32 Thursday September 6 2018 Latest Christchurch news at The Star Travel Chinese tourists unlock South Island ABOUT 600 million potential Chinese visitors will now be able to book holiday experiences in the South Island through the country’s leading travel app, Fliggy. Last week, Christchurch Airport launched a South Island store on the Chinese app, which will promote regional tourism and economic development. Travellers will be able to plan and book their travel through Fliggy, before they leave home or while they are travelling. Westland Mayor Bruce Smith said the plan is a boost to businesses all over the region. “It’s outgrowing every other market. Tourism is worth $314 million of the GDP to Westland every year,” he said. The hope is that Fliggy will encourage travellers to visit in the slower winter months. Fliggy is part of the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s digital eco-system and now has destinations from all over the South Island listed, giving the 600 million potential users the opportunity to book a New Zealand getaway. The platform allows them to obtain information in Chinese about the South Island and also uses Alipay, China’s largest mobile and online payment platform, which will allow visitors to pay for services in the way they are most familiar with. Said chief aeronautical and commercial officer at Christchurch Airport Justin Watson: “The launch puts our South Island attractions up amongst many of the world’s top destinations, helping Chinese travellers find us, book where to stay and book the fun they want to have while they’re here.” Representatives flew in from China for the official launch last Friday in Franz Josef. The work is being done in association with the South Island’s 13 regional tourism organisations under what is known as the SOUTH programme. It is now working with more than 800 businesses, representing CELEBRATE: Christchurch’s Chinese Consul General Wang Zhijian, speaking at the launch of Fliggy’s South Island store in Franz Josef last week. The Star Latest Christchurch news at Thursday September 6 2018 33 Discover the cool Franz Josef Glacier Following the launch of the South Island store on China’s leading travel app, Fliggy, reporter Sophie Cornish flew to the West Coast courtesy of Christchurch Airport. She explored the Franz Josef Glacier, one of the most popular attractions fore landing on top of the glacier. Experienced guides led the way doing what they do on a daily basis, cutting through the ice with a pickaxe. One guide, Andrew Malcolm, said he spends most of his days cutting tracks and steps to allow tourists the opportunity to walk safely across the glacier. “No one really expects or understands what it’s like to be up here until you’re up here – shock is the most common thing. People are just so in awe of what’s going on . . . it’s pretty incredible,” he said. •Want to know more about visiting the Franz Josef Glacier? Visit WITH WATER dripping down the ice walls onto our heads, we held our breath, ignored our claustrophobic fears and walked one by one into a 30m crevasse in the Franz Josef Glacier. It was what we had been waiting the entire three-hour hike for – the main event. Our jaws dropped and our voices echoed as we climbed deep into the glacier. We walked until it was too narrow to move any further. These crevasses, formed as a result of ice moving downhill, and the spectacular blue caves are what tourists from all over the world flock to the South Island to see. Known internationally for it’s natural beauty, the glacier stretches more than 10km over the Southern Alps and brings hundreds of thousands of tourists to the West Coast. It is more unique than other glaciers, being one of the most accessible in the world. With crampons attached to our boots and walking sticks in hand, we spent three hours hiking across the 7000-year-old natural attraction last Thursday. This activity is one of several offered by Franz Josef Glacier Guides NZ to experience the glacier up close. It began with a short helicopter ride over the breath-taking scenes of the Southern Alps, be- EXPERIENCE: A 30m crevasse in the Franz Josef Glacier can be walked through, as part of a three-hour long hike with Franz Josef Glacier Guides NZ, which reporter Sophie Cornish explored.
