Hello there lovelies…
Parenting is truly a gift to be reckoned with! They say that to be a parent is akin
to wearing your heart on your sleeve, and how true that is!
How times have changed for parents, compared to the past generations,
wouldn’t you agree? I mean, take the babymooning thing of today and you’ll
get a picture of what I mean. Back then, going off on a holiday with a swollen
belly wasn’t even encouraged, much less given a name and made into a trend.
And a weekly photo shoos of one’s expanding belly? Unheard of! Still, it’s all
good. Most modern day parenting trends have a somewhat progressive and
exciting air about them and yes ,it’s actually a great time to be a parent or
parent-to-be!
Coincidentally, things have never been better for the baby products and services
industry too, for look how they’re thriving. Just walk into any big mall or baby
centre (or check out online shops) and you’ll see what we mean. In this issue,
we have the honour of revealing to you the winners of our BabyTalk readers’
choice Awards as well as the Diamond Award winners ( for brands that have
won five years or more in a row). Check them out inside!
At BabyTalk, we’re all about parenting and more and we’ve been churning out
informative articles on pregnancy, baby care and parenting since we emerged
into the scene seven years ago. As a magazine dedicated to pregnancy, baby
care and parenting, we strive to go after the latest news and updates for the
benefit of our beloved readers. we hope you’ll find this issue a welcome read

What makes for a
wholesome childhood
development
BabyTalk caught up with Ms Kim OOI, the
Principal of Gymboree Play & Music Malaysia for
a quick Q & A session, and here’s what we got.
BT: In your opinion, do well- structured activities have an
influence on the growth and development of little kids?
Ms OOI: Definitely! Babies and toddlers need to have
a wholesome development that will accompany them
throughout their lifetime, which includes self confidence, social
skills, physical and mental development, etc. Hence, well
structured activities will need to include the different aspects
of the development that comprise of free exploration as
well as repetitive activities. Another important aspect of the
development is the ‘fun’ element in the activities as kids learn
best through play.
Carefully designed directed activities enables the teachers to
impart values and skills set to the kids while allowing them to
enjoy and have fun at the same time.
However, age-appropriate activities that meet the development
milestones during their formative years will make a big
difference. For example, a 12-month old baby is learning to
walk, 16-month old toddler is learning to talk while a 24-month
old toddler begins to play imaginatively. Since 90% of the
brain is developed by age 3, and almost completely by age 5, it
therefore make sense to give them a head start.
BT: What are the roles of parents when
it comes to ensuring their little ones are
active in mind and body?
Ms OOI: Bonding time between child and
parents is very important and it cannot
be over emphasized. Research has shown
that young children learn best – and have
the most fun – when parents enter their
world of play and imagination. A child needs
encouragement, hence affirmation for however small a task
the child performs goes a long way in building confidence in
them. Parents will do well to expose their little ones to different
simulations using the senses of touch, sight, hearing, taste and
smell through play activities and social interaction with their
peers, and accompany them too.
BT: What makes Gymboree a sought after early

Can an overall feeling of constant tiredness and
lifelessness be an indicator of why I can't seem to get
pregnant even after a year of trying? I'm even thinking
of quitting my job for the long hours are really wearing
me down. ~
A straightforward answer is a no. However, tiredness and
“lifelessness” may be a contributing factor to infertility in
other ways.
A direct association is when it affects your sexual life. When
you are not having intercourse at the ‘right’ time of the month
(fertile period) due to tiredness, you are not helping yourself to
get pregnant. Typically, a couple is advised to have intercourse
2-3 times during the female partner’s fertile week.
Excessive tiredness / stress can also affect the regularity of
your ovulation. This makes the period cycle very irregular and
it makes it even more difficult to identify one’s fertile period.
For a young woman, it is very unlikely that these symptoms
are due to a serious pathology.
It is not uncommon for women, especially those undergoing
an IVF fertility treatment, to feel that complete rest at home
may help to improve their chances to get pregnant. However,
current evidence does not support this belief. Thus, resigning
from your job may not necessarily help you. However, you
may just need to re-look into your work schedule and try to
readjust your workload.
My advice to my patients is that it’s better to go to work
after a fertility treatment because it helps them to shift
their worry about the outcome of their treatment, for this
creates unnecessary stress - High stress hormone may reduce
pregnancy rate.
I'd like to offer my two year old fruit juice to drink
}
every day, but I've heard so much about apple juice
containing too much sugar and being bad for toddlers.
What is your take on this? Thank you. ~

