NEW RESEARCH SHOWS CURRY
IS GOOD FOR YOU
Ok, so there is a touch of poetic
license here, but I do love a
curry, in fact other than my ex
father in law I don’t know
anyone that doesn’t! Going on
that premise and the fact that if
I can scientifically justify
something with some good
solid research I’m going with the title. As an aside, I’m happy to
include one of my own recipes I use to get all the goodness in, at
the end of the article.
So what am I going on about? Well, In the immortal words of
Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, 1826:
“Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es.” [Tell me
what you eat and I will tell you what you are]. Or putting it
simply… “You are what you eat”!
If you are suffering from inflammation; this could be arthritis, it
could be an inflammatory bowel disease, it could be a case of
non specific skin rashes, there are various foods that can help to
reduce this inflammation around the body and thus help it to
heal.
We all know about omega three fatty acids found in fish such as
sardines, herring and salmon, or in the case of the clinic the cold
filtered pure omega three we sell to our clients, it’s one of
biggest product sellers! But did you know about the “good
stuff” in certain nuts and indeed dark chocolate! (Another
fabulous justification as long as you stick to the dark stuff, the
sugar in normal chocolate actually increases inflammation!).
Alongside these three things there are 7 spices in particular
which are amazing at reducing inflammation.
Black pepper or more precisely the active chemical “piperine” in
the pepper, has also been demonstrated to be a great anti
inflammatory, anti oxidant as well as having anti bacterial
effects, especially in the early acute stages of inflammation.
Cayenne pepper has been used as an anti-inflammatory for
thousands of years. The active ingredients “capsaicinoids” are a
powerful anti-inflammatory and have long been used to ease
digestive problems, however more recent research has
demonstrated its amazing ability to reduce the inflammations
associated with arthritis and headaches.
We buy Gold & Silver
Fully Qualified & Insured
Cinnamon is another spice that numerous studies have shown it
has anti inflammatory properties and can help to ease swelling.
Best of all it can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes.
Cloves, which have been used for years as an expectorant, treat
upset stomachs, nausea and inflammation of the throat and
mouth
Garlic has been proven to ease the inflammatory markers
associated with arthritis, fresh is best but your friends and family
may start to avoid you, is this is the case, try roasting it or adding
it to your meals.
Ginger in all its forms, powdered in teas, in cooking (Asian and
Indian food) has again been used for centuries to treat
inflammatory conditions such stomach upsets, headaches and
infection.
Turmeric, which contains “curcumin” and has been used for
centuries to reduce inflammation, let alone treat wounds,
infections, colds and even liver disease.
A ‘KIND OF BLUE’ PLAYS MJQ
"Kind of Blue" (KOB), a local modern jazz group, are really
looking forward to performing in the Bell, Woodham Ferrers,
next Monday September 3rd, 8.30pm - 11.00pm.
Among many tunes from the "Great American Songbook" and
other jazz "standards" we will include numbers from the '50s
and '60s "Modern Jazz Quartet"
(John Lewis, piano; Milton Jackson, vibraharp; Percy Heath, bass;
Connie Kay, drums).
They played a form of music called "chamber jazz".
John Lewis's philosophy in dealing with racism in America was
not to fight it, but to rise above it (these ideas were promulgated
by many other Afro-Americans-e.g. the authors and poets in the
"Black Renaissance" in Harlem).
Lewis was disgusted with the "slide" into drugs into which many
of his contemporary jazz musicians were descending.
In his eyes they were fulfilling the stereo typical views of the
black man, held by white supremacists.
The "Modern Jazz Quartet" (aka MJQ) took on the trappings of
a "classical" chamber group:
They mostly performed in concert halls, wore evening suits, and
even did jazz variations of the works of Bach. They were out to
prove that black American music could be just as sophisticated as
white European. (Jazz had come a long way from the bawdy
"speakeasies" of New Orleans). But despite this, they kept the
essence of jazz, in that the MJQ really knew how to "swing".
