Side Trips
It was a soggy and disappointing start to
the season for Iowa State Cyclone football
fans — including our two teenagers
who are students at the university.
During a text exchange
between our
family on Friday
afternoon, our son
described the day
as “Christmas Eve”
which I didn’t understand.
He had to
elaborate for me that
there was so much
excitement in the air,
and anticipation for
the next day, that it was
like Christmas Eve.
Ah ha!

Kick-off wasn’t until 7 p.m. Saturday, so
there was lots of waiting that day as well.
And then you all know what happened
— lighting caused a weather delay, which
turned into relentless rain showers and the
game eventually being cancelled.
Our kids toughed it out, getting thoroughly
soaked while they waited.
Once the game was called, they headed to
their rooms to get into dry clothes and pack
the car in order to spend the remainder of
the weekend at Okoboji.
My husband and I couldn’t fall asleep
knowing they were on the road late at night.
We anticipated they would arrive close to
2 a.m. Wouldn’t you know it, the rainy
weather moved into the Iowa Great Lakes
right around that same time.
They pulled in during the heaviest of the
rain, when the wind was driving it into
horizontal sheets. By the time they grabbed
their bags and ran from the car to the door
they were soaked for the second time in less
than six hours.
No surprise that the next day Sam woke
up with sinus congestion and by Tuesday
Katie was battling a sore throat.
They still say it was worth it. The mom in
me isn’t so sure.
Shaun Johnson, lead singer of Tonic Sol-fa, is
bringing a new sound to the Iowa Great Lakes
with the Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience.

Classic rock is set to close down
the Clay County Fair.
Blood, Sweat & Tears will be
bringing their catalog of classic rock
hits to the grandstand Sunday, Sept.
16 at 7:30 p.m. in Spencer.
Steve Augeri, former frontman for
Journey will be opening the show.
Tickets range from $20 in the
bleachers to $30 for stage front standing.
“Historically for the fair classic rock
has been something that has been
very important for us and Blood,
Sweat & Tears definitely fits that,” said
Jeremy Parsons, CEO and manager of
the Clay County Fair. “They have multiple
hits and with Steve Augeri opening
- you couple those things together
and you have a lot going on.”
Their second album, the self-titled
“Blood, Sweat & Tears,” won the 1969
Grammy for Album of the Year.
Among their several hits are “Spinning
Wheel,” “You’ve Made Me So
Very Happy,” “And When I Die,” and
“I Love You More than You’ll Ever
Know.”
And while there will be plenty of
fireworks on stage, the audience will
want to stick around after the concert
for some more.
Each concert on the grandstand is
followed with a fireworks show by
J&M Displays.
Altogether it’s a great way to wrap
up another run for the Clay County
Fair. F

vendors, art
activities for kids
ARTISTIC SIDE
The Clay County Fair offers activities
for everyone to enjoy.
If visitors would like to explore
their creative side, then the Art Barn is
the place to be.
Open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. each day
of the fair, Sept. 8-16, the Art Barn will
be home to 11 art vendors, including
several local artists and authors, some
of which will be working on new
pieces during the fair.
“We’ve got a full house this year
for sure,” said Melissa Cadmus, curator
of Arts on Grand. “Perry Polson
will be turning wood again this year.
Lissa Potter will be doing hand built
pottery. And we are excited
to be introducing
‘Clayton Goes to the
Fair’ by Arla Kintigh
and Mandie Muehlhausen.”
T he children’s
book was conceived
and written at the fair
last year. Both Kintigh
and Muehlhausen will
be on hand at the fair
this week with their
individual and shared
work, as well as copies
of the book, prints,
and cards made from the artwork.
Other local authors Robin Allen
and Roger Stoner also have new books
out.
“Having three new publications
from local authors this year is exciting,”
Cadmus said.
Outside the barn itself will be several
activities throughout the week.
There will be live music on the Art
Barn stage every day.
Artist Kip Davis will be doing a live
mural painting the first Saturday of
the fair, weather permitting,
“That’s a great opportunity for
people to see his process and watch.
He’s done two murals before at the
fair,” Cadmus said.
There will also be watercolor painting
for kids, as well as mask making
where children can bedazzle masks to
wear around the fair.
“There will be a certain craft out at
any time for kids to do, it just depends
on how many people we have on
hand to help,” Cadmus said. “We’ll
have pumpkin painting for kids for
sure and many other opportunities.”

at home, or create your own work of
art.

