diverted stormwater flows from
the Heathcote Valley Drain.
The water was diverted from
Morgan’s Valley to the lower
Matuku Waterway on Cooks
Lane, reducing the risk of flooding
to nearby properties.
A section of pipe installed
downstream of the inlet was
found to have defects and would
be replaced by Isaac Construction.
The pipeline diversion ran down
Birdle Path Rd, with the defects
found near the intersection with
Marsden St.
Work to replace the section of
pipe was slated to take around
three to four weeks depending on
the weather.
City council said work was
planned to keep Bridle Path Rd
open for the duration of work,
with a short period of time where
it would be reduced to one lane.
Work to reduce the flooding
risk on Flavell and Marsden
Sts began in 2016 with the first
pipeline built in stages starting at
Cooks Lane and working up.

ELEVEN ARTISTS will feature in an
exhibition of miniature art works inspired
by items from the Lyttelton Museum
collection.
Ka Awatea, The Time of Awakening
opens on September 25 in a miniature
pop-up gallery installed at the new museum
site on London St.
It is the first of three exhibitions at the
site between September and December,
designed to activate links between past
and present.
The artists in the first show will include
some familiar names, such as sculptors
Llew Summers, Tim Wraight and Andrew
Lyons, along with Piri Cowie, Robyn Webster
and Rachel Thornton.
Some of the works will be for sale.
Curators Sarah Amazinnia and Holly
Cunningham said the lineup of contemporary
artists was fantastic.
“The artwork proposals have unearthed
some interesting collection items – everything
from cigarette tins, moa bones,
jewellery boxes and ship figureheads,” said
Ms Cunningham.
She said it would be exciting to see the
installation evolve on the London St site
between now and the opening next month.
Last year, the city council agreed to gift
land at 33-35 London St to the Lyttelton
Historical Museum Society.
Architects Warren and Mahoney are
currently working on preliminary designs
for the multi-story building, which should
be completed in mid-October.
“We will then get it fully-costed before
moving into fundraising mode,” said
society development committee chairman
CONNECTIONS: A ship figurehead was
one of the items from the Lyttelton
Museum collection which inspired
artists in the pop-up gallery exhibition.
Peter Rough.
The society, a registered charity, currently
has $600,000 for the museum rebuild
but needs to raise about $5.4 million more
to construct the building and help with
operational costs.
The new museum is expected to open in
2020.

Easement
granted to
discharge
watewater
A LAND developer has been
granted an easement to discharge
wastewater as part of a 8092m 2
subdivision plan in Duvauchelle.
The developer of 21-23 Pawsons
Valley Rd has applied for
consent to subdivide the land
into smaller residential plots.
The developer will need to
discharge sewage and stormwater
into the existing city council
pipes that run alongside the eastern
boundary of the Akaroa golf
course which sits on reserve land.
Consent for the subdivision is
on hold, and the city council said
it will be up to the developer to
restart the process.
Because it is reserve land, a city
council resolution was required
to delegate the authority to the
Bank Peninsula Community
Board to grant the easement.
The golf course leasee has
given consent.
Another condition of the easement
means the developer must
pay $30,000 to the city council
“for the privilege of gaining an
encumbrance on the council’s
title.”
Ferrymead Rotary keeps kids healthy
Ferrymead
Rotary
member
Barbara
Crooks writes
about how
the charity
is helping
Bromley School children to
live healthy
Climbing: Bromley principal Scott Kinley giving a pupil some
climbing tips.
AS A teacher, Scott Kinley
knows the value of leading by
example.
So when some of his pupils
earned themselves a trip to
Christchurch’s climbing wall,
the Bromley School principal
needed little encouragement
to show how it’s done on the
school’s small-scale wall.
Eight children bound for the
YMCA climbing wall achieved
the highest reward in the
Healthy Heroes programme
at Bromley School. The programme,
the second sponsored
at the school by Ferrymead
Rotary, involved 50 pupils working
to achieve five challenges for
five days over nine weeks. They
received rewards at the end of
the third and sixth weeks. The
eight climbers-in-waiting met
all five challenges.
All the children in the group
learned about the healthy habits
taught, and can recite the challenges
and activities they did to
achieve the rewards. They talk
about how they not only did
their exercise at school, but also
managed all sorts of activity at
home.
Walking the dog was a
favourite, as was walking the
neighbours’ dogs which not only
meets the ‘exercise and being
active’ challenge but also the
challenge of helping others. The
children spoke about how they
enjoyed playing checkers and
other board games at home with
the family rather than watching
TV. They discovered that
stretching their minds could
be fun too. Getting enough
sleep was an easy challenge for
most of them. Eating well and
including three vegetables and
two fruits each day gives them
a chance to try vegetables they
hadn’t tried before.
The new Healthy Heroes website
provided the children with
new ideas on how to achieve the
challenges and has tips and links
to other sites.
Healthy Heroes, a Rotary New
Zealand programme, has been
running in some Christchurch
schools for almost 10 years. The
programme brings together
children, schools, families and
communities, with the aim
of building lasting habits to
prevent obesity and type-two
diabetes.