Hopefully, by playing compositions, such as "Django" and "Bag's
Groove", written by the members of the American group,
Woodham's "Kind of Blue" will also bring that quality to our
work. Entertainment, entry and sandwiches are free, so see you
there!
THE HOLLY CLACY FOUNDATION FUN DAY
The Holly Clacy Foundation had its inaugural Family Fun Day in
South Woodham Ferrers two weeks ago on the 4th August.
Despite it being a hot day, the event was very well attended at
the local Rugby Club in Ferrers Road.
One of the trustees for the foundation, David Clacy, said “I was
blown away by the volume of people that came. We opened at
11am and there was a steady stream of families making their
way throughout the day.”
Among the attractions, covering three rugby pitches, were stalls
selling crafts of all kinds, food, drinks, games and bouncy castles.
“One of my favourite things, was the petting zoo,” said David.
“They had a tarantula called Curly, and it was great watching
people challenge their fears by holding him.”
As well as the many attractions and stalls, the Foundation also
had a display area set up, where local activity groups came to
entertain the crowds with their presentations, and was
compered by local singer, Rita B. David went on to say “We had
everything from gymnastics and parkour, right through to
dancing and even a bagpipe ensemble. During the evening we
had a children’s singing competition in the club house, which
was judged by the patron of the foundation, David Barnes from
the TV programme The Voice. We followed that with live music
from talented young artists, including Aaron Norman and Unify.
In the end we raised over £1,000 even though the event was set
up purely as a thank-you to our community for their support of
my family and their generosity.”
The Foundation was created after the death of David’s daughter
Holly, aged just 15, late last November. A local business woman
called Sue Colvill, helped start the initiative by offering to
organise a fund raising event for the family. “Once Sue got
involved and prepared that, the Foundation grew from there”
said David. “We have many ideas that we’d love to push forward
and we’re always looking for advice from healthcare
professionals and volunteers to help us”
The Holly Clacy Foundation can be found on Facebook and is
raising money to help set up ideas to combat bullying via
multimedia, running workshops to encourage young people to
communicate their problems more effectively and even educate
people to warning signs of emotional issues. “One of the things
that came to me after Holly’s death was the use of the word
‘mental’ when referring to people’s state of mind,” said David.
“I would love the word ‘mental’ being replaced with something
like ‘emotional insecurity’. It has a better connotation and is
perhaps more appropriate given that a label of ‘mental’ in any
capacity is more clinical in its diagnosis. I just feel it’s not
appropriate particularly as Holly was always a lovely, bubbly and
happy girl.”
David said he would love to give his thanks to everyone who
came, those that helped and those that took part and he went
on to say, “There are just too many to mention, but Sue Colvill
and Tina Williams were a fantastic help in setting up the Fun Day
and booking everyone in. They continue to work with me to help
drive forward our ideas. Ultimately though, none of the day
would have been a success without the support of our
community who put feet on the grass on the day. I remain
indebted to everyone.”
If you wish to contact David about some of his ideas, you can
SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

REASONS TO CELEBRATE:
the Society’s 40th
Anniversary and a reduction
in membership fees!
At its September meeting the South Woodham Ferrers Local
History Society reaches a significant milestone when it celebrates
the 40th Anniversary of the formation of the society. As its
special guest speaker for this ruby anniversary meeting the
Society is very pleased to be welcoming Lord Petre of
Ingatestone Hall.
Lord Petre will be giving an illustrated talk about the history of
his family and in particular the period covered by the 7th, 8th
and 9th Lords Petre in the 18th century when the fortunes of this
ancient Essex family probably reached their peak. On the
occasion of his last visit to the Society Lord Petre talked about
his role as the Lord Lieutenant of Essex and we can safely assume
that he will not have lost any of the entertaining and engaging
manner, that he demonstrated then, when he covers this
sometimes colourful period in his family’s life...