DIETITIAN
Firstly, Malaysian children don’t seem to be taking enough
fruits and vegetables. While fruit is indeed healthy, parents
may make the mistake of thinking that fruit juice must be
healthy and so, it can replace their child’s fruit intake for the
day. On that same note, know that all fruit has natural sugar
called fructose. When it comes to buying fruit juice, parents
have to be alert with the food label/ nutrition panel from the
food packaging. Some commercial fruit juices might have
added sugar in the content itself. Even if it stated as 'no
added sugar' or 100% fresh fruit juice, parents should only
serve the juice to children according to the recommended
amount as mentioned by the guidelines below.
According to Malaysian Dietary Guidelines for Children
and Adolescents 2013, for children below 7 years old, give
2 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit daily. One
serving of fruit is equivalent to a medium size apple, half a
mango or a cup of cut fruit. Alternatively, you can prepare
fresh fruit juice without added
sugar and preservative, making
up four ounces of juice from
fresh fruit.
According to American Academy
of Pediatrics, the recommendation
for young children 1-3 years
old is 4-6 ounce of 100% fresh
fruit juice in a day; and for older
children aged 7-18 years old, juice
should not be more than 1 cup (8
ounce) a day (or 2-2 1/2 cups of
cut fruit a day.)
However, although fruit juice can be taken as part the healthy
diet, the dietary fiber content is lower than whole fruit and
when taken excess can contribute to extra calories being
consumed. Hence, taking 100% fruit juice once per day in
addition to whole fruit is advisable.

In addition to protecting your baby from birth defects, folic
acid could also protect your own health.
Studies show it might lower the risks of heart disease,
stroke, and some types of cancers. Folic acid might even
help ward off Alzheimer’s disease.
The science involved in the treatment of infertility has rapidly advanced in the past
few years . This advancement is clearly seen in the field of In-Vitro Fertilisation or IVF.
Current technology enables us to look into the genetics of human reproduction.
Genetic testing also provides answers to infertility; and in some cases, solutions.

Screening (PGS)
IVF involves creating embryos in an IVF laboratory and placing
them into the womb.
Traditionally an embryo is graded based on its morphology
(external appearance under a microscope). The embryo/
embryos with the best gradings is/are transferred back into
the womb.
A morphologically-normal embryo with the best grading does
not necessarily indicate that the embryo is genetically normal
(euploid embryo).
A genetically-normal embryo will lead to a successful pregnancy,
assuming there are no other factors contributing to a failed
embryo implantation or pregnancy. Preimplantation genetic
diagnosis (PGS) looks at the genetic normality of the embryo
prior to an embryo transfer procedure. Embryos are typically
grown up to 3 to 6 days before the biopsy is performed.
Biopsy of the embryos are done when the embryo is either
3 days old or when they have reached Day 5 or 6, known
as a blastocyst.
Biopsy of the blastocyst is usually preferred because more cells
are obtained from the embryo thus increasing the chances of
the PGS to be performed successfully.
To be able to perform the biopsy, a small opening is made
on the outer layer of the embryo, using either mechanical,
chemical or laser technology. The biopsied cells (usually in the
range of 5-10 cells if done on a blastocyst or 1-2 cells if done
on Day 3 embryo) are then amplified to make a large number
of copies of the genes to be studied. To be able to perform
PGS on the embryo/s, the couple need to go through an IVF
procedure to create an embryo in the fertility laboratory and
the embryo/s is/are typically frozen, pending the PGS results.
A PGS-normal embryo/s is/are then transferred into the
womb. This process is know as frozen embryo transfer
(FET). FET is done either in a natural cycle or in a hormone
replacement cycle.
Genetics of Male Infertility
About 15% of couples

