COYOTES IN COPPERFIELD
Coyotes have been sighted in many of the subdivisions in the Copperfield
area at night and before dawn. Please protect your pets. They should not
be left unattended after dark, even in their own enclosed yard as coyotes
can jump or scale a 6-7 ft fence.
MESSAGE FROM THE CY-FAIR
VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT:
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is requesting homeowner
assistance in addressing the low hanging trees within the community.
These low hanging branches or limbs are hampering responses to calls
for assistance. The branches and limbs are damaging equipment and
Homeowner’s trees. Routes to locations have to be altered. Some locations
are unable to have an alternate route, leaving no recourse but to park the
apparatus and walk to the location.
Several pieces of equipment are 13 feet tall and CFVFD is requesting that
homeowners trim the trees to have a 14 feet umbrella over the street.
The Department members have been instructed not to damage their
apparatus or the Homeowner’s trees by driving down streets that do not
have appropriate passage. The fire department does not wish to have
a citizen with a fire or medical emergency that delays them receiving
attention due to having to locate an alternate route or being forced to walk
to the emergency location. If damage is caused by a homeowner’s tree,
the homeowner will be held responsible for the repair.
(CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
GARAGE SALE!!!!! GARAGE SALE!!!!! IMPORTANT DATE TO REMEMBER
Date: Saturday, October 20 th
Time: 7 AM-5 PM
Summer is here and warm temperatures will take a toil on our yards, grass
and gardens. Water deeply at least 3 times a week to keep them green
and flourishing. Water early in the morning or at night to conserve on
water. Evaporation only occurs when you water during the day when the
temperatures are high. It can also cause your gardens to burn with the
moisture and heat.
Neighbors, please be considerate of others when you have a “BACKYARD
PARTY!” The loud noise level will not be tolerated and is very inconsiderate
of your neighbors. This includes loud music in the garage or out in your
patio. We have been experiencing such behavior even late at night. The
Harris County Sheriff Department can be contacted if you are experiencing
this for disturbance of the peace. Call 713-221-6000 (prompt 6).
2018 season.
POOL GATES: DO NOT open the gate to people who do not have a key
or live in our community unless they are your guests! Opening the gate
to non-members or people without pool keys can result in deactivation
of your pool card and not being allowed in pool area. There is a limit of
guests per homeowner and NO parties are allowed of any kind. Our 24/7
pool cameras will pick up any illegal activity at all times.
Yard of the Month
Our neighbors at 7422 Pacific Ridge Ct have been working hard keeping their yard looking
great regardless how the heat has been taking a toil to our gardens. It takes time and effort
keeping up with the yard and going the extra mile makes our neighborhood looking great!
Drive throughs are done the 1 st week of the month and selected Yard of the Month will
be mailed a gift certificate in appreciation of your efforts.
GREEN BELT AND PARK:
GREENBELT AND PARK AREA TRASH: Did you know that there are trash
bins in these areas for your convenience? Please be considerate and help
keep these areas free from trash.
We are still receiving complaints about trash in these areas as well as
people not picking up their dogs litter. Please be considerate of others
using this area for walking and jogging and dispose of all trash! There are
trash bins along the sidewalk for your use and 2 Doggie Stations have been
installed on the walkway by the trashcans. USE THEM!
ILLEGAL PARKING: No parking in the Pool/Park area is allowed after 9 PM.
We will begin towing any vehicle seen after hours at the owners’ expense. It
does not matter if you are a homeowner or a guest visiting the homeowner.
It is illegal and considered trespassing. If you notice a suspicious car or
against deed restrictions to drive them on the green belt. So, load them on
a small trailer and drive your vehicle to the golf coarse.
Call 713-221-6000 #6.
CRIMES IN PROGRESS CALL 911
NON-EMERGENCY: 713-221-6000 and prompt 6.
neighborhood safe; therefore, it is up to you to report any strange activity
in your neighborhood!
GET INVOLVED! If you want to be aware of what is happening in your
neighborhood as far as crime, the Sheriff’s department posts news or important
information in the new website created for the various neighborhoods!
this violation throughout the neighborhood and repeated violators
can be ticketed! Illegal parking in the streets are being monitored
in Copperfieldbuzzclub.Nextdoor.com. Sgt. Adam Lightfoot puts out
important information on various laws and issues.