As part of the Society’s celebrations, and after many years when
the membership subscription has remained at £12 per annum,
the healthy position in which the Society now finds itself – with
sixty members – means that it has been decided that the annual
subscription should be reduced to just £10 per annum. This will
give admission to all of the Society’s eight talks between
September and May and with an interesting programme of
subjects lined up for the coming year, including talks on
Braintree silk making, Railway branch lines to Maldon, Essex
125th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
I am writing on behalf of The Salvation Army
Corps at Jersey Gardens, Wickford, SS11 7AE
which is celebrating its 125th Birthday this year.
Already some exciting events have been held,
notably the actual Anniversary being held in the
marquee at The Quart Pot Public House, Runwell,
where The Salvation Army held its first meeting in the district in
1983. We continue with our regular public 10.30am Sunday
meetings, but our next big celebration will take place at our
Harvest Thanksgiving weekend to be held on the 29th/30th
September in Wickford SA Hall. On Saturday the 29th, a Flower
Festival, from 10am to 5pm, will be open for all to attend, with
an exhibition on historic Wickford Salvation Army photographs
being held in the adjoining hall. Tea/Coffee available. Some local
companies are contributing to floral displays as well as Army
activities being incorporated in displays by members.
On Sunday the 30th, there will be a Harvest meeting at 10.30am
to be led by former officer leaders, Majors Ellwyn and Carole
Harries. We are happy to welcome anyone at any time, on any
occasion, but visitors might like to make a note of this special
‘birthday’ event, and come along; we shall be very pleased to see
them.
MISTER GEES FOUNDATION UPDATE
Following my recent successful appeal for help in the Focus last
month I should like say a little more about what the aims of
Mister Gees Foundation are and how the Warwick Parade shop
fits into the picture.
As somebody who knows just how much water it takes to make
one bottle of wine or a pint of beer it always sat a little uneasy
with me that whilst most of us imbibed freely there are millions
of people who lack access to clean there are millions of people
who lack access to clean drinking water and sanitation. The
recent drought in Cape Town has highlighted that it is not only
remote villages in third world countries that are facing this
problem.
The foundation aims to encourage the study of sustainable
water management in UK universities and colleges in order to
address future shortages caused by climate change.
Fifty percent of the profit raised in the Foundation Shop helps
fund this cause with the other fifty percent being donated to
good causes in South Woodham Ferrers via The Village Group.
Thanks to your support, over fifteen thousand pounds has been
given to the village since last November.
Full details of all local beneficiaries can be found on our
website at www.mistergees.org
OVER TO YOU.....
It’s so hot in here! A poem by Sophie
Hi, Last night my daughter (Sophie 9
years) came up with every excuse
under the sun not to go to bed, which
meant I couldn’t go to bed either her
final excuse was she was too hot (like
everyone else wasn’t) trying hard to
keep calm I said to her why don’t
you write a poem about it and I’ll
send it to the Focus! This is what I
woke up to this morning so I have
now kept my end of the bargain
and sent it to you.
Zoe
My bedroom is hot, hotter than yours,
don’t sweat because I’m wet.
Your duvet is thin, mine is thick,
my window is open just like yours.
Oh and I have closed my door, poor me.
Should be in Spain with Popsie
Chilling in his villa with air conditioning on full blast.
And dipping in the pool after every hour but just to let you know
it is blazing in here.
P.S. What a special family we are.
Thank you for stunning garden
I would just like to say thank you and well done to the lady who
has been tending the very large flower bed by the bus stop in
Broughton Road, near Starboard View. It really looks stunning. I
don’t know if it’s your own garden or a common area but I’m
sure you’ve made a lot of people smile. Thanks.
Shaw Farm
It had been a long time since I visited Shaw Farm, so when my
husband and I did last week we weren't sure what to expect.
What we had, was a very friendly welcome from George one of
the waitresses, followed by the same from Claire the Manageress
for the past 5 months.
