6 | September 6, 2018 | The frankfort station news frankfortstation.com Frankfort park restoration project receives ComEd grant funding Submitted by ComEd To support the planning, acquisition, and improvement of local parks, natural areas, and recreation resources, ComEd and Openlands in August announced grants from the ComEd Green Region Program to 26 recipients throughout northern Illinois. The grantees, which range from local municipalities to park districts and forest preserves, will each receive up to $10,000 to support open space projects. The 26 Green Region grant recipients for 2018 include the Village of Frankfort’s Prairie Park restoration project, which will remove invasive species and encourage the return of native plants and pollinators. Public involvement will increase the visibility of the project, while educating visitors about the importance of native plants in the Frankfort area. This marks the sixth year that ComEd is partnering with Openlands, one of the oldest metropolitan conservation organizations in the nation, for the Green Region Program. Due to tremendous interest in pollinator conservation during the 2017 grant cycle, the 2018 ComEd Green Region Program again featured a special focus on projects that help pollinators like butterflies and bees. Illinois is home to thousands of native pollinator species, which provide critical support to our region’s flowering and food plant populations. Since the program’s inception, ComEd has awarded a total of more than $1,125,000 to communities in northern Illinois for environmental projects. “ComEd is committed to powering a cleaner and Frankfort Fire Protection District fire chief awarded designation of chief fire officer Submitted by Frankfort Fire Protection District Frankfort Fire Protection District Fire Chief Robert Wilson has successfully completed the process that awards the professional designation of chief fire officer, or CFO. The Commission on Professional Credentialing met on May 8 to confer the designation. Fire Chief Wilson became one of only 1,279 CFOs worldwide. The designation program is a voluntary program designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate their excellence in seven measured components including experience, education, professional development, Broker - Management Team “10” professional contributions, associate membership, community involvement and technical competence. The CFO designation program uses a comprehensive peer review model to evaluate candidates seeking credential. The Commission on Professional Credentialing awards the designation only after an individual successfully meets all of the organization’s stringent criteria. Achieving this designation signifies Fire Chief Wilson’s commitment to his career in the fire and emergency services. The professional designation is valid for three years. Maintaining the designation requires recipients to show continued growth in the areas of professional development, professional contributions, active association membership and community involvement as well adhere to a code of professional conduct. brighter future for our customers and communities. On Aug. 20, Kids around the World began removing the playground equipment. Kids Around the World is an organization that re-purposes old equipment which will be donated to an underdeveloped country. Many of the playgrounds the organization removes head to countries such as Ghana, Honduras and Haiti. The contractor retained by the Frankfort Park District began to mobilize and start the replacement of the new playground equipment on Friday, Aug. 24. The existing equipment was installed at the park in 2001. The new equipment selected is manufactured by Little Tykes and includes a play structure for the region in their efforts to advance green initiatives. The Green Region partnership is one of the many ways that this commitment is realized. ComEd provides the funding for the program, and Openlands administers the program. “At Openlands, we believe nature is vital to all people and that everyone should have access to parks, trails, and green space close to home,” said Openlands President and CEO Jerry Adelmann. “ComEd’s continued support through the Green Region Program has kids ages 5-12 with four slides, six swings, a rope tower and a stand and spin element. The existing sand volleyball court will be removed and replaced with turf.