MILDEW: Mildew on the sides of homes have been cited, as well as
painting needed on some homes. We would like to think you care
and are proud about your neighborhood. Get a copy of the deed
restrictions if you do not have one by going into the Copperfield
website, www.copperfield.org and tag on Copperfield Place Village.
FENCING: Check your fencing and repair if boards are loose or
missing! Animals can either come in or out of your yard if boards are
missing on to the street or green belt.
GARBAGE CANS MUST BE STORED OUT OF SIGHT! Garbage pick
up is scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays. In the evening, please
remove trashcans from the street after pickup! Put trash out the
questions as to why your trash is not being picked up, contact Blanca
@ SCS.
No boats, trailers, commercial trucks or inoperable vehicles are
allowed in driveways or street and are against deed restriction
violations! You will be charged a fee if you have been cited before
emergency vehicles access ability at times and therefore considered
a serious violation.
(CPV) DO NOT DISREGARD
DEED RESTRICTION LETTERS!
Important that you read and act accordingly. If you think you received
this in error, please contact SCS immediately. The deed restriction
Easton Commons Village
(EC) YARD OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to our Yard of the Month winner! The August recipient was
C. Tompkins from 14711 Forest Trails. Thanks to all of the Easton Commons
owners who do so much to keep up the appearance of their property!
(EC) EGRETS AND HERONS HAVE COME TO EASTON COMMONS
As I’m sure many of you are already aware, Easton Commons has become a
nesting area for egrets and herons. At this point in the season, the owners of
affected properties are very limited in what they can do to be rid of this problem,
as egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by international
treaty and it’s illegal for residents to harass or harm the birds once they lay eggs.
However, because the condition of nesting areas creates extremely unattractive
and unsanitary conditions that can have a negative impact on property values,
we want all of the community to be aware of the issue so that the birds’ return
can be prevented in the spring of 2019.
Any home with mature trees is a potential nesting site for these birds but they
especially like oak trees with touching canopies. Prevention is crucial - when the
birds first arrive in spring, they are somewhat nervous and more easily scared
away. The absolute critical time period is between when the first bird is spotted
in the area until the first egg is laid in a nest. This is the crunch time when you
have the only opportunity to scare the birds away and to disrupt the problem.
Putting visual deterrents in trees is recommended before nest building begins.
You can also scare off birds with noisemakers, water sprayers and other nonlethal
devices. Neighbors are advised to check their trees daily and remove the
start of any nest. Once birds begin sitting on the nest, eggs are probably present
and birds cannot be harassed.
Watch for Signs - Night herons are the first to migrate in mid-February. While not
usually a nuisance, the presence of night herons lets other migrating birds know
they’ve found a good place to nest. It is important for the entire neighborhood
to act together. Our hope is migrating birds eventually make their rookery in
trees away from residential homes.
Below is a list of possible tools and tactics you can use to deter migratory
birds from nesting on your property. Experts say a variety of deterrents
works best. Just remember - do not harm birds or eggs.
TRIM YOUR TREES - Remove dead wood. Thin tree canopy to allow
sunlight between limbs and other trees. Experts say this is the most
effective step you can take.
VISUAL DETERRENTS - Hang aluminum pie plates, Mylar balloons, beach
balls with shiny streamers or other moving objects in large trees before
mid-Feb.
NOISEMAKERS - Pump-style air horns, whistles, clappers and even children’s
toys are effective. Make as much noise as possible aimed at the bird.
BRIGHT LIGHTS - High-intensity flashlights, strobe lights, flashing holiday
lights can be effective.
WATER SPRAYERS - Power sprayers and pump-style toy water shooters
can help. Homemade PVC pipe sprayers can help reach tall tree limbs.
POOL POLES - Telescoping pool safety poles can be used to reach and
remove early nesting material.
(EC) MOSQUITO CONTROL
Although the Easton Commons HOA has mosquito control come through
regularly during the summer, it is not enough to get rid of them completely.
The summer months can be uncomfortable, due to all of the biting insects.