Tutors’ commitment brings
results for students
A genuine commitment to helping
students achieve in education and concern
for what happens to them are what brings
the results for children tutored at Kip
McGrath Ferrymead, says franchise owner
Helen Hudson.
“As they progress through the sessions we
see them blossom and grow in confidence
with their learning and that’s so rewarding,”
Helen says.
The other key factors that set Kip McGrath
apart and contribute to students’ success are
that all tutors have to be qualified teachers,
and that students have the same tutor every
time they attend, Helen says.
“This allows the tutors to build a rapport
with their students. They work on an
individualised programme within a small
group of three to five students.”
Communication with parents is another
important aspect, Helen points
out.
“We have to be meeting the
needs of the children as the
parents see it, as well as what
we see is needed.”
Kip McGrath Ferrymead
has six tutors offering students
from Year 1-13 tutoring in
maths and English – covering
a broad spectrum of spelling,
writing and reading, with
the tutors fully conversant
with NCEA requirements.
Chemistry, Physics and Biology
along with English and Maths
tutoring is available for Year
11, 12 and 13 students.
“With the senior students
we work alongside them, but
they are really the leader of
the lesson, which is tailormade
to their needs,” Helen
says.
There is also a focus on
children with learning
difficulties, such as dyslexia,
and for accelerant students,
who need extra challenges.
Each tutoring session lasts one
hour 20 minutes, with about six different
activities included each time. Sessions are
run outside school hours, either before or
after school, with most students attending
once a week.
“We also offer one-on-one tutoring for
adult students, who may need to improve
their English or maths skills for work they
want to apply for.”
There are several funding subsidies
Kip McGrath Ferrymead franchise owner Helen
Hudson helping a student
available for Kip McGrath tutoring.
Registered Ngai Tahu members receive
some funding, as do registered members
of the Rotorua-based Tauhara No. 2 Trust.
Fletchers also provide funding subsidies for
family members of their employees.
Free assessments are offered, and students
can enroll at any time of the year.

CANTERBURY Country will go
into their Craw Shield match against
Canterbury Metro on Sunday at
Kaiapoi on a high after beating
Southland Country 36-13.
After narrowly losing their opening
game to Marlborough in Blenheim a
fortnight ago, Canterbury Country
dominated at set-piece time to ease
past Southland Country in Darfield
on Saturday.
Canterbury Country coach Nigel
Smith said while he was happy with
their scrum and lineout dominance,
he admitted their defensive pattern
and skill execution on attack would
need to be better against Metro.
Canterbury Country have not
beaten Metro in 10 years,
“We dominated early in the scrums
and won seven lineouts on their
ball so that laid a good platform.
Not everyone has bought into the
defensive pattern just yet, but it was
better than week one,” he said.
“We identified the space well on
attack and ran hard at the line, but
our skill execution let us down. We
probably left 20 points out there,”
Smith praised Springston centre
Shaun Harrington.
“He ran the ball hard all day and
was defensively very committed. We
call his position ‘the edge’ and he
made sure there were no defensive

holes there,” Smith said.
“This weekend is our big game and
we’ll have to execute as best we can.”
Smith said, with the match
acting as a Canterbury B trial, he
hoped several players will put in big
performances to try and impress the
selectors.
“I’ve been really impressed with a
lot of our young talent and hopefully
that shows through on Saturday.”
Smith said players like Glenmark-
Cheviot blindside flanker Ben
Anderson and Waihora prop Jim
Cummings continued to impress.
“I’m not sure how Ben does it. He’ll
steal your lineout ball and he’s always
near the ball around the field – he’s
got a big work rate,” Smith said.
“Jim is a guy we picked
on a whim three years ago
and he’s got better every single game
for us. He solidifies our scrum.”

Tohu
‘To Think’
‘A mark, a sign.’
‘Anything serving as a reminder – token of rememberance”
Little River Gallery shows for the second time a collaborative exhibition by Robin Slow (painting), Brian Flintoff
(carving) and Bob Bickerton (soundscape). This year they follow on in the tradition of visually forwarding
histories and stories to be reflected on and become immersed in.
Robin Slow an artist whose work is also held in private collections, galleries and marae throughout the country
has used paint to create traditional forms used in conjunction with natural forms. The method of producing the
work has a traditional background but there has been an evolving of techniques and materials. This series of
works takes some traditional tohu, be it in the form of the composition, the patterns created or the creatures. It
explores the past and present to produce another tohu and that is the sign towards the future.
For many years, Brian Flintoff has created taonga puoro (musical instruments) for players and musicians
throughout the country. Not only do these create unique sounds but he has carved into them the stories and
histories that are woven into their function. His works are held in many major galleries throughout the world as
well as collections and marae here in Aotearoa.
From the painted images, carvings and reference points each has used in their works, Bob Bickerton created a
CD to enhance aspects visually but aurally as well to form a piece to be contemplated on and be enriched by.
Tohu (signs) surround us manifesting before and through our differing senses. Presented as a-tinana
(physical) and wha wairua (spiritual) appearances, patterns, actions, sounds of the surrounding environment
encompassing the seen and unseen, the ora and the mate.