Although it was just about 3 pm we were told that there is
always a chef on duty, so Restaurant and Bar meals are always
cooked fresh.
My husband ordered 8 oz medium rump steak plus all the
trimmings and I had Sea Bass fillets. As a side we had garlic
mushrooms. Everything was cooked perfect and just to our liking.
My fish was yummy, so was his steak, best one for ages. So well
done to everyone at Shaw Farm, we enjoyed our late lunch very
much, I finished mine off with Creme brûlée, perfect!!!
There is a very friendly feel about the staff, all enjoying their
work. So I do hope that "Shaw Farm"once more become the
venue we loved to visit, Good Luck Claire in your Shaw Farm
venture.
Spirited Gardener
This is an image of a strip of garden on Broughton Road, which
seems to have been created by a lady gardener. It’s worthy of
inclusion in the Focus (in my opinion) because the bit of garden
can’t be seen from the inside of the property, it is only seem by
those of us that drive past. I was thinking that a caption like
“Piece of garden created by a public spirited lady gardener for
people to see as they drive around the corner on Broughton
Road”.
All too often we see people not taking pride in the outward
facing bits of their garden and this is a nice example of someone
who has created something that the rest of us can enjoy!
put the date in your diaries! Thanks
to the hard work of the Committee
raised £196 for a very worthy charity. The husband of one of our
ladies very kindly made this up to £200 – a fantastic result. It was
a fun afternoon and we are anticipating a reprise next year.
The Afternoon Tea in aid of Breast Cancer Care was a great
success. We were very pleased to welcome ladies from East
Hanningfield WI and local visitors, as well as a good turn out
from our own ladies. The response to the request for homemade
cakes was overwhelming and we had a wonderful selection from
bread pudding to fairy cakes and everything in between. Thank
you to everyone who made/bought cakes – they were delicious
and there were not many left at the end of the afternoon!
There was a raffle, a quiz and a prize for the best decorated bra,
won by Linda. The ladies from our Craft Club made lots of
homemade cards for the event and these were flying off the
Traditionally the August WI meeting is replaced by an outing and
this year was no exception. It was an early start to visit
Aldeburgh in Suffolk. Fortunately the A12 didn’t hold us up too
much and we were there in plenty of time to start the day with
coffee. The weather was kind (but not too hot) and one of our
ladies braved the waves and swam in the sea. She said it was
like a warm bath but the rest of us just took her word for that!
Well done Viv. After a walk along the High Street, we enjoyed
lunch in a very pleasant restaurant near the sea front. It was fish
and chips (all served at the same time and piping hot) and a
wonderful selection of desserts. The sticky toffee pudding with
clotted cream was particularly delicious! After a walk along the
sea wall, the coach brought us safely home, again without too
much traffic.
A big thank you to Shirley who organised a splendid day out, as
she always does. During lunch she was given some suggestions
for next year’s outing so sorry Shirley, you’ve still got the job!!
The Light
Our future, whether in this town or on a global scale, will be defined by the children
– of this town, of this world. We would hope that there will be children that we have
raised or that we know that will make a difference. A difference to the environment,
a difference to the health of people, to make a contribution to the wellbeing of the
towns community or on a larger scale.
When we look at our children, why shouldn’t our expectations be great for them. We live in a place and in a country that,
compared to many other places, offers opportunities through education, employment and accommodation that provide some
of the foundations.
The questions for the community, the families, friends, and organizations that combine to support children is how to do it and
what do we want for them?
Children are shaped by their environment – home, school, where they play/hang out; they are moved forward by the relationships
within these environments. From these relationships there is a Love that seeks to encourage, keep safe, listen, instruct and be
consistent and provide a firm foundation; whether, family or friendships, we are social and grow through our socializing.
It can be a difficult and challenging journey, but we have within this community other people that have chosen to raise children
that can share concerns and celebrate the achievements. So, what do we want for them – good health, happiness, and to achieve.