One of the best ways to prevent mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding
grounds. Controlling mosquitoes also minimizes the risk of mosquitoborne
diseases, including St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile Virus
encephalitis. Homeowners need to scan their property and dispose of or
remedy anything causing standing water. The eggs that mosquitoes lay
in rainwater hatch in as little as two days. Tip over buckets or containers,
flowerpots with reservoirs, toys, boats, wheelbarrows, birdbaths and
wading pools. Clean clogged roof gutters; fill in low areas of the yard that
collects water, dispose of leaf piles and chlorinate pools. Treat water in
fountains or water gardens if the water does not flow on a regular basis.
(EC) CURB REPAIR
Curbs are repaired through Harris County Precinct 4. To request a work order,
visit their website - www.hcp4.net/cad/. You also may call 281-353-8424
or fax a report to 281-893-5589. The homeowner’s must be involved with
the request. Only the straight part of the curb in front of the home will be
repaired. The end of the driveway and the inlet (curved smaller area) to the
driveway is the homeowner’s responsibility. Precinct 4 has been remarkably
responsive to requests, often making repairs in only two to three days.
(EC) TRASH PICK UP SERVICE
All Residents must have an account with WCA for trash pickup. If you do
not have an account with WCA, your trash will no longer be picked up.
Trash pickup days are Tuesdays for trash and Fridays for trash and
recycling. Have waste ready at the curb for collection no later than 7 AM.
Residents may purchase a trash receptacle from any hardware store.
Recycling boxes may be requested from WCA, additional boxes may be
purchased from them as well. WCA Phone# 281-766-1914.
WCA observed Holidays are New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence
Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Trash pickup will
resume on the following trash collection day.
In order to keep the neighborhood appealing to potential buyers, increase
curb appeal and deter vandalism we ask that trash be placed at the curb
no earlier than the evening before scheduled pick up and trash cans be
removed the same day. If you have lawn service, please request the lawn
clippings to be hauled away or have them placed in a location that cannot
be seen from the street.
(MG) FALL GARAGE SALE MIDDLEGATE VILLAGE
Turn your treasures into cash. Mark your calendar for Saturday, October
13, 2018 for the fall community garage sale. Community in the sense that
it’s the HOA designated day this fall for Middlegate residents to hold a
garage sale. Set up on your property. No need to haul your belongings to
a remote site. Event opens at 7 AM and closes at 3 PM on garage sale day.
(MG) NEIGHBORHOOD EVENT
Join residents in the gazebo park for National Night Out on Tuesday,
October 2, 2018. Bring a snack or dessert to share. Visit with other
neighbors. Come and go as you please between 6:30 and 8:30 PM. Learn
about Middlegate’s website SCS Go; are you registered? Let’s make this a
friendly and informative meet and greet.
(MG) NEWSLETTER ARCHIVES
convenience to all newsletter readers.
(MG) WHAT IS SCS GO?
SCS GO is the official website of Middlegate Village. The site is accessible
to receive and share important information with the Middlegate HOA
Board, SCS Management Company and Middlegate neighbors.
middlegatevillagehouston.nabrnetwork.com/register.php
(MG) POOL TRESPASSING NOTICE
When pool is closed, it is not open. Period.
Entering within the fenced area of the pool after pool is closed is
trespassing. The Sheriff’s Department will be contacted when a trespasser
is seen.
These facilities are provided for and maintained by Middlegate
maintenance fees. Keeping the property secure after hours is a priority
with your HOA.
(MG) BIRD COMMITTEE FALL 2018
Middlegate parks have seen another successful year. Migratory birds did
not form rookeries in either park this season. Herons and egrets are still
active in the area, as they have ample food sources and plenty of trees to
roost in.
To continue to discourage birds from nesting in trees, we all need to keep
trees trimmed. HOA needs to reassess park trees. Homeowners need to
tend to the trees on their properties. The migratory birds form colonies
in densely packed trees and in trees of plentiful branches. The first heron
makes a visit to Middlegate in February, to scout out the real estate.
Activity picks up in March and April, when more birds stop by to look for
places to nest and raise young.
