The Wall of Honor
Hope’s Wall of Honor is an everlasting tribute to our Veterans. It was designed and
donated to Hope by Brother Sid Taylor, a US Marine, Vietnam combat veteran and
beloved member of Hope. It is a memorial tribute to commemorate the sacrifices our
veterans have made for our country. We are grateful to Sid and his family for blessing
us all with the beautiful Wall of Honor.
New names are added to the Wall of Honor every Veteran’s Day. If you, a loved one, or
a friend served in the armed forces and would like to be added to the Wall, please
complete the Wall of Honor form located in the Literature Rack and place it in the Wall of
Honor mailbox outside the Sanctuary. God bless you.

Hope United Methodist Church Cancer Support Ministry
September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month
Early Detection Can Improve Your Quality of Life
Cancer is the second leading cause of death for African Americans.
Join us Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the library as we support those
persons (including caregivers) going through the cancer experience.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Robert Chapman, Retired Oncologist, Henry Ford Hospital
What is Pediatric Cancer? It is cancer in a child in which the body’s cells grow
abnormally. The cause of childhood cancer is often unknown. Childhood cancer is rare
however, it is still the leading cause of death by disease in children. Overall, 80% of
childhood cancer cases can be successfully treated.
Symptoms: There is no single set of symptoms instead, it depends on the type of
cancer and where the cancer is found. Some symptoms can mimic common illnesses
such as the flu, a cold or migraine headache.
What can you do to help your child? Make sure you take your child to get regular check
-ups. Once diagnosed, seek help from a medical center that specializes in pediatric
oncology.
Types of childhood cancer: Childhood cancers are most likely those of the white blood
cells (leukemia), brain, bone and the lymphatic system (lymphoma)
Risk Factors: Non-inherited gene mutation or changes in the genes of growing cells. In
rare cases exposure to certain viruses, chemicals, high birth weight or radiation can play
a role.
There is additional research being done in this area and new drugs are being approved
by the FDA. Talk with your doctor, search online clinical trial databases or visit
ASCO’s CancerProgress.net website.
Tests and Diagnosis: See your doctor; it depends on the type of pediatric cancer.

Missions' Food Pantry Stock Up
Hope, we need your help to stock our pantry to feed our neighbors in
need for the upcoming year. Your donations can be placed in the
Missions food barrels near the kitchen and Room 24 anytime during
the week.
The following items are of special need:
Cereal, canned tuna and salmon, canned fruits and
vegetables, canned soups, rice, beans,
mashed potatoes, boxed macaroni and cheese, pancake
mix, syrup, canned pasta meals, canned chili, peanut butter,
jelly and juice.
Last year Hope blessed approximately 400 families with a food
basket!

All CD and DVD videos of sermons or any other type of event recordings will now be
available for purchase at the Welcome Center.
CDs are $5.00 and DVDs are $10.00.
Sermons on CDs and DVDs will continue to be available
by filling out the Sermon Order Request Form below.
Sermon orders will be ready for pick up at the Welcome Center
seven (7) days after receipt of the order form.
The Welcome Center is open every Sunday immediately following
the 7:30am and 10:30am Worship Services.
