Whether it’s the work perks, camaraderie with fellow co-workers, or a passion for the business’ product or service, there are many components that play into a company’s “cool” factor. Where we live, we’re lucky to have a ton of places that meet all the criteria above, plus more, which was the inspiration behind this month’s feature. Starting on page 39, you can read about 17 places headquartered here that anyone would be lucky to work at. Some have been around for over a century, others started small and are now internationally known, and a few have dog-friendly digs or do impressive amounts of community service. I’m pretty positive there’s a company, and office culture, that’ll strike a chord with you. And if you happen to be job hunting, word on the street is some are currently hiring! Wherever you’re at in your professional or personal journey, let this issue be a reminder that it’s never too late to flip the script and try something new. Cheers!

Ticket to Dream
Foundation
Fostering Hope by TARA MENDANHA // photos by DANTE FONTANA
Their battle cry is “It’s for the kids,” which is
exactly what Ticket to Dream Foundation
is all about. In a country where almost half
a million children are in foster care, “[Ticket
to Dream] provides hope and opportunity
for foster children across the nation, so they
can just be kids,” says Gina Davis, executive
director of the foundation.
The Roseville-based charity collaborates with
companies, individuals, and foundations to effectively and
efficiently pool resources and distribute items that are in high demand (school supplies,
properly fitting clothes, and shoes) and memorable experiences (trips to the zoo, music
lessons, team sports, etc.) and fund vital support programs reaching 170,000 foster
kids in over 43 states. They also fund “aging out” programs that increase graduation
rates, provide housing, access to laptops, and teach employment/life skills aimed at
preparing foster youth for adulthood, ultimately reducing the rate of homelessness as
they leave foster care.
Juan Garcia, Collin Orn, Morgan Kestrloot, and Mauri Knowles
Given that over 400,000 children are in foster care, the overwhelming demand for
supplies and nurturing across the country can be staggering. To that end, the foundation
uses their network to identify common needs through flash polls and surveys that enable
them to see what programs their partners have, what resources they already have enough
of, what their unmet needs are, and what new needs are emerging—allowing for a quick
tailoring of programs and allocation of resources. By utilizing marketing, corporate
outreach, accounting, and
strategic planning, the
leadership team strives to find
solutions, ease burdens, and
create deserving childhoods.
Through careful and generous
planning, they’ve distributed
over 3.7 million essential items
and 34,000 tickets to events,
funded extracurricular activities
for 16,000 youth, helped increase
support for 2,000 youth aging out
of care, and provided over 1,500
laptops. There are many kids
that sleep in their new shoes
from sheer excitement and
countless stories of how foster
youth have blossomed after
joining a soccer team or taking
dance lessons. “We’ve received
tiny scrawled notes saying
they’ve had ‘the best day of my
life’ after a trip to the fair or sports game,”
recalls Davis.
With partners like Bonneville
Sacramento—whose radio stations Mix
96, KNCI 105.1, NOW 100.5, and KHTK
Sports along with four on-air ambassadors
raise awareness and funds for
foster youth in the region—and
generous companies like
BEARPAW, who host foster
youth events and provide
hundreds of shoes for kids,
they’re on the right track to
bringing some semblance of
a normal childhood into these
children’s lives.
The foundation also hosts
essential item drives with corporate
partner Mattress Firm collecting back-toschool
supplies, holiday gifts, clothing,
and shoes, along with co-hosting the
annual Ticket to Dream Golf Classic
(September 26 at Catta Verdera Country
Club) and various other events. Their
Holiday Toy Drive enables local residents
to drop toys off at any Mattress Firm
store, donate online, or host a drive at
churches or companies. “Whether it’s $10
or $10,0000, we know that when we all
work together we can create big change,”
asserts Davis.