We should aim high. We may think that he or she hasn’t got the ability or there are financial restrictions upon ourselves: but
there may be a desire within that young person to do something, create something, change something that, with support and
encouragement, will happen because they want it to. There is a drive to grow as an individual within us from birth, and that
growth will look different for each of us and is not always measured through material wealth, but also individual achievement.
Jesus is an important companion in the journey described. He is a strong foundation, He is the love when received into our lives
through how we then look at this world, and a guiding word for all supporting the children when times are challenging.
ABORTION PILLS AT HOME. Women in England will be able to take
may struggle to arrange childcare or days off work. Some women begin
to miscarry and bleed heavily while on their journey home after taking
the second pill."
She explains that: "Under the 1967 Abortion Act, pregnancies can be
legally terminated only in a place approved by the Health Secretary - but
by the end of the year 'home' (where suitable) is likely to be designated
as such a place."
So, if you get a knock at the door and you open it to find the Health
Secretary standing on your doorstep, let him in and show him round - he
only wants to inspect your home to ensure it meets NHS health and
safety standards in case it should ever be needed as a suitable site for
primary healthcare needs. Who knows, if he's really impressed by the
facilities you may be able to rent out the spare bedroom for use as a leg
ulcer clinic or a base for the incontinence service.
"What do colour blind people do when they are told to eat their
greens?" - Flo and Joan
This is not the first example of a move from hospital to home. When the
first treatments for erectile dysfunction were made available 'on the
NHS' patients had to be dealt with at the local hospital. This was long
before Viagra - and the drug had to be injected into rather a sensitive
part of the body. Patients were not thought to be capable of this - so
gentlemen with this problem were told to turn up at the hospital clinic
wearing a "baggy overcoat." Presumably they were also expected to
have a getaway car revving up outside (together with a police escort in
case they encountered a traffic jam on the way home.) Judging by the
law of averages, there must have been some of those treated in this way
who arrived home to find a note from their 'other halves' saying: "Just
popped out to Bingo - your dinner's in the oven."
"I think love is like central heating. You turn it on before guests arrive
and pretend it's like this all the time" - Laura Lexx
SURGE IN HEART DISEASE & STROKES PREDICTED. BBC reporter Alex
Therrien writes: "Heart attacks and strokes in England are set to surge in
the next 20 years as diabetes cases linked to lifestyle increase, a charity
has warned. The number of diabetics is projected to rise by one million
by 2035, largely driven by more cases of type 2 diabetes and increasing
rates of obesity. This could lead to a 29% rise in heart attacks and strokes
linked to diabetes, the British Heart Foundation said."
The problem is that the people most at risk have yet to get the message
and so the likelihood is that they will sleepwalk into catastrophe. There
are currently attempts to pick up patients before they have developed
'full blown' diabetes in the hope that they (and the NHS) will be spared
the consequences. Even this, though, is, to an extent, acting too late.
One way forward might be to put the advice where it's most needed - for
example, the supermarkets where people buy most of their food. If you
watch 'at risk' people piling junk food into their trolleys it's clear that
they haven't yet realised that, if you buy it, you're going to eat it - and,
if you eat it, you're going to pile on the pounds. Having a dietician
offering advice at this stage might just get the message across.
On the other hand, no commercial enterprise is going to antagonise its
best customers so it's hard to see this idea taking off. I can't say I look
forward to being led shamefacedly into the 'ASDA Biscuit Addiction
Centre' to be told in no uncertain terms: "physician heal thyself!" So
perhaps it's as well to leave things as they are.
"Trump said he'd build a wall but he hasn't even picked up a brick. He's
just another middle-aged man failing on a DIY project" - Justin
Moorhouse.
BETTER CARE FOR LONG TERM CONDITIONS. Back in 2012 the BBC
reported: "The health system in the UK cannot cope with the rising
number of under-65s with long-term medical conditions and needs
"radical change", says a study in The Lancet. A team of researchers
analysing 1.75 million people in Scotland found that nearly a quarter
had two or more chronic diseases. Their care was often co-ordinated
poorly and inefficient, the study said. The team wants a more personal
approach to patients with complex problems."