factor related infertility.
Male infertility ranges from
very low sperm quantity
(severe oligospermia) to no
sperms cells (azoospermia), apart from sperm quality issues.
Genetics testing for a man is important especially if he suffers
from azoospermia and to a lesser extend, severe oligospermia.
This genetic testing is done from the blood sample of men.
Both women and men have 23 pairs of chromosomes, out
of which one pair will determines the sex of the fetus (sex
chromosomes). There are two sex chromosomes, X and Y.
A man carries the XY chromosome while a woman carries the
XX chromosome. Up to 10-15% of men with azoospermia
and about 5% of men with severe oligospermia have a gene
deletion on chromosome Y. This is known as microdeletion-Y.
There are generally 3 types of microdeletion-Y, namely AZF-a,
AZF-b and AZF-c.
In an individual with microdeletion-Y with AZF-a, there is
about 50% chance of retrieving sperm directly from testicle of
the man. However, in complete AZF-b and AZF-a deletions, it’s
nearly impossible to retrieve sperm surgically from testicles.
Some men with azoospermia may have a condition called
Klinefelter Syndrome. This happens in about 3% of men with
azoospermia. In Klinefelter syndrome, the man has an extra
X sex chromosome thus the chromosome are often detected
as 47-XXY. Men with this syndrome have a certain typical
physical attributes, however some men with this syndrome
may not exhibit the typical features.
Azoospermia can also be due to absence of vas deference (tube
that transport sperm out of testicles). This condition is called
Cystic Fibrosis which is due to mutation in the cystic fibrosis
gene (CFTR). This condition is uncommon in Asian population.
Genetic tests for recurrent
Couples with recurrent miscarriages or couples who
underwent an IVF with recurrent implantation failure may
need to test their own genetics (chromosome test).
In some cases, couples do carry an abnormality in their
chromosomal arrangement, known as balanced translocation.
A balanced translocation does not cause problem in the
affected individual. However, once the translocation has been
passed down to their offspring, it can become ‘unbalanced’.
An unbalanced translocation can lead to a pregnancy loss and
implantation failure in an IVF.
Genes that are linked to development of immunotolerence
to the fetus, inflammation and genes that alter maternal
metabolism and blood coagulation are also being studied.
In conclusion, couples who are dealing with infertility,
recurrent miscarriage and repeated IVF failures should
discuss with a fertility doctor about appropriateness of
genetic testing for them.

PTL: First of all, we have to establish that

development. At Odyssey, which is Reggio
Emilia inspired, the children explore the
world through an emergent and interactive
approach. The projects that the children
embark on are very much derived from
their interests and responses. The Odyssey’s
hands-on, minds-on and hearts-on
approach encourages children to be
involved and immersed in learning by
engaging, experiencing and manipulating
with their hands; naturally solving
problems, analyzing and taking
perspectives with their minds. When they
are involved in the process and find interest
and success or failure, they invest with
their hearts. Therefore, learning is not just
head-knowledge but a cohesion of
concepts, competence, communication
and citizenship.
BT: What is the role of preschool
teachers in setting the right foundation
for lifelong learning?
PTL: The Odyssey’s best-in-class educators
facilitate the children’s learning by providing
activities, experiences and materials that
are relevant, developmentally appropriate
and open-ended so that the children are
able to expand their minds. Educators
prepare the learning environment
purposefully enabling the children to
explore freely at their own pace, their own
time and at their ability. Educators are
involved in observing children under their
charge to provide for differentiation in
learning. Not one child is the same as
another; each child is unique. Educators
support the children by scaffolding their
learning, helping them to proceed to the
next level. Thus, increasing the opportunities
for success, which inevitably promotes
progressive development.
BT: What are some unique lessons or
activities at Odyssey, and how do they
develop a child's knowledge and
abilities?
PTL: Research has shown that when
children become involved in their learning,
they develop a vested interest and selfmotivation
that would see them through
to fruition. At Odyssey, educators facilitate
learning by setting up the environment
with interactive materials and meaningful
activities so that the children would be
independent learners, competent
communicators and cooperative social
citizens. The Odyssey’s curriculum develops
children to be curious, participative and
interested by involving them in the
planning process, the engaging activities
and the creative expressions. Our specialist
teachers, like the Art Specialist and the
Music Specialist, are trained in their
respective areas of expertise. They plan
lessons that would enhance the children
creative expressions. In art, the children
will be engaged in art experiences using
a myriad of art techniques and materials
like sculpting with clay and wire, painting
with acrylic paint and watercolors, etc, as
they express themselves through the
elements of art, like lines, colours, shapes,
textures and forms. Our Little Chef lessons
help to make mathematical concepts, like
measurement, and science skills, like the
change of state and the effects of heat,
more applicable to the children. As the
children measure and mix ingredients to
make cookies and then apply heat to the
dough they had created, they learn and
build on skills and concepts in everyday
situations. This makes the learning of
subjects like math and science come alive,
versus learning these subjects in isolation.
Learning in context is the key to learning
in children.
BT: What are the main differences in
preschool education today compared
to one, two decades ago? Do children
still learn the same way? Please explain
PTL: Children these days are exposed to
a multitude of technological distractions
and individualism. There’s an imbalance
of visual stimulation via mobile devices
that the development of other aspects,
like physical development, problemsolving
skills, social interactions and verbal
communication are sorely neglected. At
Odyssey however, children are involved in
a lot of hands-on experiences that engage
them to think, reason, interact,
communicate and negotiate. Through the
projects that they are involved in and the
other creative curriculum components,
like Art Odyssey and Music Odyssey, the
children have opportunities to develop
holistically. It is important for parents and
educators to work together to create the
best learning experiences and environment
for the children.