(MG) USING YOUR GARDEN AND
YARD TO ADDED ADVANTAGE
What are some of your biggest assets in deterring intruders? The answer…
your garden and yard. Do you have dense plantings in your yard? As HGTV
reports, one of the best defenses against burglars “can be the eyes and
ears of your neighbors. If you have a jungle like yard, your neighbors can’t
keep an eye on your front door when you’re not home.” HGTV also reports
that you want to be able to see out of your own windows and too much
vegetation around them can give burglars a place to hide. Fortunately,
moderation is key! HGTV recommends not getting rid of plants, just
thinning them out.
As House Beautiful reports, you shouldn’t let any of your plants - even
ones that you specifically want to deter burglars - get too big. “An
overgrown garden gives thieves shelter and plenty of places to hide,” the
publication notes. “Leave points of entry to the house visible to the street
and illuminate them with a motion-sensor light if possible.”
(MG) TWO MIDDLEGATE PARKS
Middlegate Village maintains two parks for residents’ use. The pool park is
located at the intersection of Sterling Lake Drive and Silent Cedars Drive.
The pool facility is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The gazebo park
is bordered by Plum Lake Drive, Pinyon Creek Drive and Lakedale Drive.
Both parks are open during daylight hours and are equipped with picnic
tables, grills, playground equipment and volleyball nets.
(MG) POOL AND PARK NEWS
The Pool and Park committee has identified areas of concern regarding
both parks over the last 6 weeks and steps have been taken to deal with
issues that should improve the parks appearance and functions.
1. The marquee in the gazebo park is under contract to be fixed and
information regarding events in Middlegate will be posted.
2. The storm drain cover that was damaged in the gazebo park has been
replaced with a new grate.
3. Both playground parks have been placed in the bidding process to be
power washed.
4. There is a sinkhole in the pool park that is currently fenced off with
orange fencing. Since it is now established that this area belongs to
Middlegate and not the county, the repair is now in the bidding process.
Please do not attempt to remove the fencing.
5. The standing water that has accumulated in the pool parks after the
sprinklers went through their cycles is now gone. The sprinklers were
turned off to allow the ground to dry out. The Board is determining what
steps to take regarding the system.
6. Landscaping issues involving the park signs have been discussed and
plans are now in final stages to make changes around those signs for the
spring.
7. Landscaping around the gazebo and in the pool parks will be altered
to promote an addition of self seeding colorful flowers/colorful ground
covers.
8. Areas around all the trees in both park will no longer be edged/mulched
but allowed to grow naturally to the tree trunks.
9. A bent playground bar in the gazebo park will be replaced.
10. The volleyball net in the gazebo park will not be replaced at this time.
The committee will continue to monitor the parks for new items that need
the HOA/SCS attention.
If you are interested in joining the committee, please join SCSgo.
(SC) TRASH & RECYCLING PICKUP
Southcreek trash pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has
backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back
of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb. Big items
such as yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at the curb.
Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings, cannot
be on the curb until 6 PM the night before pickup and your trashcans
must be picked up from the curb by 6 PM, the day of pickup. So… you
cannot have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6
PM and everything must be removed from the curb by 6 PM on Tuesdays
and Fridays. This includes any bags that contain lawn clippings. If you
have a lawn service, have them place the bags behind your fence and
not leave the clippings on the curb.
Our recycling day is Tuesday. Please have your recycling bin at the curb by
7 AM on Tuesdays. Please pick up your recycling by 6 PM on Tuesdays to
comply with our deed restrictions.
(SD) TRASH PICK UP SERVICE
Trash pickup days are Tuesdays and Fridays and recycling is collected
on Tuesday. Have waste ready at the curb for collection no later than 7
AM. Residents may purchase a trash receptacle from any hardware store.
Recycling bins may be requested from WCA; additional boxes may be
purchased from them as well. WCA Phone 281-766-1914.
WCA observed Holidays are New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence
Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Trash pickup will
resume on the following trash collection day.
All Residents must have an account with WCA for trash pickup. If you do
not have an account with WCA, your trash will not be picked up.