The article went on to say: "At present, healthcare services, medical
research and the education of medical students are dominated by a focus
SOUTH WOODHAM
FOCUS
FOCUS ON HEALTH
on individual diseases. Yet rising numbers of people are living with more
than two long-term disorders, called "multimorbidity", which could
include coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke and depression.
In general, people with multimorbidity are more likely to live in deprived
areas and have a poorer quality of life. Their care is fragmented because
they see a number of different specialists."
Our problem in SWF is that 'multimorbidity' is NOT confined to those
living in deprived areas such as Little Baddow. We see a large number of
cases here in SWF - but because the NHS has discovered we're all richer
than Croesus, we struggle to cope due to the fact that the funding here
is insufficient for the need.
In March of this year, Cambridge University's School of Clinical Medicine
put out a newsletter in which we were told that: "Over 14 million people
in England have multiple long-term health problems and over a third of
those have a mental health condition, according to a new analysis of
data from over 400,000 patients in England. More than half of GP
consultations are now with patients with multimorbidity, say researchers
in the new study, published today in the British Journal of General
Practice. Dr Duncan Edwards, Amelia Harshfield, Professor Simon Griffin
and James Brimicombe provide an up-to-date and comprehensive
description of multimorbidity — where patients have two or more
currently active, long term conditions. These conditions include those
heavily influenced by lifestyle factors such as coronary heart disease,
diabetes or cancer."
The article goes on to say: "As multimorbidity rates climb, demands on
health services are increasing and the number of GP consultations,
prescriptions, and stays in hospital are all rising steeply. Younger patients
may have complex physical and mental health problems, while clinicians
may find it difficult to manage the number of comorbidities that older
patients are experiencing. The information in this study may make it
possible to target areas of the health service where training or resources
are needed to handle this increasing burden."
Dr Duncan Edwards is quoted in the article: "It may be that we need to
think about a drastic restructuring of services: no longer will people be
seen in ‘single disease’ services but in new multimorbidity clinics designed
for the future."
This is what used to happen in the old days, of course, before the arrival
of the 'super-specialist' ... these days it's not unusual for patients to see
three or four different consultants (and communication between them
all too often isn't what it should be.)
"Why are they calling it Brexit and not The Great British Break Off?" -
Alex Edelman
This week there's news of an initiative that could make a difference.
NHS England announced on the Today programme that GP will be
encouraged to look for signs of mental health in those with long term
organic (physical) health conditions as the two often coexist. For
example, most people can put up with aches and pains that last a day or
two, but severe pain that goes on month after month, year after year, is
likely to result in depression. Even the stoics amongst us will eventually
succumb. Furthermore, there will be additional funding for trained
clinicians whose job it is to deal with the patients we flag up as having
mental health problems. My concern is that, as usual, there will be far too
many patients and far too few suitably trained clinicians - but at least
it's a step in the right direction.
"I've got a new job collecting all the jumpers left in the park at the
weekends, but it's not easy. They keep moving the goalposts" - Darren
Walsh
NOT WHAT DRINKERS WANT TO HEAR: The Lancet has conducted a
massive study concluding that "Alcohol use is a leading risk factor for
death and disability." It goes on to say: "Alcohol use is a leading risk
factor for global disease burden and causes substantial health loss. We
found that the risk of all-cause mortality, and of cancers specifically, rises
with increasing levels of consumption, and the level of consumption that
minimises health loss is ZERO" ... in other words, there is NO safe limit.
Even a glass of wine a day increases a woman's chance of developing
breast cancer ... and, though there those in whom a glass somewhat
improves their cardiovascular health, this is far outweighed by the
increase in other risks you run. It's a huge problem in the young too -
motor vehicle crashes (often alcohol related) are the leading cause of
death in people aged 15 to 20 - and other accidents (such as drowning)
are also frequently linked to alcohol ingestion. Liver specialists are seeing
more cases of cirrhosis in the young (resulting in death in some and the
need for a transplant in others.) The list goes on ....