Sesame Street Live!

It’s a good thing too because
he’s coming to the Clay County
Fair and bringing along some of his
friends.
Sesame Street Live! C is for Celebration
is set for two grandstand performances
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and
7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for reserved grandstand
seating or bleachers, or $20 for
stage front seating.
According to the Sesame Street Live!
website guests will get the chance to
“sing and dance along with Elmo”
and “shake it up with Cookie Monster.”
For Jeremy Parsons, CEO and manager
of the Clay County Fair, it’s all
about providing entertainment for all
ages.
“The bottom line, especially with
Sesame Street Live! is that every year
the goal at the fair is to provide something
for everyone,” Parsons said. “We
realized at the grandstand especially
we were lacking some type of entertainment
for families, so that’s really
where this came from.”
Parsons noted that this is something
brand new for the fair.
While in the past they’ve hosted
teen-type acts such as Radio Disney
stars or Nickelodeon stars, this is the
first time they’ve really targeted a
younger demographic for grandstand
entertainment.
As far as the show itself, the classic
characters of Sesame Street aren’t just
enjoyable for the kids.
“I think it’s just very iconic and
recognizable. It’s iconic for kids and
also you have a lot of parents who’ve
grown up watching Sesame Street as
well,” Parsons said. “So it works great
for a family event at the fair.” F

are the plethora of scarecrows.
There are individuals and groups
who work together to create fun and

Philips says that the event continues
to grow every year and that there is
something for everyone to enjoy.
“There is something for everyone!!!
Families and children will enjoy carnival
games, face painting, inflatables
and kiddie train, as well as a free
petting zoo. Adults will enjoy browsing
the more than 50 vendors set up
throughout the park. Everyone will
enjoy seeing the creative scarecrows
and can even vote for their favorite in
the People’s Choice award,” Philips
said. “All scarecrows will be auctioned
at 2 p.m., so if you see one you love,
you can take it home.”
This year will mark the 18th year
of the festival. It got its start as a fundraiser
for the GFWC Friendship &
Volunteers help with face painting during
the Great Akron Scarecrow Festival.

“The event started as a community
service project by the 40 women in
the Akron GFWC Friendship & Service
Club. They were looking for an
event that would be a family-friendly
way to bring the community together
and to raise funds to support various
projects. They were inspired by a fall
festival several members had seen in
Minnesota and decided to give it a
try in Akron. It was a success the first
year and has continued to grow each
year after that,” Philips said.
“Over the years the number of
activities for kids has grown as well
as the number of shopping vendors,
however the scarecrow decorating
contest and auction are still the heart
of the festival. The club continues to
host the event each year because it
has grown into a wonderful tradition
that showcases the small town spirit
of Akron, and it allows us to support
a number of programs in the community.”
Over the years the fundraiser has
grown and in the past several years
the group has raised about $10,000 at
each festival. That money is donated
back to projects and groups in the
community and school. F

That big band sound is back at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center.
The Dick Bauman Big Band
is a regular treat for visitors throughout
the summer months, but a special
concert is in store for those that love
that big band sound.
The Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience
will be onstage at 7:30 p.m. at
the PLAC on Thursday, Sept. 13.
“The Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience
experience fuses the pulse
of big band with the edge of contemporary
pop: bringing a new evolution
of the classics to you,” according to
Johnson’s website.
While this is a new sound for Shaun
Johnson, he’s not new to the musical
stage. He’s already made a name for
himself as the lead singer of the internationally
known vocal group, Tonic
Sol-fa.
Johnson is an Emmy Award-winning
singer/songwriter. His compositions
have been a part of two million
independently sold albums. He’s
conducted hundreds of high school
and college level vocal master classes
and has performed more than 2,500
shows.
Johnson is joined onstage by his big
band including Aaron Mae on alto
saxophone, soprano saxophone and
clarinet; Jeff Carver on trumpet and
flugelhorn; Theo Brown on piano;
Jim Bierma on bass; Ronny Loe on
tenor saxophone; Dave Stamps on
trombone; Conrad Miska on tenor
saxophone and flute; and Dave Budimir
on trombone.