We can assure you, posing in front of a camera with a pretty
piece of fabric being fan-blown across one’s bare, pregnant
belly were never a thing in the past. Similarly, most photos of
babies too were nowhere near what we have today, with all
those cute outfits, adorable props, baby beanies, etc.
For expectant or new parents today though, these photo
sessions seem to be evolving into a new tradition - almost
a must. It’s not even about a photograph or two, for we’re
talking a whole photoshoot to fill an entire album in one go.
Having these prenatal and baby photoshoots seem to have
taken the world by storm and Malaysian families are not to
be outdone. Plus, with their respective social media platforms,
families can showcase the results of these photo shoot
sessions to glory!
Babymooning
Travelling here and there prior to giving birth,
especially during the second or third trimester was
unheard of in the past. You’d be expected to use
your spare time preparing for your birth and baby
and ponder on how to be the best mother, wife and
housekeeper. Even now, most people from the older
generation simply cannot comprehend the concept
of babymooning, which basically means going off on
a holiday before the baby is due. To modern parentsto-be,
babymooning is akin to one last chance to
freely enjoy each other’s company before baby
comes along and commands everybody’s attention!
Setting up a magazine
worthy nursery
Probably the only similarity the generations of the past had
with this new trend are those pretty, handmade baby quilts/
blankets that they received as gifts. Today however, it’s a
serious matter of looking for the perfect furniture, bedding,
wall deco, etc to go with the chosen overall theme. Setting
up the perfect nursery can take weeks or even months, and
have even been sources of arguments between couples,
especially when tastes clash.
A couple of decades ago, a nursery itself wasn’t exactly a
thing among Asian families, for traditionally, our babies
slept with us or at least, very close to us, and not in a room
somewhere else in the house… which coincidentally brings us
to our next trend.

