Primary Times Nottinghamshire NEWS The Peep Learning Together Programme Praised for Supporting Parents An early intervention programme has been developed by the charity Peeple to show parents how to do more activities at home that help their children’s development. The sessions include singing, storytime, book-sharing, play activities, and time to talk about an aspect of children’s learning and development. The sessions help parents make the most of day-to-day learning opportunities, and provide support in talking about a range of ideas, thoughts and feelings. Nottingham’s Hoodwinked Trail Proves Huge Success This summer Nottingham hosted aHoodwinked Wild in Art sculpture trail that proved incredibly popular with families. Placed around the city were 33 five-foot tall fibre glass robins by artists including Julie Vernon, and 50 beautiful BookBenches created by local primary schools through the Robin’s Tales education programme. The benches were placed in the intu Victoria Centre, intu Broadmarsh, and the Central Library, as well as in 18 neighbourhood libraries and leisure centres, and were decorated in avariety of creative designs. The trail was brought to Nottingham after two and a half years of hard work by Nottingham City Council, Wild In Art, and Nottinghamshire Hospice. Alex Norris, MP for Nottingham North, said: ‘the Peep programme provides vital skills to ensure the home environment can become a place where children are stimulated and engaged with the world around them. I’m pleased that Nottingham City Council is giving parents and carers this great start.’ Plans to Create Britain’s Best Children’s Library in Nottingham Nottingham City Council announced an exciting new proposal to develop a modern Central Library in the revamped Broadmarsh area. The plans include creating the best children’s library in Britain, taking into consideration local children’s ideas on what their ideal library would be. The children’s library would both be to further local children’s access to books and learning, but also would create a new place for parents to spend time with their children as they explore stories, activities, and ideas together. The library would also have quiet spaces for meeting and studying, IT equipment, free internet access, local studies and archives. Councillor Collins, leader of Nottingham City Council, said: ‘Nottingham is a UNESCO City of Hospice, said: ‘it’s great to see the trail getting such a positive reaction from members of the public. We have taken some groups of patients out on the trail to see the ‘Hands of Hope’ robin they painted in situ in King Street and the other robins. It’s awonderful familyfriendly activity to do during the summer holidays.’ Literature, and we want to provide a bright new Central Library. Children’s literacy is a big priority for us, and we are asking children to send us their designs for their dream library. I’m sure we’re going to get lots of creative ideas.’ Nottingham City Councillor Walks 267 Miles in 10 Days for Children’s Reading Charity Starting on Friday 24th August, Councillor Jon Collins, the Leader of Nottingham City Council, is to walk the 267- mile Pennine Way trek for charity in just 10 days. This trek usually would take at least three weeks to complete, so in such ashort time span this equates to Councillor Collins walking more than a marathon each day. By completing this challenge Councillor Collins aims to raise funds for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library: abook-gifting scheme which provides afree book every month to children from birth to age five. The scheme currently runs in nine of the city’s 20 wards, but with a fundraising target of £2,670 the councillor hopes to begin extending the scheme to the remaining 11 wards. Councillor Collins said: ‘getting children reading at an early age is important.