A taste of Taiwan
Formosa Singers of Taiwan to perform on Sept. 10
The Orange City Arts 2018-2019
season is taking on the world.
Actually, it would be more accurate
to say that they are bringing the
world to Orange City.
The season, dubbed The World
Tour, will include a total of six shows
with performers from five countries
and four continents.
It all starts on Monday, Sept. 10,
with the Formosa Singers of Taiwan
performing at Northwestern College.
According to their website, the
group was founded in 1994 by art
director and conductor Julian Ching-
Chun Su. He started the program after
receiving his master’s in choral conducting
at Westminster Choir College.
He returned to Taiwan and started the
Formosa Singers.
He set out “to promote choral music
of pristine quality and to refine the
art of choir in Taiwan.”
They have performed around the
world and in many countries including
the United States, Canada, Australia,
Japan and more.
Their selection of music is unique
and helps bring the culture of Taiwan
to the places where they perform.
“As the advocate of Taiwan choral
music, Formosa Sings presents Taiwanese
folksongs in a mixture of classical
and modern styles, emphasizing
in-depth interpretation and diversity
with the selection of music. Their love

Crossroads Pavilion, Sheldon’s
new event center, just turned a
year old and what better way to
celebrate that milestone than with a
concert?
“We are super excited. It’s a Neil
Diamond tribute band and everybody
loves Neil Diamond,” said
Crossroads Pavilion general
manager Brittany Behrendsen.
“It’s about a 90-minute
show and they will play a
lot of hit songs. Another
neat thing about it is the
mayor, Tricia Meendering,
is gathering volunteers
for a couple of the
songs that feature a backup
choir and community members
also get to take part in
this as well.”
Officially, the show is called
“I Am, He Said: A Celebration of the
Music of Neil Diamond” starring Matt
Vee and The Killer Vees on Friday,
Sept. 14. Matt Vee is the nephew of
1960s pop icon Bobby Vee.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show
will start at 7:30 for what will be the
first public concert held at Crossroads
Pavilion. General admission tickets
are $25 while VIP passes are $99.
Matt Vee and his cousins, Jeff and
Tommy, sons of Bobby, are based out
of Minnesota’s Twin Cities and have
become renowned throughout the
region for their one-of-a-kind performance
of Diamond’s classic materials
as The Killer Vees.
Diamond has sold more than 100
million records in his legendary career
and The Killer Vees take full advantage
of the deep catalog. Expect the group
to perform “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “Song
Sung Blue,” and of course, the iconic
and crowd-pleasing “Sweet Caroline.”
Diamond has also garnered 13 Grammy
nominations over his career.

can attend. Sheldon officials are
stoked about the possibilities. The
$5.3 million venue is proving to be as
versatile as locals hoped.
“The facility was created to do more
than weddings and we wanted it to be
a multipurpose facility and one of the
things we wanted to do was host a big
concert,” Behrendsen said. “The timing
kind of works out as a way for us
to celebrate our first anniversary.” F

King Turkey Day in
Worthington
Once again, it’s time to talk turkey.
The city of Worthington will be
hosting the 79th Annual King Turkey
Day Festival on Friday and Saturday,
Sept. 14-15.
The two-day event is jam-packed with
fun and there’s something for the whole
family.
Saturday will feature many events including
a parade and The Great Gobbler
Gallop features two turkeys and their
racing teams. The two birds will race
down 10th Street for everyone to see. The
two turkeys are named Paycheck and Ruby