The use of baby monitors
These nifty devices have taken the world of modern
parenting by storm. They allow parents to monitor their
baby either by sound, sight or both, as they get about
their daily duties in other areas of the house. It’s a
commendable trend however, for it alerts parents when
ever a baby is awake, crying, etc, even when they’re not in
the same room.
Before the creation of baby monitors, especially the video
type ones, parents had to keep making their way to where
baby was to check for wet/soiled diapers or hunger cues. So,
baby monitors are a huge help to parents, that’s for sure.
The art of using a baby carrier
While baby slings aren’t exactly a new thing, they never really
took off at such a large scale like they do today. These days,
carrying one’s baby in a baby carrier is an art to be perfected.
The chosen carrier itself has to be a stylish, or at the very
least, presentable, for most parents.
Needless to say, parents these days do not just walk into a
store and buy a carrier off the shelf just like that. There’ll be
testing, trying out different models, checking for defects,
determining if baby will be comfortable in it, etc. Once a
purchase is made, lots of practice goes into placing baby into
one and taking said baby out of it too.
Tracking baby’s well being
through the phone
Technology has brought about so many exciting new things
into the world of modern parenting, so much so that we
sometimes ask if some things may be a tad too much
information. For instance, apps that monitor baby’s bowel
movements, sleep patterns and even nutritional needs - soon
we’d have to ask what exactly will be left for parents and
doctors when it comes to taking care of a baby’s needs.
Teaching baby to
self-settle/soothe
Here’s a rather controversial one, the trend of teaching a baby
to self-settle or self soothe. Perhaps the problem some people
have with this practise is the fact that there will be a whole
lot of crying to contend with before the little one gets the
idea of how things should be. Modern parents who buy into
this new concept however, are found to be quite diligent in
their quest to train their little one to fall asleep on their own
and to not fuss when it comes to sleeping and napping.
Ask any grandma however and she’ll tell you a baby’s cries
and fusses are absolutely necessary indicators that it’s time to
sleep, which in turn means that it’s time for some pacifying
- i.e. time to pick the little one up and lull him/her to sleep.
Either way, parents just want what’s best for their babies, so if
self-settling works, good for them, we say!
Discussing baby issues with
strangers on social media
We can neither dis nor glorify the parenting trend of discussing
baby care issues or asking advice on parenting matters from
people you hardly know on Facebook. For many, it has helped
them shed some light on many things and most importantly,
solutions to some of their pressing issues were found. We find
that while there are many people out there who are willing
to help and are sincere in their gestures, one should still be a
tad careful when it comes to strangers - read: never reveal too
much information about yourself or your family.
Enrolling babies into classes
It’s a really modern thing to see babies who have not yet
even begin to walk being enrolled into a baby enrichment
class. Here, they will mostly parallel play ( play separately, side
by side with other babies) while their parents look on and
socialise with other parents. Absolutely nothing wrong there,
for sure, and even baby will get to meet other babies!

It was a show of ‘superpowers’ as families gathered at the

in UNICEF's inaugural 'Climate! Comic! Contest!' last year.

Developing good oral hygiene is also the first line of defense
against common dental problems such as the following:
• Plaque: This is easily missed as it is not clearly visible.
This whitish substance develops and clings to the teeth
when food is mixed with bacteria and saliva.
• Tooth decay. Decay occurs when small holes, or cavities,
form in the tooth. Plaque is the main culprit of tooth
decay, especially when sugar comes in contact with the
bacteria in your mouth.
• Gum disease: It’s actually an infection or inflammation
of the gums surrounding the teeth. Unhealthy gums
are exposed to plaque and can cause an inflammation
called gingivitis.
• Halitosis is the technical term for bad breath. It is
caused by the unhealthy buildup of plaque and the
inflammation or infection of the gums.
Teaching your child good oral hygiene techniques is important
for their oral health, and will help to alleviate all of the
conditions above. Good teeth-brushing techniques should
be taught from an early age, so that kids will have a better
chance of taking good care of their pearly whites. Parental
guidance and/or aid in dental care (brushing, flossing, etc.) for
children should continue constantly until they have mastered
proper oral hygiene techniques.
Good oral hygiene - What is it?
Children’s oral hygiene should not be taken from granted just
because they know some basic tooth-brushing skills - They
should be checked upon and oral care lessons should be
reinforced, with parental guidance continuing until they are
truly capable of managing their own daily oral care. It should
include cleaning the mouth at least twice a day. Children’s
daily routine should include:
1. Brushing their teeth. They should brush their teeth for
two full minutes with an age-appropriate toothpaste.
Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months.
2. Flossing. The practice of flossing is helpful in keeping
your child’s mouth free from bacteria. Ask your dentist
about the best times for flossing for a child.
3. Using mouthwash. In addition to getting rid of small
pieces of debris, rinsing is a great way to keep your
child’s gums healthy. Choose a mouthwash that is safe
and suitable for children.
Ways to encourage

1. Be a good role model. Children see,
children do, so brush your teeth, floss
and rinse in front of your children so
they can learn by example.
2. Interesting toothbrushes. Electric
toothbrushes are extremely
fun for your child, where else
musical toothbrushes play for the
recommended two minute duration

brushing for the optimal time.
3. Fancy dental floss holders. Your child
may be more encouraged to break off a
piece of floss if they are pulling it out of
a fancy container. Many dentists also
recommend one-time flossers, which
come in fun shapes and are easier to
use and more child-friendly.