In order to keep the neighborhood
appealing to potential buyers,
increase curb appeal and deter
vandalism we ask that trash be
placed at the curb no earlier than
the evening before scheduled pick
up and trash cans and recycling
is unable to accommodate the
request, you can ask that they
maintain the yard on a Monday or
Thursday so that the clippings are
only on the curb for one afternoon.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT (NNO)
National Night Out (NNO) will take place this year on Tuesday, October
2 nd . Each year residents of Westcreek volunteer to host street gatherings
with the purpose of neighbors meeting neighbors so as to strengthen
neighborhood watches and to deter crime. Stressed at every event is
the theme “If you see something, say something” and encouraging
everyone to report suspicious behavior by keying into cell phones the
Sheriff Dept.’s nonemergency number 713-221-6000 (#6). The WCWC is
encouraging new neighbors to join long time residents this specific night
for this great opportunity to exchange emails and phone numbers in the
event of a future emergency. Several residents have already contacted
chairperson Larry Berger at lberger@comcast.net to volunteer to host a
street gathering. If you are interested in being the “volunteer neighbor”
who will gather your neighbors outside at a specific location on your street
on October 2 nd , please contact Larry Berger for information and details.
Your efforts and support of NNO is truly appreciated.
SAFETY TIPS FROM HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE (HCSO)
HCSO promotes the following safety tips: With sales tax free weekend
approaching, remove the opportunity by not leaving purchases in the
vehicle in plain sight and by keeping the windows and doors of the vehicle
locked at all times; HCSO District 4 substation located at 16715 Clay Road
will have a designated officer from 6-8 PM Tuesday-Thursday to provide
a safe meeting place for person-to –person sales transactions especially
those involving the internet. The officer is there for safety purposes only
and will not be involved in negotiations or sales transactions. On the
internet please join Nextdoor Neighbor and specify your neighborhood.
HCSO sends out important messages and tips concerning the community.
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
Westcreek would like a captain for every block; so if you would like more
information about how to serve in this position, please contact Larry Berger.
However, all neighbors are encouraged to attend the monthly Westcreek
Crime Watch meeting, which involves less than an hour a month.
Again please park vehicles in garages or in driveways. Vehicles parked in
the street can prevent large emergency vehicles and school buses from
reaching their destinations. The overall neighborhood appearance is
more attractive without blocked and congested streets. Also street parked
vehicles are often targeted for theft as well as vandalized by criminal
mischief acts such as being egged. More importantly, these vehicles are
often backed into by a neighbor or side swiped by another passing vehicle.
All these incidents can be avoided by simply not parking on the street.
Most importantly, let’s go one month without valuables being stolen from
an unlocked vehicle. Simply don’t leave anything of value in the vehicle
and then lock the windows and doors.
WESTCREEK LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
Meetings - 2 nd Monday of every month at 6:30 PM
Location - Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room
The Westcreek Landscape Committee meets on the 2 nd Monday
every month. If you are interested in helping make a difference in our
neighborhood and would like to become part of the group, we welcome
and encourage your attendance and hope to see you there - there is
always room for you!
SOD WEB WORMS
If you are seeing multiple small, grey moths flitting about
your yard, especially during the early evening hours, you likely
have sod webworms. You likely have areas that show signs of
distress and yellowing of your grass due to the larvae stages of
these moths feeding on your lawn as they develop into adults.
Areas that provide the greatest opportunity for infestation are
hard to water areas or areas that receive infrequent irrigation.
To stop the infestation in your lawn from thriving or continuing
to plague your yard, you will need to treat your lawn areas with
either a biological or chemical agent. Apply an insecticide that
contains synthetic pyrethroids either during the late afternoon
or early evening hours, when temperatures begin to cool and
the larvae stage is most active. Granular products include
Triazicideor Talstar (PL or EZ). Liquid products include Sevin,
Spectracide or Excite. A liquid spray product works quicker, but
a granular product allows for deeper penetration over time to
occur. Be sure to water your lawn areas thoroughly 2-3 days
before applying any treatment as this helps bring the larvae to
the surface, closer to the chemical being applied. These same
products can also be used for grub worm infestations, which
can be especially damaging. Be sure to apply the treatment 3 times over a 21 day
period (once every 7 days) to kill all developmental levels of this pest. Additional
information can be obtained at the following sites:
SEPTEMBER GARDENING TIPS
FLOWERS
• Get ready for October now - lay Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush seed down in
late September or early October so you will achieve blooms in the spring. Seedlings
need to take root and establish a root base in the fall and getting the seeds to
germinate is necessary to achieve this. Getting seed into the ground before the soil
temperatures fall below 70 degrees is imperative.