It's not what we want to hear, is it? Sadly, though, the evidence keeps
piling up. The killjoys are winning the argument!
Press Statement GCSE results Summer 2018
William de Ferrers School celebrate superb student successes
Students and staff of William de Ferrers School are celebrating the superb successes of our students who
continue to achieve excellent results. A sense of joy was clearly evident as so many young people met or
exceeded their expectations enabling them to successfully continue on to the next stage in their education.
The headteacher Mr Applewhite said “we are particularly delighted that 66% of our students achieved a
grade 4 or higher in the new more demanding science courses. Far more students took triple science this
year and we are extremely pleased with their successes: 84% of students achieved 9-4 in biology, 83% in
chemistry and an impressive 86% in physics. Both maths and English departments continue to perform
highly with over 70% of results graded 4 or higher with English achieving 64% at 5 or above.
We are also very pleased with our performance of our arts subjects, which are highly valuable to young
people but under continued external national pressures under the current curriculum climate. Our drama
department achieved an impressive 27% 9-8 grades with 40% achieving grades between 9 - 7”.
There were some outstanding individual performances for example Jack Bunyan, Brijesh Patel, Will Rean
and Samuel Bridge who all achieved 4 or more subjects graded 9 and at least 5 other subjects graded 7 or
higher. In a truly remarkable performance and a special credit should go to Holly Letts who has 8 subjects
which were graded 9 and 2 others graded 7 or higher.
We are very proud of the results achieved by our students and look forward to welcoming many back into our
sixth form in September.
WOULD YOU ADAM AND EvE IT
"It’s a must-see: friendly, frenetic and so funny that the person
next to me was crying with laughter throughout. Before anyone
had even spoken, the show’s most distinctive element was
already obvious: the props. A whole array of objects were set at
the back of the stage, on a hat-stand and table, teasing the
audience as to what might happen next – what could a toy
plastic boat or a President’s portrait possibly be useful for? Every
couple of minutes, the two actors would go to the back of the
stage to take out their props for the next part of the sketch –
before long, confusion was morphed into laughter. This motif
gave a wonderful impression of spontaneity: it was slick enough
to seem funny but not so polished as to seem blandly rehearsed.
It gave plenty of scope for improvisation, made each joke as
surprising as the last, and created an atmosphere of warm,
genuine humour. The show’s welcoming feel was also helped by
the way the actors sparked off one another, and included the
audience in their daftness. At various points in the show,
someone would be required to fill a role – often one which two
male actors couldn’t quite do – and so someone would be
plucked from the audience, handed their prop and told what to
say. This kept the audience on their toes, and built upon the
fantastic rapport between the two actors: one younger and
energetic, full of witty asides, the other more mellowed and
measured, keeping everything moving. Though there were only
two of them, their enthusiasm easily filled the whole church.
Remarkably, in amongst all the mayhem, we were given a clear
and concise overview of the whole of Genesis and Exodus. The
show was true to the Biblical narrative at every twist and turn,
but also wallowed in the bizarre and brilliant details: look out for
the introduction to Joseph and all his brothers, and re-enactment
of Moses and the Burning Bush. Typically, an adaptation has to
compromise on either accuracy or humour; in this case, however,
the two were seamlessly and superbly combined"
SWF CC U15s vs BROOMFIELD CRICKET MATCH
BROOMFIELD 74 ALL OUT, SWF 75 - 5
The U15s returned to action for the final game of the season,
away to Broomfield. Both teams fielding a number of players
who had also played against each other the previous day for
their respective adult teams. That game had been a defeat for
SWF, so revenge was on the agenda.