A visit to the dentist every six months should be a must. A
dentist will be able to provide the professional care and advice
that will help in keeping a child’s teeth and gums healthy.
Dealing with anxiousness about
dentist visits
It’s natural for kids to be a bit apprehensive about visits to the
dentist. Encourage your child to discuss any fears he or she
might have about visiting the dentist. You can try scheduling
your own appointment before theirs so that your child
can watch and have a chance to see what happens during
a dental visit and observe your behavior throughout the
appointment. This will be your chance to prove to them that
there really is nothing to be worried about.

As parents, it’s crucial to not divert from any initial financial planning
or worse, abandon them completely! There are a few things that can go
wrong if we're not careful about money, so let's take a look, shall we?
Giving in to trends
Many kids have stuff they don't need. If you're buying
something for your child just because many others seem to
own it but it is of no real importance, then you yourself are
teaching junior that it's alright to buy stuff just to 'fit in'. Turn
this around as quickly as you can and encourage instead the
purchasing of stuff that's needed. Impart into your young one
the importance of valuing money and spending on things
that you need first and on stuff you like only if you really can
afford it. Only a parent can effectively teach his or her child
the difference between needs and wants, and that every
purchase should matter.
Plan before spending
Lack of financial planning may give rise to
financial crisis and make life difficult for the
whole family. So, remember, while there is no
harm in fulfilling all the necessities of your
kids, it should not be done however only to
match the contemporary standard of living.

Neglecting your nest egg
Preparing for your child’s college education is good, but not
the cost of your future. There are several ways to take care of
your kid's education. Young adults should be encouraged to
seek part-time jobs, scholarships, and student loans that can
assist them through higher education. Remember, it's just
as important for you to save for your life after retirement too
and prevent dependency on your offspring.
The constant splurging
If you are convinced that buying only branded items means
giving your kids the best, then they will also start believing
the same and soon get addicted to brands, unwittingly
deceiving themselves into believing that only branded stuff
can get the job done. This addiction will grow more as the
kids grow older and pretty soon they'll be 'needing' clothing,
bags, shoes, electronic devices and gadgets from upscale
names because that's the way they were brought up.
These will inevitably add up to unnecessary spending with
potentially heavy burden to a family's finances which may
even give rise to family crisis, parents blaming one another,
etc. To avoid going down this road, start teaching your child
the value of money and the art of making smart purchases
from young. so that they cultivate smart money habits which
will serve them well in the future and also help keep the
family's finances in check!

feel like getting life insurance or disability
insurance. However, you never know what
may happen the next moment; probably a
mishap at the workplace may shatter the
life of your family members and leave you

Apart from the money mistakes that parents make with their
kids, they often fail to plan the finances for other things. On
one hand, some parents keep telling their kids to use money
wisely, but on the other hand, buy expensive gadgets, spend
on luxurious items and lavish vacations, etc.
One thing parents need to know is that children learn more
by watching their parents' actions rather than verbal teaching.
Hence, set good examples before them and make them learn
more and follow it throughout life. Show them that you do

There is a big difference in talking to your kids about the birds

young as five or six are capable enough to understand basic

Checking the label of your chosen baby food will give you

On the whole, children are ready and eager to learn. While each child develops at their own pace, all children progress
through an identifiable sequence of physical, cognitive, emotional and social growth. They are constantly gaining new
skills to improve their interaction with the world around them.
Physical
Children between 1 to 6 are an active, energetic lot!
Through hours of play, they are developing and refining
their gross and fine motor skills, like balance, coordination,
dexterity and agility. Walking, running, climbing and
jumping becomes more automatic and less of a conscious
act. Activities like writing, drawing and basic self-care
improves as they acquire strength in and more control over
the use of their hands and fingers.
Emotional
As children grow and are exposed to different scenarios, their
emotional lives become more complex. They begin to learn
more about feelings and emotions, understand how and why
they happen, recognise their own feelings and realise that
others have feelings too. It’s important that they learn how
to manage their feelings, for the ability to respond to this
complexity and the possible range of emotions will have an
impact on their choices, their behavior and their quality of
life.
Cognitive
Early childhood is a time of remarkable mental development.
As a child plays and uses their imagination, they are
enhancing their cognitive abilities associated with memory,
reasoning, problem-solving and thinking. Their vocabulary
grows rapidly and their use and understanding of language
continues to mature.
Social
Positive social interactions and healthy relationships with
parents, teachers, caregivers and peers from a young age are
critical for building a sense of security and self confidence
in children. This lays a strong foundation for social skills and
relationship building.