• Angelonia and various wildflowers will continue to do well through the end of the
year if cared for properly. Water deeply, but not excessively.
• Irritated that your Vincas or New Guinea Impatiens appeared to rot and not thrive
this summer? Fungus likely took hold as with the hot weather you were keeping
them adequately watered to prevent shriveling. Take care to not over-water or water
these flowers in the evening. Apply adequate mulch around the base of the flowers
and prevent water from splashing onto the leaves as fungus spores from the soil can
be lifted up and infect the leafy areas.
• Do not place any removed plants that displayed fungus/rot into a compost pile
as the fungus will thrive and be carried into the soil once you apply the decaying
material from the compost pile in the future.
MULCH ALONG FENCES
Please take care to not have mulch piled up against your cedar fence above the
lower horizontal rot board. Do not allow the mulch to sit up against the vertical
pickets as this causes premature rotting. As many of you know a survey was sent
out recently regarding fence replacement. Let’s all do our part in making our cedar
fencing last as long as possible! Proper irrigation adjustments that would prevent
water soaking your fence every time your sprinklers come on is a step in the right
direction. Remember, water promotes wood rot.
Remember that school is back in session now. Please set irrigation timers so that
they do not come on during times children are headed to or from the bus stop areas.
Drive carefully and slow down!
CFISD BRINGS SAFETY AND SECURITY TO
FOREFRONT WITH 2018-2019 ACTION PLAN
Following a summer of planning, the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD safety and
security committee unveiled its 2018-2019 Safety and Security Action
Plan at the Board of Trustees committee-of-the-whole meeting on Aug. 9 th .
Comprised of representatives of the CFISD leadership team, the committee
hosted a series of meetings throughout June and July to review current
security initiatives that are already in place as well as explore what
additional layers could be implemented for the district this year. Featuring
roundtable discussions with experts as well as input from all campus
principals and the Community Leadership Committee, the meetings
resulted in an action plan focused on prevention of, identification and
intervention of and response to potential security threats during a time
when the nationwide focus is on school safety.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s School and Firearm Safety Action Plan, released
on May 30 th , was used by the committee as a baseline to review school
safety and implement recommended strategies.
The following summary of the safety and security committee’s action plan
can be found in more detail on the district website under the “Safety for
All” block:
possibility of identifying exit-only doors and removing door handles on
certain doors. Food deliveries for students will be prohibited by fast food
delivery drivers.
IDENTIFICATION AND INTERVENTION
Campuses will continue to advertise the Cy-Fair Tipline for students, an
internal and anonymous reporting system. A visible button will be added
to each campus website for easy sharing with the CFPD and campus
administration. The CFPD will continue to work with the Houston Regional
Intelligence Service Center to identify potential threats on social media.
Two mental health intervention teams, each consisting of two licensed
professional counselors, a licensed specialist in school psychology and
a mental health school resource officer, have been developed to assist
students, administration and parents in developing a positive and
proactive plan for mental health. All teachers, counselors, district and
campus administrators, transportation and community programs staff
will undergo mental health assessment training prior to the start of the
school year. All elementary and secondary counselors will be trained on
completing threat assessment interviews.
RESPONSE
CFISD’s school safety and security committee will meet three times per
year and provide updates and reports to the Board of Trustees twice a
year. All campuses will continue to implement and practice emergency
operations plans, based on a template provided by the Texas School
Safety Center. All campus and district administrators will be trained in the
Standard Response Protocol and Standard Reunification Method prior to
the start of the school year.
All staff members will receive active shooter training prior to the start of the
school year, while all CFPD officers are required to complete active shooter
trainings such as ALERRT and ERASE as well as crisis intervention training.
A mental health crisis response team consisting of licensed behavior health
professionals has been formed to respond during critical incidents.
