Welcome to our back to school edition! We hope you had a 

wonderful summer break and have been enjoying the recent 

sunshine, and are now feeling refreshed and ready to start 

another school year. 

We also want to give a warm welcome to all of our new 

readers who are just starting their first year of school. It’s such 

an exciting time and a whole new chapter in life, and we hope 

your first few weeks are everything you’d hoped they’d be. For 

all of our regular readers, we hope your new school year brings 

positive change and many more opportunities for fun with your 

families.

Community Open Day at 

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service 

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue 

Service open their doors to everyone 

in their local community at Community 

Station Open Days throughout the 

year at many of our fire and rescue 

stations. These hugely popular days 

feature a wide variety of events and 

activities and give you an opportunity 

to meet your local firefighters and see 

your local station. Their overall aim is 

to promote fire safety messages in an 

engaging way, by incorporating lots 

of fun activities for kids and adults

Parents in Sport Week 2018 

After another successful week of 

highlighting the important role parents 

play in sport in 2017, they’ve finalised 

the dates for this year’s event. 

This year’s Parents in Sport Week 

takes place 1 – 7 October 2018. For 

regular updates about news and 

activities for the week, sign up at

They’ll be asking sports to share 

their efforts to involve parents 

during the week with the hashtag

Parents and carers of children turning 

five from September 2019 can start 

to apply for a school place from 

1st June 2018, to the closing date 

of 15th January 2019. In addition, if

Getting back into 

good routines 

After all the lighter nights and 

relaxed summer holidays, it can 

take a bit of adjustment to get back 

into the routine of school life. But 

routines are important both for 

children and for families. They help 

children feel secure because they 

understand what is expected of 

them. They help reduce behaviour 

problems and ensure children are 

ready for learning. In short, they 

mean less stress for everyone! 

Here are some tips for establishing 

good routines: 

• Support children to take 

responsibility for getting 

themselves organised for school 

the night before; getting uniform, 

homework, P.E. kit and school bag 

ready. 

• Allow more time than you think 

you need in the morning - an extra 

20 minutes can make the world of 

difference for setting a calm tone 

for the day. 

• Don’t take over when your child’s 

getting dressed ‘to save time’. 

If you always do buttons etc for 

them, they will struggle to do 

these things independently and 

may feel upset when it’s expected 

of them at school 

• Breakfast is known as ‘the most 

important meal of the day’ for a 

reason! If children really don’t feel 

hungry first thing, take a cereal 

bar or some fruit to eat on the 

way to school. Breakfast gives 

children the energy they need to 

concentrate. 

• Avoid bombarding your child with 

lots of questions when they get 

back from school, as they’re likely 

be in need of some down time. 

Make time to listen when they’re 

ready – dinner times are a great 

opportunity to talk through the 

highs and lows of the day. 

• Primary school children should 

be getting 10 – 11 hours’ sleep a 

night, so need to be getting ready 

for bed at a reasonable time. 

Remember, too much screen time 

late in the day leads to poor sleep 

patterns.

Fullhurst Community College