The Broomfield ground is a picturesque and compact arena but
still managed to accommodate a crowd that looked to be several
thousand strong with plenty unable to get in. Admission was
again free and parking at a premium.
Tom lost the toss (again), and Broomfield chose to bat in the late
summer sunshine. Dan and Ben took the new ball and kept the
Broomfield openers under control with some tight and accurate
pace bowling, supported by excellent fielding.
Ryan and Josh then came into the attack, and between them
bowled a devasting spell of 6 overs in which they took 7 wickets
for 21 runs (Ryan 4 for 16, Josh 3 for 5 !!), reducing Broomfield
to 42 for 7 from 12 overs.
Marcello, Adam, Luke and Nathan then bowled the remaining 8
overs between them, with Adam, Luke and Nathan taking a
wicket each. Marcello unlucky not to pick up a wicket despite
some good balls.
Alongside the superb bowling the fielding and catching from
SWF was exceptional, with Dan and Ross taking 2 catches each,
Nathan and Josh 1 each, and Tom 2 catches and 1 stumping.
Every chance was taken and very few runs were given away in
the field, well done everyone.
Broomfield were bowled out in the 20th over for 74, the first
time the U15s had bowled another team out in less than the full
20 overs.
With summer turning swiftly to winter during the break the
temperature dropped several degrees, and the wind and the rain
began howling through as SWF commenced their innings. Dan
and Ben opened the innings and started steadily against some
rapid bowling, with the ball increasingly skidding through low in
the wet conditions. Then both openers fell in quick succession,
caught out trying to lift the run rate.
With the total at 28-2 Tom and Ross were together at the crease.
Tom looked to accelerate the run-rate before he fell, and Ross
looking to take advantage of a short ball fell to a catch in the
outfield. William batted sensibly until he too was out, and SWF
were 42-5 from 12 overs, and looking in danger of losing a game
they should be winning.
But Ryan and Nathan were now at the crease and the game was
back under control, with Nathan in particularly scoring freely
with Ryan in support. A flurry of 4s from Nathan tied the scores
after 15 overs, and then the winning run took SWF to a first
victory of the season.
A fantastic team showing today, with everyone contributing, and
a great way to sign off the Colts season. Special thanks to Tom
and Amy for all their hard work, and to all those parents who
have helped out. Now the winter break / football season and
then we look forward to seeing the Colts again next year
building on this season’s performances.
Secure Car Buyer Will Consider Buying Any Type of Vehicle..….
So Now Summer is Here It is A Good Time To Sell Your
Unwanted Car To Us
BATHROOMS & PLUMBING
Do you need some extra summer holiday spending money? A good
way of obtaining some extra funds would be to sell your unwanted
vehicle. Perhaps you have a car cluttering your driveway outside, or
you no longer drive, or perhaps your old car doesn't even start any
more! Now is a very good time to organise the sale of your unwanted
vehicle and turn that car into some much needed cash. There are
many reasons why you may turn to a car buying website like us at:
www.securecarbuyer.com . We are a local business and offer a safe,
reliable and honest service to all of our customers. Using us is
certainly a lot less hassle and a lot quicker as opposed to selling
your vehicle privately. We can come to your doorstep, inspect your
vehicle and make you a very good offer and even secure funds to
your bank account before we leave. We price all vehicles individually
and independently, and on their own merit- we do not rely upon
unrealistic system generated quotations, you will get the best value
for your vehicle.
It is well worth remembering we can buy any non-runner or nonroadworthy
vehicle as we can come directly to you. We can also
buy your vehicle if you haven’t owned it long, if you have lost the log
book or service history or are selling on behalf of someone. We will
still buy vehicles with less than 6 months MOT or if it is a CAT C or
D insurance write off. Other websites will not purchase your car if
any of the aforementioned issues apply, remember we will consider
any type of vehicle! With all the above in mind we will be pleased to
hear from you. Please visit our website or give us a call to make a
step in the right direction to sell your
unwanted vehicle today.