Send your kids to school with a nutritious
breakfast and they might come home with
better test scores and fewer behavioral
problems. There’s no doubt about it -
breakfast is a big deal. Decades of research
have shown that kids who make this meal a
habit have better diets, healthier bodies,
higher test scores, lighter moods and more
mental stamina. No matter how hectic your
mornings are, it’s worth taking the time to
make sure your kids get good food before
school starts.
Does breakfast really make a difference?
Food fuels the body with glucose, the main
energy source for the mind and muscles. This
refueling is especially important in the
morning because the body hasn’t had any
food since the night before. Children’s daily
nutrient intake also tends to be higher when
they eat breakfast, according to the American
Dietetic Association (ADA). Whole-grain cereal
with milk and a glass of citrus juice, for
example, delivers lots of vitamin C,
calcium, thiamin, riboflavin, fiber, iron
and folate.
Children who eat breakfast are also
more likely to have lower blood
cholesterol levels and are less likely to
gain weight, miss school or visit the
school nurse than children who don’t
have a morning meal.
Make a breakfast plan
Mornings can often be the busiest
part of the day. To help make sure
breakfast stays on your family’s
schedule no matter how pressed for
time you are, try these tips from the
ADA and the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP).
• Set your table the night before. Save
yourself a few precious minutes in the
morning by setting out dishes, cereal,
bagels, bread, fruit or instant breakfast
mix before you go to bed.
• Use last night’s leftovers. Don’t fret if
it’s not traditional breakfast food. A
slice of pizza or macaroni and cheese
warmed up in the microwave can still
provide needed nutrients.
• Keep your cupboards and fridge stocked
with quick, healthy breakfast foods, such
as granola bars, bagels, bananas, yogurt,
cottage cheese, dried fruit, instant
oatmeal, whole-wheat toaster waffles and
fruit or vegetable juice.
• Be flexible. If your child can’t or won’t eat
first thing in the morning, offer fruit juice
at home and pack a breakfast to go.
English muffins or bagels with peanut
butter, a low-fat cheese sandwich or
whole-wheat banana nut bread will travel
well. You can also ask if your child can
have breakfast at school-many school
cafeterias offer morning meals.
The best breakfasts include foods with
carbohydrates, proteins and fats. This type
of meal can satisfy hunger and maintain
blood sugar levels for hours. Sugary foods
cause a quick rise in blood sugar and
energy that fizzles out in about one hour.
The bottom line on breakfast
A morning meal gives kids an edge on
hunger, energy and brainpower. Even if it
means setting alarm clocks 20 minutes
early, find a way to make breakfast a
regular at your house-your kids aren’t
ready for school without it.
Copperfield Community Newsletter | September 2018 41
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may
signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the
first week of September.
• Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler
temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up.
- Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them
with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves.
- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug.
• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make
it to Spring.
• St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height.
You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter.
• Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You
need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch,
Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’
digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed
at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt.
• When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine
grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.
• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardenedoff
before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are
dormant.
• Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter
broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.
APPLE DUMPLING
You could make this on National Apple Dumpling Day September 17 th !
INGREDIENTS:
1 pastry for double-crust pie
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 cups water
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Butter a 9x13 inch pan.
On a lightly floured surface, roll pastry into a large rectangle, about 24 by 16 inches. Cut
into 6 square pieces. Place an apple on each pastry square with the cored opening facing
upward. Cut butter into 8 pieces. Place 1 piece of butter in the opening of each apple; reserve
remaining butter for sauce. Divide brown sugar between apples, poking some inside each
cored opening and the rest around the base of each apple. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg
over the apples.
With slightly wet fingertips, bring one corner of pastry square up to the top of the apple, then
bring the opposite corner to the top and press together. Bring up the two remaining corners
and seal. Slightly pinch the dough at the sides to completely seal in the apple. Repeat with
the remaining apples. Place in prepared baking dish.
In a saucepan, combine water, white sugar, vanilla extract and reserved butter. Place over
medium heat and bring to a boil in a large saucepan. Boil for 5 minutes or until sugar is
dissolved. Carefully pour over dumplings.
Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes. Place each apple dumpling in a dessert bowl
and spoon some sauce over the top.
