Ocoee High School Student Dreams of the Olympics by Karen Nimetz Shop Local September Sidewalk Sale in Historic Downtown Winter Garden Thursday, September 27 – Saturday, September 29, 2018 11 am – 5 pm When 15-year-old Maia Slowinski was just 8 years old, she attended a festival in Winter Garden with her father, Jay Slowinski. While there, they came upon a booth for the Winter Garden Fencing Academy, where academy representatives were handing out vouchers for a trial lesson. Maia, who had played soccer up to that point, was intrigued and decided to give fencing a try. She was instantly hooked. Though the art of fencing dates back to the 12th century, the sport of fencing began in the late 1800s. Today, fencing is a challenging sport that requires an agile body and mind. Maia fell in love with the sport almost immediately and was not deterred by the physical and mental challenges it presented or by the losses she faced. “It was almost a full two years before Maia began winning any fencing tournaments,” said Suzi Katz, Maia’s mother. “During that time, she was never down on herself. Maia has always demonstrated great sportsmanship, and over time, her love of fencing grew stronger. The losses only made her more driven to win.” Fifteen-year-old Maia Slowinski of Southwest earns a national championship at the 2018 U.S. Fencing Nationals. Maia’s determination has certainly paid off. She has been very successful in all of the events she has participated in throughout the past several years. Most recently, Maia competed in the 2018 USA Fencing National Championships in St. Louis, where she earned a national championship in the women’s Division III foil event and earned an impressive “C” rating. 3 days of great savings and fabulous deals! Maia said her favorite part of fencing is the strategic aspect of it. “In fencing, it’s not always the biggest or strongest competitor who wins. The key to winning is [a] good strategy and quick thinking.” The techniques Maia learned from fencing have helped in all areas of her life, especially with her schoolwork. Maia fences four evenings a week. She also works with a private athletic trainer. During the school year, she is a member of Ocoee High School’s weight team. The year-round fencing season began Aug. 1 and will end July 31, 2019. Maia travels most weekends to tournaments around the country. Even with such a grueling schedule, Maia still finds time to give back to others. She often volunteers at The Salvation Army — Women’s and Children’s Shelter. An accomplished photographer, Maia also has auctioned off some of her work and donated the proceeds to the Arnold Palmer Cancer Research Center in honor of basketball player Lauren Hill, who passed away in 2015, at age 19, from pediatric brain cancer. For the past six years, Maia has been coached by Winter Garden Fencing Academy owner and USFA-certified armorer Jenny Seachrist. Jenny described Maia as “very mature and caring. She is incredibly thoughtful and always looking out for others. She is also very humble. When Maia achieves a goal, she is proud and excited by it but never boastful.“ Maia is currently in the beginning stages of working toward a coveted Congressional Gold Medal. She also dreams of one day competing in the Olympics. “Maia is very goal-oriented and not easily intimidated,” said coach Jenny, who can easily see Maia’s dream becoming a reality. “If she keeps working as hard as she does, she will no doubt make it to the Olympics, and I hope to be there in the front row cheering her on!” ª x September 6 — 19, 2018 x 7 Coming September 2018 Dr. Angela Chesanek 2018 14387 Bridgewater Crossings, Suite 100, Windermere, 34786 Legal Areas of Practice By our Team of Attorneys Administrative Advance Directives Bankruptcy Business Buy / Sell Contracts Commercial Contracts Corporation Criminal Employment Estate Planning Family Law Guardianship Litigation Last Wills Medicaid Powers Of Attorney Pre-Nuptials Probate Real Estate Special Needs Title & Closings Trusts Trademark Estate Planning Wills, Trusts, Probate, Living Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives, Pre-Need Guardians, Trust Administration, Pet (Animal) Trusts Probate With or without a Last Will, in order to obtain assets, pay debts and taxes and distribute remaining assets to the heirs or beneficiaries, the deceased’s estate requires the assistance of an attorney to manage the court supervised administration.
